Finding My Forever #1

Everything In Between

Rate this book
Oh God, here he comes now. Okay, he actually greeted me. Now I need to say something… anything. Run down my internal checklist—Step One: wipe drool from mouth; I wiped my mouth; check. Step Two: open mouth and speak; say something… come on, anything… nope, I got nothing. Step Three: refer to Step One and repeat.

Sigh. This gorgeous man now thinks I’m a moron.

Of course, I know that my secret—okay, not so secret—crush, Reese Willoughby, could never have any interest in me anyway. There’s just no way that he hasn’t noticed me openly ogling him at work. I know everyone else in the office has surely seen it.

When Reese finally asks for my help with a work project, I can’t help but feel over the moon. Now I can only hope that he notices just how much I like him, because there is no way I’m about to make the first move.

***Everything In Between is the first book in the series Finding My Forever, but is a standalone novel. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but the couples will show up throughout the series. It is approximately 100,000 words and a contemporary romance between two men with explicit language and graphic sex intended for Adults Only.***

***Please beware that there is mention of child abuse that could be a trigger for some people.***

Michele Notaro

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

Hoooo boy...

Loc. 319: It's 'conceded', not 'conceited'.

Loc. 352: It's 'ciao', not 'choi'.

Loc. 564: "Elyse was our little sister." Yes. We already knew that because it had already been stated.

Loc. 589: "Elyse, our little sister..." Uh huh....

Loc. 719: "...yes, I know exactly how far away he sits from me..." I would hope so since you've worked together for four years.

Loc. 999: Caleb is admonishing his friend to keep her mouth shut about Reese's sexuality because they can't be sure how "out" Reese is...seeing as how Reese has asked Caleb to be his date to a family wedding, my guess would be he's comfortably out.

Loc. 2881: "She threw her arms around my neck and pulled me down so hard I had to let go of Reese, she hugged me close, "Hi, sweetie..." Periods exist for a reason.

Location 2891: "Come on in boys." (EW! Commas exist for a reason, too!) "Dad's outback." Dad's outback...what? Are they talking about a Subaru?

Loc. 2902: "...backdoor..." That's two words.

Loc. 3013: "...outback..." That's also two words. Again.

Loc. 3284: "...the grunt of the injuries..." *laughing*

Loc. 3308: (Discussing Caleb's abuse at the hands of his father and brother): "Didn't any of your teachers do anything? Or Mrs. Ann and Mr. Derek?" "They tried. They didn't have any real evidence because they weren't allowed to look at my medical records."

*Deep breath*

I'm getting real sick and goddamn tired of authors who want to tackle the subject of abuse, but can't be bothered to do a single lick of research on the subject. One does not need "evidence" to report suspected child abuse. That's why it's "suspected" child abuse. That's why all states have mandatory reporters. Anyone who works closely with children is required by law to report suspected child abuse, and those suspicions are then investigated by law enforcement. Not having evidence or access to a child's medical records is completely and totally irrelevant. Caleb mentioned his father taking him to different clinics so his records were spread around and so, presumably, no one could notice a pattern. The problem with that excuse is that Notaro made Caleb's abuse especially heinous. I'm willing to bet that a young child showing up with symbols carved into his skin would raise some goddamn suspicion, regardless of whether or not he'd been to that particular clinic before.

Loc. 3872: "He had a taste that was strictly his own..." Who else's would it be?

Loc. 4710: Caleb's brother, Rubin, assaults him and is arrested by the police because Caleb is trying to get Rubin's kids from him...Rubin is arrested and Caleb tells his friend Dec to take him to the hospital because, "I think I just got the evidence we need to get Jacob away from Rubin..."

There are so many things wrong with this, I don't even know where to fucking begin. They're already locked in a legal battle over the kids, Rubin is already being investigated for abuse...the police, on occasion, do communicate with each other, so the report of Rubin's assault on Caleb and the subsequent arrest would make its way through the proper channels to reach whomever was handling the abuse claims.

