Yep. That's an “s.” There are two of us!
We’re East coast girls separated by Long Island Sound who met in Physician Assistant School and have been besties ever since. We can safely say that thirteen miles of water does not get in the way because we talk or text, no exaggeration, at least 150 times a day. No, really, we do—about everything and nothing. Shockingly, we never (we mean never) run out of things to say. Umm, ever. We definitely laugh A LOT and we’re a tad sarcastic. And if we’re being totally honest, one or two people might have, on occasion, used our names and ‘dramatic’ in the same sentence. But it’s hard to trust the sources since they married us.

It only took twelve years, two husbands, five kids, two dogs, and a two-week vacation in Cape Cod later to decide the romance world needed a splash of medicine. Write what you know.
So you can easily find us at 4 o'clock on Bank Street beach with a glass of cold Prosecco brainstorming. And guaranteed if we bump into you, literally, it’s only because our iPhones are glued to our hands (totally out of our control) either writing or editing our next novel (and yes, it is possible to do from your iPhone, we mastered it … damn those straight quotations).

When we are not working on our book or reading the latest angsty romance on our kindles, you basically name it and we have it going on. Soccer, lacrosse, golf, swimming, dance, gymnastics, football, chess, baseball, basketball, skiing, ice skating, school, homework, and more school.
Oh yeah, did we forget to mention our careers in medicine?

Needless to say, we realized fast that something had to go, so we opted for sleep. It’s completely overrated (yet so AMAZING) and delirium makes everything funnier. Good thing we share a brain and can pretty much complete each other’s sentences (definitely weird, we know), otherwise it might have taken us two years to write Beautifully Awake rather than one.

So that’s our story, who we are … just add AUTHORS to the list!

Okay, I get it. I'd been a scrub nurse in the OR for years. I get how it's like to admire a surgeon especially with his dexterity while operating. But guess what? The heroine was not a nurse. She's a case manager/social worker. Then, what the heck was she doing sitting so pretty inside the OR while there was an ongoing operation? I know, I know... The neurosurgeon/boss/hero wanted her there. Why? Well, according to him he'd be distracted wondering what she was doing, blah, blah, blah... if she'd be away from him even for a second (they've just known each other for a few days) and he didn't care about hospital policy not allowing her there... Ooookay... Well, what about medical ethics, Mr. Surgeon? That was invasion of the patient's privacy among other things!

So, she was there listening to music and admiring him while he’s drilling a skull and seeing some parts of the brain
(not to mention the presence of blood), then why did it feel like she’s just watching a Lifestyle Network?... I know it's just a book... It's not real... So, moving forward...

Hmmm... What can I say? The plot caught me. But that's about it. It was insta-lust and insta-love (though they refused to admit it yet, it already felt that way). I didn't even get their connection... They were attracted but the intensity was too much! I was speechless... I wanted to rant... I've highlighted so many things on the book... But nevermind... It's a waste of time...

Still, I need to say these...
1. It was cheezy. And it was like the lines were well thought out separately but when being put in the whole conversation, they seemed off like they're not suited to be there.
2. It's too damn LONG!
(I think I’m having another headache)
3. Their issues (which I kind of read before) had no big impact. I was finally relieved that they were revealed.
4. The epilogue was the weirdest epilogue I've ever read...
5. I've rated it 2 stars, the additional 1-point was for the steam factor. I admit it was pretty HOT! But sadly, it doesn't make up a story.

And hey!... Have you read the Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day? Yes? No? Well, read that... because... Beautifully Awake is the copycat version...

TRUTH: Solid 4 Stars!!

Hmm....the more I think about this one, the more I think I liked it. Dr. Chase Colton has popped in to my head a few times since finishing this book...I think that has to say something right!?!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED that this took place in a hospital! Score one for the Riley Mackenzie duo!!! Those were my favorite scenes. The surgeries, the interactions with the other doctors. All of it--LOVED it!!!

Lili is sleep running. She's running from her past. She's running from life. She's just running. No feelings. No emotions. Just existing. Until she meets Chase.

"I didn't want to run away from any more of my life. I just wanted to feel. If that meant not always feeling happy, not always feeling comfortable, if it meant suffering through times of sadness and headache, then I was in. I wanted all in. If love was my only constant, then nothing else mattered."

Chase, Chase, Chase......the Doctor of ALL things! I don't even no which persona was my favorite. It's a toss-up between Dr Intensity, Dr Dominant, Dr Sweet and Dr Sex.

Lili is a case manager at the hospital. Her lastest rotation is with none other than the new doctor in town--Dr Chase Colton. Chase was Dr HOT. Wowzer!

So we know Lili is running from something from her past. Well it turns out the good Doc is too. And while they are both hesitant to open up to each other about their pasts--Lili's is exposed during an unfortunate turn of events. It turns out Lili's past hits pretty close to home for Chase.

Things between Chase and Lili move pretty quickly, but it honestly didn't feel like insta-love really IMO. Don't ask me why...I loved all of the supporting characters--Asher from Chase's side (he MUST have his own book) and Guy, Lee, Kate and Sierra from Lili's side. Sierra was an awesome BFF!

My only real complaint about this book would be the length. I felt it was a tad too long and dragged a bit in the middle. It picked back up in the end--and I must say....I DID NOT see that coming. And I totally should have!!! I also felt like a few things went unanswered.

