Get ready to "think outside the box!" Author and artist Chris Cozen demonstrates how acrylic paints, fluids, gels, mediums, grounds, and pastes work together as a system, allowing them to be fully compatible with each other. Join Cozen as she shows how to mix and match these artist's essentials to achieve luscious, vibrant, and exciting results. Altered Surfaces will take you on a wonderful adventure using a myriad of paints and products available in the acrylic paint line. You'll discover paints that are richly and generously packed with artist pigments, and provide incredible results on paper, canvas, board and plastic. Once you start using these artist grade paints you may never go back to 'craft' or 'student' grade paints, which have less pigment. Be brave, experiment and try new combinations—it's the best route to discovery!
From Amazon, April 2, 2008. If you are an artist interested in the enormous range of possibilities of acrylic paints, this is the book for you! Even if you are experienced with acrylics, you are guaranteed to learn new things from this book. As a part of Golden Acrylic Colors' Working Artists program, Chris Cozen has an astonishing knowledge of acrylic paint and how it behaves.
This deceptively slender volume is packed with information, while still containting enough basic information that a beginner could easily start with this book. As the title suggests, there is a lot of information about acrylic mediums and grounds (sorely lacking in many other books), including some of the new products released recently by Golden. Molding paste, crackle paste, pumice gel, fiber paste, clear tar gel and glass bead gel are just a few of the items she covers. She also describes how to achieve the look of encaustics with acrylic products, something I plan to try soon!
This is one of the best sources of information for artists interested in expanding their horizons with acrylic paints. Not a substitute for a class from this inspiring teacher, but a good reference guide and source of ideas.
This was geared (sponsored?) towards Golden Acrylic products which I enjoy using. That said, this was full of lots of information about the uses and techniques for different mediums, gessoes and acrylic, glazes and paints. I think much of this would apply towards other acrylic manufacturers as well. Thoroughly enjoyable reference book I'll be keeping on my shelf, unless I am loaning it out to other altered arts enthusiasts. It was as bright inside as the cover--
This book is short, but densely informative and is chock full o' photo examples of the techniques! Since Chris is a Golden Working Artist, all products are Golden's but the techniques work well no matter what brand of paint/ground/mediums you choose.
Chris makes color mixing, blending and layering easy to understand. Read this book and you'll never have "mud" on your projects again!
I appreciated all the information and the techniques, but I thought it could have been better organized. Surprisingly enough, if it's a part of the series that I'm thinking of, it seemed better organized than other books in the series. All in all, it's a good collection of exactly what the title describes.
While it's clear that this book is sponsored by Golden, it's really well put together and BRIMMING with cool ideas. There were some techniques in here that we're brand new to me and I'm really excited to try them out.
This little book is chock full of information about how to use acrylics and mediums to create a variety of effects. Interesting and got some good ideas. 3 stars.
