A Mystery with Recipes #13

A Catered Costume Party

Rate this book
When sisters Bernie and Libby Simmons agree to cater an extravagant Halloween party in their little upstate New York town of Longely, they figured a ghost or two and a blood curdling scream might be part of the menu, but they never expected to be haunted by the deadly specter of murder . . .

Halloween is coming, and Darius Witherspoon isn’t giving up on his plan for a catered costume party—despite the recent disappearance of his wife, Penelope. He may be heartbroken, but perhaps throwing a big shindig in her honor will boost his spirits. He’s going to hold it at his stylish new co-op apartment at the Berkshire Arms, where the couple had dreamed of moving in.

Darius hires Bernie and Libby to provide the treats. They’d prefer to avoid the festivities altogether. As far as they’re concerned, the Berkshire Arms is a haunted house—or at least haunted by the memory of the murder that happened on the site, when it used to be The Peabody School. But as always, there are bills to be paid, so they accept the job. And in the midst of the celebration, Darius is discovered hanging from a noose outside one of the ballroom’s French doors . . .

Was it suicide, induced by despair over his missing spouse? Bernie and Libby think not, once they read the note he left—which includes a sum of money and a request for them to “do something” if anything should happen to him. Now, once the serving trays have been cleared and the decorations taken down, it’s time for the sisters to unmask a killer . . .

descriptionThis cover is cute. Great use of graphics. Good composition. It's colorful and eye-catching as well.description

descriptionThis is the second book in as many days that I went into thinking it was going to center around Halloween and again the holiday barely rates a mention. Be that as it may, I ended up enjoying this one a lot. I am usually very good at Sherlocking who the baddie is in these cozy mysteries, but this one led me on a merry chase. The writing was great. The plot was interesting. I haven't read any of the previous books and never felt lost (although I was curious to exactly how old Bernie and Libby are supposed to be).

description

The book wasn't heavy on secondary characters but the few that are around added an extra layer to the story. Both Libby and Bernie were likable (if a little annoying at times). They argued a bit like a couple of old biddies which led me to believe they were older (maybe in their fifties). But both had boyfriends that seemed younger, so who knows. All in all, though it was an excellent way to spend a few hours. Two thumbs up from your truly.description

I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Normally I am a fan of this series, however, the last few books haven't been as good.
I found this book to be boring and Libby and Bernie seemed silly and childish.
I find their constant complaining to be irksome and I really wanted to tell them both to grow up.
It seems they are still doing the same thing in this book that they were doing in this first.

Unfortunately, I had a hard time getting through the book and found myself skimming through towards the end.

I do love a good cosy mystery that is centered on food, this one was rather disappointing.

The sisters spend most of the book bickering about everything and it just did not come off as believable. In the beginning they are worried about business but instead of getting down to business, they don't seem to care that much about it.

A few really good desserts were mentioned in the book, but the recipes had nothing to do with any of those dishes.

For me this was a no.

Please excuse my rant but I just have to let some steam off about this character. Libby is really getting on my nerves as a leading character. She has become a persistent whinge and whiner.. She spends most of her time complaining, grumbling, carping, fussing, bitching, criticizing and griping. Humerous banter between main characters can be enjoyable especially in a cozy mystery, but in this case the sisters bantering is just downright annoying and not at all humerous with Libby appearing as a spinterish harpy. Yeah in no way is Marvin a real contender for boyfriend material especially when a date with Libby is meeting at RJ's having a beer and going home separately probably paying their own individual tabs. Let's face it Marvin is a dud spud but then so is Libby. Marvin's pet pig gets more attention and action from him than Libby. Hum, maybe that is why she is such a grump. Even the Simmons' cat Cindy seems to prefer Bernie and especially their dad Sean over Libby.

This is the thirteenth book in the mystery with recipe series. Sisters Bernie and Libby, are catering a Halloween costume party for Darius Witherspoon. When his wife, Penelope, mysteriously disappears the sisters expect him to cancel the party, but he insists it go on as planned. During the party Darius appears to have hung himself in an apparent suicide. Bernie and Libby think he was murdered after reading the note he left them with a large sum money and for them to find out what happened to him.
I liked how the author started the book with us knowing part of the murder plot. That is something different than her previous books that I really enjoyed. I love the closeness the sisters have with each other and also with their farther. While I could have done without the fathers girlfriend, she was an okay character and I am curious as to how she will fit in the next book. The mystery was ok. I liked the different twists that kept me guessing. I also love the Halloween theme.
I received an ARC from net galley for review.

