Game Break is a LITRPG Series There is some swearing and a bit of nudity, but all in good taste, I hope.
OK so first off, I did enjoy the story. However, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET A PROFESSIONAL EDITOR! Also you have an 'addiction ' to 'quotes' and it's 'bloody' 'annoying'.
A good editor will prevent things like ''I have a message from God'' becoming ''I have a massage from dog''
As a fan of both RPGs and fantasy novels, the LitRPG is generally something I enjoy, but this book was nothing but disappointing.
Writing quality 2/5 - This book contains many misspellings and encloses words and phrases in single quotes all the time for no reason. Sentences and phrasing are frequently awkward, and both dialogue and pacing suffer because of this. The author also misunderstands slang, or makes up new slang that is so close to existing slang as to be awkward. (e.g. - A wight (an extremely common undead creature) being called a 'White'; using perp to refer to pkers, but saying its short for perpetrator rather than being purp because of the name color). All in all, not the best written, but it was readable if frustrating.
Plot/Pacing 2/5 - If you disregard the entirety of the book, and were to look at only a summary, this book has an interesting premise with the potential for mystery and intrigue in a VRMMO world. Unfortunately, the way these mysteries are presented and revealed frequently comes across flat and forced. Events happen seemingly out of nowhere to force a new fragment of the mystery and are promptly discarded without any chance to develop them into something good. The story felt at times both rushed and frustratingly slow.
Character Development 1/5 - Characters are extremely flat, and the few attempts to develop them into being more come across as ham-fisted. If you have to switch to a characters point of view to explicitly spell out in italicised thoughts why they act the way they do, something is wrong. The fact that there is only one such switch in the book further isolates it and makes the attempted characterisation more awkward.
Ultimately, this feels like a very rough first draft that was published without being proofread or edited by anyone other than the author. The general picture is there, but it feels like there are pieces missing and way too much that needed to be trimmed out.
I just discovered this genre of books and have been reading all I can find. This was one of the better books I've found, a tad slow in some areas few spots but nothing bad. I'm really hoping the author releases the next book in the series very soon.
Because of how poorly written most litRPG books are, I have a new rule on reading them: If there is a typo or a grammar issue in the very first sentence, I'm giving it next to no chance beyond that.
First sentence of this book:
"GET HER OUT OF THAT DAM MACHINE," David bellowed at his assistant.
The machine in question had nothing to do with holding water back, so I only read a couple pages beyond that, then gave up on it. DNF
This story was lots of fun and a very easy read! The author did a great job setting up the world as well as the big mystery story arc around the MC which looks like will play out over the entire series.
Highly recommend this LitRPG book to all readers and looking forward to book 2!!!
This is a decidedly entertaining story. My biggest issue is that Hodgson desperately needs to hire a proof reader/editor. There are a huge amount of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors that need to be resolved. That being said I am eagerly awaiting book 2.
I gave this book one star for one reason and that is because the author comented on the story withon the book, speaking directly to the reader which is completely imersion breaking.
It is the worst audio I've ever bought. Sounds like she's recorded it on an old tape recorder 🙈 can't believe this is actually on Amazon and affiliated with audible.
A well thought and humorous book. Unique enough in its plotline and world building to help it stand out from the rest of genre. Enjoyable characters and nice skills and progression.
This starts off like some other litrpg novels I've read but with a twist. The MC doesn't have any memories. What follows is an enjoyable adventure through a rich world. Hayden isn't overpowered and is well rounded, he doesn't just act but you can see the steps he makes which gives the story an added dimension.
Enjoyable fun story which o devoured in a single sitting.
This was a very nice read. The characters were likable and the main didn't make boneheaded decisions. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down and I'm really looking forward to the next book.
The book does have some formatting issues. Their was several time where the last few sentences on a page was repeated on the page. Grammar wise nothing stood out to me but I'm not a grammar Nazi either.
Terrible, terrible punctuation. There are commas like every third word, very distracting. There are several instances where the main character is overcome with emotions for almost no reason. The plot is good but by the end of the book there is literally no closure with anything. The climax of the book is very underwhelming. I was about ready to drop the book almost the whole way through but stuck it out anyway so I could write an accurate review.
Don't throw in the towel-- read past 15%. It gets GOOD
I almost stopped reading at around 13%. I am very glad I didn't.
Soon after in the book there was a major shift, the story became interesting, the quality improved dramatically and it switched from a 1 or 2 star beginning to a solid 4 star remainder of the book. More realistic and systemic growth and equipment. Interesting side characters. I will definitely read the next in the series.
This is a great read. If you like good characters with great game mechanics. loved the pixie with a giant sword and krampus. The boss fights are top notch.
Have read several litrpg and this one is one of my favourite. The story is good, the char development is decent, and gives you enough info to thirst for the second one immediatelly.
The plot is a good idea. However, the spelling, grammar, and spacing in the book..... is awful. I'm not one to care about grammar or spelling. This time though, it's so prominent, you can't ignore it. It made it very hard to get through.
This was a very enjoyable book. There were some spelling errors but it was no big deal. At first I was not sure this story was going to work but as the author moved the reader through the book it became more engaging and fun. I look forward to see what happens next.
This is one of the best litrpgs I have read in a while it keeps you guessing and slowly rolls out the story all while having an extremely interesting main character.
A very good little story with N interesting game world and stay. The sinister background is meant to be hidden and mysterious but it's fairly obvious if you pick up on the clues.
It's been so long since I read this. I've been waiting on the 2nd. Since it just came out I decided to re-read this. I liked it just as much on the second read.
