Hannah wants to relocate herself and her cat, Jimi, to the countryside of Calgary. So, when she finds a turn-of-the-century home in a small town at a good price she jumps at the opportunity. Shortly after she moves in, strange noises, disturbances, and slamming doors hamper her efforts to make any changes in the house. Jimi starts acting odd, and the disturbances only increase in intensity. But, Hannah is no quitter, and by talking with long-time residents of her town, and with the help of a psychic, Hannah pieces together the tragic story of her resident ghost. By understanding why the ghost is unable to let go, Hannah comes to terms with her inability to let go of her own heartbreaking past. Will this new home and its non-corporeal occupant be exactly what Hannah needs to move on and find new love?
The story is compelling and the characters are very real and sympathetic. I really loved the setting of the old house, and the progress of the renovations/fixing-up done by the protagonist, freelance writer Hannah, nicely parallels the arc of the story. Jimi the cat has his own bits of 'dialogue' that are spot on.
I actually loved this book, it would be a great summer read- light but fun. It has some of my favorite elements, single woman with something to prove (to herself), a small town, a big snowstorm and a ghost!
I loved this book. Hannah is so spunky, and her cat Jimi is so sassy. Even the ghost is loveable! I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a feel-good story.
My first reaction to reading Ghosted by Judith Docken? I wanted time machines to be real so I could go back to the 1940s and make this marvelous book into a spooky, endearing, classic noir film starring the likes of Barbara Stanwyck. Romantically idealistic as that would be, this story truly belongs to our age and time, though the heart of its story spans back to early in the last century. I got everything I expected and wanted when I bought this debut novel, and one thing I did not expect . . . heart's healing.
I must admit that I nearly gave up on this book. I was about 30% into it and I was going to stop there. I thought I would read just one more chapter and if I was still not enamoured by it, then I would put it aside. I must say that after this point, the story really started to unfold and although predictable in some ways it was a really good read. I won't go into detail as I don't want to ruin the book for anyone. If you start to read it and don't get into it, remember to try the next chapter.