Just GAH.

To top it off, Caleb refuses to go to the hospital to get looked at in favor of going to the police station, despite the fact that a fucking medical report would go into the investigative file for the custody case!

*Sigh*

Loc. 4714: "I filed a police report, took pictures and called social services..." Just fucking shoot me.

Too many locations to count: Caleb's drooling problem is obnoxious as hell. We get that he finds Reese drool-worthy, but the idea that he's literally drooling every time he lays eyes on the guy is just dumb.

Yes, there is such a thing as too much sugar.

description

This started off pretty great. Caleb has a crush on a colleague and seems to drool every time Reese walks by. Reese seems to stutter himself whenever he tries to talk to Caleb. So far, this was pretty cute. The guys were both a bit shy, and it was clear from the start they were really into each other.

Caleb comes from a big, pretty weird family. He was adopted when he was 14, because his biological father kicked him out of the house, after his brother beat him, when they found out he was kissing a boy.

He was adopted by the family of the boy he was kissing. The kiss never lead to anything more, but Caleb did have a new family.

The rest of the book was extremely sweet, and sugary. Caleb and Reese go on dates, they meet the family, they have crazy friends and meddling siblings. A pretty good formula to keep me entertained.

But all of this happened pretty early in the book. These guys are in a new, but solid relationship by the time I hit 30%. The family antics and hot sex kept me intrigued til about 60%. By that time I was wondering what else could possibly happen, since it still wasn’t finished.

And that’s where the author took a wrong turn, straight into lala land.

description

Suddenly Caleb gets a call from the police station that he apparently has an 11 year old nephew, who Caleb’s biological brother kicked out of the house. Of course Caleb and Reese go rescue the boy, Sammy, take him in, find out he has a little 6 year old brother, take him in too, adopt the two and become instant parents.

I don’t proclaim to be an expert when it comes to kids, but I do have 3 sons. My eldest is 10, and he has a lot of 10 and 11 year old friends, so I kind of know how an 11 year normally acts. Saying things like: ‘I got kicked out, because I am queer’ is so not what an 11 year old would say. I get that some guys know from an early age that they are gay, but I this kid acted more like 13 or 14. 11 is still pretty young.

And the 6 year old acted more like a 4 year old. I doubt a kid who grew up in an abusive home like Jacob did, would be as happy as he was, and so accepting of his new home and his new ‘daddies’. He even called them both Daddy after only 2 weeks. That is not a thing that would ever happen. Especially to kids with some kind of trauma. (I hate that the general consensus in a lot of books is that if you love a foster kid enough, all their problems and angry behavior goes away. It doesn’t. Having a traumatized kid is hard work! These kids are often angry and lash out. Most of them are not quiet kids who are ready to be healed with hugs.)

When I got the last couple of pages I knew that the author wouldn’t be happy without a proposal to top this all off, and of course I was right.

It was just too much. Like the author took an extra happy pill after the first 60%.

description

There were still parts I really liked. I liked the first half a lot and the cheesiness didn’t bother me all that much. But the second half was too insane for me. There was also some mix up with the past tense and present tense, so that was confusing.

And can I just say what an AWFUL nickname Leb is for Caleb. Everyone called him Leb. Ugh.

I loved every second of Caleb and Reese's story. They were truly soulmates and you could feel it coming from the pages. I loved all of the secondary characters as well and can't wait for their stories. It's unusual that I love both MCs equally but that was the case here. The writing drew you in and made you feel like a part of this awesome family. And their mom, damn she made me lol so many times. This author is new to me but she gained a dedicated fan with this story. It's low on angst and filled with a mature, respectful and unwavering love.

If you are looking for a super sweet, low angst book then look no further. This book is surely that. I love books like this from time to time where there's no real relationship drama, just two people meeting, falling in love and then becoming a family. I laughed and cried and even wanted to punch someone a time or two.