Overall, I thought this was a great debut from the Riley Mackenzie duo! A great story of two people running from their pasts....that have closed themselves off to others....only to find peace and comfort in each other.

"You woke me up, Chase. You brought color back to my life. The only time I ever want to see grey again is when I’m looking in your eyes."

PS--This was a standalone. And it was HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

"Please trust me enough to show me beneath your beautiful."

TRUTH...This book is 341 pages and it's kinda of 200 pages story.

I went from 4 1/2 Star loving this book, to skimming by 78 percent or so, to back in it for the exciting ending. I think after all secrets revealed (which were well done), I kinda was like...okay what's next.

Here's an example:

"Maybe he was trying to tell me my nails sucked. They did. My nervous habit wreaked havoc on my cuticles. I stood in the nail station, staring at the rainbow colors in front of me."

Yeah...I just wanted the pace to pick back up because honestly, ALL the hospital scenes were EXCELLENT! Seriously, they were very cool!

The ending did pick up the pace and I was very happy with where our couple was by the end of the story. However, Sierra and Dodd, I wish there was a little bit of a completed scene for them.

Character wise, Lili and Dr. Sexy...Chase Colton were wonderful. Sierra the best friend was absolutely HYSTERICAL! Guy and Asher where very intriguing and I'm hoping that they may get their own books at some point in the future.

Overall, I think the author did a good job with her debut novel, the sex scenes were HOT and the hospital scenes were mesmerizing.

"Chase...those demons don't have to be fought anymore. Let's keep them asleep...we'll stay awake..together."

A moving story of true love !

Riley Mackenzie is absolutely amazing and so is Beautifully Awake. When I first read this book years ago, Lili and Chase won my heart over from the very first scene and my love for them both is stronger than ever. This story is packed with all the feels and it delivers the emotional punch that makes a good book GREAT. 🔥❤️

"I didn't want to run away from any more of my life. I just wanted to feel. If that meant not always feeling happy, not always feeling comfortable, if it meant suffering through times of sadness and headache, then I was in. I wanted all in. If love was my only constant, then nothing else mattered." -Lili

“When all I saw was darkness, when I thought there was nothing left but pitch black, your shining blue eyes rescued me from that hell. I don’t deserve you, baby, not for one fucking second, but the fact that you want me for who I am, the fact that you love me, makes me actually believe that one day I might forgive myself.” - Chase

Our connection seared my soul. If there was a doubt about how I felt about this man, it was erased. I love him. Madly and deeply. All of him, even the fucked up parts.

This book was a shot in the dark for me. I didn't really know too much about it, but I was getting a little bored with the same old characters and this seemed to have something different yet still have some elements that I enjoy.

Rockstar, fighter, athlete, CEO...repeat. Yes, I like these types of characters, but after a while, seen it, read it, ready for something fresh. This book interested me because it takes place in a hospital setting, it seemed to have a hot, tortured, possessive and jealous alpha Hero (Who doesn't love a classic tortured alpha male? Tell me!) and a smart, mature career woman dealing with her own demons. It sounded refreshingly different with strong, intelligent characters and some explosive steam. Did the book deliver that?

Hell, YES!

I was so impressed with this dynamic duo's debut book! Kudos to these two talented authors. Finally! Something I could wholeheartedly sink fully into and not come up for air until I was finished. It grabbed me, pulled me in, and brought me on a fast, sexy ride with a dash of angst and a pinch of suspense thrown in the end. And let me tell you, the sexual chemistry was nothing to scoff at between these two. Seriously? Talk about nuclear. They didn't just do hard and fast. They did soft and sweet to perfection as well. I was loving every minute of it.

"Watching you come was the sexiest thing I have ever seen. His loss was my honor. I can't wait to put that look on your beautiful face and hear you scream my name again. I'm giving you fair warning-you can retire your vibrator, baby, because I don't share."

He made love to me.
Soft and sweet.
Hands entwined above our heads, stomach to stomach, tongue cherishing tongue. Every delicious push...every kiss, spoke silent novels. As broken as I was...as tormented as his intense eyes said he was...
We were perfect.
No apologies. No explanations.
Just us. Perfection.

This book is about Lili and Chase, a case manager and the Chief Neurosurgeon at Philadelphia Hospital. They both are dealing with issues from their past but Lili is completely sweet, soft, and loving despite having some horrible things happen in her life. That's what I like about her so much. She didn't become hardened, bitter, or angry. She's still looking out for everyone else and retained her loving attitude. Chase, on the other hand, is a force to be reckoned with. His past has completely skewed his personality into a completely cold, harsh, and intimidating figure. Most people avoid him due to his less than perfect people skills. It seems as if these two would have a huge problem connecting. But they see more deeply in each other what others can't see. The pain they bury every day and the need to forget.

Chase starts showing glimpses of a tender, caring, and broken side of himself and she's pulled even deeper into his spell. While they are struggling with admitting their feelings, Chase pretty much rips apart any guy who flirts, touches, or looks at her the wrong way. Jealous much? Whether he wanted to admit it or not, she was his from the moment their eyes first met.

"Blue, baby. I couldn't walk away now if I tried. You're mine. Hear me? Mine....say it." Even in the darkness of the bedroom his eyes were as passionate as his words.
"Yours."
"Look at me." (...)"I know I don't deserve you. But I won't share. I can't. I'm not built that way. Not any of you. You're mine, baby."

