What do you do when a game starts playing by its own rules?
Shugo and Reina only recently started playing The World, the most advanced online game ever created, but they are already well on their way to becoming heroes. They've got a great party of friends, cool new items, and now they've been joined by Zefie, a Vagrant AI who acts outside the rules of the game. As intelligent as Zefie may be, the CC Corporation isn't about to let an unstable element run free in The World -- not after what happened four years ago. So with the notorious debugging team, The Cobalt Knights, on the prowl, Shugo and company had better watch out!
Rei Idumi or Rei Izumi 依澄れい is a female Japanese manga artist. She is well known for being the artist to the manga .hack//Legend of the Twilight, and Hibiki's Magic.
I am not enjoying this as much as I thought I would. I loved the anime predecessor to this but I feel this story plot drags to much in some parts and sporadically jumps at others. I don't like how they are not explaining the employees of the company very well. They are vital to the story yet a blank slate characters and the reality vs character is not well explained, especially what they are doing or why. I really like Shugo's character. He is my favorite in this series so far. Only 1 book to goso I will finish the series but not very eager for it sadly.
The second book in the series and A LOT is happening in this one. There are still some fun moments of cuteness and quiet, but mostly the rollercoaster has started. We are on the way to the first loopings and things will go fast! I am excited, because while I love all the humour and the slice of life events, I am happy for some excitement. Get to see what is up with Shugo/Rena, see what Aura’s plans are.
We meet Kamui and ah yes I remember that I never liked the character and the idea that these people are the top dogs in the game… I mean, I get that you want to get rid of bugs, but come on there are good and bad bugs in this game. Plus, she is one of a crew, and they are all kind of obtuse with things. Having people like that rule the game? That just doesn’t make me want to play a game. Knowing that you can get in trouble for just something tiny, doesn’t make playing fun or relaxing. You would constantly be wondering if you are breaking a rule.
We meet a girl named Zefie (and see jealousy arise with Rena, haha, girl you cannot even do anything with Shugo, he is your freaking brother). The group tries to find her mother, Aura. Zefie is adorable and I hope they find her mom. I had such a laugh (though it was also a sad moment) when Zefie thought she saw her mom.. but it was a reflection in the water, you can guess what happens next.
Balmung went up a little in my respect, but just little. I still prefer the old Balmung over this one. Not just because of how he is around Rena, but also how idly he stands by and how he acts like he is better. Not a fan.
The ending, holy wow. That was on the one hand unexpected (given that it wasn’t x that happened but y), but on the other hand expected (as they are that kind of crappy person + we know CC Corp had their eyes on our group). I just felt so sorry for our group and my heart broke when I saw what was going to happen. I will definitely need to read volume 3 (the last one) very soon.
I am definitely loving the art in this one!
All in all, a fantastic second volume that sets the stage for an awesome finale! I cannot wait~
*For the first book in a "child/teen/middlegrade/nostalgic" book, I am going with the rating younger me would have gone with, then if I read on in the series, I will rate the books what adult me believes it should be rated. If the book is a stand alone, I will go with whatever rating I feel most comfortable giving the book. Please note, I do not really think books should have an age limit. People should read what they want to regardless of the intended age group, except for kids reading erotica or something, of course.*
*3 or more is good for comics, manga or graphic novels. I never really know how to rate some of these. There are some where I'm totally in love, know automatically it is a 5 star, but then some I am just not sure about in the first couple volumes.*

I recently found my old manga and am going down memory lane reading them. I really like this series; it is very nostalgic. It makes me miss playing the video games for the PS2, but those things cost an arm and a leg now! :(
I believe that this book is awesome! So the story continues into the main theme from the introduction part. The main characters Shugo and his group encounters Zefie, an AI which seems to be a child of Aura, the core of the World's system.
The story ends with the group being captured by the system administrators, who seem to have come to the conclusion to destroy anything that gets near the core of the system.