For a debut novel, it was well written and even though there wasn't much drama, it kept me interested. I was totally invested in these characters...like I was one of the family. Speaking of family, I absolutely ADORED Caleb's family. I want to be his mom when I grow up! They were all truly awesome. And OMG when Jacob said "Daddy" I literally balled like a baby. It was so damn sweet.

Reese was amazing and so good to Caleb. I do wish we could have had his POV though, if even just one chapter. But it really wasn't needed. Everything he said and did proved his love for Caleb.

There's some tough times in the prologue that had me cringing and crying. I can't stand to even THINK about children being abused and it really hurt me. But thankfully, Caleb gets a new awesome family and grows up to be a great guy who meets his soulmate.

So, if you want something easy peasy and sweet to make you feel a part of a family, then I highly recommend reading this book. I'm looking forward to future books by this author.

What an incredibly emotional, sweet, hopeful read. I absolutely adored this story and it's this author's debut album? That's hard to believe, it was almost perfect... I'll get to the almost in a minute, but let's talk about why it just was....

This story is told in Caleb's POV. He was horribly tortured and abused by his brother and father until he was 14 and adopted by his best friend and their family. There is quite a bit of child abuse that could be triggering, a little in the beginning, a little explaning and then a little towards the end... so, just a warning... It isn't terrible (I mean, all child abuse is terrible), but it wasn't anything that took away from the book. It just made you hurt for those involved. So, cut to, years later when Caleb is grown and working at an ad agency with the guy he's had a crush on for the last 4 years, Reese. Everyone has a crush on Reese, though Caleb is so adorably cute with his crushing. His internal dialogue is so funny at times that I'd go from tearing up to laughing.

Reese, has also had a crush on Caleb and finally gets the nerve to ask him out once Caleb gets his brother to help out Reese. You'll find Caleb's entire family, pretty dang hilarioud. I loved all the secondary characters; Caleb's adopted parents, mainly his mother, is a nut case-in the best possible way. His adopted family is so supportive and loving and understanding and I loved them all so much. His brothers are his best friends and they treat each other like siblings, not adopted or otherwise. I loved that too.
I loved Reese's bestie, Declan, even though I was sure he was going to be a problem.... He wasn't and he quickly turned into a big part of the family.
I was so happy that they included Harley and I cannot wait for his story next. I have a feeling, his too, will be a heartbreaking one.

So, Caleb and Reese are happy and together and everything seems to happen exactly how it's supposed to. There isn't any big angst or trouble... just them growing in their relationship, happy and healthy and in love.....Its such a sweet love story, they're perfect for each other and it shows in everything they do.

Then, something terrible happens and Caleb finds out that he not only has one half brother from his abusive brother, but he has two.... 11 year old Sammy and 6 year old Jacob.... Caleb knows exactly what kind of person his brother is and judging by the looks of his siblings, he knows that they've had a similar life that he had when he lived with him...Thank goodness for small favors, his abusive dad was dead so at least we didn't have to deal with him....
I loved the part that they took in these kids' lives. I loved how honestly the feelings and the trust was portrayed. It felt real to the story and it showed the good, bad and the ugly. I was glad they all got to a happy, healthy place at the end. Those kids deserved the best life and I knew that Caleb and Reese could give it to them... not only that they could, but they honestly wanted to. They loved them.

The only part I didn't like, was that we didn't get any karmatic justice with the abusive brother/dad to the kids. He deserved a fate so terrible that it all made us feel better for those kids, no matter fictional, had to endure it. I wish he would have went to prison for the rest of his life, or gotten his teeth kicked in, or something that'd give us the satisfaction of knowing he lost his kids to his queer brother and they were all happy and together. Ughhhh, I can't stand when a bad guy gets away with being a bad guy, and even though he didn't in the long run.... he still kind of did because I wanted a fate worse than death for him.
I should probably keep an eye on that, cuz it's a little crazy but still lol
I hated the abusive brother....

Overall, this was such a beautiful, heartbreaking yet hopeful, wonderful read and I am so very much looking forward to the next one!
5 well deserved stars from me!