They both have to get past their injured hearts, broken trust, and breakthrough the numbness they've been living with in order to survive. On the outside, they seem put together and functioning but underneath the surface they are just "sleep running". And they need to wake up. Wake each other up.

"I don't want to run anymore, I'm just so tired of sleep running." It was all I could say. It was true. I was tired of running. Tired. I wanted to stop. I wanted to stay awake. I didn't want to run away from any more of my life. I just wanted to feel."

I loved this book for all it's glorious passion, it's crazy sexy alpha doctor, sweet and funny heroine, the surprise at the end...the fabulous secondary characters who were hilarious, protective, and everything you'd want in a friend. There's so much to love-it was one of those books that made me slightly giddy. Read this book! It's a beauty.

True story.

WOW! Just Awesome!

Finally I reached out and bruised the hair from those familiar eyes, the mirror reflection of my own. You were awake. Your eyes were open. But the light was gone. There was nothing but darkness. Three years of complete emptiness.

It was time to close your eyes.

TRUTH...

The best feeling ever, finding a new Author, in this case, Authors. Falling absolutely in love with their writing and then having the pleasure to tell you all about this wonderful story.

Lili Porter is Sleep Running...

It's Lili's safe haven. Her time to heal. For the last three years Lili has been drifting, emotionless and colourless. Terrified of waking up to life and running away from a past to protect herself at all costs. Until Dr Chase Colton crushes her walls and makes her feel safe again, introducing her to honest Intimacy, Truth and Love.

Dr Chase Colton, Chief or Neurosurgery at Philadelphia Hospital.
Dr Sexy. Dr Compassionate. Dr Jackass. Dr Affectionate. Dr Dreamy. Dr Bossy. Dr Stubborn. Dr Possessive. Dr Sweet. You name it.

Lili is a case worker at the same hospital and finds herself on rotation with the new head of Surgery.
After a few rough starts, Chase and Lili, can't keep away from each other. Dr Intensity has a power over her. She accepts it as what it is, knowing the man has the ability to possibly awaken her but can also break her down.

Chase has his own deep dark secrets that leaves you intrigued to know why Dr Mystery is the way he is. He runs hot and cold. Hard and soft. But there is no denying the steaming chemistry between them.

"You come first, or we come together…. Understand?" It wasn't a question. It was an order. And probably the sexiest thing I ever hear. "Answer me, Blue." The heat from his breath against my sex almost sent me over the edge.

My lips released him just long enough to pant, "Understand."

They were on fire. Holy shit the sex was freaking OFF the Charts. Chase is Bossy and Dominate but in a soft sexy way.

I broke our kiss, unable to stop my cry. My head fell back with the sudden intrusion, and I was rocked deep to my core. This felt good. "Blue, you're so wet for me. So tight. I want to be inside you so bad."

As their relationship progresses, Lili's past comes out and leaves you hurting for the poor girl. With all her truths out, her biggest fear of losing Chase from it all comes crashing true. Chase is still a mystery, he leaves you craving for the truth. His past is so dark, you really can't guess it. But when the mystery of his darkness comes to light… Let me just safe, FUCK! Heart and soul breaking.

It's like you think you know where it's going, where it could possibly go, but what you get is a big kick in the gut, the wind knocked out of you and you're hopeless to the pain he holds on to.

Can they both find their light? Will each other be enough for what they each need? Will Chase find his Truth?

I didn't want to run away from any more of my life. I just wanted to feel. If that meant not always feeling happy, not always feeling comfortable, if it meant suffering through times of sadness and headache, then I was in. I wanted all in. If love was my only constant, then nothing else mattered.

This was Brilliant. It had everything you could ever want.

A fun sassy best friend.

"Fine you're no fun, but if the are any hotties on your team this month, I'm gonna want details. Your eyes still work, right? Even if you vagina's sealed shut by now."

A Tortured hero, who at time seriously melted my heart.

'And I told you, baby, you never have to thank me. I would feed your entire family every meal for the next twenty years to see that smile on your face."

Then there were the sexy, oh god it's so hot in here moments…. The shower scene.. HOTTEST SCENE ever! That shit is hot. TRUTH

He wrapped his fingers around his hard shaft and squeezed. My mouth went dry; any and all moisture drenched my thong. "My girl likes to watch?" He stroked his cock, with more force than I ever imagined using. It was the hottest moment Ever.

A funny as all hell, not at all annoying, strong an amazing Heroine.

This was part of the movie where you pushed stop or fast-forward, because it was just that embarrassing it made you stomach hurt. Pull. It. Together. There was only one possible explanation: I was having a full-out stroke.

With an amazing cast of Dr's, Nurses and Interns…. It was your favourite romance, with the hottest sexy times, sizzling chemistry and fun, hilarious banter mixed in with an episode of Grey's Anatomy all in one!

Freaking LOVE the Cover! First thing I thought when I found this.

I loved Loved loved that he called her Blue, love awesome nicknames. TOTAL Swoon right there.
I loved Ash. Seriously that man needs his own book. STAT
I loved the medical talk, the scenes, everything. I haven't read anything like it. It was refreshing to have it set in that background.
I loved their Truths. It was real and raw and heartbreaking but so beautiful.
I loved the mystery. The suspense. My chest was pounding the last 10% of the book! INTENSE!

