After war came something even harder: peace.
“When it had no further use for me, the Legion dumped me on a frontier world and told me to be a good colonist.

I failed.

And then, at my lowest ebb and with a mega-storm about to batter my farm, an alien breached my perimeter. Naturally, I grabbed my old carbine, got the filthy creature in my sights and… and what happened next will change the world.

But that’s dull. You don’t want to hear about corrupt politicians, secret cabals, and revolution. It’s what happened to me, NJ McCall, that you won’t believe.

For a start, I joined Revenge Squad Inc.

And that’s why I’m here today. I’m not here about justice or freedom. Been there, done that. I’ve come to deliver something a little more personal. I’ve come for REVENGE!”

Set in the worlds of the Human Legion, the opening novel in the new urban fantasy/ space opera crossover series from Tim C. Taylor, After War is an addition to the science fiction and fantasy adventure tradition of A.G. Riddle, Jim Butcher, and Vaughn Heppner.

It was ok

It started out with great promise. Alas it didn't end that way. I probably won't read #2. I'll check the ratings later and reassess.

Good read

We read about these enhanced marines so much , it was cool to read the " After War " . This was a good story on a lot of levels , prejudice , revenge , and ptsd , and some gross stuff to keep it real .lol

I wrote this one, so I won't rate it. It's my urban fantasy/ space opera crossover. I 'discovered' Jim Butcher's Dresden Files last year (I know... a lot of people found him first) and loved it so much that I wanted to write something like that. This is the result, set in the worlds of the Human Legion. I'm not going to say it is 'Dresden Files in space' but I was channeling that vibe as I wrote them. It was a blast to write, anyway (obviously).

Promising

Good book. I liked the relationships between the characters. I didn't like the flow of the story. Things seemed slow at times artificially drawn out. However I liked it enough that I will probably read the next in series.

Was looking forward to this book as I enjoyed the human legion series so far. I hate doing reviews solely due to I cant write them to do justice and I hate spoilers

this book started fast and completely different from Tim's human legion style , really enjoyed how it was in more first person POV and kind of quirky with the ghost's in head so we also had other small POV scenes , NJ McCall was great kind of like Jim butchers, Kevin Hearne funny characters and it was instant click with me . book slowed down after bit as was building a base of support characters and a world this was fine by me as I could see the long game for this sub series and as I clicked with NJ it made it worthwhile and explored some of NJ and the ghost that bit more. I did start to get worried that at 90% ish done there was no book end build up to polish off the great groundwork Tim had laid but then bang it hit and was so surprising that it was oh I need to keep on and read it till end good. arc for next book was laid and I cant wait . overall I gave 5* something I don't like doing for new author's or new series from any author but NJ himself made me laugh and smile every minute of this book so for rest book would say 3.5 to 4 stars and NJ himself 5*

If you have never been in combat...

Then much of this story will be lost on you. One person(or more) downgraded this to 3 stars and reviewed it as boring. Other than the heart-breaking murder of Chris Kyle this depiction of PTSD is the most poignant and even though written as fiction, has a base in reality, of that I am certain. If you are curious about what goes through what's left of a warrior's battered mind, I urge you to read this.

This is a great book in the series. A must read
Tim puts you into the mind of a warrior. And it is one ruff place to be. It is also very crowded there. Loved this fantastic book.

PTSD, PTSD, PTS.....

Enjoyed first two books of authors Human Legion series before it became a 'Doc' Smith space opera, which wasn't very enjoyable. Legion series restarted and thought I'd give it a try. IMO, better than original, more authentic and credible militarily. Just realized it's another author and I read this because of the newer Legion books....... Ouch!

The book started well and I was engaged. Author conveyed well in beginning but then the MC became inconsistent with his background and his current PTSD condition. Inconsistent, erratic between training, history and the PTSD which the author maintained constantly throughout story and subsequent MCs actions.

Don't want to beat up author because PTSD is a common theme nowadays. And most authors are using same, common script and then 'extrapolate' in their vision of it. I don't know what PTSD really is -- Hate, Guilt, Rage, Anger, absolutely-- but PTSD? I do know that this author doesn't know. And as story went, I just didn't buy into the whole Revenge Squad thing-- square, round hole thing.

The horrors of war.

NJ is a mess, with his deceased squad in his head and the trauma of his previous life to cope with all he wants is to be left alone. The arrival of Silky, a mysterious alien, signals the beginning of NJ's return to life.
I like Mr Taylor's depiction of an ex-soldier left to his own devices after the horrors of war. NJ felt very real, though his ghosts are actually part of him rather than just in his imagination. The story is occasionally baffling but everything becomes clear in the end. A thrill ride of a story that I thoroughly enjoyed, this book has introduced me to a new author who I will be reading more from.

Not quite my style

However, the first couple of chapters were well written. I'm just not as interested in the story as I thought I might be by the books description.
