What I Liked:

I don't read too many novellas because they're often way too short, but I've read several from the 1,001 Dark Nights collections, and I've enjoyed all of them. The idea behind 1,001 Dark Nights is fantastic and I'm sure all of the novellas that have been published so far have been excellent. Dragon Burn is no exception! I adored Sebastian and Gianna's story.

Sebastian, a powerful Dragon King, is in Venice to find information about a man who might be framing Ulrik (Sebastian's friend and fellow Dragon King) for terrible deeds. Ulrik hasn't been found in a long time, and the man in Venice is as mysterious as they come. Sebastian is fairly certain he has located the man, and he is going to get close to the man's personal assistant to find out. But seducing Gianna backfires when Sebastian realizes that he doesn't want to use her - he simply wants her, no matter his reasons for being in Venice. When his search puts her life in danger, Sebastian must choose what is more important to him - justice for Ulrik, or the fiery woman who is definitely his Ice Queen. But what if he can have both?

I'm kind of a sucker for paranormal/fantasy romance novels involving a non-human male and a human female. It's not quite the same for me when the roles are reversed, for some reason. I love the dynamic that the non-human male/human female trope has on a story. And it works so well, in Dragon Burn. Sebastian is a powerful immortal Dragon King, thrown off his game by a mortal human he set out to seduce. Gianna is a tough workaholic whose ex-husband described as boring. The two of them fit together so well.

Sebastian has to make some top ten book boyfriend lists. He is so dreamy! He's Scottish and he's a sweetheart with nice manners. Did I mention how much I love powerful non-human males in paranormal romance? Especially an alpha? Sebastian is a Dragon King, and he has been around for a while. He is clever and smart, charming and lethal. Did I also mention powerful and sexy? While I loved the length of this novella, I feel like there should be a full-length novel for Sebastian (and Gianna). I wouldn't mind seeing more of his story!

Gianna is perfect for Sebastian (just like he is perfect for her). She is a hard worker and a loyal woman. Not once was she ever afraid of Sebastian, even when she found out what he was. She trusted her instincts and followed her heart, but she also used her brain and didn't jump to conclusions or run before hearing explanations. Smart girl. I liked her a lot!

The two of them together are straight fire. Grant cooks up such great chemistry. Gianna may think of herself as a cold workaholic, but being with Sebastian proves that she is just as passionate as he is. I loved watching them ignite. But it's not just lust and sexy times - they fall for each other with each passing page. It's adorable, really. He tries not to care for her because he doesn't want her involved. But their feelings couldn't be stopped!

Also worth mentioning - I've not read any of the books in this series, nor have I read any of Grant's other books. I was confused when "Ice Queen" was brought up. I thought Gianna was also a non-human, but she isn't. From what I understand, "Ice Queen" is the Dragon King's chosen mate, and Sebastian calls her that time after time. But she is human!

This novella didn't feel too short like most novellas do, which I appreciated. There is a lot of swoony and sexy romance, but there is plenty of action too. This book involves a lot of dragons, fae, and even a Druid. It's an exciting story, right up until the end. The ending itself is lovely.

What I Did Not Like:

While this novella was a great length, of course I wouldn't have minded more! More sexy times too. But alas, therein lies the rub - this is a novella! Again, this novella didn't feel rushed or too short. But I would have loved more!

Would I Recommend It:

Any fan of Donna Grant should read this novella - it is definitely worth it. I often think that novellas are a waste of time because they are so short and might not add much to the series - but this novella is a standalone story and it is so fantastic. Adult PNR fans, this novella is wonderful! I might go as far as to recommend the series in general, but this is the only story of the series that I've read. But I may check them out! At the very least, the other two 1,001 Dark Nights novellas Grant has written.

Rating:

4.5 stars. I loved Sebastian and Gianna's story, and I definitely want more! I'm going to check out the series. Maybe future books, in hopes of catching a glimpse of Sebastian/Gianna cameos. It would be nice!

Book Review For Dragon Burn by Donna Grant 'Dragon Burn' by Donna Grant is book 11.5 in the "Dark Kings" series. This is the story of Sebastian and Gianna. This book is about 120 pages long and this can be a standalone book. Sebastian is working to prove his friend Ulrik was not responsible for what happened to the Dragon Kings. Ulrik was stripped of his Dragon status and that made him just plan human. Gianna works for the person that Sebastian thinks could be behind on the trouble that the Dragon Kings have been having. So Sebastian is working to get close to Gianna to try and get the information he is looking for. Gianna was once married and is very leary of men and relationships. So at first Gianna knows that Sebastian is handsome and he does stir feelings she has never felt before....but can she trust him, Sebastian needs her trust to get the information he needs but how will Gianna feel when she learns the truth. I total love Ms. Grant's books and this one did not disappoint. Dragon Burn is a quick and short novella.

I read the prequels #0.1, #0.2, & #0.3 several years ago, but never got back to reading the others in the series. I knew from those two books that something was going on, but not fully what. My understanding from Dragon Burn is that their is a Dragon trying to expose the Dragons to humans, but the other Dragons don’t want this, so their is a war going on.