You must grab this one ASAP. You will not want to miss this one.

Riley Mackenzie are 2 best friend Authors that have done a brilliant job on their Debut. Can not fault one thing. Bravo Ladies, You rock!

6 stars!

I am at this point of my reading life where contemporary romance is just a pleasure break in between fantasy books. BUT, for me, this book is like second coming... of contemporaries.

The writing is superb, every sentence is full of wit. The sense of humour is unbelievable. And the spark between our main characters is not only flying, it's soaring! Plotwise, it's very unique and the twists are jaw-dropping!

Dude, I have never read of characters more damaged than our main protagonists, Lili and Chase. Their pasts were so painful and tragic and all I want is to wrap them in my cocoon of love. My heart aches for them that's why I am more than ecstatic to watch them fix each other in the most heartwarming and heart-wrenching way. If that even make sense.

I am positive that this is only my second book about a doctor protagonist. What's up with that? Why aren't there many books about (hot) doctors? It's unfair. I am also positive the world is deprived of it. I sure am!

This book in my mind was going be a stellar, but unfortunately everything took a turn and I lost interest!!! The only reason I tried was because of hottie Dr Chase Colton!!!

 photo 37_1746_20100416162924_vogel.jpg

Dr Chase Colton is moody and bossy Doctor, and immediately has my attention! I love every single page of this book until 22% and then BAM!!! All gone!
That hot moody and bossy Doctor is gone and becomes too mushy!!! Wait, y did that?

 photo tumblr_moaafoAAhX1ss4yjno1_500.gif

Well, there were enters Lili, the case manager under him. They fall in love! Everything moved bloody too quick and you didn't get a chance to feel their relationship, their UST an their intensity!

Cut to chase, the past that they were hidden were kinda cheesy and you will roughly be able to predict it!

Anyway, if you are in mood for hot doctor, pick up Chase!!

The blurb on top of that, totally didn't sync with their book!! She hates rain...... hmmmm there was only rain scene and she loved it! GRRRRR Another part that ticked me off, her in OR!!!!Does it happen in RL??? It is like having a family member stand-by in!

10 Sizzling BURNING THE PAGES Hearts for Heat!!

OH where do I start? What a freaking ride! Like from the first encounter this couple exploded with chemistry. Chase reacted with such intensity to Lili ..his "Blue" . At first I was like ..does he hate her? But then BAM to the BAM (Trademarked by Tara) ..this book burned up my Kindle. This guy had it all. All my ✓ boxes! Dirty Talker? OMG like freaking FILTHY and I LOVED EVERY DIRTY WORD HE SAID!

He was Arrogant, Cocky, Jealous..oh boy super Possessive. Hell forget burning your bra...just let him do what he freaking wants all day long!
“That’s four. I’ll surprise you for five, but number six, I’m back inside.”
That's right..counting O's ..hot hot hot.

So you get this book was hot right?
That's not the part that won me over. ( Ok so yea it had a big part OK? I mean Sizzling Pages...yea I like it hot) ..but really that wasn't the whole reason.
This story had such emotional freaking depth. I mean these two characters lived through pure and utter hell in their pasts. Things that would normally destroy most people. They didn't stay down. Both lead lives that helped people..even though they were hiding or "sleep walking" through life.. Two damaged souls crashing into each other and neither would ever be the same again.

"Fifteen fucking years I slept through life. Now I’m fucking living it, wide awake.” Chase

There was a time when I wanted to beat the hell out of Chase but when all the secrets and past "truth" came out, all I could do was just cry. My heart broke for both of them.
These two finally gave in and gosh the love that they shared was so beautiful.

I loved the other characters in this book. Lili's BFF Sierra was a freaking RIOT ..she cracked me up. Then Asher he was swoonalishish! I can't wait for his book and YEP I called it..I am telling you him and Kate ..I just know it!
I really want a Guy book too! Like Guy and those dimples..yum!
The authors Riley MacKenzie definitely have a knack for writing scenes with so many emotions. I look forward to more from them. I swooned, laughed, yelled and cried during this book and I would not change one moment of any of those emotions. The only thing I'd love is ..by some miracle to be able to read the deleted scenes in the epilogue. Yep I read the acknowledgments and ladies. GIMMEE!! PLEASE!!! I want more!! More Chase..gosh his POV was the icing on the HEA cupcake!!
Ok needless to say I found this book when I needed it the most. Hot scenes, passionate beautiful love story and one sizzling read that will stay with me quite some time.
Read this book!

I loved the crap out of this book Truth

The writing is great, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking. It made me laugh and cry. It is all kinds of fabulous.

Chase was... well, let's just say I saw shades of Jessie Ward in his over the top possessive alpha male "i-will-do-anything-to protect-and care-for-my-woman" attitude. He wasn't quite as over the top - but he was certainly Dr. Bossy, Dr. Possessive, and Dr. Jealous with some Dr. Playful and Dr. Sweet mixed in.

I really liked Lili too. She was damaged, but still so strong. There were no unnecessary wining or histrionics for this heroine.

The cast of secondary characters was fabulous, and I'm hoping for several of them to get their own stories. Sierra was the perfect BFF, and I just loved her to pieces.

