हिंदी साहित्य में यायावर हो जाने में राहुल सांकृत्यायन, अज्ञेय और निर्मल वर्मा का नाम अग्रणीय है| इसी कड़ी में अनुराधाजी का नाम जुड़ गया है| ये किताब अन्य यात्रा वृतांतों से अलग है क्यूंकि इसमें रिपोर्ताज़ और इतिहास का बंधन न के बराबर है| 'आज़ादी मेरा ब्रांड' पूरी तरह व्यक्तिगत आज़ादी और घुमक्कड़ी को जोड़ती है| अनुराधाजी ने सही गलत, समाज, संस्कृति का मूल्याङ्कन केवल आज़ादी की कसौटी पे कर डाला है| आम भाषा में विचारधाराओं के लेंस के बिना एक लड़की ने अपनी यूरोप का यात्रा वृतांत लिख डाला है| यात्रा वृतांत यूरोपियन समाज को प्रतिबिम्बित करने का दम्भ नहीं भरता बल्कि वहां पर रहने वाले प्रवासीय भारतीय, पुराने दोस्त, फ्रेंच, इंग्लिश, जर्मन, ऐंव चेक लोगों की निजी ज़िन्दगी का हिस्सा आपके सामने साफगोई से रखता है| और किताब के अंत में आप वो आज़ादी की खोज अपने समाज में करने को मज़बूर हो जाते हैं, यही लेखनी का जादू है |

इस किताब के बारे में ये नहीं कहा जा सकता की बहुत अच्छा लिखा गया है, यहाँ तक की ये भी कहा जा सकता है की जरा कच्चा लिखा गया है. पर इस कच्चेपन के ही कारन आप इस किताब को एक ही सांस में पढ़ जायेंगे. शायद ये किताब लिखने के लिए लिखी भी नहीं गयी थी. लेखिका ने अपने यूरो ट्रिप को ऐसे बताया है जैसे उसने शायद अपनी डायरी में लिखा होगा. इस किताब का मकसद शायद ये नहीं होगा की आप इसे अपनी फेवरेट किताबों की लिस्ट में चढ़ा लें, लेकिन ये जरूर होगा की आप भी अपनी डायरी उठाएं और उसमे अपना ट्रिप प्लान करें और ट्रिप के बारे में लिखें. थोडा बेहतर जीना है, ऐसा याद दिलाती है ये किताब. लेखिका का शुक्रीया करने का मन करता है की उन्होंने ये ट्रिप किया ताकि हम जैसी लड़कियों को पता चले की हरयाणा के एक छोटे से गाँव से निकल कर भी लड़कियां अंजान शहरों में, अनजान लोगों (लड़कों) में महफूज रह सकती हैं, और चूँकि ये महफूजियत अपनी ढूंढी हुई है तो ये कितनी अजीज भी है. इसका कोई बोझ नहीं हैं, कोई कर्फ्यू नहीं है.

This book was recommended by loveliest Aashna (@aashna.mittal21). Before this I had never heard about either the book or the author. And frankly speaking, if I would have seen it in a book store, I might not have picked it up. Apart from being unheard of, for me this was out of my comfort level as well. It’s a Hindi non-fiction travelogue - definitely not my usual cup of tea.
But what a pleasant surprise this book has been, I was literally underlining many of her views throughout.
This book is a travel journey of an Indian woman as she backpacks and solo travels across the Europe. This book doesn’t have rich history of the places she visits or laden with sightseeing spots. It has stories - her own and the ones she meets along the way! And within these stories is her journey to find herself, her freedom and identity and fight the patriarchy and societal norms on the way!

Reading her journey from one city to other, trying to find hosts, food, saving money, hitchhiking - I was constantly revisiting my own limited solo journeys. I really appreciated how Anuradha didn’t romanticise the European cities or the travel. What she focused upon were the experiences in her easy to read, fluid language.

I felt extremely empowered, inspired and closer to my feminist core values after reading this book! Recommend? Oh yes!

I enjoyed reading about the places, the people, and the experiences from the journey. That was easily the best part of the book.

What didn't work for me was the writing. The same ideas about taking breaks, slowing down, and finding yourself kept coming up throughout the book. After a point, it started feeling repetitive. Overall, it was a good travel memoir, but I was expecting a fresher narrative and stronger storytelling....

I recommend this book to every Indian girl who has a burning desire to smash patriarchy and demand her freedom. It does not matter how old you are. If ever you have felt that your culture has gone against your values, you must read this book to educate yourself and find some answers. A must read book for all Indian women.