Sebastian is one of the Dragon Kings who is looking for information on one of his brother Dragon Kings. Gianna is the personal assistant to the person Sebastian suspects is behind all the troubles the Dragon Kings are having.

Sebastian and Gianna where nice together. The romance is quick and insta-love. The chemistry is fiery. Theirs danger, trust issues, magic, ulterior motives, and a mystery on who is trying to expose the Dragons.

I enjoyed Dragon Burn though I might have enjoyed it more if I had read more books in the series.

I really liked Sebastian and Gianna together. Sure, the book was short but we'll get to meet Sebastian and Gianna in the other books again just like we do with all the other couples.

I'm glad the druid didn't take away more memories than she did. I thought she'd take away Sebastian's and Gianna's memories of each other and their love. I still hate that she took away the memories they had of Mikkel of course.

Also... This just supports my theory that Con is Rhi's DK. I wrote down my theory of Con and Rhi memories of each other being taken away somehow in one of the other books not too long ago. I could still be wrong of course but that there's a druid that can take away memories just supports the theory I have. I really hope Con is Rhi's Dragon King.

Once upon a time I read the very first novella in this series and liked it. I even added the first full length book to my TBR. And then my book ADD must have kicked in because I didn't read it. Or any of the following books or novellas, but decided to jump on in there for book eleven and a half. What was I thinking? Evidently there is a WHOLE PLOT for the series and I have missed it all. Could I follow along? Sure. Would I have liked it more if I read the other stuff first? Most definitely. Am I kicking myself for not reading the other books yet? Oh, yes I am.

The action was amazing when we got to the showdown between Sebastian and Mikkel. The setting was awesome for the whole book...it helped with the romance and mystery of Sebastian and Gianna and what was going on with them. I'm interested to see what will happen to them because of what went down in here. Not to mention, the whole reason Sebastian was in Venice in the first place or what happened to the Light Fae at the end.

Time for my review, and please excuse me if I go on a fangirl rant!

In my mind, I recognize that this is a novella, and those really don't do much to move major story arc's along. They are mostly based on the couple in the story. However, I am a big fan of this series whole story arc so I was loving that Dragon Burn revealed as much and gave as much time to it.

Sebastian and Gianna were great. Their romance was a whirlwind, and there was a point where I thought that Donna Grant was going to rip my heart out. I really did. Sebastian causes such great changes in Gianna and it is great to see her break out of her shell and develop throughout the story. She breaks out of her solitude life into this great, independent and determined character. What she was willing to sacrifice was amazing.

I was surprised with Sebastian's character. His take on the war and who was behind it was SO what I had been wanting the Dragon Kings to see. He is out to prove there is more to the acts of war than what they have all been thinking. I think I wanted to cheer when I read his outlook on the whole thing. I've been waiting for someone to figure this out. I was SO excited!

I can't ruin it by slipping in spoilers in here, but I was pretty frustrated at the end. I know I'm too into a series when I try to give my kindle a talking to and explain how I think that story should have ended! Dragon Burn had me on an emotional roller coaster and had me daydreaming about what was happening often. It could definitely be read on it's own considering Sebastian is not a big character yet, and what happens to the story at the end. What I recommend though, is that you grab this series and delve into this world of hot dragons and all the baggage that comes with being a dragon in today's world. Just take a look at this video if you doubt me!

Here's a quick look at what to expect in Dragon Burn!

Seduction can come upon you like a whisper, brushing against your skin with a subtle promise. It can surround you like warm velvet, its caress provocative and tempting. It can blitz you, overwhelming your senses until there is only one thought—him.
Gianna didn’t know when, she didn’t know how, but Sebastian’s seduction had flooded her like the wispy fingers of mist before effortlessly besieging with the skill of a warlord.

Ever since she found herself in his arms the night before, she hadn’t been able to get him out of her mind. Not even work could shove him aside.

She’d passed the night weighing his offer of spending the day with him. She waffled back and forth until she finally dozed off. When she woke and got into the shower, she still hadn’t come to a decision.

As she’d left her home that morning, she’d told herself she was going for coffee. And ended up at the Piazza San Marco.
With him.

She’d seen him long before he noticed her. It gave her a chance to study him at leisure. He wore black slacks and a button-down in a purple so deep in color it was almost black. The black leather jacket sat upon his wide shoulders like an afterthought instead of a necessity.

The breeze was gentle, ruffling the ends of his golden brown hair that swept atop his shoulders. He studied the architecture around him, not with wonder, but...almost as if it was intruding.

Not once did he appear to notice any of the women who endeavored to capture his attention. Yet he looked down and smiled at the pigeons who came close to him. And he gazed at children with a kind of amazement, like he wasn’t sure what to think of them, but he couldn’t look away.

Like she couldn’t stop staring at him.