So, given all this fabulousness, why only four stars? Two sticking points for me one major, one minor. 1) dear god save me from insta love!!!!!! Seriously, basically they meet and the next day he's so obsessed with her he needs her in his OR with him so he can concentrate and not worry/wonder about here. While the actual "I love you's " took a bit - after they first got together it was sex to basically we are moving in together and spending every moment together. It just felt VERY fast - so it was hard to have faith in the relationship. I got past it - because of all the before mentions wonderfulness - but it did mar it a bit. 2) WTF was with the whole making her be in the OR thing? That's not normal right? It just seemed really out of place and way beyond what would be tolerated in a professional setting. I could be wrong since I'm not in the medical field - and that could be normal - but I don't think so.

All that said - it's a huge winner, and I can't wait for more from these authors!!

This book started off really refreshing in a hospital setting. Moody brain surgeon Doctor Chase and Lil work together at the hospital.

The writing style grabbed me. I loved Chase pre-20%. Sierra (the BFF) gave the story some light moments and I enjoyed the hospital scenes.

You're eyes still work, right? Even if your vagina's sealed shut by now

However, I thought their relationship was on fast forward, I wanted a bit more dragged out sexual tension at the beginning. Ironically towards the end I felt it could have been cut short. Also, the Dr Moody/Dr Sexy/Dr Possessive references bugged me.

This was a good start to the series and I can see potential in the series getting better. If you are looking for something a bit different, plenty of sexy time and a hawt moody doctor, this would be a great choice.

Ada- ah the epilogue thanks for the recommendation hun x

Truth....Beautifully Awake is a must read by all.

These two authors did an amazing job of bringing us one hell of a debut novel. I for one can not wait for book #2 in this series. You Will love Chase and his Blue!!! I LOVED this story. The characters where real, I felt like I was right there alongside the character's throughout the whole story.

Lili Porter is sleep running. It is her safe place. After suffering a terrible past, she moves through her days in the motions but that is all. I Loved Lili she was fun, playful , caring, and selfless. After choosing to start fresh she moves to another state and gets a job in a new hospital as a Case Manager. This is where she meets Chase Chief of Neurosurgery as Philadelphia Hospital.

Dr. Chase Colton, sexy, compassionate, dominate, bossy. He has his own mystery past burdened with guilt and demons.
After a couple rough situations Lili and Chase find themselves not being able to stay away from each other. The more time they spend together the closer they become.

Chase slowly starts to break down Lili's walls and you truly feel sad for her and all she has been through. Chase shows her what true love and intimacy is all about and she starts to feel a safe haven within Chase. When the Mystery of Chase's own life comes to light I was shocked. I was heartbroken.

The Epilogue HOLY HELL !!!! The author's killed me with that I was like WTH!!! What are you doing to me?

Can they together find their light? Can they both help to mend each other and move forward?

Definitely a must read for everyone. I would recommend this book to everyone !!!!!!

I didn't want to run away from any more of my life. I just wanted to feel. If that meant not always feeling happy, not always feeling comfortable, if it meant suffering through times of sadness and headache, then I was in. I wanted all in. If love was my only constant, then nothing else mattered.

Diagnosis: Sleep-running
Treatment: Truth
Prognosis: Beautifully Awake

Lili Porter hates the rain. Bad things happen in the rain. As a small town social worker dedicated to protecting children, she is forced to start over to escape her rural disaster. Determined to follow her father’s advice—head up and chin high—Lili finds herself in a new city, taking on a new system, this time healthcare. In doing so, she gets something she never expected, an intimate behind-the-scenes look at life in the hospital.

Lili learns that a surgeon’s hands have the power to heal more than physical wounds. And a prescription for truth can cure three years of sleep running and leave you beautifully awake.

Well I finished this last night and have been pondering what to write as I'm a little all over the place with it. This is Riley Mackenzie's ("Mackenzie") debut novel and as such it's a well-written story of love between two likeable protagonists, Chase and Lili; a story that includes an array of supporting characters. The author does such an amazing job of creating sexual heat between Chase and Lili, not to mention the steamy sexual escapades between the two, all of which is off-the-charts hot, that it's hard to believe this is Mackenzie's debut novel.

While I refer to "Beautifully Awake" as well-written in the above-written paragraph, I also refer to her style of writing. That being said, there were many aspects of the novel that had me rolling my eye-balls into the back of the head, shaking my head, and thinking WTF as some things just didn't make sense or seem plausible to make the overall story work. Lili is a case worker for the hospital. Instead of doing her job, Chase has her in his OR for the entire duration of the surgery (6, 7 hours) doing what should be performed by one of the attending doctors or nurses. This is absolutely ridiculous and absurd, not to mention totally unbelievable. Considering that Chase and Lili were always away on the same days, that Chase would call into the hospital to tell them that Lily wouldn't be coming in, it's hard to believe that no one caught on to their relationship. You'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to notice. I also didn't understand why Lily thought going back home to testify in a past case would be a simple task, especially since she has first-hand knowledge of who the defence lawyer is and how he operates. The entire scene was absurd. As for Chase, even though likeable (sometimes), there were times that he really aggravated the shit out of me. The fact that he never talked about anything in his personal life but expected to know everything about Lily was not only selfish but arrogant as well. No smart woman would put up with that shit. He leaves her for an entire week when she really needs him, then tells her why only to have Lili feel like she's at fault. Excuse me? WTF?