My favorite part of this book was the suspense shown during the capture, and the humorous reactions of the group when they first met Zefie.
🇩🇪Weiter geht es mit dieser wunderbaren Manga-Reihe namens ".hack//The Legend of the Twilight".
Versprochen! 🎮 ◽ ◽ 🇬🇧It continues with this wonderful Manga series called ".hack // The Legend of the Twilight". As you can see, this is all about gaming, because our hero Shugo slips into the character of the legendary Kite. And his twin sister Rena is the famous Black Rose in the online game The World.
This is also just Greek to you? Unfortunately, this also happens to our protagonist, who is an absolute beginner and hardly understands a word. He knows nothing about leveling and looting and how much fun you can actually have with other players online.
Sadly, the Mangas aren't for everyone at all, because they tie in with both the anime and the game series. It is still very much explained and I was very curious how it goes. Boredom didn't come up and the characters are all wonderfully worked out.
Nevertheless, I am very grateful to you for the universe around the series ".hack //", because it has created something unique. A world in which it is worthwhile to dive. Promised! 🎮
I have realized this series probably isn’t for me…but being it is a 3 volume series I am going to see it through until the end. My problem with the series is it has all the makings for an action packed story and yet it has a more slow walk…as if it was trying to emulate the journey of Lord of the Rings. The character dynamics are fine, but at least for me…I find myself just not caring what happens to any of the characters and that indifference might be worst then not liking something. The main two characters are twin siblings Shugo and Reina who just started playing the most popular online game called “The World” and they have started to gather a group of reliable friends. One of the things which can be considered very dangerous is vagrant AI characters…one of which has joined the team. The makers of the World are not too happy when AI is running around unchecked and uncontrolled and so the chase begins.
The first half of this volume was so boring, just felt like a whole buncha filler. And I don't like the fan service aspect of this series at all (why do they make it seem like Rena has a crush on her twin???? and in volume 1 they made Shugo oggle his twin's outfit...... I don't like it). Also very much not a fan of the Zefie character and her relationship with Shugo.
I very very much miss the protagonists from .hack//xxxx, who had clear, real-world-related character motivations (the mysterious comas). The protags here are just playing an MMORPG with nothing else going on, which is immensily boring to me.
The second half of the book is better, because of the Cobalt Knight Brigade. Finally feels like plot is happening.
I deducted a star because of a really ?????? Spot in regards to Afro’s, and the one character laughing about how they look like Africans and that just didn’t sit right with me, this along side the fact that Ganguro’s were also slandered. Besides that i have no idea where the plot is going and i do love this manga but as I’m older i think its all very in poor taste.
Things start rolling in this volume but considering that there’s only one more book to go, it’s pretty slow going. It’ll be interesting to see how they wrap up the story so quickly.
I have been working my way through the anime of this so when I saw the book on the library shelf I wanted to see what it was like. This seems to differ on many levels from the anime. This seems to have more edge to it and the plot moves along at a faster clip. The characters are really very different though. The core plot line seems to be the same but the characters are the biggest change up. The second big change is that none of them seem to be trapped in The World yet. One character not being able to log out is a big deal in the anime but that has not even been brought up yet here. I think it is just as good as the anime. It is almost like a different view of the same core story.
The adventure continues and the plot thickens in book 2. We learn more about the background of some of the characters (and the original .hackers) and a few new ones are introduced. The story remains a very fun and light-hearted adventure, though it seemed to have fewer funny moments and MMORPG-related jokes than the first one. Still a fun read, just more focused on the story than the first one was.
This is where it starts to diverge from the anime. I think I prefer this storyline more anyway, though it still involves that irritating mod Kamui. Anyway, the humor is good and the storyline is building up. Can't wait to see how they finish it off in the manga version.
Five stars for a manga because the .hack series is just great. Very relevant and interesting for a world with today's computer games, until an online game like The World comes out.
Following with the first one. Im amazed at how alot has happened and how the characters all interact with each other its very amusing and really awesome.