Darius Witherspoon has killed his wife and went ahead with the Halloween party she was planning before which, he gave caterers, Bernie and Libby, an envelope with instructions to open it if he didn't return for it.

After he's found hanging from an upstairs window during the party, Bernie retrieves the envelope which contains $5000 and a note telling her and Libby to use the money to find out who did this to him.

There were quite a few secrets and intrigue in this book. It read a little differently from books I'm used to reading. I guess there was just so much more dialogue but when it was between the sisters, it was usually fun banter. I mean who but two sisters can bicker/joke with one another while stranded on a roof top, right? I thought it was a nicely constructed mystery and I would like to read the first one in the series to get a little more backstory on the sisters and their dad who in this book is engaged to someone much younger than he is.

I enjoyed that they conferred with their dad who was a retired police officer and it was fun to see him actually go sleuthing with them. I didn't guess the killer at all although my suspicions about something else turned out right. A different type read isn't always a bad thing!

I volunteered to read an ARC of this book and give an honest review. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for providing the advanced e-copy.

I've read a few books in this series and after starting Catered, I realized why it's not on my must read list. Bernie and Libby don't have much chemistry and the secondary characters don't play a big role at all here (not that they are very personable either).

The story starts with the first person POV of the killer which is unusual. I didn't find it terribly compelling. As the story continues, more elements, suspects and motives come to play, but it wasn't enough for me to give the book more than an OK rating. I also had some questions about what happened to someone (how someone acted/responded which was left off page) but I don't want to give any spoilers.

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Although not a total waste, I was not impressed as I found portions of the plot cliched. The ending, too, was a disappointment.
For what it's worth, the book has pretty cover art.

I was given this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have only read one other Isis Crawford book, and I have to admit that I liked this one a lot more. I think I need to start the series from the beginning, although it wasn't that difficult to follow along the storyline, even though I didn't know a lot of the character's back stories.

The characters are interesting, and I enjoy the interactions between Bernie and Libby. It feels authentic, with squabbling but real affection.

The mystery was interesting and lasted through the entire book. I had my suspicions about who did it, but it was a good mystery.

I'd recommend this to any cozy mystery lover and plan to read more in this series.

When the host of a Halloween party Bennie and Libby are catering for ends up dead the police immediately think suicide, but was it? His wife recently disappeared could she be back for revenge or did Darius feel guilty over her being missing. The sisters think murder because Darius left them a note from the grave asking them to solve his murder. Can the sisters clear it up and show that he was murdered or was it truly a suicide and this is Darius's way at getting back at his enemies. Follow along as Bernie and Libby dig to find out the truth of what really happened that fateful night. Will they be able to find answers before something befalls them? Dive in and find out.

Isis Crawford has written a delightful series about two sisters, Bernie and Libby, who have taken over their mother's shop called A Little Taste of Heaven. Throughout the series we have seen the sisters hard at work making all sorts of wonderful foods for the bakery and catering service. We have seen their dad recover from injuries that forced him to retire as police chief, and watched the girls hoover over him. It is one of those warm series that you never get tired of reading or even rereading her books. The sisters have become quite good at sleuthing and with their dad's help, I have no doubt there isn't a crime that they can't solve.

This Halloween story has multiple crimes and bodies, and nothing is quite what it seems. The setting is at a former private school (suspected to be haunted) and on the edge of the Hudson River. It is a fascinating blend of diverse personalities, history, and lifestyles. The author keeps things moving even when Bernie and Libby don't seem to be making much headway. Best of all, the twists and turns lead to a very surprising ending!

Well written mysteries and characters coupled with foodie talk that makes you drool, only gets better when you discover there are a few recipes in the back of the book as well! What fun. I haven't tried any from this book yet, but ones from other books in the series have been delicious. So this book is a win-win-win-winner all the way!

