Confession Duet #1

Before the Lie

Rate this book
It was love at first sight.
Not just for me, but for Corbin as well.
Our eyes locked across the room, and that was all she wrote.
But we didn’t rush things.
We wanted to do it right.
After all, we would spend the rest of our lives together.
The love of my life.
My soul mate.
He was the intense and fiercely protective soldier,
and I was his doting and faithful lover.
I found my happily ever after.
This was our story…

Warning: spoilers below.

For the record, this isn’t a review, per se, but more of a reminder/self-note, in the likely event that I forget why this book would never work for me.

Because I read enough of the sample—and conversed with friends who read it in its entirety—to know that this book isn’t for me.

Because the prologue, though not terribly detailed, opens with the heroine being sexually assaulted.

Because, for reasons beyond my capacity to understand, approximately three days after the heroine is raped, she gets a phone call from her husband, who’s been deployed in Afghanistan for four months, and the first thing out of her mouth is not that she’d been raped, but that she’d been unfaithful.

Because, instead of having an honest conversation with her husband, or better yet, waiting to do it in person, she lets him know, apropos of nothing, that she had consensual sex with another man.

Because that asinine “alternative fact” will serve no purpose—other than to create unnecessary drama.

Because the book, short though it is, spans a three-year time period. Only the prologue and epilogue are in present time.

Because the book ends on a cliffhanger.

Because the book is being dragged out into two books.

Because fuck everything about this plot.

*Edited to add - There are potential triggers in this book.

I had a little epiphany with this book. Sometimes when you're reading highly descriptive characters you get a mental image in your mind of who would best fit that character. That's what happened to me when I was reading this and I pictured fitness model Matthew Hosea.

What's funny is that he's the model on this book cover which I didn't see because I got an arc and the author is friends with him. So the book really is based on him as the male lead. LOL

What's good about that is the author has crafted a story around a decidedly delicious guy and a strong, yet timid girl who fell into instant lust and love the minute they saw each other.

This book is an amazing journey at taking a shy, timid girl into what's going to be a submissive relationship that's actually wrapped around deep feelings and love.

That's all well and good until the lie. I hated that part and I hated the fact that this ends on a cliffhanger. Ugh!

I loved the story and the fact that I couldn't put it down as one indicator that this book is a captivating and touching story. Everything is beautiful until the lie and the ending. That sucked. Now I have to wait until the next installment. LOL but it is well worth it.

I'm rating this book "N" for "No, Just... No." First off, it's incredibly predictable. As in, you will have guessed the entirety of the story before you have finished the first few chapters. Second- maybe it's just me but, when reading a novel, I like the things the characters do and say to actually, you know, make sense. The "big lie" that's told at the end of this book was just completely ludicrous. Usually, when people tell a lie, they possess some underlying motivation for doing so (e.g., escaping responsibility, gaining access to something they desire, etc.) Of course, some individuals are pathological liars and are therefore simply compelled to lie regardless of whether or not said lies provide them a means to attaining a desired end. As far as I know, none of the characters in this book are pathological liars- AND YET, the liar in this book tells a lie that serves no purpose whatsoever (aside from creating drama of course). Sure, sure I know his/her professed reason for lying, but if you think about for oh... a nanosecond, you realize that the lie accomplishes nothing and serves no purpose whatsoever. Hear that? That's the sound of my suspension of disbelief shattering... I'm out.

All-consuming....I was *in* this story, I was a part of their timeline, I was where they were, perfect descriptions and scene setting.

Fierce....any alpha soldier will be. Our hero is fiercely loyal, fiercely protective, fiercely independent.

Compelling...I could not put the story down. More on that further down.

Extreme love....You can feel the love between our characters throughout the story, it was pure, it was genuine, it was life-altering.

Ultimate sacrifice....Not one ounce of selfishness in the heroine's body when she makes the biggest sacrifice for our Hero.

Addictive....Simply put, I want more.

Coming up with a string of words that are in any way comprehensible just aren't easy when describing this first book in a new series by KD Robichaux.

We're introduced to Vi - a socially awkward teenager who spends her spare time (and I mean ALL of her spare time) at the local rock climbing facility. Corbin arrives at the centre on a seemingly normal day for Vi but there is an immediate connection between them.