Then he turned and locked eyes with her. Her heart had actually tripped over itself. Not once in her life had she ever experienced such a reaction to anything. Chills raced over her body that had nothing to do with the cool temperatures and everything to do with the enigmatic, baffling man who held her utterly spellbound.

His smile was both sensual and secretive. She didn’t remember what he said after he walked to her. It had been a question, and she’d agreed. The next thing she knew, they were having coffee.

To say she was shocked to find herself talking so readily to him was an understatement. What was it about him that made her feel comfortable? Relaxed, even?

As they walked from the café, his hand rested on the small of her back. The pressure of his palm against her was so profound that, for a moment, she wondered if she had on clothes, because it felt as if he were touching her skin.

Donna Grant returns to the Dark Kings world with this novella about Sebastian and Gianna. First off, when I first started this book, I immediately wished it was a full-length novel. Bast is such a great hero that I really wished we could have more of his character. I love that he was worried about his friend in the beginning for falling for a human, but ultimately fell for someone like Gianna.

Gianna was also a character that I found interesting. The thing with Donna Grant’s characters are that they are all very calm and steady. While that may seem boring to some, I find it comforting. You really get the sense that they are comfortable with themselves even if they are having a hard time. This makes the romance that much more believable because it becomes about two people will are together because they love and care about each other and because they need the other in order to survive.

Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book is the setting. Set in Italy, you really get the vibe of being there and I love how the setting connected with Gianna’s character. It really brought her to life.

Once again, Grant did an amazing job with this story. I will continue to look forward to the next book in this series and if you haven’t tried Grant’s books before, I would highly suggest starting with the first book in the series.

Dragon Burn is novella number 14 in the 2017 1,001 Dark Nights line-up and is also part of author Donna Grant's incredible Dark Kings world. Ms. Grant writes dragons like nobody's business and I have loved reading her fantastic paranormal for years now and with every one of her releases I fall more and more in love with the worlds she builds.

What do you get when you take a woman who's been hurt and sworn off love and a Dragon King on a mission to find the person responsible for a war in his world and put them together? Incredible passion and chemistry, that's what. Sebastian is on a mission and when he believes Gianna may be the key to finding what he's looking for, it's game on! He's sexy, and charming, and speaks with a Scottish brogue. Good luck resisting that! Of course, as his plan is put into motion, real feelings and a real connection start to grow and it's at that moment that I knew cooking dinner that night would have to wait, because no way was I putting this story down until I finished!

Adding to the delicious heat and chemistry was the mystery as to who was responsible for the war. I won't give anything away but I will say, buckle up my friends, for twists, turns, and danger. Loved it all!

Whether you're just picking up a Donna Grant story for the first time with Dragon Burn, or are a long-time fan, I know you will love this story as much as I did! Thank you, Ms. Grant, for another phenomenal read!

I love the name Sebastian and I'm in a HUGE paranormal mood lately. It 's all I want to read.

That said, I loved this book. No, I hadn't read anything from this series beforehand. But I've since fixed that oversight. I've devoured the group of novellas called Dark Heat and book one, Darkest Flame. I've bought the first 5 books and will be devouring them in order. That's what this book did to me.

Okay, I love dragons. I love strong women who bring strong men to their knees. I love how those strong men are super protective and how adorable they are as they figure out they've lost their heart. Add to that all the paranormal stuff and I'm hooked.

I NEEDED the back story. What is going on in this world where dragons are not know but actually belonged here before humans. Why are they fighting another dragon? Why do they protect humans? Why do they hide who they are?

The characters are well written with lots of depth. Sebastian is determined to help an old friend that he feels he let down. He goes against his king to try to gain information only to fall for the love of a woman. Gianna is doing her own kind of hiding after a bad divorce. Sebastian brings her back to herself. They are right for each other.

The story is fast paced and full of yummy moments. It's also full of danger and mysteries that the Kings have been facing and still need to figure out. It definitely had me wanting more.

If you haven't fallen into this series yet and you enjoy the paranormal side of romance, then get on this series and quick!

Of my 1600+ books I can honestly say that Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings books and novellas are my all-time favorites.

With every new book there’s a new gorgeous Dragon King and a beautiful heroine. There’s never a surprise of a too plump, too plain, too whatever, that I have to worry about dealing with, like sooo many authors are doing today. Love her characters. (Shallowness showing here.)

Plus, I love all the secondary characters, too: Constantine, Rhi, Ulrik, Mikkel, and every other dragon and their mate that fill the books. She writes the perfect good guy and the perfect bad guy, too.

This one was about Sebastian and Gianna who met in Venice. They fell in love and had to battle the dark fae and that evil Mikkel and Eilish. I’ll be glad when they’re killed.

And, of course, this book tells you something really, really new. So, all of you who keep up with the Dragon Kings books will be as surprised as I was, I’m sure.

These books do continue on with the next book but every single one is a stand-alone. The two MC’s get their HEA and there’s the opening for another book. NO CLIFFHANGERS. Thank God…

I wish Ms. Grant could write faster. Or she could get other writers to help. I absolutely love the books and novellas. Hmmm… I also love her Reaper books and the Chiasson series and LaRue series. Besides all the novellas, I’ve read or listened to all 11 of her Dragon King books.