It is a travelogue of an Indian woman who finds liberation during here solo travel in Europe. The book has a casual language and style, yet it has been successful in exposing the hypocrisy of so called Indian values and archaic traditions like arrange marriages, selective respect for woman and many more. The book has plethora of conversations, the writer with herself and with the people she meets in different countries. With every conversation she discovers a layer within herself and reaches her core. During these conversations it also quashes the chauvinistic Indian behavior of boasting their spiritualism and bashing the west for absence of it. It also gives useful tips on solo travel in Europe. A wonderful novel attempt by a modern Indian woman to communicate her challenges, her demands and her complaints in a subtle and sometimes humorous way. I wish to read more of the writer in future.

One of my closest friends gifted me this book based on my interests and personality and I’m thankful to her for this book. Unlike other travelogue, I found this book something much more personal. It isn’t just about Europe. It’s about freedom, fear, middle-class dreams, and choosing to step outside your comfort zone.

The best part of the book is its language.

It’s simple, direct, and conversational. There are no complicated words or literary gymnastics. It feels like someone is sitting in front of you, sharing stories over a cup of chai. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t usually enjoy reading books, I think you’ll find this one easy to finish.

The journey takes us through 10 European countries:

* Austria
* Hungary
* Switzerland (Rediff)

What I appreciated most was that this isn’t luxury travel. It’s backpacking done on a middle-class budget. The book quietly breaks one of the biggest myths many Indians grow up believing, that travelling across Europe requires a fortune. Instead, it shows that with planning, flexibility and smart choices, it’s far more achievable than most of us imagine.

One of my favourite takeaways wasn’t even about travel.

It was about people.

Looking at someone’s social media, it’s easy to assume they’re living their best life. Beautiful cities, cafés, mountains, smiling pictures—we often mistake those moments for happiness. But through her conversations and experiences, Anuradha reminds us that everyone is carrying something. The people who look happiest online may also be quietly struggling. That perspective stayed with me long after I finished the book.

If I have one criticism, it’s the beginning.

The opening chapters felt less like a travelogue and more like a discussion around feminism and personal ideology. It took me some time to get invested in the actual journey. Because of that, the first few chapters felt slower than the rest of the book.

But once the travel begins, the book becomes incredibly engaging.

There were two moments in the book that stayed with me long after I finished reading.

The first was when Anuradha realised, “My mother has no friends.”

It sounds like such a simple observation, but the more I thought about it, the more real it felt. Most of our mothers don’t really have friends they chose for themselves. They’re often our father’s friends’ wives, relatives, or women from the neighbourhood. Somewhere between responsibilities and family, many women forget to build a life that’s truly their own. That one line made me pause.

The second takeaway was the book’s definition of freedom.

Before reading this book, I used to think freedom was something society gives you or doesn’t. But after finishing it, I realised something different.

Freedom is a choice.

It’s not about waiting for permission. It’s about making difficult decisions, taking responsibility for them, and choosing the life you want despite the fear. The path may be harder, especially for women, but it’s still a choice we can make.

And I think that’s what this book does so beautifully. It doesn’t pretend that being a woman is easy. It acknowledges the fear, the judgments, the questions, and the challenges. But at the same time, it reminds you that your gender doesn’t have to decide the size of your dreams.

For me, Azaadi Mera Brand wasn’t just a travelogue about Europe.

It became a book about courage, perspective, and choosing freedom every single day.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely—especially if you’re someone who dreams of travelling solo, wants to explore Europe on a budget, or simply wants to read a book that feels honest, relatable, and deeply human.

बेपरवाह घुमक्कड़ी अनुराधा


ऐसी बेपरवाह बिंदास घुमक्कड़ लड़की की कहानी इस किताब में है जो जीना चाहती है धर्म और समाज के बनाये गए कई स्टीरियोटाईप के अलावा,जो चाहती है दिल्ली में बिंदास रात को पैदल घूमना,जो बार-बार कहना चाहती है हमारे देश के औरतों और लड़कियों को कि जीयो अपने मन से पहनो अपने मन से बल्कि रहो अपने मन से ।

लेखिका जब छोटे से हरियाणा के गाँव से निकल कर एक अनजान विदेशी लड़की से पुणे में मिलती है तो अपने आप को बदला हुआ पाती है। उसके बाद लेखिका ख़ुद के लिए पूरा यूरोप घूमने का मन बनाती है और इस दौरान उसे मिलने वालों लोग और परेशानियों को बेहतरीन तरह से किताब में परोसती है सिर्फ़ औरतों के लिए नहीं उन मर्दों के लिए भी जो धर्म के नाम और अपने समाज के मर्यादा के नाम पर या तो औरतों को देवी बनाकर उनकी इच्छाओं को मारते है। या ख़ुद इसका फ़ायदा उठाते है।

