When mankind stumbled upon an enormous structure buried deep in the bowels of the Earth, it was decided its location and existence would remain a closely guarded secret ... with good reason. It seems whoever created this ancient world knew something we didn't ... THE SAFETY OF OUR PLANET’S SURFACE IS AN ILLUSION
It is a lesson from history we have learned to accept The only problem is … for many of us
… that lesson might have come too late
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note Dark Descent can be read as a standalone novel; however, reading Ancient Origins: Revelations, Book One of Ancient Origins, beforehand is recommended for heightened enjoyment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ancient Origins: Dark Descent (Book Two of Ancient Origins) [Previously entitled: 2041 Sanctuary (Dark Descent)]
"Humanity’s greatest discovery ... the journey has only just begun."
Sarah Morgan is trapped, a prisoner in a highly classified subterranean facility, the existence of which is undeniable proof of the most amazing discovery in human history. If Sarah is to unleash this forbidden knowledge, she must use all her skills and tenacity to escape to the surface; against the odds can she achieve her life’s ambition and expose the truth to the world?
Above ground, the peoples of planet Earth struggle to come to terms with their new existence after the impact of the asteroid, AG5. Plunged into darkness, the dust cloud kicked up by the meteorite seeks to destroy the fragile order of civilisation itself. In this new, sunless world a courageous BBC newsreader, Jessica Klein, attempts to fight those in power and wrest from them a secret she may wish she’d never known. Elsewhere, two men working for the GMRC, the behemoth that is the Global Meteor Response Council, are struggling against monumental adversity thrust upon them by one of their own. Professor Steiner and Richard Goodwin may be humanity’s greatest hope, but their destinies are shrouded by a chaos neither can control. Running out of luck, choices and time they must reclaim their chosen paths or watch those around them wither and die.
As a young boy Robert always dreamed about becoming a fiction writer, but it never occurred to him that he could follow that dream. Some years later fate intervened and he was struck down with a debilitating neurological condition, which was brought on by a car accident some years earlier. Rendered housebound on and off for well over a decade, he thought his condition signaled an end to his life, but Robert had failed to realize something ... he was wrong, and in his darkest hours he turned to writing as a means of escape. Never thinking anyone would read his work, let alone like it, Robert has now published four books in his bestselling Ancient Origins series and plans on writing four more, along with a fantasy series and a number of thrillers. His condition still keeps him indoors more than he would like, but it doesn't stop him from writing, and more importantly it doesn't stop him from dreaming...
Robert currently lives in the county of Kent in England and is a lover of science, archaeology and the mysterious. He has a passion for films, specifically action and adventure, science fiction and blockbuster thrillers, but as he got older he realised new releases rarely matched the classics he'd already had the privilege of watching, and it was partly this frustration that led him to create a world of his own.
This was (and the series is) an engaging and interesting read. It is imaginative and fun.
There were a couple of issues that were distracting. Some were very simple things, like revolvers don't have safeties (yes, there are a few rare revolvers that have a pressure plate on the grip that ensure that it is being firmly gripped before firing - but this isn't the same as "making sure the safety was on" on a revolver). It seems to be a common mistake from British authors, who aren't as familiar with firearms.
The other main distraction was the use of British phrasing. Yes, it's a British author with some British characters, so referring to a flashlight as a torch is kind of engaging, except when used in dialog by the American characters (or saying things like "we'll be round the next town" - Americans don't speak that way). There were many instances of American military characters speaking with British turns of phrase. This isn't terrible, but it was noticeable.
The main problem *** spoiler alert *** is that the other asteroids following in the same path as the first, will all impact Earth. Unless specifically launched at the Earth by an entity that took the rotational aspects of our solar system into account and specifically spaced them to intersect with the Earth's rotation around the sun, this just isn't feasible. All planets in the solar system orbit on the same plane. If the asteroid trajectory was in this same plane it is very unlikely they would all impact with Earth. Either the outer planets would collide with them first, or our orbit would be on the other side of the sun or at the very least, not aligned with the asteroids path. If they were coming from a trajectory not in our plane of orbit, the chances of them impacting Earth become very small. Hopefully, later installments will confirm that the asteroids were intentionally launched at Earth by a society with the ability to do such a thing, because it isn't likely that a natural train of asteroids could do this.