Sebastian is on the hunt to find the enemy. His quarry proves to be hard to locate. He needed someone who can point him in the right direction. Her name is Gianna Santini. Gianna has information that she doesn't even know she has. Sebastian will use all his seduction skills that he has acquired over his immortal life, to get what he is seeking. Until he discover that the passion he stirs in Gianna makes his passion burns even hotter in him. Getting close to Gianna, Sebastian has now put her in danger. He will do anything to make sure that Gianna will not be destroyed alone with the rest of the Dragon Kings in this war.

I absolutely love Donna Grant's Dragon King series. So was excited to start Dragon Burn as I know I was in for a fantastic addition filled with heart, steam, romance and the sexy chemistry that has made this a much beloved series. I also loved Sebastian and Gianna and felt this was an amazing addition to the series. I could not get enough!

When Dragon King, Sebastian, sets his sights on Gianna Santini sparks fly. But this dangerous and elusive Dragon has an ulterior motive by secretly getting close to Gianna. Years ago his Dragon King brother Ulrik was banished for crimes Sebastian believes was ultimately committed by Gianna's boss, Mikkel. As a result, he is on a mission to gather evidence proving this to bring back to his leader, clearing Ulrik's name. But what happens when the chemistry between Sebastian and Giana burns flaming hot and emotions become involved? PURE FIREWORKS, folks!

I really enjoyed this story. The chemistry and connection was fiery and the emotions just as strong. While there is a little bit of insta-love going on here, I just went with it as this was a short novella. All in all, I can't wait for more from this author in the future. Bravo! 4 stars ~Ratula

Good for a novella

However, a few things bugged me. Like the use of trite phrases, e.g. “like no tomorrow” or “with every fiber of her/his being”. Authors need to be more creative with their phrasing and avoid such clichéd prose.

This should really have been a novel as there was enough going on in the story to support it.

There were also some unanswered issues that I hope will be addressed in the next book in the series.

I am a massive fan of Donna Grant’s books so I was delighted to be able to get my hands on this novella which is part of the 1001 Dark Nights Series and also book 11.5 in the Dark King series which features my favourites – the Dragon Kings!!

The book is only a novella but it crams in as much for me as one of the full length novels.  I loved the story and the character of Gianna was great, the rest of the characters are pretty much well known from the other books in the series and this features several of the Dragon Kings in main roles, not just the normal one so I had even more of a treat!  It is an excellent book and I am so glad that I saved reading it to cheer me up!

Five stars from me and looking forward to reading more from Donna in her new series that releases later on this month!  She is definitely one of my favourite authors!!

In Dragon Burn, Donna Grant’s newest release and book #11.5 in the Dark Kings series, we follow Sebastian as he goes to Venice to track down Ulrik and/or Mikkel. Once upon a time, Sebastian was very good friends with Ulrik (it sounds like he might have been the closest king to Ulrik beyond Con) and even centuries later he still aches for the Kings to be fully reunited. At the start of Dragon Burn, Sebastian begins to search for evidence of Ulrik’s long-lost uncle, Mikkel in Venice. His plan is to seduce Mikkel’s assistant and procure every ounce of information she has on her employer. Once Sebastian meets Gianna though, his plan changes. Gianna intrigues him, she’s a loner who dresses in pink tweed, and the dichotomy of her makes him want to know more. So as Sebastian seduces Gianna for her information, he also begins to fall for her. Thus the dilemma…can Sebastian obtain the information he requires while protecting Gianna? Or has his presence already put her life at risk?

There were some truly brilliant elements woven throughout this novella. My absolute favorite thing about this novella, though, was Gianna’s introduction to the Dragon King origin story. She actually hears the story second hand, while her life’s in danger. Even more unique, Gianna hears the story from an enemy of the Kings. As a reader, this telling of the origin story had me completed captivated. Gianna’s unique introduction to the origin of the Dark Kings gave me a glimpse of the men of Dreagan through a different lens than I had explored before. It was fascinating.

The other great thing about this novella was the tremendous forward progress in the overall Dark Kings story arc. Seriously, this isn’t really a novella you’ll want to miss if you are Grant fan. Although most of the Kings didn’t have a part to play in this particular novella, we got to see lots of Ulrik, Mikkel, Con, and Sebastian. I walked away from this book with more information about Con and Ulrik than I ever had before and more than I had expected to receive in such a short amount of pages.

Sadly there was something that I didn’t love about this novella that cast a shadow over the romance for me. Throughout Dragon Burn, Sebastian referenced Gianna in a way that really, really bothered me. He calls her an “ice queen” and “frigid” several times and I’m going to be honest, it distracted me from the story to the point that I had to put the book down. I’ve certainly read about “ice queen” heroines before, but in most books with this particular trope, the hero comes to realize his initial assessment of the heroine was incorrect. I didn’t feel like Sebastian and Gianna ever reached that type of appreciation for one another in Dragon Burn. I don’t need every heroine I read in romance to be warm and bubbly, but I finished the book not knowing if Sebastian really “got” Gianna. It was a bummer for sure.