As for the hospital scene in the Epilogue, I don't know if the author forgot a piece of info or did it on purpose or what, but after reading it five fucking times I still had no idea what to make of it.

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!

""CODE BLUE MRI!"

My feet took off and I sprinted down the hall. I pushed past half the twenty person code team to get in the fucking room. My feet felt like fucking lead. Like I just got slathered in cement. Her naked breasts bounced with every forceful thrust; her ribs cracked with each chest compression. The air bag they used to pump oxygen into her lungs blocked my view of her face. It was a clip from a horror movie.

"Hold compression!" someone screamed over the commotion. Everyone froze and looked.

She was lying there motionless and … alone. I broke through the cement. She needed me. She wasn't going to be alone. I wasn't leaving her alone. I rushed to the head of the bed. Finally seeing her eyes, I was consumed by an overwhelming sense of peace. Honest and pure peace, heaven.

"I’m calling it… time of death 2:57 PM."

The dominant voice stopped the chatter. He was calling it. It was over. I closed her lifeless eyes. I walked out of the room. When I reached an empty hallway, I bent over and fought for more oxygen. Thank fucking god, I breathed.

"Chase, oh shit. Are you okay? I thought it was Lili too, man.""

Needless to say it wasn't Lili who died, so I have to ask WTF?! I know the author was trying to create suspense but it backfired. To say it was poorly executed is an understatement.

One last thing that needs mentioning, the book is over 100 pages TOO LONG! I didn't think it would ever end.

So why three stars? It's still pretty good for a debut novel (and it's a stand-alone), plus the chemistry and (mild) erotic sexcapades was sizzling hot. Do I plan to read the second novel in the series? Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

I've been giving some more thought to rationalizing my rating system having read so many good books, what makes a 5 star read? Here are my must haves and how they relate to this amazing debut novel:

- Memorable dialog: From sweet, "Baby, I want to sleep with you. This isn't about sex. This is about sleeping...with you...in our bed, just sleeping, no talking. Just silence, me listening to your soft breaths. That's truth."

To sexy, "Baby, look at me. Don't you fucking dare be embarrassed. Not with me. Not ever. You are so sexy. It's just us. It's always gonna be just us." (During a certain out of this world shower scene...;-))

To possessive, "It doesn't matter that he's my best friend and I trust him with your life. You've got to know, the next time you're looking at me like that, eye fucking me, baby, and you mention another man, be ready not to sleep. It will take at least a few days of hearing you scream my name while I'm making you come, for me to get over it."

- Enviable, relatable characters: Chase is a force to be reckoned with, going after what he wants in a charming alpha male way but having a tragic pasts which develops such an attractive vulnerability about him. Lili is also someone trying to overcome a past but with such a bright outlook on life. She's independent but willing to take risks, hearing her POV throughout the novel was very touching and appealing to me as the reader.
- Believable, fully-developed plot/storyline (sucks you in, living page to page): CHECK!
- Amazing intimacy/chemistry: I am still fanning myself over the connection this two have and the amazing way it was written for us to feel that throughout the pages!
- Well written, nice transitions, limited editing issues: Check!
- Supporting characters (who actually support the plot and main characters)- Meaty epilogue with awe-worthy revelations or conclusions: this book was really unique in that there were obvious pts starting at the 70% or so pt where the book could have easily ended like most do. But then a new chapter would start and something referenced in the beginning would come full circle and leave you stunned the authors remembered to tie up that minor loose end. I liked seeing the time after what could have been the HEA, and knowing by the end there was still plenty of suspense and angst left to keep the story going all the way til the end. Was definitely a risk but one I really enjoyed.
- Lastly, that intangible lasting memory of the book that isn't likely to leave you for a while :-): Check! Check! Check!

In summary, this was a very impressive debut novel and I am beyond excited to read the next in the series and gain a new author to follow!

4 ★★★★'s❣

TRUTH loved it!

I really wasn't sure what to think when I read the prologue to this book. I felt the pain and anguish and just hoped that by the end of the book that their would be some peace.

Beautifully Awake is that type of book that may have had some flaws and some moments when I just wanted things to be a little different BUT I found too many other things that I just LOVED about it and I know you will too!

The MC's are Lili Porter and Dr. Chase Colton. AKA Dr. Sexy, Dr. Jealous, Dr. Handsome, Dr. Rich, Dr. Pompous, Dr. Intense, Dr. Sweet, Dr. Compassionate, Dr. Bossy and Dr. Playful to name a few.

I loved Lili. She was strong. She was beautiful. She wanted to feel again. And she wanted to love again but she was broken. She had secrets that when we finally find out what they were broke my heart.

Dr. Chase Colton, well I loved him too. He was possessive, bossy and intense. But he was also very sexy, compassionate and playful. Chase was also broken. His past continues to haunt him. It was painful. What he experienced was something so difficult to let go of.

Separately they were just existing and not truly living or feeling. That is until they find each other.

While I did think that how they come together was a bit rushed and wished they had more time reaching that point, I also feel that they did fit together perfectly. Lili said, "We were perfect. We Fit. No Apologies. No explanations. Just us. Perfection." And this was so true. Their chemistry was undeniable. There were some sex scenes that were off the charts. At the top of that chart has to be the shower scene❣❣ OMG!

