Fear University #2

The Killing Season

Rate this book
In the far Alaskan north, there are places the winter sun cannot reach. Places where light won't shine for months. These are the places we hunt the monsters who feed on fear. So begins the Killing Season. For the next sixty-five days, we will face the darkness. Some will hunt the aswangs in the ever night, but I, Ollie Andrews, am here for one purpose: to search for answers to my past. They told us to fear the arctic tundra and the monsters hiding in the deep, dark shadows. But, locked inside a base known for driving even the best hunters mad, I fear it's not the outside we should worry about, but the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves. The real monsters are within. When a brutal murder brings with it the secrets of Fear University-and the threat of an unknown killer on the loose-we all must fight to stay alive. But with madness and paranoia setting in during a whiteout snowstorm, all we can do is hope we don't destroy ourselves before the sun finally rises again. Because no matter how hard we fight, reality will always threaten to tear us apart. And when faced with the most terrible of truths, even the strongest break.

... and the wait is over.. She's back. The the killer, the warrior, the girl who felt no pain, the monster within.

Ollie Andrews is back. And things get shadier and shadier now that Ollie finally learns about her true nature. She and Luke are sent to Barrow, along with other hunters, including Sunny and Hatter and Thad. Luke's menacing father Killian Aultstriver wants Ollie to investigate the mole in their group. But what she discovers is far more complicated than she ever thought.

And the conspiracies are getting really scarier than ever. The truth about Ollie's mom and dad. The truth about Killian and Dean. The truth about Thad and Coldcrow. And the reality that Luke must face.

Sunny and Hatter are also back - oh I love this pair. The little dictator and the cunning hunter. I love how Hatter gets so worried about Sunny. She brings out the romantic side of him. And I love how Sunny's really protective of Ollie even after she learns the truth about her friend. That made me like Sunny even more.

I can't really express the emotions I felt in this book. I was giddy when Luke declared his feelings, I was mad at Coldcrow, I was shocked by Thad's confession, I was mesmerized by Hatter and Sunny and I felt too much anger at Max and Killian. I want to kill them. I want them to die. Ugh!

I immensely love this series and the sheer awesomeness of Meg Collett. I can't wait to get my hands on the third book. I'm broken until I see Ollie again!

In Fear University, readers are introduced to the aswang, a day-walker and evil shape-shifter that is a cross between a vampire, werewolf, ghoul and a witch. In Killing Season, the Kapre is mentioned - a tree demon that holds a large cigar, intent on scaring wanderers until they get lost. I wonder if the "manananggals" would appear soon. Meg?

An absolutely twisted crazy thrill ride that left me breathless till the very end. It was unpredictable, exciting, wild, and heart-pounding. This book with play with your emotions taking you from one high to the next. There was so much mystery and suspense just when you think you know something that author throws a switch and you find you really knew nothing at all.
The characters were fabulous! The addition ones each had a voice of their own and I never knew what to expect.
This series is an original, emotional, and excitingly twisted story I can't wait for more!

I am thoroughly enjoying this series, even if this book broke my heart a little and was also a bit darker than I would normally read. The ending is going to make you want to jump right into book three immediately, but I am reading something different between the two just to clear my mind.

Book two is told from both Ollie's POV and Sunny's POV which is nice, Sunny is really growing as a character as are some of the others.

Great continuation of this story! It was exciting, sexy, thrilling. It introduced new characters and the plot became more complex as the story unfolded. I can't wait to start the third installment. Great shifter story with romance, family relationships, action and drama. It has it all.

This book is one of those rare and precious gems that grabs hold of you right from the very beginning and never lets go. I was sucked in to the story, holding my breath, gasping out loud and at times quite literally turning my knuckles white with how tightly I was gripping my kindle. Meg has a unique talent of making me not want to eat, go to work or even sleep because I just want to read until the very end and not do anything else! The book hangover I have now is blissfully painful beyond words.
The action takes us from Fear University into the dangerous wilderness of Barrow, the 'swangs territory. The dangers come thick and fast but you're not always sure who exactly the enemy is. Twists, turns and heart stopping situations are the norm and set your pulse racing like crazy. I loved the progression of Ollie and Luke's relationship as well as the bulking out of Sunny's character. Hatter is once again incredibly interesting and lovable and I just wanted to reach into the pages and give him a big squishy hug.
I won't give away the ending, suffice to say, I don't know if my heart/nerves can take the wait for book three! Meg Collett, I bow to your writing royalty. As always, you rock my world!