Halloween Story Bernie and Libby are still running their bakery business and catering business. They have been hired by Darius Witherspoon to cater a Costume Party that he is giving friends and business associates. But he signed the contract prior to the murder of his wife. He has been pretending that she has been missing. Bernie and Libby are also dealing with their dad's girlfriend who has opened her own bakery business. She even inserts herself into their business whenever she can. Every time she serves a meal to Sean (their father) he barely eats it and then asks his girls for their food from their bakery. He also thanks God that they cook like their mother. When they ask him why they just don't tell her, he says, then he would have to say what he does like and he doesn't like any of it.

The story involves ghosts, zombies (wife wasn't really dead, but he thought she was), revenge (all the stolen monies and a death of an innocent villager). Darius was a treasure hunter who used others money to get there and then does things that cause him to have to run from people.

Right before his party, he brings an envelope to Bernie and Libby and asks them to keep it in their safe until after the party. They open it if he dies, but return it if he lives. When he dies, Bernie runs to their safe and gets it. They know that he didn't kill himself and now they have to prove to everyone, including Lucy (the chief of police who hates them).

The story gets better at the end but seems to take too much attention to read. Yeah, it seems I am into quick reads, but I just need too much time to sit and get into the book and end up rereading parts that I already read. I also have to keep going back to find a person briefly mentioned at another part of the story so was not memorable enough for the next mention. I have others of her books and may read a few of them as I am interested to know how and when Sean no longer needed a wheelchair. I get the feeling that these are the books that need to be read in order.

This was an interesting mystery. I was surprised by the ending. I still like the sisters. I thought their boyfriends would have been in this more than they were, which was disappointing. Also, I like the food in this story and the recipes at the end.

Two twins that own a bakery are catering a Halloween party when the host winds up dead… and left them 5 grand and a letter to investigate his murder if he were to die. I just loved this! The twins were relatable and funny. The Halloween vibes were fun and my interest was piqued throughout!

I hate rating books with less than 3-4 stars, but I honestly struggled through this book and had to quit reading it halfway through. This is the first book I've picked up from this series and I was very excited to read it because of the Halloween theme.

I loved the first chapter, which actually took place in a different character's head and detailed what they were doing and thinking as they murdered another character. Fantastic start! It immediately got my attention as something new that I hadn't seen in a cozy before. However, I ended up hating the two main characters (Bernie and Libby). These two sisters seem like they hate each other and they are constantly bickering. I ended up getting fed up and stopped reading about halfway through, which is a shame because the theme was plenty fun and I enjoyed the character of Darius greatly. I was definitely intrigued by the plot line, but the main characters were either boring or constantly fighting, which was ultimately frustrating.

Normally I like easy-to-read cozy mysteries. This one took me forever to finish, because I just wasn't interested in it. Mostly because of the way it was written. The dialogue between characters was drawn out and unrealistic. The sisters talk to each other like they are in 3rd grade. I found too many characters were hard to keep up with, and didn't really provide anything to the story. The writing was just plain poor. For instance toward the end of the book a character says: "I told him and I told him and I told him." It's almost like that time I had to write 500 words for English class so every other thing was really really interesting or very very different.

Word: Crenulated: having an irregularly wavy or serrate outline.

Quote: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you're wrong."

I only finished this in order to find out "who done it".....

Some guy hits his wife on the head & throws her in the river... He seems to be afraid of someone following him... He hires the sisters to cater a costume party, with his payment he hands one an envelope to be opened in case something happens to him.

During the party he is found hanging outside the ballroom.... When opened the envelope contains $5,000 and a cryptic note asking the sisters to find out what happened to him.

There are these two sisters who investigate crimes together, but all they do is bicker & bitch, & bully each other.

There were FOUR chapters just on them arguing about being stuck on the roof in the rain! FOUR FREAKIN' Chapters!

Not Ever Again!

I really wanted to like this silly little mystery. To be sure, I checked it out from the library on a whim. I loved the cover as I am a sucker for Halloween, and with the dark and overcast days due to Hurricane Irma, I thought it would make an enjoyable read. Unfortunately, I disliked the two main characters...a lot. I found them silly, rude and dull. The plot was ridiculous and the ending almost unnoticeable. I will leave it at that. To be fair, I must admit that I am not a big cozy mystery fan although I do enjoy mysteries on the whole. I took a chance. It did not pay off.

