Paperback Sixth printing 1967 152P. 8.00X5.25X0.50. NEUROTIC DISTORTION OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS challenges as fallacious the widely held and angrily defended conviction that psychological illness is necessary to creativity...
This book conveys an incredibly important idea, but it is so draped in poor examples and outdated analysis that reading it is something of a battle. To summarize: It is not natural for the supposed artist to be in a constant neurotic state. It is not some hyper-sensitive creative awareness; it's a mental illness and should be treated as such.
Even if you won't buy Kubie's entire argument on creativity and education, you will probably find his book to be a helpful introduction into one very vivid psychoanalytic theory of the precocious. A very lucidly written book that expresses crearly what it stands for while allowing for disagreement.