What follows is the sweetest of courtships and the deepest of loves formed through some tough times and over some hurdles.

I adored their interactions, from the moment they met to the relationship that they forged for their own personal forever.

I am guilty of watching that percentage read amount increase while reading a book. I knew this was a duet so as I approached the 100% point my unease was increasing. What I was reading was literary perfection. Vi and Corbin had their happy ever after, they had each other, they were strong together, they has trust and loyalty and an insane chemistry.

Then BOOM! What a shocking ending. I could not put this book down, to the point that I read it in less than 24 hours. It was nearing midnight, I was overdue to go to sleep but there was no stopping me. I had no one to talk to about this because no one else that I knew has read this book so I was on my own in this tailspin of an emotional rollercoaster.

I am so ready for book two and have zero issues with badgering the author for this. It is my first book by KD Robichaux but will definitely not be the last.

Made it to around 40 % and it was a struggle to get that far. I hated everyone in this book, hero is a condescending a*hole and heroine the perfect doormat. Heroine‘s mother sits around a gym 6 hours a day WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE IN THIS BOOK? And what were all the 5-star reviewers reading?

First off, I don't really have triggers so the prologue didn't bother me. I mean, I've read worse. And second, both books 1&2 were available when I read this so the cliffhanger didn't bother me either. The story itself is short but feels long and drawn out with the detailed rock climbing scenes. Like, I feel pretty sure I could scale a cliff with just what I've read here. It was more instructional than I feel it needed to be. But, it also set the groundwork for the actual story in book 2 as well as describes the relationship between Corbin and Vi and how they came to be. It's actually really sweet even if it is on the slow side. I grew to love Corbin, his patient ways, and the way he was there for Vi, encouraging her and protecting her. As for the lie at the end, you have to read book 2 to understand WHY she lied. If you read the Note From the Author at the end, you'll discover why this duet is written like it is. I appreciate that.

WTF just happened here? Seriously, what did I just read? First there's a prologue and I'm like whaaaaaaat? Then there an absolutely beautiful and breathtaking love story and then there's absolutely the worst decision in the history of bad decisions. Vi, baby girl, I can't get behind that! No, no, no!

Okay, rant over, so here we go.

KD Robichaux, if nothing else, you're a mastermind at brutally yanking (tugging would be too mild) on heart strings. Vi is essentially an introvert who discovers rock climbing (indoors only - introvert at work here, people) and eventually meets Corbin a Specialist in the US Army. I usually don't read story laced with military involvement due to my current status as a soldier (I spend more time picking out flaws than enjoying the story), but I was able to overlook any issues I might have had because it actually enjoyed the book. Vi and Corbin don't have a whirlwind romance. Attraction and love are immediate, but they don't rush it, they let it develop over time and that's what this story is about, how their relationship develops. They're perfect for each other, complementing each other in the best ways possible.

I kept expecting some sort of "action," but that isn't what this book is. The synopsis is very vague, so it lends an air of mystery, but I would have liked to know a bit more. Also, I hate the ending (in case you missed that from my initial rant). I totally understood Vi's reasoning, but I'm petty and I still hate it. I hate Corbin's reaction as well. Ten years??? Come on, Corbin. I expect so much more. Also, there were tons of descriptions at Rock On that I could have done without, a little info here and there would have been good, but I didn't need to know exactly how to belay step-by-step in order to understand her love of rock climbing or enjoy the dynamics of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others. I'll blindly purchase more from this author and I'm looking forward to the next installment. Also, that cover - yes, yes, yes.

I did receive Before the Lies as a free ARC Copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a wonderful story of young love. Young True Love. The young lady, Vivian - Vi, is a senior in high school. She has been working at a rock climbing studio for 4 yrs now. She loves rock climbing and everything about it free's her, and let's her be herself. Vi has always been a shy girl. She has been bullied throughout her short life. She's too tall, too skinny, people see her as a target to pick on.

