In the 23rd Century in the galaxy of Sigma Kappa, Kim Fortune was the first surviving experimental enhanced human—a regenerate. Aged fifteen, he escaped the lab and years later, his failings as a regenerate and the suspicion of regular humans, leave him lonely and lacking in self-worth. Stranded on an abandoned planet, the arrival of a stricken ship and its crew give him hope that he may finally find what he always longed for—love.
Christian Novak is a successful regenerate with all the intended attributes—including lack of human emotion. Despite their immediate attraction to each other, Kim's failing confidence, and Christian's inability to empathize are a recipe for disaster. But war, imprisonment, and danger throw them together, and after each saves the other's life, their feelings begin to change.
Can a seemingly unsuitable pair ever find love, or is a future together destined to fail?
I currently live in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, having moved from my home town of Grimsby in 2010. I come from a family of writers, although my Mum, Nana and Auntie have all written poetry. For me, it has always been fiction that drew me.Louise Lyons introductory photograph
It started with Mum’s old manual typewriter when I was eight years old – a story about a little girl and a pony, which at the time was my dream. By the time I reached my early teens, I progressed to romance although I still only wrote for my own pleasure. This quickly developed into primarily gay romance stories and when I discovered the world of Fanfiction, I gradually built up a large following in some fandoms.
Knowing that other people liked my work drove me to follow a new dream – to become a published author – which has finally been realised with Dreamspinner Press.

I'm going to lay it on the line here. I'm a Trekkie. I've seen (bar one or two) every episode of every Star Trek incarnation and every film at least once. I can greet you and swear at you in Klingon. I made Bajoran hasperat once, and for a year, I was a ship's counsellor in STRPG. I find Roddenberry's utopian vision uplifting (ignoring the Cardassian/Bajoran situation and Ferengi commerce culture for the time being) and I think it's awesome when Star Trek inventions become scientific reality.
I've also seen Star Wars 4, 5, 6, 1 and 2. I love Red Dwarf, and I've watched more episodes than I care to admit of Blake's 7, Battlestar Galactica and Andromeda.
That is pretty much the extent of my engagement with space-based sci-fi (which probably has an official name, but you know what I mean). I've never read Star Trek novels, and I've read next to no other space-based science fiction books, for one reason: the names are STUPIDLY unpronouncable to me. If I can't say a character's name (or the name of their home world) in my head, then I can't connect with the character.
I've mentioned it on my blog before, but it's a deficit of the way I learned to read (whole words rather than phonemes and syllables), and there are still a lot of words I get wrong when I say them aloud: bombardier, Arkansas, Yosemite, archipelago, to list but a few.
All of this is the context for my reading of Regeneration, the recent release from Louise Lyons, and let me say how DELIGHTED I was to find that the main characters are called...
Kim Fortune Christian Novak
I can say BOTH of those. :)
I did have a bit of a problem with S.K.# for the planets, but I got the numbering straight fairly quickly. The name Immortasia is absolutely perfect for that nasty ole place, and Pardus is explained, so that made sense. I have no idea of the different planets' numbers now, but no matter. It's not necessary to understanding and enjoying the story. I got that Pardus is too hot, Immortasia is too cold and SK...the only one with three digits...is farther out and had lots of trees.
The world building is subtle and excellent. The caveat for that opinion is where I started. For anyone who has seen or read any popular space-based sci-fi, the principles of travel and the different kinds of habitable planet will be at once familiar, but there is enough explanation along the way for the complete sci-fi novice to pick it up, and the science fiction element isn't heavy-going. Regeneration is, for the most part, a character-driven story, where the two main characters happen to be enhanced humans in the Sigma Kappa galaxy (I'd expected a star system within the Milky Way galaxy, but I guess I was thinking too local).
The cast of characters is interesting, relatively diverse, and those of most significance are well developed. Kim Fortune starts off with an almost child-like innocence, and his biography before we pick up his story gives an insight into why this is. Christian Novak, on the other hand, has a very definite feel of the jaded rebel soldier. I'm particularly fond of Novak. He's a beefcake.
The writing is excellent, and the plot moves along at a good pace. I did experience a bit of a blip in this regard, which is related to my preferences as a reader. I found the shift in name use very off-putting. I understand why it happened, and it makes sense in context, but it did take me out of the story for a while. The other minor niggle I have - and I have absolutely no right to it, so I'm going to be honest, because it's a selling point for other readers - is that it's too 'MM Romance' for me, by which I mean the emphasis is on Kim and Novak's relationship and associated intimacy, which follows a fairly typical trajectory for the subgenre. There's nothing wrong with it - it's written very well - and the novel is clearly marked as Sci-fi/MM Romance, but I'd have been happy to see a few of the smaller 'mysteries' conclude and sacrifice some sexy time. Or both, maybe. Now I'm being greedy.