I Completely, totally loved this book. LOVED IT. From the first few pages it just pulls you in. Great story line and the characters were all perfectly tied in together. The author did a great job on this book (especially for being a first book) and I cannot wait for the next one in this series. I will definitely be on the lookout for other books by this author.

Update to review:

It literally doesn't matter how many times I read this book. I am still completely In Love with Caleb and Reese. Idk what it is about this book but I am fully enamored and obsessed. I don't think I will ever get sick of reading this book. The only thing that would make this better is if we had an awesome audio version to go along with my eBook and Paperback. LOL. Seriously this is one of my absolute favorite books.

Bien escrito, MC guapos y encantadores, secundarios majísimos, poco sufrimiento y happy ending

Gosh, this book is EXTREMELY sweet!! I enjoyed it , is really cute reading BUT I think is too much!

In some parts the main couple were a bit annoying ~ they are the typical couple that are kissing and cuddling in from of a group of single friends . Yay ! We all hate those xD!

I decided to read this because I really wanted to read the second one :P
I hope having more lucky there!

Bad writing, bad dialogue. I couldn't finish it.

The prologue of this book started very strong, but the author quickly crashes and burns with the messy dialogue and unrealistic sequence of events. The characters are under developed and have no real substance, and quickly fall into a routine.

The development of the romance between the two characters is also pretty unrealistic. And, it's difficult to believe that adults would carry on this way at work without getting severely reprimanded or terminated. The author doesn't help ease this concern because at one point, the characters are worried about getting in trouble for being late (yet they have no problem calling each other b**** and dropping f bombs in the office).

As I read the writing style and dialogue, I kept thinking that a teenager had written this. Around chapter 6, I had enough so I jumped to the end to see if it improved. It doesn't and has a very unrealistic ending and development of a relationship.

The author shows some potential, but needs to develop her characters more, learn how gay men interact, (hint: we all don't walk around high fiving each other nor do we all change our hair color every week) and also needs to learn how to write dialogue that isn't vapid and unrealistic.

I couldn't finish this novel and won't be reading any others in the series.

I thought this was a sweet book of two guys falling in love. I really liked both Caleb and Reese from the beginning. Caleb's family is straight up nuts, especially his mom but in a good way, lol. She has no filter. I'm excited to read the next book in the series. This was a new author to me so I love when I'm pleasantly surprised when I first read their work. I can be leery of new authors sometimes, you take a chance when you first read them, glad I did with this author ;-)

I'm usually down for sugary sweet reads, but I feel like this one gave me cavities. I doubt this would have been a problem had the book's length been shorter. The sugarfest stretched on for way too long and I found myself skipping a great chunk of it after the halfway mark. Nothing really happens until the last bit of family drama near the end anyway.

So low drama, just pure goodness and sweetness. I had the biggest smile on my face most of the book.

I loved Caleb and Reese, they are so good to each other, and deal with anything that arises with maturity and kindness. I loved that this wasn't a book where people lash out and say hurtful things in the moment but are willing to admit their wrong doings, and move forward in love.

The cast of side characters is amazing too. I can't wait for their stories. I love that Harley, Levi and Declan are going to be with new people ( from synopsis of the other books ) I can't get over calebs parents. They are such amazing goofy fun humans. It's the kind of relationship I want to have with my husband and children in the future and now. It's beautiful.

I can't say enough good things about this book.

This book is OK until you hit like the 65% mark and then all hell breaks loose in a weird confusing way.
This starts off as a sweet sugary story about two guys who work together and have crushes on each other and finally hook up and start dating. I mean really promising. Once they start dating everything is going well and really the book could have just ended with a HEA at that point. I could have been a really sweet no conflict love story, but NOOOOOOO we just had to pack in every single thing that can happen in a lifetime into a couple of weeks. There's kids and living together and just so much crap and of course the proposal. The writing bugged me at times too the mixing of present and past tenses.
I wanted to like it I really did but I just found myself rolling my eyes at all the dialogue and then after 60% I was just like WTF.
Bleh... Not a good one for me. There is a second one maybe that one is better.