कई जगह जब लेखिका किसी से मिलने के बाद अपने संशय को शब्दों में बयान करती है तो साफ़-साफ़ एक भारतीय लड़की के कंधों पर बीना मतलब के लड़की होने की ज़िम्मेदारी झलकती है जिसे लेखिका झटक कर आगे बढ़ती है। यह यात्रा वृतांत वाक़ई कमाल है अंत के कुछ पन्ने स्पेशली मैन्युअल और लेखिका का धर्म पर डिस्कशन और अंत में औरतों के लिए संदेश दिमाग़ और दिल दोनों हिलाने वाला है।

घूमना या घुमक्कड़ होना सिर्फ़ इतना ही नहीं है की आप किसी जगह को देखे और जानें बल्कि उसके अलावा वहाँ के लोगों कल्चर उनकी रहन सहन सब कुछ समझें और साथ- साथ ख़ुद को भी टटोलें । हमारे देश में जहाँ एक लड़की को अपने घर से गली तक आने में सोचना पड़ता है वहाँ एक लड़की अनुराधा (लेखिका) यही समझना चाहती है घूम कर कि ऐसी कौन सी जगह है जहां एक लड़की क्या पहनती है अकेले क्यूँ घूमती है क्या खाती है इस पर कोई सवाल नहीं करता है ना ही कोई घूरता है अश्लील नज़रों से।

पूरी किताब लड़कियों के सम्मान के साथ जिंदा रहने, अपनी निजता और स्पेस खोजने की वकालत करती है । सबकुछ भूलकर घूमने की हिमायत करती है। सिर्फ घूमने के दम पर अनुराधा खुद लड़कियों और पूरे समाज की सोच को बदलने की बात करती हैं, ‘तुम चलोगे तो तुम्हारी बेटी भी चलेगी और मेरी बेटी भी. जब सब साथ चलेंगी तो सब आजाद, बेफिक्र और बेपरवाह ही चलेंगी. दुनिया को हमारे चलने की आदत हो जाएगी. अगर नहीं होगी तो आदत डलवानी पड़ेगी, डरकर घर में मत रह जाना । तू खुद अपना सहारा है । तुम अपने-आप के साथ घूमना । अपने तक पहुंचने और अपने-आप को पाने के लिए घूमना; तुम घूमना!‘

हरियाणा के एक छोटे से गाँव 'खेड़ी' से निकली एक लड़की 'अनु' अगर अकेले निकल सकती है दुनिया देखने तो हम क्यों नहीं? जी हाँ! 'आज़ादी मेरा ब्रांड' नामक यह क़िताब पढ़ते हुए यही सवाल ज़ेहन में आता है। अनुराधा बेनीवाल की लिखी इस क़िताब से मुझे तो इश्क़ हो गया है। इसमें ऐसी बहुत सी बातें हैं जो आपके दिल को छू जाएँगी तो बहुत सम्भव है कुछ चीजों से आप सहमत ना हो पाएँ। लेकिन यकीन मानिए यह किताब मोहब्बत है। लेखिका ने यूरोप के १० देशों में की गई घुमक्कड़ी को एक यात्रावृत्तांत का रूप दे दिया है। 'यायावरी आवारगी' श्रृंखला की यह पहली क़िताब है.. अगले पड़ाव का मुझे बेसब्री से इंतज़ार है। घर बैठे दुनिया को जान सकते हैं आप इस क़िताब से।

क़िताब की शुरुआत में एक जगह अनुराधा लिखती हैं कि लड़कों को हम अक्सर कहते सुनते हैं कि "ज़रा हवा खा के आता हूँ" या "ज़रा बाहर घूम के आता हूँ"...लेकिन कभी किसी लड़की को शायद ही ऐसा कहते सुना होगा। हमारे देश में लड़कियाँ बिना किसी काम के यूँ बाहर हवा खाने नहीं निकलतीं। ये बात मेरे दिल पर लग गई। उस शाम मैंने ये बात दीदी को बताई और कहा "दीदी चलो ना थोड़ा हवा खा के आते हैं"। और हम दोनों हँसने लगे। अँधेरा हो गया था। हम निकल पड़े बेमतलब.. हवा खाने। हमारे चेहरे पर एक खुशी थी...आज़ादी की खुशी...जो घर में बैठे रह के हमें कभी नहीं मिल सकती। हमें बाहर निकलना होगा। इस समाज से लड़ के। ख़ुद पे भरोसा रखते हुए। अभी सुनकर विश्वास नहीं हो शायद.. कि कोई लड़की अकेले भी किसी अनजान देश में बेफ़िक्र घूम सकती है वो भी कम पैसों में.. लेकिन 'हिंदी भाषा' में लिखी यह किताब आपको यकीन दिलाएगी कि ऐसा संभव है... और ऐसा पहले भी किया जा चुका है।