All in all, I really enjoyed this story. I read, write and edit mainly within contemporary subgenres, so it was a lovely and welcome change to read sci-fi, and well-written sci-fi at that, with characters whose names I could pronounce (++), natural world-building, strong female characters (for the most part) and a believable romance. I will most definitely be reading other stories by Louise Lyons. I'm still thinking now about Kim (trying to figure him out) and Novak (for far less innocent reasons - did I mention he's a beefcake?).

The first great sci-fi of the year for me, Regeneration had a little bit of everything and was entertaining from start to finish. The story revolves around Kim, a ‘failed’ regenerate who managed to escape a life of captivity only to find himself stranded on an inhospitable planet with dangerous animals that come out in the dark. Six months after his ship crashed, he finds himself with unexpected company as another ship suffers the same fate; among those now stuck with him is Christian Novak, a regenerate soldier that, after defecting, has been captured and was being taken back to undergo ‘modification’. The attraction between the two is near instantaneous but there’s one major problem; regenerates have been made to have no emotions but Kim is more human than expected and has all the feelings to go with that humanity. He’s sure Christian wants to get him into bed but Kim wants something he’s only ever dreamed about: love.
Ah, this story was just so good! All of the characters were well flushed out and the descriptions given by the author made it super easy to envision everything that Kim was seeing and experiencing. A lot of things happened in the book but it all felt like a natural progression instead of a bunch of random events stuck together to provide action and I really appreciated that; the story just flowed beautifully and I was swept up into it. Besides the great story, there was a good amount of character development for both Kim and Christian; Kim began thinking of himself as something other than a failure and Christian discovered that regardless of how he was made, he was capable of change. Reading about both men individually was almost as satisfying as watching their relationship develop and evolve.
This was just a completely satisfying read from start to finish; I was completely engrossed in it from the beginning and the ending was just perfect. I really have no complaints! If you enjoy science fiction and want something that’s more story driven with a slow burn romance, I highly recommend you check this one out. This was my first story by this author and it most definitely won’t be my last!
This book had a great start! It really grabbed my attention. It's a futuristic story which is always fascinating. What our future holds is a huge mystery. It's also a romance and I love a good romance!
Kim Fortune is the main character. His own perception of himself are that of a flawed and failed individual. Only when he interacts with others does he see that view is totally one-sided. I felt by making Kim this way we, the reader, really empathized with him. We are our own worst critics. Sometimes we're shocked when someone tells us they like something about us. So, I at least was able to understand Kim this way.
There's a massive amount of action, drama, and suspense. When they crash, to when Christian rescues Kim, and then them getting to back to earth. It's an adventure that's filled with so many wonderful things.
Kim is the type of character who stays with you after you're finished reading. Christian is wonderful too and I love him buth there's usually always one characteryou favor and for me that was Kim.
The writing flowed, it was a quick read and only because you don't want to put it down and then the next thing you know, you're done! It's a great book for the sci-fi romance fan.
Futuristic sci-fi romance is something that I don’t read very often, but when I read the synopsis for this book my interest was quickly piqued. I’m really glad I decided to read it, because it has the perfect blend of action, drama and romance and turned out to be pretty exciting!
Kim Fortune is an amazing main character. He sees himself as a failed experiment, though once he starts interacting with the others he comes into contact with he starts to see that most people don’t see him that way. I thought he was brave and someone who would do what was needed to survive. Christian Novak-I loved his strength and protective nature, and his determination to get back to Kim no matter what. The two of them together are hot and sensual, and they fit perfectly.
There was plenty of excitement from the moment Christian’s group crashes on the planet on which Kim has been marooned-from the panther-like beasts who hunt them to another crash on a hostile planet to Christian’s daring rescue of Kim to their journey to Earth…never a dull moment and I was constantly glued to my screen. There’s also a great group of supporting characters who helped add depth to the story. My favorites were Belle and Rickson for the unconditional support they gave Kim as well as Christian.
The story flowed nicely, and all of the characters contributed to the overall story. I found myself quite invested in Kim’s life and the outcome of his relationship with Christian. I absolutely loved the way the story ended!
Regeneration was a 4.5-star read for me, and I already know I’ll be re-reading this one in the future. I’m hoping the author will be writing more in the sci-fi romance genre because I thought this one was an excellent read. I’d recommend this story to any M/M sci-fi romance fan, it’s an exciting story that will definitely keep your attention. This book is for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.
DNF 45%. It's not a bad book, a little bland. I'm just bored. I don't know why, honestly. I like MM sci-fi. But I'm just not hooked into this, I guess? I regret buying it, but maybe I'll return to it sometime. For now, I have more entertaining books on my list.
The first chunk of this book really pulled me into the situation. Throughout the book, Lyons takes pains to build a world that the reader can clearly picture. I found this most successfully executed in the feline-infested planet. We are introduced to Kim Fortune as the narrator (first person) and get a brief introduction to the hostile environment where he’s been existing solo before the supporting cast/love interest are introduced. I also appreciated that we get to see these principle characters all living and interacting in this same environment before the plot starts heading off into space adventure territory.