~I read a Kindle Unlimited copy of this book for Wicked Reads Review Team~
I just loved everything about this book. It gave me the feels! There is mention of child abuse so if that is a trigger for you, you may want to use caution or just pass up. Caleb had a crappy childhood until the age of 14 when he was adopted by his best friend’s parents. Reese is the hottie at Caleb’s work. When these two get together it is flipping awesome, you can’t help but cheer them on. I don’t want to give anything away with this review because there is so much in this book that my review wouldn’t even do it justice. Just know that this book made me laugh, cry and fall in love. The secondary characters are amazing and I can’t wait to see whose story is next. This is for sure a re-read in my future.
Characters: well written
Sex: yes
Religious: no
Would I recommend to others: yes
More than one book in the series: yes
Genre: M/M Romance
Would I read more by this author: yes

Almost did not not finish...

This book was difficult to get through. The writing was pretty terribly, shifting from present tense to past tense throughout whuch annoyed the bijeasus out of me. I also had an issue eith the characterizations, Levi was a more realized character than the love interest Reese. The whole thing was more "telling" whta happened the showing. It was rather obnoxious. I did finish, becaude i had to see if it would be worth reading the next since the others characters seemed interesting, but i dont know if the writing sins are forgiveable.

This is a super sweet romance with the delight for finding out your crush likes you back.

Caleb and Reese are great. The writing is a bit rough in places but it is an enjoyable book overall especially if you are seeking something light.

A nice shelter when things are dark and a good launch to a series.

Where are the mothers ???

Seriously. Did anyone notice there is only one mother throughout this book ? 3 kids in abusive households with no mothers, just dads. I seriously don’t get that, as it was never explained.

Ok, sorry, had to get that out of the way first. Here we go.

The constant drooling state Caleb finds himself in at the start of the book is not cute, it’s not endearing, it’s not funny. However, it is overdone and overkill. A gay man (Reese) who has a crush on another openly gay man (Caleb) for FOUR YEARS and doesn’t say anything needs to check his pants for his balls, because that is just sad. However, I really liked the way their relationship developed. I freaking hated the whole nickname thing they had going - Dec, Leb, Har ... just no. I liked the dynamics between the brothers. The mom, I don’t know. I mean, although she had some awesome qualities, like the birthday parties and the way she basically dropped everything to help & support her kids, I think her being so over the top and even a little crude at times might have been done for “shock value”. I don’t think it wasn’t really necessary. Actually, if you have read Lucy Lennox’s, then you know Aunt Tilly, they’re pretty similar with the inappropriate comments at times. To me, they both lost that charm and quirkiness real quick.

I also thought it was interesting that Caleb ended up doing for his nephews almost the same thing that his adoptive family did for him. As in - almost identically the same. Wish she would have varied from that plot line to make it at least a little more interesting. Again, I have to wonder, the boys lived with Caleb’s brother, but where was their mom? Her family ? The fact that Caleb’s dad’s death was announced as an afterthought and his mom was never mentioned, or any extended family for that matter was also odd.

All things considered - I read it all, and it was not a short book. I have read much worse that’s for sure (talking about you Taylor Rylan). I’m actually going to read the next one and see if this author’s writing improves. I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt because it really wasn’t a super terrible book.

And the reason why she took eight long days to finish a normal book -regarding length- is because she would've gotten diabetes if she digested all that sugar too fast. lol

It had moments that I enjoyed, and the fact that the MCs liked and enjoyed each other's company so much and so naturally, obviously was a plus, but TOO MUCH TOO FAST.