Overall, the first two books were fun. I'm half way through the third and expect to read the entire series. I like it, and recommend them. They are good reads, and although some of the characters seem a little one-dimensional it still works. However, having a proof-reader from each demographic group do a read-through to ensure correct dialog would have made it much less distracting.
The characters that annoyed me with their juvenile behavior and ridiculous dialogue in the first book of the series became even more grating in this one--so much so that I will not be reading the other books in the series.
Rating: minus 15 on a scale of minus 15 to plus 5.
I suffered Kindle/Goodreads harassment, page functions, options, keyboard alterations and other, since a few months into my membership. I experienced a slight respite after the Australian Intervention and now my keyboard split screen has returned. unlike before, Kindle have blocked my ability to change it.
It seems a disturbed Amazon tech or supervisor feel emboldened by the new US regime. The Amazon incels misbehave again. I used my phone to video the screen and options, which in all honesty is amusing.

I recently saw a member of the Village Idiot Movement, who whilst insulting a creator, complain to her that I list other trans creators. The Snowflake (nasty, uncouth, stupid US baby-man) epidemic continues. A trigger warning then.
The channels listed include primatologist, bi, German, older, socialist, architect, farmer, cis, redhaired, theoretical physicist, asexual, economist, autist, het, military boardgamer, communist, WOC, trans, blond, paleontologist, model painter, intersex, Indian, lumber yard worker, tall, lesbian, mathematician, literary critic, marine biologist, queer, Canadian, married, zoologist, astrophysicist, sewist, military historian and others known as Women.
Almost as damaging to the limited reference group are the anarchist, other BIPOC, artist, Australian, philosopher, older, archaeologist, other LGBTQI+, fashion historian, book reviewer, Estonian, ginger, boater, other neurodivergent, modeller, boardgamer, film maker, short, RPG player, boat builder, language historian, New Zealander, train historian, chemist, musician, anthropologist, writer and others known (outside the USA) as Human Beings.
If the voices persist, I suggest immediate conversion to any Mahayana Buddhism, developing a new skill (Reading perhaps) or emergency application for our Catholic exorcism.
These rewrites are tedious but I remember a short early days interview with a middle aged teacher, who organised and led her civilian anti-tank team in hunting Russian armour north of Kyiv. With their example I have no choice but to continue. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the Heroes. Crimea is Ukraine.
To attempt this book, I must have been mesmerized by the train wreck of the first. There might be a one star review which agrees but Goodreads did not at the time of the original, Allow me to see other reviews.
The background consists of one implausible precondition after another. This is an absurd depiction of the near future supported by contrivance, racism and misogyny, worthy of the Heritage Foundation or the Trump Administration.
Lack of writing skill and effort to develop it, can only create sad characters. The character work and plot are not bad, they do not exist. This is standard for current low end US science fiction. Neither is there a big idea in this book. I had thought that an essential element central to science fiction but according to US publishers, I was wrong.
This book is a political statement. That the USA have the right to invade a neighbour country is assumed. The central plot feature is that the USA could launch an army in an underground invasion of a neighbour country with them not noticing because they are Mexicans? No, that sounds blatantly racist.
US mercenaries are heroic figures, much like the US ICE. The mercenaries are paid by persons unknown. The US military is in contrast portrayed as venal, unprofessional and clueless.
Every female character emphasizes lack of agency, ability to think clearly even.
That should suffice in making the decision whether to read the book or not. Several of my commenters to other of my reviews explained, "It is just science fiction, after all". The current US government actions would indicate otherwise.
There are sources for history, politics, military affairs, science and philosophy, among other useful topics readily available to the writer on YouTube, no reading required. If these writers do not avail themselves, their books are by design nothing more than political fantasies. If US publishers pay for them, there are questions to be asked.

Because of the low bar for the bulk of low end science fiction especially Kindle Loans, I watch more of my science fiction than read at the moment. If expecting more than the occasional Indie gem, I would not look to Kindle Unlimited.