I won't go into the plot but I will say that Lili and Chase's story is not a simple one. They both have layers of grief and pain that needs healing. As their story unfolds both of them find that absolution that they both desperately need.

The supporting characters were great too. Sierra constantly had me chuckling. The comments she would make are just too funny. Guy, added a bit of sexual tension that kept Dr. Sexy on the edge. And lets not forget Asher. He too was sweet. The things he woulds say to Lili made my heart smile. You know he loves Chase and would do anything for him. I also loved the man-banter between the two of them.

Back to the beginning of my review. Peace was found. :)

There were a number of things that Chase would say that made my heart flutter but I think my favorite is....

"The spot where your head is laying against my chest is where we live. Got me, Blue?"

4.5 you have to wait and see STARS

Paging ALL readers! Paging ALL readers! Your attendance is wanted in the OR. Please leave your panties at the door. Dr. P is gonna begin melting your panties blowing you away (no pun intended :P )

LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

For all those who write the synopsis of a romance novel: ALAWAYS include something about the male character. ALWAYS!!!

This book was a great surprise, I kinda was in the mood for a HAWT doctor, and boy, did I get one... or three. Dr. Chase Colton is the new world-renowned neurosurgeon in the hospital in which Lili Porter is a case manager and due to some financial troubles, the hospital make these case managers take turns in rotating on different surgery services and in July was neuro's turn. Lucky, Lili!!! or not?!

Thank God for sake and the Truth.

They're both truthful to each other, except when it comes to the hardest truths of all, but with a little hope and patience they'll find a way back to each other.

I absolutely enjoyed the conversations between Lili and her bestie and most of all the banter between Chase and his best friend, Asher (he gets his own book! WHOOP!)

“Fine, you’re no fun, but if there are any hotties on your team this month, I’m gonna want details. Your eyes still work, right? Even if your vagina’s sealed shut by now.”

“Gorgeous and a hockey fan. How did this loser get so lucky?”
“Jealous much? I’ve got to tell you, man, it’s not your best look.”

TRUTH:
Even though the book lost me a little after 50%, I kinda devoured it.

TRUTH:
WHAT KIND OF EPILOGUE WAS THAT??!!! I HAD A FREAKIN' STROKE! I needed like ten thousand kisses on the tip of my nose to make the anxiety go away.

ULTIMATE TRUTH:
"The spot where your head is laying against my chest is where we live. Got me, Blue?"

Listen to the man and go read this book! XO

I didn't realize there was a sequel so when the book ended with unanswered questions (what was the point of the "epilogue"?), I was a bit confused and slightly annoyed. Thankfully we get more and I don't have to riot in the streets. Other than a few overly dramatic cheesy declarations of love that had me rolling my eyes, the story was really good. Chase was yummy enough for me to overlook that, anyway. I was bummed about the reactions and how things were handled when secrets were revealed. I don't like when characters fall short and then we're expected to forget about it and get over it because the characters do. When his TRUTH was finally told, I understood his reaction. Horrifically traumatic stuff went down, but the abandonment is still hard to let go. Now on to less heavy stuff. I have to go on record as saying I am completely against Asher having anything to do with Kate. Don't think I can get over her stupidity with CJ. So if at some point something starts to go down between them, I might have to jump ship. Now I'm the one being overly dramatic.

5 heartbreaking earth shattering pain in my chest stars!!!
Review by Natasha Gentile

(while writing this I’m listening to how to save a life…you’ll get why)

So you start off this book about Lili..Social worker extraordinaire. She has just moved to Philadelphia to become a case manager. Fresh start..

New service, new residents, new intern and a brand new attending.

How bad can it be…BAD…HORRIBLE..UNIMAGINABLE..Her new attending..total freaking asshole..total freaking good looking asshole..total f*cking Mcdreamy….

He’s what, like thirty-six and alrea dy f*ckin’ Chief of Neuro..

UMMM Yes Please..

And when she met him…Her world..STOPPED..Chase Colton..SIGHS

I grabbed my tablet and pivoted on my heel to come face to face with a presence that sent a sudden shiver down my spine. Storm cloud grey eyes locked with mine and cut like glass. It was hard to tell if it was deliberation or anger, but his intensity startled me. My breath hitched and I took a step back. The small amount of extra space allowed the face possessing those eyes to come into focus. Strong jaw. Sharp nose. Razored cheekbones. CHISLED. Every defined line brought focus right back to those eyes. His bronze skin looked a shade darker than his five o’clock shadow, while dark chocolate hair hung unruly over a faint linear indentation across his forehead.

Seriously….I would seriously consider maybe messing with my brain in order to have him operate on me…I mean come on…chiseled…what's the worse that can happen…Oh right the thought that I might die…brings me back into the real world…thus I must just read about this creation of God. Okay, enough back to the story.

Lili and Chase start playing the cat and mouse game. Except Lili got burned and Chase believes that he is just not good enough for her “sweetness”. What Chase doesn't get is that you don't choose who you fall in love with or who falls in love with you regardless of whether you “deserve” it or not.

The journey of love for these two was like a war zone. I mean , with her ex boyfriend, who I swear didn’t have a name, but they referred to him as, and I swear and kid you not, F*ckface, (best name ever), to her trust issues, to his trust issues and grief, you think to yourself, "How much can two people withstand to be together?"

He pursued her until she gave in until he pushed himself in and then when she needed him..he left…and with that he broke my heart.