I have said it once and I will say it again, the more Meg Collett writes the better it gets!! If the first in this series didn't get you this 2nd installment will!! Ollie, Luke, Sunny, Hatter and Thad are sent to Barrow, the outpost that Luke's father runs. With Ollie recovering from trials, shes suppose to take it easy. But Killian, Luke's dad, has other plans. While the others are out hunting, he wants her to find out who is double crossing the hunters. But while searching, questions come up about who her mother might be. After one of the hunters is murdered, Ollie has an idea of who did it, but they are doing a great job of covering up. Surrounded by danger of the 'swang, the greenhouse full of wolf's bane, and someone killing others, Ollie tries to protect the ones shes loves...until her worst nightmare comes to light!!!!

Meg has done it again! A fantastic sequel! Caution: This book definitely has intense scenes and may trigger emotions and thoughts. For mature/older readers only! I am impressed with Meg's work that I am going to read her other work as well, not just the Fear University series.

The second book in the Fear University series was just as good as the first one. This one was told from the point of view of Sunny as well as Ollie and it was good to have a different view. Sunny is one of my favorite characters and there were several times she had me laughing just because of how she talks. In the world of people who curse like sailors, it was refreshing to hear an adult that tried her best not to drop f-bombs like crazy. The only thing I didn't care for was the ending, which made me go "Are you kidding me?!" Still, it was another fun read and I'll be adding these to my physical library at some point.

A must-read series for all lovers of paranormal romance!

Be prepared for a wild and horrifying ride, because the story waits for no one in this installment of Fear University. There's not a single wasted moment in this book. The reader is barely given a chance to absorb one twist before another is upon them. Highly recommended.

**kind of a spoiler but not really a spoiler if that makes sense**

Um yeah WOW. I don't know where to begin with this review other than to say "read this book" The Killing Season is the 2nd in the series and it was just as addictive as the first. The twists and turns and wondering who to trust kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page and the ending, wow what a ending. It's a cliffhanger of sorts but not one where you want to throw your kindled cross the room.

It was great to be reunited with Ollie and Luke and Hatter and Sunny (these two are my fav) I think I love Sunny even more in this one, she is quite the character and ohh so loveable and fierce, she really showed everyone who she is in the one. Hatter is hatter and I can't wait to see more of him. The chemistry between Luke and Ollie is just as explosive. Their journey in the next one will be very interesting

I cannot wait for the next instalment

I didn't think it was possible but this series gets better! Meg has knocked it right out of the park again. The writing, the storyline, the characters and their relationships; all brilliant and well thought out.
I went through a range of emotions and didn't know if I was coming or going! This book is packed full of twists and turns and had me questioning my loyalty, I didn't know who to trust from one minute to the next. And I LOVED it! I especially love Sunny and how her character is progressing; she has become one tough cookie and has so much more confidence. She is a ray of sunshine and I love how she is a loyal and loving friend to Ollie.
The Killing Season is the second book in the series, and if you haven't read Fear University I urge you to do so immediately. And then read TKS straight after!
Five awesome stars from me, thanks again Meg!!

Meg is killing me with these cliffhangers! I need more! This book was insane. So much action. I would have liked to see some swangs, but I understand why there wasn't anything. Sunny & Hatter are swiftly becoming my favorite characters. DON'T trust anyone! I was expecting the leak to be anyone. I will admit that I thought Killian would turn out to be a sort of anti hero, but boy was I wrong. Also Luke is a big baby. I am 100% team Thad! Ollie could learn a lot from him & really grow as a character. I hope they get together and also lead a revolution into a new world of peaceful co existence. I feel Luke & Ollies relationship is a dead end. They might love each other, but it doesn't feel like that is enough for either of them.

Wow, outstanding! This book picks up where Fear University left off and takes you on a wild ride! My only complaint? It ended - and I need to know what happens next! :) This book focuses on Ollie and Sunny while they're trapped in Northern Alaska throughout the Killing Season. Ollie is as determined as ever to find out the secrets to her past, but who can she trust?
This book picks you up, shakes you, turns you on, freaks you out, shakes you some more and leaves you screaming for the next one. I've fallen even more in love with Luke, I love Hatter, Sunny's strength in this installment is inspiring and how can you not love Ollie? By the end, I love her even more.
I can't wait to read the next book! Keep writing Meg!! <3

Edge of your seat!

This book was SO action packed! I had to keep putting it down to take a breather! I love the first book and really wasn't sure where book two was going to lead. I'm very happy to say that book two was even better.
Ollie is even stronger than I imagined her to be, I loved seeing how well she deals with everything that gets thrown at her. Sunny is what I would love to have in a best friend. She is so loving and kind.
The writing is just amazing and sucks you in from page one. Meg Collett has quickly become a one click for me. She is an author to watch, she's going to have the next Hollywood movie deal!