Vi gets to help 2 military guys who come into the rock climbing gym one night. One is Corbin, who she can't keep her eyes off of, the other one, is Brian, who is very tall and lanky looking. Corbin is instantly drawn to Vi, but, he thinks she is much younger than she actually is. Throughout their rock climbing one on one time, Corbin and Vi keep sneaking looks at one another. At the end of the night Corbin asks her how old she is, once she tells him she's 18, he knows he can date her. Corbin is 20, although he is a bit older he knows Vi is the one for him.

Corbin knows Vi is shy and inexperienced in the world, he knows he will need to take time with Vi. He knows she's been sheltered and doesn't know how truly awful the world can actually be.

Vi isn't sure of herself. She has doubts of why Corbin would want to be with her. Corbin reassures her that it is she he wants, no one else. Corbin had a rough teenage years. Now that he is in the military his life is on the straight path. He doesn't know how to handle being with Vi. It's the greatest thing that has happened to him in a long time. He doesn't seem to be cruel to her when he knows she's a virgin and inexperienced. He is there to be with her. Holding her hand, holding her, comforting her, just being around her.

Corbin & Vi have a sweet and wonderful romance. I wish all men were sweet and caring like Corbin is.

The story behind this hot cover was nothing like I was expecting. It was sweet and beautiful innocence, something I'm not that used to in contemporary romances, of late, and I loved every second of it.

Of course, the prologue was quite daunting, and as I read Corbin and Vi's story, I kept wondering at what point Vi got to where this story first took off, because I could not imagine Corbin letting anything like that happening to her. And then, when I got to the end, I was completely gutted, as I'd grown to love these characters more and more with each flip of the page.

Vi and Corbin's relationship wasn't all hot and heavy, sexual tension (okay, there was plenty of that, but it was a bit more subtle). I loved that Corbin was willing to go at her pace, and that he understood her need to take things slow. He pushed her past her boundaries but in a way that felt comfortable, and it was amazing to watch her open up to him as their romance intensified. Corbin was badass, hard muscles, and sexy tattoos on the outside, but he was sweet goodness on the inside. I also loved that Vi didn't just give up the life she loved so much because a handsome face had swept her off her feet. Her passion for climbing drove her and she held onto that, every step of the way.

This was a great setup for the next book. It gave the reader a chance to fall in love with Corbin and Vi, to understand them and their love, and to also understand Vi's reasoning for what she did. I cannot wait to see where their journey takes them, and I can only hope that their love and need for each other will lead them back to the second chance they deserve.

This is the first book that I have read by this author but it will not be my last. I can't wait until Truth Revealed comes out, which I hope is soon because Kayla has left me hanging by my fingertips from the ledge with not much for a handhold or a foothold! I don't want to say to much about the book itself because it would be too easy to spoil things for others! The story-line is very well-written. I really enjoy Kayla's writing style. There are still alot of questions I have about Corbin's backstory, which I an sure are coming in Truth Revealed. I love that I completely connected with these characters! I feel like they are people that I know instead of just characters in a book. But I have to say, I really was not feeling alot of love for this author when I got to the end of the book! It took me a couple minutes of cleansing breaths in and out before I lost the desire to throw my kindle across the room and a nights sleep before I talked myself out of send hate mail to Ms. Robichaux for ending Before The Lie the way she did. Then I re-read her "Note From The Author" and it became pretty clear that it was where Before The Lie needs to end so that Truth Revealed can start. That still doesn't mean I like it! So get busy and get us the next book before the hate mail starts!

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spicy content 🌶🌶🌶/5
Spice quality 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5

This story is absolutely adorable. However there are is a potential trigger in this book and that is SA so be warned.
This book starts off with the prologue where something horrible happens to the Vi who is our MFC. Then it jumps to 3 years before, that is where we meet Vi and Corbin.
Vi is a timid girl who keeps to herself and would rather rock climb then have a social life. In comes Corbin who falls for her the moment he see's her climbing in the gym.

We then are taken on a journey that shows two people falling in love and just wanting to be with each other because they are drawn together like two magnets.
Did I mention that Corbin is in the army? I have never really read anything that had anyone in the army but this book was written really well and believable to me.

I loved each interaction that these two had and her innocence just made it super adorable when trying to navigate a relationship with someone at 18.