Title: A Catered Costume Party
Series: A Bernie and Libby Culinary Mystery - Book 15
Author: Isis Crawford
Genre: Culinary Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Kensington

Bernie and Libby Simmons agree to cater a Halloween party in Longely, New York. They didn’t like a ghost being part of the experience, but it's not like they have a choice. Darius Witherspoon is determined to throw his party even though his wife, Penelope is missing. He never counted on his murder being the entertainment for the evening.

The Berkshire Arms is a haunted house at least as far as Bernie and Libby are concerned. Darius hires them to provide the treats. They wish they could say no, but bills need to be paid, so they accept the job. As soon as the guest start arriving the girls sense something is off with Darius. A short while later, Darius is found hanging from a rope outside one of the ballroom’s French doors.

Was it suicide? Bernie and Libby don’t think so. Once everything has been cleared away, and the decorations are taken down, the sisters begin their investigation and set out to expose a killer.

--

A Catered Costume Party is the 15th book in this series. Even without reading any additional books in the series, it is fairly simple to follow the plot. The main characters created by Ms. Crawford are strong in personality and intellect.

Bernie and Libby are typical sisters; they torment each other, find fault with one another but care deeply for each other. They have distinctive personalities that are very dissimilar from each other. Where Bernie is bold and eager to take risks, Libby is quieter, less prone to do anything rash without her sisters goading.

The sister's father is an intelligent and caring man who delights in watching his children succeed, even when they don’t realize it. As a former police officer, he encourages the girls to dig into the crimes they unwittingly keep stepping into. Where most fathers would dissuade their daughters from taking chances or stepping on toes, he has no trouble driving the girls towards confrontation or danger in order to help them figure out a crime. The additional characters in A Catered Costume Party have similar roles to play in the plot, but none of them are as memorable as Bernie and Libby’s dad.

As the narrative unfolds, the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride as each suspect is exposed and their motives brought to light. When the murderer is exposed, many readers will be taken by surprise but satisfied by the outcome.

Although the writing is fluid, and the plot kept at the forefront, the story is not fast-paced. At times the story gets a bit bogged down in too many questions that never appear to go anywhere. More knowledge of the previous books could strengthen the overall story and keep the reader from scratching their head in puzzlement.

However, this book is engaging; the plot is unusual in and of itself. Readers will derive even more satisfaction if they go back and read the other books in this series. Even with some minor issues, this book is recommended. Readers will be inspired to keep turning the page to discover the killer's identity and witness the sisters triumph. Those who enjoy authors such as Jessica Beck or Leighann Dobbs will want to continue reading this series.

A Catered Costume Party by Isis Crawford is the thirteenth A Mystery with Recipes novel. Bernie and Libby Simmons have agreed to cater Darius Witherspoon’s Halloween party at the Berkshire Arms (the old Peabody School). They do not wish to return to the building, but bills must be paid. They are surprised Darius was still going through with the party since he wife, Penelope went missing three weeks prior (methinks something hinky is going on). The celebration is in full swing, but the guest of honor has yet to make an appearance. Suddenly a scream rings out and the guests can see the Darius’ body hanging outside the French doors. The police rule it a Halloween prank gone wrong, but the Simmons sisters have other ideas. They waste no time in diving into their investigation to prove that Darius was murdered and identify the culprit.

A Catered Costume Party is the thirteenth book in the series, but it can be read alone (easily). While the book is easy to read (for the most part), it has a slow pace (the roof scene went on forever). The sisters’ constant speculation and questions bog down the story along with the repetition of details (the crime scene, Darius’ life, their business, Michelle and their father, Sean). I did like how the author started the novel with Darius offing his wife (this is not a spoiler). It sets the stage for the rest of the story. The killer’s identity is easy to discern. I knew how the story would play out after I read the beginning (do you think I have read too many mysteries?). While I identified the culprit early in the story, many readers will be surprised when the perpetrator is revealed. My rating for A Catered Costume Party is 3 out of 5 stars (it is okay). I am shocked that the sisters are still in business with the small amount of time they spend at A Little Taste of Heaven (no wonder they are having trouble paying their bills). Sean Simmons girlfriend, Michelle is irritating and dislikable. I wish the author had not written her into the series. The sisters’ childishness regarding Michelle has gone on far too long. I can certainly understand their disdain but does it have to be brought up so often in the story. Libby and Bernie’s squabbling got on my nerves (I read to be relaxed, not irritated). I ended up skimming through the last half of this book just to reach the end and verify the killer’s identity. I do want to mention that there is mild foul language in A Catered Costume Party. I read A Catered Murder (first book in series) when it first came out and after reading A Catered Costume Party, I notice a lack of growth/development Libby and Bernie Simmons. One thing I enjoy about cozies is how the characters develop of the course of the series. We get to know and love the characters. In this case, the Simmons’ sisters seem to be going backward with regard to their behavior. I have come to the conclusion that I am not the right audience for this series.