The YouTube Short Film channels and streaming services provide science fiction, which is generally better written and always more interesting.
I discovered in addition to other areas, YouTube host book channels. 😍 They discuss everything from library furnishings to formal literary criticism. They foster a broad community of serious, thoughtful readers, who love all things bookish.
They are a far different experience to that of Amazon/Goodreads.
Consider treating this site as hostile. 😐
Goodreads do not allow discourse. As an example. I wrote a very short negative review of Powers of the Earth. This was a poorly written, juvenile salute to the sociopathic January 6, 2021 hero, wherein a rich dweeb enlists the military to overthrow the US government in order to not pay taxes. I thought the glorification of such to be dangerous and unhealthy.
The writer, Travis Corcoran self-identified as veteran, libertarian (now anarcho capitalist?) and advocate for the return of chattel slavery (popular US opinion apparently), employee of an unnamed US agency and admirer of Putin (popular stance among US white nationalists).
Mississippi have introduced a law to legalise slavery again. Agricultural regions voted more than 80% to deport tens of millions of their own workforce. Veterans and other federal employees voted by near 70% for massive elimination of US agencies. 50%+ of white females voted for an end to their voting, bodily autonomy and other rights.
I saw clips of cheering at Republican rallies promising all those policies.
These voters now post videos seeking support. The writer seems to have been ahead of his time.
It is no surprise in retrospect that Travis and six fellow patriots were outraged by my opinion. They spent close to a year demanding responses to increasingly desperate and despicable posts or they would label me a narcissist.
As a communist with no love of irony, the levels of same were painful.
The last comment before the Australian incident came from a Claes Rees Jr aka cgr710 now ka Clayton R Jesse Jr. He now seems to no longer identify as Nazi.
After referencing the content of my last message to a Goodreads friend, he proudly declared that They had "won" (?).
I discovered that apparently every female creator which I mentioned had been subjected to a flood of racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQI+ and similar comments, which continues still. They failed to impress the theoretical physicist, model painter, farmer, midteen boater or her mother and the many other creators.
Though They failed, the world's store of unpleasantness was increased and They did deliver to a multinational audience an accurate self-portrait of the snowflake (vicious, ignorant, US man-child) and Their understanding of free speech.
This seems Victory. Goodreads is a wonderful reader's forum ?? USA, yay ??
Not quite what I originally expected.

Ominous music begins. 🙂 Member and employee abuse of the unpopular judgement are to the mental, acceptable. In their minds differing views justify doxxing, stalking and more. Amazon do not acknowledge incidents, though employees actively support harassment of the one or two star reviewer or BookTuber even.
My experience of Goodreads harassment, culminated in Amazon providing my limited message history to those madmen/women, which allowed Pine Gap to request that Australian security services interrogate the one friend whom I occasionally messaged. Their attempt at my personal history failed but did leave two outraged customers.
Their response after we broadcast our anger, was to reverse all page alterations and options, remove lurkers, mask all comments and the rest. Now my split screen is returned and my option to remove it disappeared.
Recently a seventh ex-employee of EBay was sentenced for the harassment of a couple whose small ecommerce channel was deemed unkind to EBay. The couple were awarded millions and that ex-employee had been the Chief of Global Security or some such. With the ascension of Trump and Republican Party, I expect US data corporations will act in ever more cavalier manner. Things to consider.
I recommend a few precautions as regards Amazon. Remove all personal information from profile and avoid the messaging function. Remove the lurker, those friends who never post. They are likely monitors for gangs or employee created dummies not admirers.
Given the Amazon penchant for Alteration of customer pages and more, the screenshot of the odd, ugly and threatening are invaluable. These should suffice.
Kindle are another matter. Do Not "Purchase" Kindle ebooks. You do not own them and they may be deleted at Amazon's whim. There are BookTubers able and willing to suggest alternative vendors of ebooks and readers. In addition they will suggest alternatives to ebook purchase.
Do Not use Files, Calendar, Contacts or Email. I confirmed that Amazon employees sign into email without permission or notice. Make of that what you will.