Wow. Wow. WOW! This book just blew me away! I will admit that I was sceptical about how Meg was going to make The Killing Season as good as Fear University.... I'm telling you now, I was sorely mistaken! Not only is The Killing Season as good as Fear University..... it's BETTER! In this book, everything is more shaped and defined. Meg just continues to grow and become better and better with each book! I swear I felt like I was in Barrow, Alaska and I could feel the cold each time the doors opened for the hunters! Sunny really stood out to me and I loved getting to know and understand her better. I can't write enough good things about The Killing Season! I think this book deserves 10 stars!

As usual Meg does not disappoint on this sequel. It gets better and better and I can't honestly wait to find out what happens next. You thought you knew what's going to happen next but there's a twist on every corner! I didn't expect Coldcrow's character to be as such but then again after what's been revealed I guess I'm not surprised and didn't feel bad for him at all. My heart aches for Ollie and I hope that in the end she would be the same feisty woman I grew to love. Luke needs to get his shit together so he can do what he needs to do and I hope that this will have a HEA. Sigh... I want the 3rd book now!!! LOL.

Special thanks to Meg for getting me hooked once again ;).

I didn't think she could top Fear University, man was I wrong!

The Killing Season answered questions yet gave us so many new ones!! ~Warning~I would not read this book near a sleeping child or pet.. you will scream out loud a few times.
I really liked Luke in FU but now I'm in love! Hatter has grown on me and I have a feeling that we will be seeing a lot more of him and Sunny in the next book.

Meg Collett has a very vivid imagination and I thank her each day that she shares it with us.

Meg Collett brings you into a world of Ollie, Luke, Hatter and Sunny. Full of hate, greed and adventure. I didn't think it could get better. But it keeps getting better and better.
Ollie is trying to figure out where she came from while trying to keep her love for Luke under cover. In this book you get the perspective from Ollie and Sunny. I love how Meg brought you into the view from Sunny. I don't like to give much away in book reviews but you are in for a wild ride with this book. It's a definite must read. I can't wait for more.

Holy crap! This series just keeps getting better and better! This book is the second in the series so far and takes you on a thrill ride of twists, turns, and cliffs. It takes you to the brink of everything, moving you to feel everything in the story. You find yourself holding your breath, letting out a breath you didn't know you were holding, and screaming and cheering.

I can't wait to see what the next book has in store for us!!! Awesome job Meg!!!

Well this 3 book trilogy turned out to be so incredibly unique. I loved that the heroine was a bad ass but it somehow never seemed over the top. The writing style was great. The Filipino legend made for a really creative storyline. I don’t feel that the series title gave it any justice. Fear university just sounds lame, and that was not the case with any of these books. I will definitely check out more of this writers work in the future.

This. Was. Awesome!!! God who do you trust? WTF is going on? So many twists and turns I didn't know what was going to happen. And the touching moments between Luke and Ollie were really just fantastic. The last 20% of the book had me barely breathing. And what a cliffy, can't wait to start Monster Mine.

I don't have a lot to say about this book. On the one hand I really liked the plot, on the other...the characters and their actions are so twisted. For the last probably 30% of the book I just held a grimace.

So, this is tough. While I do want to see what happens I'm not sure I'm up for the content.

The Killing Season is another heart-pounding story by Meg Collett. This series reminds me a little of the Razorland and Sirantha Jax books by Ann Aguirre. Not the storyline, but these books have the same dark, gritty feel. You never know what to expect because no character is safe. I'm on the edge of my seat just waiting for the other shoe to drop. This particular book does a nice job advancing the story, but there is still a lot learn about the characters and where they are going.

The narrative moves from the University to a aswang refuge in Anchorage, Alaska. Ollie shifts from being in a place of strength and nurturing to this new stark and dark reality. She is weakened by her past encounters and now placed in a place where, literally, the sun barely shines. She is bombarded by her discoveries and still hunted by both the aswangs and the university. Her relationship with Luke is still uncertain and she bears a lot burdens throughout this story. Dang, this girl needs a break! And yet, this story is so compelling and I had trouble putting the book down.

If you are a fan of dark, dystopian reads in the family of books like Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre and The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins , you will definitely want to pick up this series.

Alright, where to begin for installment 2 of FU. This will be cryptic; I don't go much into tell all reviews because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. But this is book 2, not 1 so if you didn't read it bugger off and go read it, dumbass. I'm spilling blood on the first, so this is your last warning.