“A Catered Costume Party” a whimsical murder-mystery opens with the death Darius Witherspoon who tried unsuccessfully to kill his wife twice before finishing the deed and throwing her body into the Hudson River. Reportedly devastated after advising the police she’s missing, but having already planned a Hallowe’en party at the purportedly haunted Berkshire Arms he decides to go ahead with the celebration to boost his spirits.

Hiring Bernie and Libby Simmons from “A Little Taste of Heaven” the festivities go off without a hitch until one of the sisters sees a figure floating towards the stairs and all the guests are stunned minutes later to see Darius’s body hanging over a window. Although Chief of Police Lucas Broadbent declares the death a suicide, when Bernie and Libby receive an envelope with money and a note from Darius asking them to look into his death if anything happens to him, they begin an investigation that leads them to a second killing.

Well-developed, sprinkled with humor and with recipes at the end of the book the action never slows as the sisters uncover suspects that include an angry boss and a bankrupt building owner as well as motives that involve shady deals and a treasure hunt. Centered around Berkshire Arms once a private boarding school closed after a mysterious death, the backdrop is haunted by two more brutal murders and a flock of crows that suspiciously seem to herald the deaths. Weather and sinister intent fuels the tension and suspense when Bernie and Libby get locked in while on the roof of the building; face off with William Moran; and discover expensive clothing in an old building down by the river. And just when you think you might know the identity of the killer, there’s a twist at the end.

Bernie and Libby are likable sisters with their witty banter and very different personalities. Bernie is very self-assured, determined, impulsive and resourceful while Libby is the sensible, unruffled and realistic sister. They listen and respect the advice of their father Sean Simmons the former police chief, but don’t gravitate towards his ingratiating and interfering girlfriend Michelle. I kept wondering throughout the story why Sean put up with Michelle, but perhaps the reasons are buried in previous mysteries.

I liked “A Catered Costume Party” as the two sleuths cleared away the Hallowe’en decorations and serving trays to search for clues to unmask the mysterious killer. I rate this book in the high 3.o's as there was little development of the secondary characters but have given it a 4.0 because of the scale limitation.

Once again, I jumped into a series that has already been established. In this case, it's well established. Can you jump into a series at book 13? I wouldn't have thought so but yes, you can. Isis Crawford manages to make each a stand-alone book yet it has the feel of a world that has underlying plot-lines woven among the books. I didn't feel as though I missed anything by not starting at the beginning and I didn't feel like I was getting any spoilers. Maybe when I go back and read the series, I will realize that maybe there were a few but I doubt it. The world created is very rich and meeting these characters where I did felt like hanging out with friends I had just met.

The book was well-written with a definite Hitchcock meets cozy vibe. It took place around Halloween and the decorations for the holiday were utilized wonderfully. There were lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I could brag that I guessed who the guilty party was but to be honest, I guessed a lot of other people too and kept bouncing among them.

I expected that with the Halloween theme we may get recipes to go along that line. Nope. The 3 recipes have a loose central theme relating to Scandinavia. Two of them, I will definitely try and the last I'm looking forward to serving at a party.

The characters were well-developed, even if you were being introduced to them for the first time. I loved the sisters (Libby and Bernie) and their relationship with their dad (Sean). It felt very real. The dad's girlfriend was like nails on a chalkboard and I took a serious dislike to her. I'm not sure why I reacted to her as strongly as I did since I have no build up with these characters and she wasn't a main player in the book.

I definitely recommend this book to lovers of cozies and I would even recommend it to fans of suspense mysteries/thrillers who are looking for something just a little bit lighter than their norm.

Thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing, and Isis Crawford for the opportunity to read this book and provide my honest opinion of it.