Even with my little unease over Sebastian and Gianna’s appreciation for one another, this book should not be missed by readers of the Dark Kings series. Dragon Burn moves the larger story arc of the Dark Kings forward rapidly in very few pages and the revelations really shouldn’t be missed for anyone keeping up with the series. 3.5 stars for Dragon Burn by Donna Grant!

DRAGON BURN is a novella in her Dark Kings series, (Book 11.5!) and really best enjoyed when read in order. I’ve liked SMOKE AND FIRE, FIRESTORM, and BLAZE, so I’m eager to reach the “climax” of this sexy series.

Sebastian is a Dragon King who promised to help Ulrik no matter what centuries ago, and he regrets having to bind Ulrik’s magic to prevent the destruction of humanity centuries ago. He doesn’t believe that Ulrik is the menace behind the troubles facing the Dragon Kings of Dreagan. So, he’s off to Venice to investigate a lead in the search for Ulrik. It seems there’s a man who looks quite a lot like Ulrik operating there under the name of Oscar Cox, and Seb believes him to be Ulrik’s disgruntled uncle Mikkel in disguise. Seb positions himself to meet Cox’s beautiful American assistant, Gianna Santini, in order to gain access to her boss and discover his true identity.

Gianna is done with relationships. Divorced and bitter, she eschews meeting men and prefers to be solitary–filling her time with her work for “Oscar Cox,” a powerful British man to whom she’s an assistant. She loves Mr. Cox’s power and how quickly she’s risen within his company. Still, the man seated beside her for the past two nights at her favorite tavern is quite attractive. And, when she strikes up the nerve to chat with him, Seb’s brogue is tasty, too.

They begin a tentative acquaintance, and Gianna is intrigued by Seb’s sensuality and chivalry. Both are drawn to the other, and this is odd for many reasons; Gianna’s not interested in having alover after her disastrous marriage and Seb’s sworn to not take a human lover. Still, they have an easy-going day sharing breakfast and sightseeing. Gianna, wanting to experience more of the thrill of Seb, invites him to the masquerade ball she’s arranged–hosted by Oscar–and that’s when things get hinky.

Seb’s as attracted to Gianna as he’s ever been to any being. And, he’s conflicted about setting himself in her path, because she’s clearly in trouble. At the ball Seb’s suspicions are confirms, and Gianna’s boos recognizes that another Dragon King has been in contact with her. Expect capture, torture and potential casualties. Okay, definite casualties of you count Dark Fae henchmen in the body count. Seb’s connection to Gianna and Constatntine, King of the Dragon Kings, enables him to find out the truth behind Ulrik’s betrayal and Mikkel’s role in their millenia-old feud. Seb also meets the powerful Druid who’s been summoned to destroy both Ulrik and Constantine.

There’s still plenty of plotlines to weave together; this novella is a rather self-contained romance for Seb and Gianna, though it adds some critical pieces to the mix…if only Seb and Gianna could remember what those were. Dang Druids and their memory stealing charms. If my count is correct, partnering Seb with Gianna means that only Constantine and Ulrik are single Dragon Kings–and I expect they will find mates and settle scores in the final book, which I’d expect to come out in the coming months.

Dragon Burn
By: Donna Grant

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review by Kristie K

A shifter romance with plenty of heat…and where there is heat, there’s fire…

As a true lover of shifter romance, Dragon Burn was right up my alley. This novella focuses on the Dragon King Sebastian, and his mission to uncover the mysteries and secrets surrounding his friend and fellow Dragon King Ulrik, banished from their world of Dreagan for the acts he committed. Sebastian has theories as to what really happened during those dark days, but can’t ask for an investigation without some form of proof. To prove his theories, Sebastian heads to Venice, and plans to seduce the personal assistant to a powerful businessman that he believes is directly connected to the events surrounding his friends banishment. The only problem is, when he finally connects with the fiery redhead, it is she who seduces him without even trying. The connection between the two is immediate, and powerful. What started out as a mission in seduction, quickly becomes something much, much more. When the evil they are hunting becomes the hunter, things become much more dangerous.

I was absolutely captivated by the blurb, and as I began to read the story reeled me in. From cover to cover, I was enthralled. The characters were amazing, well developed and presented in a way that made them relatable and desirable. They carried a depth of feeling, and personalities that made me love them. As the 11.5 installment of the Dark Kings Series, there is a lot of previous action and storyline leading up to this novella. Since I am not as familiar with this series as I’d like to be, I was just a bit lost at times, though was able to catch up (for the most part) as the story continued. If you are able, I would definitely recommend reading at least some of the previous series first, but can say that it isn’t necessarily a requirement. The plot and storyline were well developed, as they continue a long standing series with familiar characters. My one complaint was the way the book came to such an abrupt end. It felt a bit rushed, and left me with more questions than answers. Now, I’m as much of a sucker for a good cliffhanger as the next bibliophile, but this one left me feeling a little too cold. Despite these two relatively minor issues for me, I LOVED the book, read it cover to cover in one sitting, and would recommend it (and the rest of the series, in turn) to other lovers of paranormal romance.

