Now infamous for his exploits, Jack Myst is a master thief. As a member of the Thieves Guild he has fought assassins, reavers, and even a devil—but now he faces his greatest challenge yet, the rank of guildmaster. Ascending to the office after defeating Skorn at Margauth, he launches a daring plan, one to steal what cannot be stolen. A god. But Skorn has retrieved the fragments of an ancient artifact, and has begun construction on the Necrolith, the beacon of ending. He issues a king’s bounty on Jack’s head, turning governments and guilds against him. Hounded by soldiers and hunted by assassins, it will require all of Jack’s skill to triumph over Skorn. He couldn’t be more excited.
As an avid snowboarder from Utah, Ben grew up with a passion for learning. This thirst for knowledge led him to sports, music, and academic endeavors. After a year of college, he did volunteer work in Brazil and became fluent in three languages. Graduating from the University of Central Florida, he started and ran several successful businesses before publishing his first novel in June of 2012. By the end of the year he'd sold almost ten thousand copies of The Second Draeken War, and he began writing full-time. Now spanning 10,000 years, ten titles, and two series, The Chronicles of Lumineia represents a sprawling YA series that has sold over fifty thousand copies, and continues to expand its readership across all ages. Each of his books has been inspired by his wonderful wife and five beautiful children.

This is the final book of "The Master Thief" trilogy that has followed the exploits of Jack Myst prior to the events of "The Chronicles of Lumineia". In this, Jack has been chaffing under the constraints of being the newly-installed head of the thieves' guild. However, the threat of Skorn still hangs over him.
These books have been very entertaining, but, to be honest, I found them the most forgettable of all of Ben's books. I think I just never really connected to Jack the way others did whereas my affinity for Tryton keeps his trilogy more firmly in my head. That's, of course, not to say this hasn't been a good series. That's just personal preference. The characters in these books have been great as always and it has been interesting reading about the group dynamics as they, at times, form an Ocean's Eleven-esque group of thieves.
What has been most interesting in this series has been the move away from the regular antagonist of Ben's books. All the other series have had Drakken and his hordes as the ultimate bad against which the protagonists have been fighting. In this, however, Skorn doesn't seem to have much, if any, connection to Drakken. Rather, Skorn and his counterpart Ero are revered as gods and seem to be part of a race of beings that transcended the world of Lumineia as we've come to know it. I suspect this is introducing us to the next series that Ben is working on.
Finally, Jack is definitely in the mold of previous Hale protagonists that are supremely skilled and powerful and who rarely make mistakes. I could imagine a reader being put off by how untouchable they seem to be, but I have always enjoyed Ben's characters exercising their abilities without going through too much effort to humble them.
A good read, as always. I remain a faithful reader of Ben's work and look forward to the new series.
Love the series, but have 2 little quibbles .... If someone could please count how many times an eyebrow peaked, and the smirking. Seriously , over 3 books, the smirking has peaked! And once one has noticed the peaking and the smirking, you can’t stop noticing!!!
Complete with numerous smirks and inclined heads to "Your arrogance will get you, us killed" lines + bad guys seeking to talk their captive good guy to death, made me grateful the third book was the last one.
Repetitive and with an all powerful protagonist whose day is filled with smirks and smirking.
The good news is that Jack will return for future installments filled with his smirking and banal dialogue.
I think the author overestimates how women would respond to someone like Jack. A smirk and a smile would not be enough to overcome the complete arrogance of him for most women. Not every woman would fall head over heels in love with him just by him looking at them. I’m very glad I finished the book since now I can move on to the next books in the world.
The story was great but the character creation in this trilogy was amazing. Each character had a clearly different personality that developed as the story went on. The characters made this story even better.
Jack is such an amazing character and has "stolen" a place in my heart!
The narraratar definitely Brings this book to Life! Full of action, mystery, Love, and the perfect amount of drama to make this book perfect for all ages!
While I found the first book in the series to be ok, the books kept getting better and ended on such a strong note. If you love sneakiness and fantasy this would be a great book to read and I highly recommend.