From like 60% of the book way too many things were happening all at once... it was very hard to believe, I mean, it was OK for a distopian universe or parallel reality, but things don't work that way in real life. I somehow feel a lot of curiosity for the rest of the characters' stories, but I don't think I'll read further in this series because sometimes I was utterly annoyed by the way the narrative was developped: a bunch of repetition of things that were previously stated, as if the author thought she needed to remind us who everyone was all through out the book -I didn't forget, so STOP-, I also didn't like the fact that the MC was describing what was happening and then he'd say it all aloud again, I don't know if I'm making myself clear here, but it is a pet peeve of mine when a character in a book thinks something and then uses those exact words to voice their thoughts in the same paragraph, like... WHY?!

Anyways, it was sweet (extremely so), and sexy, and crazy. So, if you feel like you need sugar in your life, go ahead, you might like it!

I was in the mood for cheezy easy romance so this got 3* for filling that need but ymmv.

Caleb and Reese are a super sweet couple of the mythical only in novels variety. And that is okay. I enjoyed them a lot and went on to book 2 almost right away. But I could easily see how this might drive me nuts on another day. In no particular order here are some issues that I might have wanted to be warned about.

- bad editing.
- repetitive explanations
- Children not behaving like kids of the age indicated. I had to go back and read over to make sure I had read it correctly the first time.
- No real understanding on the authors part of how the justice system and child welfare agencies work. If you get assaulted and need medical care go to the hospital and not the police station. You don't have to file a police report first.
- unusual language use used by multiple characters. It is okay if one character has a particular saying but if everyone uses it that is lazy writing imo.

but my biggest issue was the nickname "leb" for Caleb. It is a terrible name and I don't want to read it over and over.

*** 3.5 ***
I liked the angst free, loving family, drama free relationship story, for the most part. For one, wow for so little actually happening this story is rather long. Still I like to read about positive and healthy relationships and loving family and friends. What irked me a little were, One: the fact that children were abused and even if they tried to hide the fact, people know, or are there no gym or swimming classes in Amerika, don't people own short sleeve shirts? Child protective services would have a field day with this in Austria. Two: why are all the people in this book calling each other asshole or something similar 'affectionatly'. Is that really something you do? I for one wouldn't want friends and family cuss me out constantly, even if meant affectionatly.
Other than that, if I exchange the cuss names with honey or something like that in my head while reading, I really liked their friends and family dynamic. Even though there isn't much plot, the characters were likeable and deserving of 3.5 stars.

A great start to a new series.

I really enjoyed Everything In Between. Nataro is great at allowing the reader to experience her stories as opposed of telling it to them.

There were a few parts that were difficult to read but the trigger warning was given in the synopsis, so I didn't feel blindsided by it. Other than that though, I loved everything about it. I loved how organically Reese and Caleb's romance grew and the sex scenes were scorching but not gratuitous.

Every one of the secondary characters were interesting and important to the story. We get enough information about them to keep the readers interested but not so much that they are taking over the story. Thus making me really look forward to reading their stories too.

5/5 beautifully romantic stars

I really enjoyed this book and overall I only have 2 little gripes about it.

One: I think that it was a bit ridiculous how they had liked each other for years, saw each other every day at work, but it took soooo long for them to do anything about it. Two: the book went on a bit longer than I think was necessary. I was at about 60% and realized that everything was going great, they could end it here, but then at about 70% or so that's when the new issues came in so the story was prolonged.

I liked both of the MCs. The family members and friends were very entertaining. This is the 3rd book I've read in the series (I read them completely out of order) and I think I like this one the most.

Maybe I'll take a gander at Declan's story next.

This book went on a bit too long with too many details near the end. And the author had no idea how reporting suspected child abuse--you don't have to prove the abuse happens when you report your suspicion to the authorities, so lack of access to medical records by regular unrelated citizens doesn't matter. And if you are then assaulted by someone you are in a custody battle with, you don't go to the police station before going to the hospital as recommended by EMTs on the scene; that medical report will only help your custody case, and the hospital will actually communicate with the police. All that said, I really enjoyed this story and any other issues were really minor and a matter of personal taste.
