Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Robert Jordan was the pen name of James Oliver Rigney, Jr., under which he was best known as the author of the bestselling The Wheel of Time fantasy series. He also wrote under the names Reagan O'Neal and Jackson O'Reilly.

Jordan was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He served two tours in Vietnam (from 1968 to 1970) with the United States Army as a helicopter gunner. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with "V" and bronze oak leaf cluster, and two Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses with palm. After returning from Vietnam he attended The Citadel where he received an undergraduate degree in physics. After graduating he was employed by the United States Navy as a nuclear engineer. He began writing in 1977. He was a history buff and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, poker, chess, pool, and pipe collecting.

He described himself as a "High Church" Episcopalian and received communion more than once a week. He lived with his wife Harriet McDougal, who works as a book editor (currently with Tor Books; she was also Jordan's editor) in a house built in 1797.

Responding to queries on the similarity of some of the concepts in his Wheel of Time books with Freemasonry concepts, Jordan admitted that he was a Freemason. However, "like his father and grandfather," he preferred not to advertise, possibly because of the negative propaganda against Freemasonry. In his own words, "no man in this country should feel in danger because of his beliefs."

On March 23, 2006, Jordan disclosed in a statement that he had been diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis, and that with treatment, his median life expectancy was four years, though he said he intended to beat the statistics. He later posted on his Dragonmount blog to encourage his fans not to worry about him and that he intended to have a long and fully creative life.

He began chemotherapy treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in early April 2006. Jordan was enrolled in a study using the drug Revlimid just approved for multiple myeloma but not yet tested on primary amyloidosis.

Jordan died at approximately 2:45 p.m. EDT on September 16, 2007, and a funeral service was held for him on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Jordan was cremated and his ashes buried in the churchyard of St. James Church in Goose Creek, outside Charleston.

Loved "Eye of the World" and I’m sorry I didn’t read it sooner. Present day authors get so distracted in what the internet says they can and can’t do that their writings become tediously ridiculous. Jordan just tells the story and does it well. Fast paced and colorful, the story drew me and held me there. On to #2!

A note about “The Great Hunt.” The book is very different from the first. Where EOTW moved the plot forward, TGH spends a mind-numbing number of chapters covering a couple of days in one place with women gabbing over a lot of “as you know, Bob” backstory. Where EOTW was comma sparse, TGH makes up for it with MANY, MANY commas in all the wrong places including comma splices. It’s making my inner grammar nerd scream. TGH also reads like it was written by a high school girl. Don’t get me wrong . . . I was once a high school girl and remain a girl to this day. But what man describes a mouth as “rosebud lips.” What young man, worried about his fate, notes the snowdrops on pearl centers decorating a gown? If this kind of prose was in EOTW, I missed it. From others’ reviews, it looks like I’m in store for many more chapters of eye-rolling before the story finally picks up. Sigh.

Enjoy a most excellent series

I am rereading the entire series and understand better now than I did before. This series continues to be an excellent one. I look forward to rereading the other ten books. A watered down version of the first two books is available on Prime as an episodic movie. It is enough to whet your appetite for the books if you have never read them or make you want to reread them. The series is full of adventure, magic, hope, emotional moments and is good vs evil. The characters will pull you into the excellent storyline and you will have a hard time putting any of the books down. Also, be aware that book 5 in this series is a prequel to the first book.

Wheel of Time is a pretty good read, but once you get into later books it gets confusing. I am currently reading series for third time because I have been watching Amazon series which makes me cringe quite a bit, but if you never read the books and can forgive some of the woke tampering is not too bad. You really have to read WOT several times to enjoy the full series. There are so many characters and so many plot lines it is hard to follow unless you already are familiar with the story. This is also true with Gardens of the Moon and the Gene Wolf books. For me it is not like LOTR that has a less complicated plot line, but WOT is still one of the better series if you read for pleasure and are trying to stay away from YouTube.

“The Wheel of Time,” series asks what if Frodo fought destiny? What if the Chosen One wanted to choose his own path?

There are a lot of similarities with the, “Lord of the Rings,” series. But if you’re a fantasy fan, you have to read both classics. Despite their similarities, the questions they ask are different, the way women are portrayed is different, and the cultures they draw on are different.

Book 1 and book 3 remain top favorites.
Book 2 has some of the hardest to read, awful experiences, but also one truly epic piece of dark fantasy writing.

I re-read the whole series last year.
I'm now determined to take (at least) a 5-year break from it.

Robert Jordan is what I called one of the greats. he was the author that the authors inspired me to write. I own all of his books. I idolized this man. His work takes me to places I want to visit his characters I can easily relate to. I have read his works over and over again.

Wild ride

The books were very interesting but the story did not flow and it was a little slow.
It jumped from one to another without connecting the two stories.

Hard to listen to on audiobook. Super long book so I don’t know exactly how many of these it went through but not exactly memorable.