However what happens when the book ends on a lie? You will have to read it for yourself to find out.

*TW: graphic sexual assault

I read this on a friend's recommendation, @Brianna. While it isn’t a complicated book it has a predictable plot and is easy to read, I felt the characters lacked the depth I expected from their romantic connection. Their open communication was a refreshing change, aside from the lie—which was fairly obvious to read between the lines of what happened. However, some elements felt quite unrealistic, and the frequent use of "baby girl" whenever he spoke was irritating enough to make me want to put the book down. On a positive note, her relationship with her mother added a touch of realism and kindness, showing her as someone with healthy bonds.

That said, I’m curious to see what happens next, so I’ll move on to the next book, hoping it’s slightly better and more mature.

Beyond the prologue which kicks right off with a potential trigger, and the Epilogue which is a punch to the chest, the rest of the book is actually super sweet, the calm before the storm. There was a lot of detail written into this story, which usually bores me & I certainly would have bet that lots of detail on indoor climbing techniques right off the bat would have been a snooze fest, but there’s something about this authors style that kept me engrossed. I’m straight onto the next one for some second chance goodness.

*4.5 star ARC REVEIW FROM ABIBLIOPHOBIA ANONYMOUS BOOK REVIEWS*

Before the lie, comes their story of where it all began.

Vivian aka Vi and Corbin are total opposite in the personality department. Vi is innocent, nerdy and a rock climber. Corbin is a tattooed Army bad boy with a past. These two together are dynamite, made for each other.

"Maybe if we mix your in-normalness with my boringness, we'll even each other out."- Vi

I believe all women will fall for Corbin and if you don't, there is probably something wrong with you. And everyone could find something they like about Vi. She's sweet, make your teeth hurt sweet.

Before The Lie will make you think. Would you do as Vi did? Would you do it differently? The opening of this book will break you, the ending will smash what's left of your heart, and KD doesn't put it together... she has us waiting.

"Keeping her is worth more than fulfilling my darker needs."- Corbin

KD is one of those author's that writes what she knows, and she doesn't disappoint. I enjoy that with every book, we learn something new. Something we probably wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for her writing. Like in BTL we learn about rock climbing. That shit is cool. Now I want to try it out. Lol!

I'm ready for the rest of their story, I need to see what happens. My heart broke and honestly, I'm pissed. Give us Book 2 and piece together my dang heart, KD!

Gorgeous book, about first and very sweet love. The H is a soldier waiting to be deployed, he has quite a back story. The is 18, a child of older, very loving and supporting parents, who approve of him. When they first meet, she is able to take the lead with the H, but he sees her fears, helps her to grow into a woman, slowly and respectfully, with her parents approval. It is a great love story, it is not all sweet and rosy, this is about a real life, where they end up with broken hearts. Have to read the next book for find what happened and what their future holds. I really loved this book, and will be buying more books from this author

5 Is It Really a Lie? Stars!!!

Every once in a while a book comes along that is unlike any that you've ever read. I'm here to tell you that Before the Lie by KD Robichaux IS that book! This is the story of Vi and Corbin, their meeting and how they fall in love. What's so different about this story you ask? Well, Vi is a beautiful but very shy girl that doesn't really "fit in" with the popular kids in school and because of that, she's kind of turned into herself and spends all her extra time at the rock climbing gym where she's a superstar! For once in her life, her tall, almost too thin body is exactly what's needed to excel at this particular sport. One day Corbin shows up at the gym for a belaying lesson with one of his soldiers under his command and he spots Vi.

Oh and yes Corbin is a hot, sexy and tough Army Specialist that unbeknownst to Vi has some very dark needs when it comes to being with a woman and once he sees our Heroine for the first time it's almost like lightening has struck for both of them....

Talk about creating so much heat with these oh so physical words, I was literally fanning myself. I love it when an author has the ability to bring the reader into the story so much that we lose ourselves in all their words. Ms. Robichaux is a MASTER at doing this. Her character development and storyline are so intense and detail oriented that before I knew what was happening I'd made it through half the book without stopping. To me that's the sign of a book that will stand the test of time and call my name to be read over and over again....but I digress...