I haven't read the previous books in this series, but there are enough snippets in Dragon Burn to give a general overview of what's going on. Although this can be read as a standalone, I would have liked to have read the previous books.

Sebastian is one of the Dragon Kings who resides in Scotland. There is a war going on and the dragons have secluded themselves away from the humans to avoid being detected. Even though, there is a suspect in regards to the start of this war, there is a big question mark! Sebastian intends to find the evidence, once and for all.

Gianna was divorced after a short marriage and now dedicates her time to her work. She is a valued personal assistant to a business tycoon. She doesn’t socialise. Her work is her life!

Sebastian takes a trip to Italy, where he has reasons to believe that he can find the culprit. Gianna might well be the key to the success of his mission. He starts off by seducing her to get the information he requires. Being an ice queen, Gianna doesn't usually respond to these seductions, but she is intrigued by this brogue Scottish. Who can blame her?! He thinks that it will be a quick and easy job and soon realises that he is just as intrigued by her. She has an effect that goes right to his soul and they discover that there is a deep connection between them. By the time he realises that he has put her in danger, it might just be a little too late! Can he resolve the problem and leave her unscathed?

This short story has many twists and turns. There are doubts about the real suspect. It becomes apparent that the whole thing has been orchestrated and the true motivation for the war is exposed. Dark Faes and Druids are involved. Sebastian is loyal to his friends and his feelings for Gianna are deep rooted. Gianna's reaction to this exposure is the opposite of what the enemy expects. The final twist has left me wanting for more! An exciting read.

I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

The seductive passion of a dragon thaws an ice queen…

This is the book 11.5 in the Dark Kings series of novella length.

The Dragon King Sebastian was once friends with Ulrik, the king of the silvers, yet he did not stand by his friend during his time of need and for that he has regrets. Feeling there might be someone else behind all that has happened, with a faint memory of another silver, Sebastian heads to Venice following a lead. He finds more than he expected, the truth the others need to know and a mortal woman who makes his blood burn, his mate. To get to his target he had to get close to a woman who appears cold and reserved yet melts at his words and his touch.

As an assistant to a wealthy man, Gianna Santini’s work is her life, she’s a loner; apathy is her constant companion. Some would call her an ice queen, she needs no one besides herself; her independence after a failed marriage is freedom. She was surprisingly intrigued when she met an intelligent, gorgeous, sexy man with a Scottish brogue. He thaws the coldness inside, he makes her remember the woman she once was before it all changed, that which was buried deep inside rises like the phoenix from the ashes. When she learns what he is, she doesn’t run, he’s beautiful in both forms. She never knew what made her obtain a dragon tattoo when she was young and now that she’s seen Sebastian’s full-bodied one it can only be fate that binds them.

Sebastian’s presence in Gianna’s life does not go unnoticed, she’s now expendable to the man she works for. Alone in Venice without dragon support close by Sebastian will go it alone to protect what’s now his and obtain the proof he needs. Can they survive the machinations of a mad power hungry silver? Can Constantine reach them in time?

With each book I read in this series I fall farther into this amazing contemporary world of dragons and other paranormal creatures. I’m captivated by the depth of the characters, the passion between them, and the highly imaginative suspenseful storylines. This book has an insidious twist that’ll make you gasp when you realize what’s going to happen, just as Sebastian learns the truth the other kings need to hear the strong druid returns to thwart his efforts but not as badly as she could have. Hopefully the little Sebastian had mentioned to Constantine before he dived in alone will be enough for the kings to decipher the true identity of their combatants. I loved this novella, I’m looking forward to more.

Unlike some novellas that only add to a story and can therefore be skipped, I think the Dark Kings ones should not be. They always continue the story and introduce important things. So I made sure to get this one before I started reading book 12. And it was good. Especially toward the end.

Sebastian has gone to Venice in order to prove that it is not Ulrik causing all of the Kings's troubles. We learn of the strong friendship the two of them had before and it's the driving force behind Sebastian's actions here. Following a lead, he picks his target and that just happens to be Gianna.

Gianna moved to Italy after a nasty divorce and now dedicated everything of herself to her job. As the personal secretary to a powerful business man, it's a demanding job. Even so, she never takes any time for herself and doesn't even have any friends. When Sebastian enters her life, he starts to change her and how she sees things.

It didn't take long for the two of them to fall for the other. The old "there's just something about them" going on full strength here. But I was okay with it. Sebastian had intended to get her to fall for him, get his information, and leave. What he didn't expect was how she would make him feel the more he learned about her. Really, his plan for digging up information is a complete bust because #1 he doesn't want to use Gianna like that, and #2 Mikkel takes the upper hand first.