Many aspects of the book serve a rather utilitarian function. Most of the supporting cast interacted with the principles in a pretty stilted manner; I never got a clear sense that the main characters were interacting on a personal level with the supporting characters. Also, there are a few elements that come across like they were purely for convenience. Take, for example, the buildings Kim and the others take cover in while the deadly felines are out and about. These structures are decades old, yet still function with power and water and all the basics of life support as if they’d never been abandoned. Similarly, the science-y bits aren’t really expounded on…the ships they zip around galaxies on are powered by special lasers and the human/regen characters spend the decades of travel time suspended in “cryo.” That is to say, they have cryogenic capabilities so that they will not age or anything during the long hauls between galaxies. There is precious little to substantiate how/why these traveling capabilities are even possible (there are “power cells” that power the ships), let alone necessary (are people fleeing alien attacks, intergalactic war, interdemensional trade? We don’t know.). This lack of details makes it more like a science fantasy rather than science fiction in the true sense. Even so, I was mostly okay with that because I’m reading for the romance.
Wow, what some people have to go through in order to be able to find the first sort of happiness in this book was beyond words.
Kim is a first born regenerate. He is the only one who lives and after the fact he was the only one who survived after the crew he was on a ship with all slowly started to die after they crash landed on some planet with some killer cats.
Kim never expected six months after the crash to have another ship crash and for the crew to survive. Even more unexpected was the feelings that was envoked in him the moment he laid eyes on the man that was in custody of the crew that crashed.
Chris is a regenerate soldier that escaped the prison he was in only to be caught and captured and the crash land on the horrible planet they landed on. The only plus was the man There by the name of Kim. There was definitely some sexual tension between the two men but the circumstances sourounding them did not allow time to explore it.
These two men went through hell to see if things could go anywhere between them. They crashed landed on the planet that Chris had escaped prison from only to be imprisoned there again. Then once there Kim insured Manuel labor, got into a fight protecting one of the other crew members, sent to the cells for fighters to beg and pled to have the woman of their crew to be let go in return for him helping to create much needed medicines.
It did not seem these two men was ever going to end up together but once they did, it once again got off to a rough start for them again.
Things did not seem like they would ever work for these two. The question was would Chris end up sticking around long enough for them to see how things could turn out between them or not?
This was a hugely adventurous read. At every turn something bigger was happening then the last and things just did not seem like they was going to line up and work out for these two men. I really enjoyed this read. I loved hat things was not perfect between them and hat they had to fight for what they both wanted. It made this science fiction story seem more of a reality. Very good read!!!
Was given this galley copy for free for an open and honest review
This is a terrific crossover romance/science fiction short novel. The world-building is outstanding. There are no lengthy descriptions. Everything is woven into the plot, and we're given an understanding through Kim's eyes of what his world is like. From the beginning, I had a good sense of what was going on.
Although there are a few ways in which I think Kim in particular plays into some common tropes, I still found the storyline compelling. What I loved is that they are both often more human than the actual humans around them. Both Kim and Novak are willing to do what they have to for survival, and for each other. At the same time, they each have regrets, and they are not as devoid of emotions as their creators intended.
Beyond that, it's difficult to give much more information because so much happens in such a small amount of time. I found the pacing good and the characters intriguing and well-drawn. The whole novel works well as both science fiction and romance independently, and they're connected together perfectly, which is no small feat. Fans of both genres should find something to enjoy here. Personally, I would love to read more in this world because it's fascinating. I can imagine Kim and Novak aren't the only ones with a story to tell.
For excellent world-building, characters to root for, and largely good storytelling, this gets 4 stars.
WOW! I just had to start by throwing that out there. I have been a sic-fi fan since I first saw Star Wars when I was 4 years old in 1977 so as you can imagine I've seen and read many science fiction plots in the years since. It isn't easy to tell a romance story in science fiction setting and pull it off with amazing heart, well Louise Lyons has done just that with Regeneration. Kim Fortune worms his way into your heart with his lonely soul, he may be a bit naive when it comes to certain things but he's always genuine. When Novak crashes into his life, nothing will ever be the same for either of them.
Not a lot I can say without revealing too much but I will say I love how the technology and science in Regeneration may not be doable in our lifetime but it certainly is a believable progression given the future time frame. Add unlikely romance into the possibility that one day it just may be the world our future generations live in and you have a story that really sucks you in and sticks with you. Once I started I just couldn't put it down, I know that may sound cliche but it's no less true. Prepare yourself to get lost in Kim & Novak's tale.
Louise Lyons is a new author for me and I will definitely be reading more! Although I found the writing quite dry to start with, it quickly fell into a pleasing rhythm that fit the locations and atmosphere of the book.
The characters were well portrayed and really enjoyed reading about them. The science fiction and world building was great and imaginative. The romance had its moments and although I didn’t always feel there was enough to get to I Love You I definitely bought the attraction. I appreciated the epilogue to show how things were working out.
If you are a fan of sci-fi, especially space fearing people and different planets, then this is definitely worth checking out!