जरूर पढ़िए।

Loved it. It felt like I am traveling along with her. This book can push you to solo travel for sure. Apart from the fun of traveling of-course, Anuradha is in search of the freedom that she could not get in the society where she was grew up. She is in search of that `thing` that Europe has for her that India does not.

She comes from a patriarchial, conservative society where roaming around `bekam`, `befikr` is not normal for girls. So she seeks that. While seeking this, she constantly compares and reasons about the two cultures.

She is quite progressive but is self-aware of the still remaining conditioning in her nature. She still gets uncomfortable on beef, on someone asking her to share bed with him, she is still learning and is aware of her flaws and her strengths.

The world seems so kind, helping, and easy when she tells her story. She meets all these kind people, hosts who offer a place to stay, food to eat, people giving her lifts, strangers giving her company. It all feels so easy. Yes, there are times when she gets lost but she seeks fun in that.

Her idea of traveling does not seem to be a check-list of visiting the most famous places of the city. She just walks around. She feels the city, takes it in moment by moment, just gazing at the streets, at the people, at the buildings, bridges, trees. She emphasizes a lot on the fact that you don't need as much money as you think for roaming around the world. You just need the will to do it, just enough to step out.

This is a very good read. Very empowering. Very inspiring.

On the surface, it’s about her solo trip across Europe — a girl from India travelling alone through cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Prague, and the capital of Switzerland. But it’s not just about travel. It’s much more than that.

Through each city she visits, Anuradha doesn’t just talk about the culture, the nightlife, or the beauty of the place. Instead, she dives into deeper reflections — the mindset of people, the contrast between societies, and the invisible rules that shape a woman’s freedom. She constantly draws parallels between her experiences abroad and the societal norms back home in India.

What stands out is how she doesn’t just describe — she questions. She challenges religion, freedom, tradition, and the generational orthodoxy we continue to carry in the name of culture. Her voice is fierce, honest, and unapologetic. आज पहली बार किसी किताब को पढ़ने के बाद उसका review लिखने को दिल कर रहा है। यूँ तो वैसे भी पढ़ी हुई किताबें recommend कर देती हूं दूसरों को, मग़र ये किताब कुछ तो खास है। यूँ तो है ये एक यात्रा वृत्तांत बोले तो travel memoir, मगर उसके अलावा भी इतना कुछ है न इन 189 पन्नों में समेटा हुआ कि क्या ही कहूँ। कोई philosophy या ज्ञान नहीं, सिर्फ मन की बात (और ऐसी जिसे सुनने से पहले डर न लगे 😁)। ऐसे सवाल जो खुद को सोचने पे मजबूर करें। और मज़े की बात ये की सिर्फ सवाल, जवाब देने की चेष्टा भी नहीं, वो डिपार्टमेंट आप खुद संभालें। वैसे तो दर्शन के अलग ही मायने निकाले जाते हैं मग़र मेरे लिए दर्शन है जीवन को देखने का नज़रिया और उस बाबत काफी कुछ है इस किताब के पन्नों में। 9 देशों की घुमक्कड़ी के किस्से, वहां की लोगों/संस्कृति से अनुराधा के मन मे उठे ज़ायज़ सवाल, हमारी संस्कृति का लॉजिकल introspection और फिर ये सवाल भी की ये सब तो ठीक मग़र संस्कृति क्या ! करीने से पिरोये हुए ये पन्ने और उनमें गढ़े हुए शब्द और सवाल हमेशा साथ रहेंगे और शायद प्रेरणा का कारण भी होंगे...