Searches on Silk should of course, be innocuous and non-critical.
Unlimited supplies with some few exceptions, the most awful fiction titles and Amazon have and are presently actively recruiting writers lacking talent.
These precautions cost little, to not might do. Most members are silent when they see abuse, which ended any confidence in Goodreads. The nutters seem to drift to the brutal in a sad attempt at imitating agency. I stopped visiting BookTubers celebrating Amazon, Kindle or Goodreads.
It is prudent to remember that the nutcases among the membership and employees are possessed of no morality, never ask the question "Are we the baddies" but are US patriots. Ominous music ends. 🙂
Be safe and may we all find Good Reading! 😊

I wish you a gorgeous morning, an exhilarating afternoon, a cosy evening, a splendid night and may we all continue to learn.
The Dead do not feel the pain their Death causes others. The same is true of the Stupid and Stupidity.
Some time has passed (after Ancient Origins #1), and we get deeper into the "what's going on" and leave two story lines hanging, and coming close to merging in the end.
We continue to follow Sarah and her crew as they had followed the archeological finds into a cave system and stumbled into USSB Sanctuary, or rather, its outer limits. We also follow a large group that had escaped USSB Steadfast, who have arrived at another area of Sanctuary, but are "stuck".
We are introduced to astronauts... and have yet to see how they will fit into the bigger picture, but we know they do.
A small splinter group break out of USSB Steadfast, and we follow them in their attempt to reach Sanctuary.
And we also follow the reporter/newsreader Jessica Klein as she tries to figure out what secrets are being kept from the general populace.
My reading pace slowed as there were a lot of big changes going on in life, but kept getting drawn back to this "other world", both above and under ground. And interestingly enough, as I moved on to a different "read", every time I came back to my Kindle, I half expected to be brought back into this world.
Definitely kept my interest... and I'll be back for the next installment!
I had previously read the first book in this series, so when I saw a set with the first three books I decided to continue on with the series. I'm convinced this was a very good decision. I've become hooked following the various groups underground as well as the above ground group, as they each go about their own path to achieve their goals. Interestingly enough in book three the goals and members of two of the groups intersect above ground with a fair amount of backstabbing and intrigue. Of course the other groups have their own issues to contend with as well as trying to survive in their underground environs.
Robert Storey has created a world that is on one hand familiar but at the same time very foreign and at times very inhospitable. I'm looking forward to starting the fourth book in this series. I highly recommend this series for those readers who enjoy a little alternative science mixed in with a dystopian world that is filled with adventure, action, suspense and some political intrigue.
There are some books where you can forgive the obvious flaws so that you can progress a compelling narrative. The story continues at a pace so you can forgive some of the flaws in the characters or have these flaws also progress that story. Sadly this book's character flaws are jarring enough to take you out of the narrative and start to examine the entire premise around that characters story arc and then, through the lens of these flaws, start to open the plot holes to a point where you can't unsee them. What started out as a thriller with a compelling story line has become a stuttering and jarring story as I come to grips with characters that, in a sane world, could not feasibly exist. And once the plot holes are explored a familiar refrain of "Oh come on!!!" is heard from me.
While I am invested in the overall story line and am interested as to how the story arcs intersect, the characters and writing are making me wince, which is a shame
I will admit, I am glad this book is finished so I can move on to something better. The archaeologists are painfully juvenile, at times seeming to emanate from the halls of a high school. I am mildly curious how the whole series ends but not enough so to read 2 more books. I wish the whole series was condensed into a shorter, faster paced story. At times in seems it is drawn out on purpose. Also, while I fully accept the asteroid hitting the earth premise I find it difficult to fathom 6 or 7 extinction level asteroids hitting the earth in just a few years. The odds are astronomical small. Perhaps this will be explained in a latter book, but I do not have the patience to find out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This multi-book series continues with the Global Meteor Response Council up to its usual nasty tricks, having become an almost all-powerful organization globally. The first meteor had struck off South Africa and itself was enough to have global results yet there are five more asteroids on a collision course with Earth.