The book begins with Darius hitting his wife Penelope over the head and weighing down her body so it will sink in water. In order to explain her disappearance, he tells everyone that she was very depressed. Darius also tells them that he is not cancelling the costume party he had planned; he is having it anyway because his wife loved Halloween. After that, the author does a nice job of showing how Darius is changing. He acts like he is worried and things aren’t going well. During the party, someone is killed.

Next, the two female leads, Libby and Bernie, join forces to solve the murder. If they weren’t bickering, they often came up with lots of inane comments while dealing with some of the people that they knew. That often became quite annoying and it was relief when the comments stopped as their investigation broadened and they had more people to interview. There were some unexpected twists in the story, and an interesting assortment of suspects. By the end, the mystery was neatly tied up.

One thing that puzzled me is that numerous delicious sounding fall desserts were mentioned in the book, and since this is advertised as having original recipes to try, I expected them to show up at the end. None of them did. The three recipes that were included aren’t for things I want to eat, so that was a disappointment.

I didn’t like how the author threw in cursing. While it only happened once, that was enough. Why do authors feel a need to bring God into their curse words? This is a huge pet peeve of mine. This is a first for a cozy mystery, and one I hope to not see again. Note to authors: some people find this very offensive. Many Christians like to read cozy mysteries because they don’t have this.

Overall the book was ok.

Thanks to Kensington Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4 1/2 stars

I enjoyed reading A Catered Costume Party very much. It's a fun cozy mystery read. I've read all the previous books in the series, and I think this is the best one yet. The plot and the character development was better, and the writing itself has improved. This is a series, but it's not necessary to read the other books first to enjoy this one.

Bernie and Libby Simmons run a bakery and a catering business called A Little Taste of Heaven in a NYC suburb. Their father is the retired police chief of their small town, and has helped them solve murders in the past.

This year for Halloween, a new member of the community, Darius Witherspoon, throws a Halloween party and hires Bernie and Libby to cater, in a possibly haunted former school that's been turned into condos. His wife has recently disappeared, but the party goes on. The girls are setting up, go to find the host, and discover him hanged from a window. The current police chief declares the death a suicide, but Bernie and Libby think Darius has been murdered and start looking into his death.

Their investigation leads them to some surprising discoveries about both Darius and his missing wife. Te plot took a lot of twists and turns, and the identity of the murderer was a surprise until the end. Character development was strong.

I highly recommend this book. It's a very enjoyable read. There are recipes included at the end, which is a nice bonus!

Sisters Bernie and Libby Simmons run a bakery/catering shop that used to be their mother's. Both girls also take after their dad, a retired police detective, in the way they think. It seems the girls have run afoul of the new police chief by consistently solving the crimes they run across before he does...even so far as solving this crime...one he has pegged as a suicide.
Darius Witherspoon hires the pair to cater his Halloween party ….and then gives them an envelope to be opened in case of his death.
When he does die..in a horrific fashion at the party, the ladies open the envelope and find $5000 and a request to find the killer.
Since they have the money the girls decide to try to fit investigating the death into their schedule. It's not easy with trying to run the business, dad's new girlfriend trying to steal their customers and the police chief's interference.
And ..Oh...Did I mention it's on the property of the old Peabody School..the one they catered a Halloween party at last year and a head came rolling down the steps.
This is a fun funky addition to the 'Catered' series, complete with a few recipes.
I requested and received an ARC copy from NetGalley as soon as I saw this was available. This tale will draw you in, make you laugh and alternately give you the willies. The characters are vivid enough for you to clearly see them.

I was lucky enough to get an advanced ebook copy of this book from NetGalley. When I saw the cover I was excited to read it because I love Halloween themed books.
The book starts with someone killing his wife, only to end up dead himself a few weeks later at his costume party. The sisters are catering the party. Before the party the host gives them an envelope and tells them to keep it in case something happens to him. Turns out that the envelope is full of money and a note asking them to investigate his murder.
The mystery was very good, I had no idea who the killer was. And I loved the twist with the wife.
My issue with the book was that most of the book takes place in November and not Halloween like the cover implies. There seemed to be some references to a previous book (I think the Halloween one) which I haven't read, so I wish she had done a brief recap of why the sisters hated the building the party was at. And I felt like the author spent to much time on the girls being stuck on the roof.
All in all it was a great mystery and now I want to get caught up on the rest of the series.
