Mark Twain for Dog Lovers combines one of America's most beloved authors and dogs. Twain specialist R. Kent Rasmussen traces the history of dogs in Twain's life--from the ones he knew personally, like his daughter's dog which he took in after she died, to the foreign dogs he saw on his travels around the world. Compiling 30 stories and extracts from Twain's wiritings, Rasmussen tells a detailed an compelling story of Twain's relationship with one of America's favorite pets.
(I'm writing this in November 2016 merely to report I have not been active on GoodReads for several years. I've been busying writing and editing books and haven't had the time or inclination to keep up with social media. I don't object to this sort of site on principle. It's just that I'm bothered by the way keeping up everything can suck up one's time and become an end in itself.)
Excellent! I have read other writings of Mark Twain but not Dog Stories. I have been reading a lot of dog fiction lately by modern authors and have been wanting to read some Mark Twain. Some of it was fascinating and much of it very humorous! A lot of credit to R. Kent Rasmussen for an amazing job putting the book together and all the hard work that went into it! Enjoy!
Okay, I enjoy reading Mark Twain, and this book has writings in most every style Twain did. There are stories written for humor. Stories written to persuade the reader to act on an issue Twain finds compelling. Some stories here stick it to the MAN. Some are really tall tales. Some are fable-like. And all of them have a dog (or dogs) in them. As Twain might say, some are even true. Most of the stories are very short, making this a good book to read, put down and return later. Some of the dogs in the stories are treated very poorly, and dog lovers may have a tough time with it.