I picked myself up and headed straight for the bathroom. Maybe a long hot shower was exactly what I needed. But what I wanted was Chase. His arms securely around me. His intoxicating smell filling my senses.

But what happens when you leave someone that you love, when you know they love you, when you know that she is your everything, when you know that you choose her over the next breath you take? You go back and you fight for it. You fight for her, you fight for your future, you fight to stay beautifully awake…

It was such a gorgeous story in the end..you know after I pulled out at least 30 strands of hair, and indulged in a carbs packed meal.

Simply Beautifully Awake. Sighs...

Loved it! Lili and Chase's story was beautiful.
This story had me laughing, swooning, laughing again and crying! Not necessarily tissue after tissue, but definitely tear worthy.

"raw and explosive one minute, to tender and loving the next"

that is a very fitting description taken right from the story itself!

Lili is a sweet, beautiful girl living a ho hum life. She is "sleep running" as she calls it. She suffered a great tragedy and is now simply existing, rather than living... that is until the day she meets Dr. Chase Colton.

And Dr. Chase Colton aka Dr. Sexy, Dr. Possessive, Dr. Intensity, Dr. Compassionate, Dr. Orgasm... is one hot ass alpha male surgeon! mm mm mm
Chase is also holding back from really living. He harbors great guilt for his past mistakes and there was absolutely nothing anybody could do to change him ..... until Lili came along.

Another reviewer mentioned Grey's Anatomy. It's true! You do get a Grey's Anatomy/ER feel, especially in the beginning.

Loved...
Chase is very possessive and protective.. and SO HOT!
There are several supporting characters, friends and family whom all added great humor and drama.
Sierra's pregnancy woes had me rolling on the floor laughing!!
Chase's family secrets and pain caused me just that, pain. How utterly heart-breaking! And the Epilogue!!! HOLY CRAP, this is where I did most of the crying!!!

Not so much love...
Some of it was a little repetitive. Asspuck! Ok, that was funny.. but it was the only word they used, over and over!
Also the use of "truth". The first couple of times it was sweet, then after the 50th "truth" all I could see was The Kardashians saying Bible!

Speaking of all things Kardashian.. Guy sure liked using the term "Doll"!! (but that I liked)

And finally.... Blue! I can't get over the nickname. I get it, it's her eyes.. yes, yes, sweet.. but really? All I kept thinking was BLUE 32, BLUE 32, HUT HUT!!

SO... repetitive words aside.... and really, what's a couple of words?? .... I did really love this!!
Great job ladies! I am looking forward to reading Beautifully Done in 2014!

Beautifully Awake started off one way and turned into a hot, sexy, erotic read. The majority of the book is written in the point of view of Lil; a 27 year-old case manager at a Philadelphia hospital. She comes from a small town and has a sorry for an excuse of an ex boyfriend she doesn’t even want to think about. She has not let herself open up to anyone since her break up three years ago and focuses on her career. She is power driven woman and I really liked her strong willed personality.

Enter Chase Colton; one of the nation’s leading neurosurgeons is now Lil’s boss. He is known as a hard-ass and barks orders around at everyone. He is insanely good looking, rich, successful, but a total jerk to everyone. For someone reason he takes an immediate interest to Lil, he is very domineering with Lil and turns hot and cold. Lil is completely confused by Chase’s behavior toward her.

The two immediately have hot crazy sex and the book turns into an erotic read. It changes quickly and I wish it didn’t change so fast. I was enjoying the beginning of the book and the cat & mouse game they played. Immediately they start calling each other “baby”, some scenes were a bit over the top for me.

I liked the story a lot and was attached enough to want to know what happens next and reading the book in just a few days, it’s a rather long book for an erotic read but I never felt it dragged on. I loved the hospital atmosphere and the work place romance… I am such a sucker for those! The minor characters were fun; Sierra made me laugh, and I liked Guy and Ash…. I can see them getting their own books, maybe in the future?

I give Beautifully Awake 3 - 3.5 Stars.

This was unbelievably great. Sometimes a reveal, like the two Chase had, are so out of left field that you gasp out loud. Well I did that gasp a few times. Totally engrossing book. The story of Chase and his profession are something else! He is a real doctor. By that I mean he is so focused on giving the best care he can that you learn more about him, thus creating the stigma about beside manners. I would actually say that part of the character is enlightening. Most would agree, go in there, do the surgery and I could care less if you chit chat with me, just heal me! Chase does just that.

In the character mashup of the original four= Asher, Chase, Kimi and Talia all makes appearances, some much more prevalent than others. The story of their growing up, their dreams and their rock band were some of the special things that make you feel what you feel when their reveals happen.....I know their secrets! in a word explosive. OK one last thing about the reveals, they are spaced out in a sort of breadcrumb trail. I was thrilled when a few happened because it is SO out of left field, really good, great, shut up and read it sort of thing!

Lastly Lil, she is the medicine that the entire hospital needs. She is a case manager that cares. She is responsible for the happiness of many and one man in-particular. The romance part is really well written, so the steamy scene lovers will gobble it up.

Take my advice especially if you like drama and angst. I say read it now!

NOTE about the medical parts. This is fascinating to read especially as a nurse. The dialogue and the medical terminology with the treatments were great. I felt it added the perfect amount of smart to the book! I'm starting nook 2 now