This one has more deception, more secrets, more of our favorite monster, Ollie. But hold up guess who just entered our elite mix... YES, we have some Sunshine in all her sexy nerdy glory!

Dual Pov with a Sexy Badass Monster and a Sexy Nerdy Seductress...
description

This is what it's like for Ollie to be without Sunny. For us to be without Sunny.
description
That's right ladies and gents, no Sunny is like a never ending darkness in an already darkened place.

There is a lot of growth in this book. Stronger bonds are made within our group. Our hearts became full only to have them break. The worst part, it's not even the aswangs that fully do it. No, it's humanity at its finest. It's actually crazy when you realize Ollie is a version of all of her antagonist in each book underneath it all. If you don't see it, you need to reread. There's one example in my review of book 3.

In book one, we read on as Ollie discovers that she truly is a monster. Her father, Hex, is an aswang pack leader. The puzzle pieces slowly slipping into place. The wheels spinning in her head as to whether Douchebag Dean knows her secret. She tries to hide it, tried to alienate those closest to her in order to disappear. She thought she could live with them hating her but not with them thinking she was a monster, the enemy they want to annihilate. Douchebag Dean's field test was horrible. That's stating it lightly. A fight to the death cage match between Ollie and Sunny and I assume a not that drugged, aswang. Both barely made it out with their lives. If you haven't caught on, I really hate Douchebag Dean and will be so extremely happy when Ollie finally slits his throat - too violent, whoops, my bad. After all the trials and bs he's put Ollie and Sunny through he deserves it and then some for his latest jab sending them to the Barrow. Please, don't go soft on me now. Dean needs to die.

He has made Ollie and Sunny go to the Barrow to hunt for aswang with Luke, Hatter, and Thad. Did I mention Daddy-o Killion is there and it's his home? Well, it is. Due to the season, it's complete darkness and aswang mating season. Killian is determined to make everyone bend to his will. Now, granted Ollie and Sunny aren't hunting but the stakes are just as high if not higher when a killer decides to run amuck. Secrets Ollie needs from her past to find out who she is at her fingertips but the cost is greater than she could have ever imagined. Her demon that hides in the shadows, her former foster brother, Max, is hot on her trail thanks to an insider.

Just remember Ollie- What binds you, just might break you. Stay strong. .

And thank you to all that is holy.

Sunshine's balls official dropped in this book. Her tiger roared quite a few times, actually. So Proud! I don't think there is a line she will draw when it comes to protecting Ollie, Hatter, or even Luke, for that matter. Her unconditional love is amazing. She shows no fear when Ollie tells her the truth, only love, and support. She's out to help no matter what.

Sunny and Hatter get closer in this book. In case you haven't noticed, I flove them together.
description
description
Yes, they are my Cloud and Aerith. If you're a Tifa fan, kindly f-off.

Hatter's reaction to the aswangs saliva really shows you how f'ed up he is because of his parents. It's heartbreaking and gut-wrenching to watch, let alone for Sunny to have to experience it first hand. Sunny is determined to fix him, to protect what has always been hers. Luke's promise is pretty grim.

And now we have Ollie and Luke...
description
Or is it? A love where lies still divide. If the truth comes to light, will our monster still have her shield in her darkest hour to come?
description
And, yes, I'm comparing them to Kirito and Asuna. Hello, badass power couple.

Luke, Luke, Luke,
description

Luke loves Ollie, and she, him. But can they withstand the hands of time? The time it takes to make a person? The time it takes to break a person? We're crossing our fingers for you there, bud.

As far as Daddy-o goes there Luke-

Last but not least our beautifully fierce Ollie girl.

This book in one sentence: Ollie spends winter break locked in isolated bunker with Sunny, Hatter, Luke, and Luke's disturbing family and a bunch of hunters; also one of them is a murderer.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Steaminess: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Would I recommend: Yes. I really liked the direction this book took. It was definitely a horror story. I couldn't put it down. There were supernatural monsters, but the human monsters were much more disturbing. It was a good progression of the series. The setting was different enough from book 1, but the characters and story were consistent, so it didn't feel like too big of a departure. I loved the addition of Sunny's POV for certain chapters. She's a great character and she really balances out Ollie. Switching between both characters made the story more engaging, with a better pace.
Tropes: There were a few horror tropes, but they worked really well.
Content warnings: Stalking. Rape. Torture. Child abuse. Agressive consensual sex. This book isn't for the squeamish, there are some pretty dark parts.