Sarah, from book 1, is held by the military. There's an organization from the Vatican that wants to break up all the work, a traitor in the underground base and something very, very strange deep in the depths under the base. There's so much that happens the best I can do is say that this is another really good book in the series.
Still enjoying the book, there were however quite a few instances where the writing/grammatical weirdness made me think the editor could've done a better job though. Some character quibbles (but in this genre, it's not too uncommon with overly competent/lucky protagonists
An excellent continuation of the first book. Great character development and good interweaving of separate story lines. On the other hand, the conditions on the surface I cannot believe. There is no way that any semblance of civilization would be left and able to function in the dark. Where does the food come from? The economy would we eliminated and things would be a prehistoric bartering system. Please stick to the subsurface stories as they are plausible.
I was wondering why I was having a hard time with this book. Its because it feels like there are 4 story's going on. They are NOT yet interlocking so there is to much space between the characters. We have the reports story, the archeologist, then Goodwin and Steinner. Plus all there other characters thrown in, its hard to keep track of who's who. For me they don't flow from one to the other.
Self centered, ignorant, so sure she is right when she is so wrong. Plus the obvious disdain of the author for the military makes this a dumb read. Only reason I will continue ( other than the fervent hope that Sarah dies a horrible death) is to see what happens when all gets turned on again by the pendant.
Unlike some reviews, I was thrilled to know the story continues! When there is a story this large, combining so many characters and places, it would be impossible to tie it all together in one or two books. If you love intrigue and mysteries mixed up in a large conspiracy ~ this is a series to enjoy.
Robert Storey continues the adventures of Sarah, Jason, and Trish as they search through the underground structures of the Anakim. Dr. Steiner, Col. Sampson, BIC, so, so very much to keep you entertained and occupied. Never a dull moment! So much to think about you won't want to stop reading. I can't wait to find out what's happening next. An exciting tale!
Vivid characters continue with the inter-twining paths, on the way to the next layer of this story "" onion". On to the next book, to see how well the author continues to weave the lives of these world-wide characters into an intricate pattern that will most certainly be a cataclysmic nail biter in the final copy of the series.
It took me awhile to finish this book because I was distracted by other projects; but once I sit down with it, I loved it. The characters are either easy to love or easy to hate. You can see their motivations and understand why each of them are doing the things that they are doing. i look forward to the 3rd book in the series. I received this book for free in exchange for a free review.
Great follow up. The story continues with further intrigue and international governmental conspiracies as well as revealing a subversive elite group which appears to be manipulating global manipulation of all levels of government including military control in all countries. The plot thickens and the story evolves very well. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I liked the first one, and this one even better. I hope the trend continues, with more archeological content and less running. I'm getting tired just reading it.
I have an awful headache right now so I'm not gonna say much. But this series has been wonderful! "Dark Descent" kept me on edge and up late at night many days because i couldn't put it down. I'm starting the third book now.
Great story from different perspectives and time. Well developed characters and technology advances. Starting vol three soon can't wait to continue the story
I could not put this book down! There is never a dull moment and the excitement builds with each of the characters. I cannot wait to get started on the next book.
This is my second and last Ancient Origins book. First book was interesting and kept me engaged but this 2nd book could be put down for days or week at a time. I cannot imagine two more books in the series. I'm done.
As gripping as the first book. I particularly liked the descriptions of the underground facility and the discoveries. As someone fascinated by ancient civilizations, I found this book very satisfying and believable.
British author uses too many British expressions especially when settings are in the U.S., like lorry instead of truck. Interesting enough to keep a person reading, but lengthy and involving lots of characters.
Very well thought out plot and well researched background. I am amazed at how well the author fills in potential plot holes! A few sections seem more drawn out than necessary but they didn't deter me from enjoying the story. This book will keep you wanting more.
Too much jumping around to different story lines felt a little disjointed. Nevertheless, the premise remains very interesting and I look forward to the next book in the series.
It was as good as it was tedious. I don't know what the light is, but it's exciting and mystifying. I hope the girl, Susan, is ok, but I'm not sure if she is or not. I can't wait to read the next one!