Mikkel is surprised to find out about Sebastian being there and not Ulrik, which leads to us learning a lot more about how this whole war even started. Unfortunately, Mikkel does have his druid and while she refuses to obey part of his orders, she does steal the memories of anything to do with Mikkel from the both of them. Leaving Sebastian knowing even less than when he got there. And oh my gawd, did that frustrate me! To finally learn something of importance only to have it snatched away before he could share it drove me crazy.

On a positive note, Con finally lifted his ban on them shifting. Something they all desperately needed.

Now on to the next one.

4.25 stars--DRAGON BURN by Donna Grant is the August 2017 novella in her contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal /fantasy romance series, and the latest installment in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights series. This is Dragon King Sebastian, and PA Gianna Santini’s story line. DRAGON BURN can be read as a stand alone but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order as there is a continuing theme and building story line throughout.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland. The Dark Fae and their King Taraeth, along with the Ulrik the Silver Dragon King and his uncle Mikkel have declared war on the Dragon Kings by exposing the dragon’s existence to humankind. The last wars between man and the world of the paranormal saw a great loss of life on all sides-but Ulrik wants revenge against King Constantine of the Dragon Kings.

Told from several third person perspectives including Sebastian and Gianna DRAGON BURN follows another Dragon King as he finds his mate amongst the human population. Sebastian is on a quest, in search of an enemy once thought missing or dead. Enter Gianna Santini, PA to one of the most powerful men in the world, but a man who is neither human nor the person he is proclaiming to be. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Gianna and Sebastian, and the fall out when Gianna steps in where she doesn’t belong.

DRAGON BURN reveals an important piece of missing information about the past; a piece of history buried and unknown but a revelation that may change the dragon’s destiny, and the looming potential for another war. The premise is intriguing, revealing and poignant; the characters are colorful and energetic; the romance is provocative and quick to build-a story of insta-lust/love where a Dragon King is tamed by the woman that calls to his soul.

Venice is the magical background for Dragon Burn. Following a hunch that kept nagging at him after something that Anson overheard while in captivity by the dark fae, Bastian headed to Italy in search of answers. There his goal is to approach the gorgeous redhead that assists the man he is after. Oscar is just one of the many alliases that Michael or Ulrik uses. Figuring out who the man behind the name is, will take tact. Gianna Santini is very good at her job. After a failed marriage, all she had wanted was to start fresh somewhere else. That's when the job opportunity in Venice appeared. For the past few years she not only excelled at it, but she assumed the responsibility of running her boss' operations in his stead. Since she arrived, she had focused solely on her work, until a stunning Scot heated her blood and took over her thoughts. Sebastian knew he would need to tread carefully in order to captivate a woman like Gianna. But with each contact he has with the gorgeous mortal, he becomes uncertain of who is seducing whom. In a mascarade ball, all guises will be shed and unexpected danger will change everything. Sebastian is by far the most seductive of all dragons so far. He is smooth and charismatic, he determined to clear Ulrik's name of any crimes he might not have committed. He knew the king of the silvers wasn't without blame in the many problems the kings have been facing recently, but something told him there was another foe that had been overlooked. Michael's reign of terror seems to be coming to an end as more of the truth is revealed in Dragon Burn, but between a misguided druid and faes, fans will need to wait a wee longer before all is said and done...

"Dragon Burn" by Donna Grant. Book 11.5 in the Dark Kings series.

I really enjoyed this novella in the Dark Kings series. The main characters are Dragon King Sebastian and Gianna, a human woman who is the assistant of the Kings' enemy. Even though this novella is part of a series, you can absolutely read it as a stand alone, although I do suggest reading the series because you will be more familiar with the side-characters and the overall story line of the series.

Sebastian is on a mission to Venice. He's determined to find out if Ulrik is working with his uncle Mikkel or if they are each working on their own to start a war with Con, King of Dragon Kings, and destroy all humans. Ulrik was one of his best friends before he was banished. So to prove that Ulrik is innocent of past wrongs (at least some of them), Sebastian's plan is to seduce Gianna, Mikkel's human assistant, and use her to get the information he needs. The last thing he expected was to develop feelings for her.

Gianna moved to Venice after a painful divorce and immersed herself in her work as assistant to her boss, Oscar Cox, and running his Venice operations. She doesn't have time for romance or any type of relationship. When she meets Sebastian, there's just something about him that's different. When she takes a chance and opens her heart again, she never expected to have her world turned upside down.

Such a great addition to this series. I really liked the main characters of Gianna and Sebastian. Gianna is strong and independent but has closed off her heart and struggles with letting herself feel free. Sebastian is very confidant and focused on his mission but struggles with his mission when his emotions for Gianna surface. The story is fast paced and flows really smoothly. The romance between Sebastian and Gianna is seductive and steamy. The ending of this novella teases the reader as to future potential story lines within the series.

Overall, I really liked this novella and I will definitely continue to read more of them within the 1001 Dark Knights collection.