Once Corbin makes his intentions clear with Vi, I experienced the joy of watching her come out of her shell and believe that she's everything that a man, she thought was out of her league, can want and desire. In all fairness to Vi, this does cause her some trepidation because she doesn't understand the feelings she has for him, but she knows that she wants to spend time with him. The fact that Corbin is willing to take it slow with her, just made me fall in love with him over and over again. He's got it all, tattooed, alpha, commanding and goes after what he wants in all aspects of his life!

This book moves at just the right pace for these two and I never felt like it was rushed. As the story progresses, we learn so much about both our H/h and while they're truly falling in love, I'm thinking he's going to tell her what he likes in the bedroom, not to scare her away, but to let her know exactly what their life will be like. But first, they have to take that ultimate first step. Remember, Vi is a sweet and innocent young lady that's never had this type of attention from a man let alone an alpha like Corbin. I was so nervous for Vi! I mean think about your first time...was it everything you wanted it to be or was it all rushed and nerve racking...well not for these two and I LOVED this scene so much...

Oh be still my heart!!! I wanted my first time to be this awesome, but alas not so much LOL! Once Vi and Corbin take this step, it's inevitable they're in it forever. His love for her is not anything he ever expected to find. He's a kid that grew up on the rough side and he feels blessed to have her in his life....
"It feels so good being a man who Vi deserves, a fierce yet affectionate protector for my doting and faithful lover, that I haven't minded putting that part of me aside. Keeping her is worth more than fulfilling my darker needs."
One would think this is the beginning of their happily ever after right? Well, don't let the author's words fool you... the title of this book is Before the Lie. What is the lie exactly? And why is it so important? As I got to what is the most crucial part of this story, my mouth was left hanging open and I literally said NOOOOOOO. It can't end like this!!! I for one will be first in line to buy the conclusion of Vi and Corbin's story!!!

Love Vi and Corbin, this was a sweet and beautiful love story from the very beginning!

Vi has led a quiet and sheltered life in a small military town. Due to kids taunting and teasing her in school, she doesn't have many friends and has kept to herself while growing up. She has a very close relationship with her Mom, but doesn't like to worry her about what's going on in school. Vi is not very adventurous and hasn't stuck with many activities in her life, but once a friend introduces her to wall climbing she's found her passion. She feels alive when she's climbing and it becomes something she is really, really good at. She spends all of her free time at the rock wall gym and feels like she can be herself while she's there.

Corbin is military and comes into the gym one day with one of his cadets looking to have some fun outside of their day to day military routine. What he didn't expect to find was Vi, a beautiful young girl that completely captivates his attention. She is nothing like the girls he knew growing up. Corbin had a tough upbringing, grew up in a dangerous town and was in trouble a lot. He joined the military for a better life and couldn't be happier he stumbled upon Vi in this quiet, little military town.

Their relationship journey was so heartfelt and honest. Corbin was so attentive to Vi, she as new to relationships and he took his time every step with her. I totally love him for that. He was a gentleman and didn't push when he knew she wasn't ready for the next steps in their relationship. You could feel the chemistry and love between them. Corbin was so protective of her and she was just an enamored with him. How can you not love a hot, sexy alpha male who adores the woman he loves? Corbin treated her and her parents with nothing but respect.

There is a cliffhanger, "the lie", at the end that will leave you speechless, wondering what the heck just happened and probably screaming at your book. No doubt you will need to immediately one-click Truth Revealed to get the answers to all of your questions!

Before the Lie is the first book that I have read from K.D. Robichaux and loved it. I was lucky to receive an ARC and was captivated from page 1.

The prologue is daring and quite dark and is in the back of your mind while reading Before the Lie. For those with triggers please be warned prior to reading the prologue.

Vi and Corbin are connected from the moment they meet and begin to build a relationship. Vi has been quite sheltered as her life revolves around rock climbing and Corbin has been in the military.
Corbin is sweet and goes at Vi's speed as they get to know each other.

This book is not a stand-a-lone and will continue in Book 2 - Truth Revealed. The book does leave you hanging at the end, but we get to see where Book 2 will take us, which is a relief as I cannot wait for book 2 to be released.

OMG that Cliffy!

