The Mayor of the little town of Vinice is found dead in his own wine cellar on his 57th birthday. Did he die of natural causes, as the forensic surgeon suggests, or has his corrupt past caught up with him at last? Tensions between the two detectives sent round to investigate are not helping matters, nor is the keenness of just about everyone else involved in the case to let sleeping dogs lie.
Set in Southern Moravia in the heart of Czech wine-growing country, this murder mystery explores the dark secrets of a community that still carries the scars of the Nazi and Communist eras within living memory. Here, guilt and innocence can be dangerously intertwined. Human beings and reputations can be trashed in the blink of an eye and ends may still be seen as justifying the means.