Wow was this one Hot, Hot, Hot!! I’ve read several of Donna’s Dark Kings series and they just keep getting better and better. Spoiler Alert though: There is a cliffhanger in this one. Which I absolutely hate, but for Donna and the Dark Kings, I’ll take it. Especially since it’s a hallmark of any 1001 Dark Nights novella, or otherwise we’d lose Sheherazade.

Because this is a novella the action starts fast and never lets up. I do love how she uses the illusion of a little magic to make the girl give in to her inner voice and let things happen. I think this is the only way the story could be complete in such a short time. If you try to look at Gianna’s emotional struggle from a sense of reality she would give in too fast, but with the illusion of magic, makes it work.

The best scene is when they are walking in San Marco square and she believes that it is very crowded and it gives Sebastian the opportunity to touch her a lot. Funny though, it turns out Sebastian kept leading her into crowds of people so he could touch her.

Worst scene, after the big fight they go back to his place and find a Druid in his bedroom. After how suspicious and cautious he is the rest of the time and he doesn’t even look around his home knowing that the evil ones are looking for him and Gianna. That’s all I’m going to tell about that scene or I’ll ruin the rest of the story.

So overall I give Dragon Burn 4 of 5 propellers it didn’t get a 5 because of my idea of the worst scene and it has a cliffhanger. Oh and Donna, can we have more of their story, please, pretty please???

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review.

I've not read any book in this series before now.  I will tell you it's probably a must to have done so though you can pretty much pick up on what's happened in this novella and where it's going from here.  Sebastian is a Dragon King sent to seduce Gianna for information about her boss.  She's known in the community as the Ice Queen.  She rebukes any man's invitation to get close or even just casual hello.

Sebastian is looking for key information that will help him help a couple of his friends and fellow Dragon Kings.  The weight of the responsibility falls on his shoulders from a promise previously made and he's determined to see it through.  He just wasn't counting on what Gianna would bring into his life, and what she would mean to him.

He knows her as the Ice Queen but she seems to thaw pretty easily when she's around Sebastian.  They have easy conversation and the information he's searching for he doesn't think she can easily obtain it for him.  Which makes him feel much better about his attraction to Gianna.

So as I'm relaying all of this to you - I'm trying to avoid key points about this story.  Because they're spoilers.  There's a bit of action.  Some suspicion, and some treason - depending on how you look at it.  This was an interesting story to read.  I will want to learn more about these dragon's and their world from reading this novella.

Listening to ‘Masquerade’ by Lindsey Stirling while writing this review.

It’s too bad - this book could have easily been written as a full length novel.

I again enjoyed the change of location for the series, this time in Venice, Italy (not that Dreagan, Scotland is boring). I liked Dragon King, Sebastian, and unwitting personal assistant to Mikkel, Gianna. The plot was well written, the pace of the story was pretty good considering it was a novella, there was an adequate amount of action and suspense, and I thought the romance between the hero and heroine was pretty steamy.

Unfortunately, as what seems to be a common downfall for many Dark Kings books, there isn’t much backstory for either of the main characters, other than Sebastian’s relationship with Ulrik. Despite such minor criticism, this is still one of the few Dark Kings books that I felt contentedly immersed in.

“Seduction can come upon you like a whisper, brushing against your skin with a subtle promise. It can surround you like warm velvet, its caress provocative and tempting. It can blitz you, overwhelming your senses until there is only one thought - him.

Gianna didn’t know when, she didn’t know how, but Sebastian’s seduction had flooded her like the wispy fingers of mist before effortlessly besieging with the skill of a warlord.” - Chapter 4 ‘Dragon Burn’

As for the Venetian masks worn in this story? They may not be effective during the current pandemic…but they’re definitely sexier.

He was fire. She was ice. But with him... she burned.

Dragons and Venice and masquerade balls- oh my! This novella was my first experience with the author's Dark Kings series and it was wonderful! Although it is a part of a well-established series, I feel like it was a great introduction to that world and I didn't feel lost at all as I was reading Sebastian and Gianna's story.

The stage is set in the prologue where Bast and his best friend Ulrik are discussing Ulrik's upcoming mating to a human. It is an unprecedented occurrence for a Dragon King but Bast vows to support his best friend no matter what happens. He just has no idea what keeping that promise will come to entail hundreds of years later.

Now Ulrik has been banned from Dreagan, the dragon realm, but Bast believes he has been set up by the true guilty party and he feels it is his duty to clear his friend's name. In order to do that, he must get close to the personal assistant of the man he suspects as the true culprit, a woman he dubs the Ice Queen after studying her but he is about to be proven very wrong. Bast soon learns that Gianna is a woman whose fire just hasn't been sparked by the right man yet... and he is that man.

Amidst intrigue and his search for the truth, Bast finds himself drawn to Gianna and that attraction is far from one sided. Neither can understand the pull between them but giving into it is inevitable. This story had a wonderful mix of richly detailed settings, colorful characters and sizzling chemistry that leapt off the pages. If this novella is any indication of the rest of the series, I need to start adding these books to my TBR now!