This is the first book I've read by KD and it most certainly won't be my last. I actually read Steal You, her novel with CC Monroe first and that's how I got hooked on her writing style. It was so crazy to me how real the relationship between Corbin and Vi was and when I read "Epilogue" I couldn't believe it was really the end. I mean, how could it end like that? But I loved this story. Every good, sexy, raw and emotional part of it.

This is the first book that I have read by this author. Oh my god I absolutely loved this book. KD had me hooked by the end wanting so much more. It was very well written with a great story line and amazing character chemistry. Reading the beginning of the book it doesnt even prepare you for what happens at the end.
Vi is a socially awkward teenager who takes to climbing rocks inside a gym. She spends her last four years of high school doing just that every chance she gets. One day while doing just that the thing that she absolutely loves two man come into the gym and want to climb. She ends up having to teach them and that is when she runs into Corbin. It is instantly chemistry spark between Vi and Corbin. You can feel it when you are reading about their first encounters. I absolutely loved that part of this book. You can clearly see that there is going to be something more between these two.
What follows between these two is the sweetest cutest courtship. It is every girl's dream to have a courtship like the two of them have. Corbin knows that Vi is special and treats her like a queen. They have their happy ever after while dealing with so much that is thrown in front of them. Until one day when Corbin is gone on deployment. Something happens that takes that happiness and throws it right out the window. You literally never see what happens until it happens. It broke my heart to read that part of their love story and left me hanging to see what happens between them.
I could not put this book down .Once i started reading i read it from the beginning all the way to the end. It was extremely gripping and has you hanging on the edge of your seat. I loved that there is so much in this book. There is ultimate sacrifice. Not one ounce of selflessness in Vi when you makes the biggest sacrifice anyone could ever make for love. There is extreme love that you can feel as soon as these two meet each other until the very end. Just so many emotions that send you on a rollercoaster ride that you dont want to get off.
An absolute must read . I loved it and highly recommend reading it. But be warned yes this one does leave you hanging. Be prepared to want to immediately grab the next one to see what happens

4.5 stars for - Before The Lie - the first book in the Confession Duet by KD Robichaux. This is the sweet story of two polar opposites falling in love at first sight. I read this book cover to cover in one sitting and positively enjoyed every second of it. The only thing I hated was the dreaded cliff hanger ending, but since I went in knowing this was a duet I can and will keep my complaining to a minimum.
Vivian (Vi) Brown was never part of the "in crowd" being quiet and shy she chose to avoid conflict instead of engage it. Growing up she participated in all the activities like dance and sports, but never really found her niche until years later when as a freshman in high school she learned about indoor rock climbing. Vi quickly excelled at climbing and it became something she did everyday for hours at a time. Four years down the road a few months before her graduation two guys walked in to Rock On - the rock wall facility where she is a member - and she is asked to show them the ropes- literally. Vi has an instant attraction to one of these guys, but being the shy awkward person that she is, she knows that it won't go anywhere. What Vi didn't realize though is that what she lacks in the confidence department, Corbin more than makes up for with his determination...
Corbin Lowe is a twenty-year-old Army specialist from California where he grew up living with his mom until he started running with the wrong crowd and had to go to the Army to get out of trouble. Corbin turned his whole life around and became a stand up guy and leader to other soldiers even moving up in the ranks. The day he and one of his cadets walked in to Rock On he was instantly attracted to Vi, but she looked so young and innocent he needed to be sure exactly what he was getting into first. The minute Corbin found out Vi was eighteen he knew that she was his future and he set about making that a reality.
This was a sweet telling of how Vi and Corbin fell in love with lots of laughter and a bit of spice. From the epilogue to the final word I was anxiously awaiting what would happen next. I have a sneaking suspicion book two is going to be even better :)

5 Soulmate Stars!!! Entertaining and don’t get me started on that ending!

I was hooked the second I started reading this book! I fell in love with the whole Soulmates storyline. And don’t get me started on Corbin and Vi. While her story doesn’t exactly start out with roses and sunshine, the story builds from there and restores your hope. If you aren’t a fan of cliffhangers then I suggest you step away, because this book will leave you gasping… Overall a great read and I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