मैंने किसी मोटिवेशनल स्पीकर कहते सुना था कि "सिंड्रेला के जीवन मे कभी कोई राजकुमार था ही नही " ऐसे ही मेरे व्यक्तिगत विचार में लेख़क का सफर उसका साध्य नही अपितु उसके मंतव्य का साधन था और यह साधन यात्रा के स्थान पर और कुछ भी हो सकता था क्योंकि लेखक की यात्रा का उद्देश्य किसी म्यूजियम, शहर व ईमारत को देखना नही अपितु उस आज़ादी को प्राप्त करना व महसूस करना था जो उसे उसके देश,समाज व संस्कृति में प्राप्त नही हुई ; यही कारण हैं कि यात्रावृत्तांत के हर बढ़ते पड़ाव पर हम शहर के बारे में कम, आज़ादी की और ज्यादा अग्रसर होते जाते हैं ; और अंत मे वह चीत्कार हमे सुनाई देती हैं जो लेखक की मन: स्थिति में अभी तक दबी हुई थी ।
यह यात्रावृतांत सभी यात्राप्रेमियो के साथ-साथ प्रत्येक उस लड़की को पढ़ना चाहिए जो आज़ादी के सपने को साकार करना चाहती है एवं हर उस लड़के को भी पढ़ना चाहिए जो महिलाओं की मन:स्थिति को समानुभूतिपूर्वक महसूस करना चाहता है ।

एक कम उम्र की लेखिका "अनुराधा बेनीवाल" की किताब "आज़ादी मेरा ब्रांड" पढ़ी। एक नयापन, एक ताजगी लिए हुए थी। ऐसे तो सभी को पढ़ना ही चाहिए पर महिलाओं और खासकर यात्रा पसंद महिलाओं को एकदम पढ़ डालना है इसे। ऐसे तो यात्रा वृत्तांत है पर शरीर से ज्यादा मानसिक आज़ादी के बारे में है ये किताब।
मुझे एक हिस्सा जो बहुत ज्यादा पसंद आया उसे शेयर कर रहा हूँ।
"तुम आज़ाद, बेफिक्र, बेपरवाह, बेहया होकर चलना। तुम अपने दुपट्टे जला कर, ब्रा साइड से निकाल कर , खुले फ्रॉक पहनकर चलना। जब तुम चलोगी तो तुम्हारी बेटी भी चलेगी और मेरी बेटी भी। जब सब साथ चलेंगी तो दुनिया को हमारे चलने की आदत हो जाएगी।
खुद पर यकीन रखते हुए घूमना। तू खुद अपना सहारा है। तुझे किसी सहारे की जरूरत नहीं है।
यह दुनिया अपनी मुट्ठी में लेकर घूमना। इसमें कुछ पाने के लिए घूमना। इसमें खो जाने के लिए घूमना। अपने तक पहुंचने के लिए घूमना , अपने आप को पा लेने के लिए घूमना।

Reading Azadi Mera Brand felt like having a quiet but powerful conversation with my own thoughts. As an Indian girl, written by an Indian woman, this book hits differently. It’s deeply motivating, inspiring, and honestly eye-opening.
It made me reflect on what it truly means to live a life of my own — to earn on my own, decide for myself, and not wait for permission, approval, or financial support from anyone. The idea of zero dependency and choosing independence over the “typical good girl” expectations is what stayed with me the most.
Though the author chose travel as her path, the inspiration goes far beyond that. It gently reminds you that whatever you dream of becoming, you can, even if it doesn’t fit into society’s predefined boxes — especially in a country like India.
A heartfelt, empowering read for any woman who wants more than what she was told to settle for.

आजादी… सबके लिए इसके मायने अलग हैं। महिलाओं के लिए थोड़ा मुश्क़िल है आजाद होकर जीना पर नामुमकिन नहीं। पता है..हमे थोड़ा ज़्यादा मेहनत करनी होती है पर ये मेहनत ही तो हमे सबसे ख़ास बनाती है।
अनुराधा बेनीवाल की ये किताब आपकी हौसलाअफ़ज़ाई करती है कि सारी जिम्मेदारियों को थोड़ी देर के लिये भूलकर ख़ुद के लिये जीना भी बहुत ज़रूरी है। और एक बार आप ऐसे जीना सीख गये तो जो आत्मविश्वास आप प्राप्त कर लेते हो वो अमूल्य है।
ये महत्वपूर्ण नहीं कि आप अकेले दुनिया घूम कर ही आज़ादी को महसूस करो। महत्वपूर्ण ये है कि आप वो काम बेज़िझक कर पाओ जो आप करना चाहते हो बिना किसी बंदिश कि … तभी आप सही मायनों मे आज़ाद हो।
एक यात्रा वृतांत जो आपको बहुत कुछ सिखाता है।💕

About this book, I believe I can write endlessly as this was one such read which made me travel with the author in my thoughts. The way of writing of the author is beautiful and will make you realize that a simple act which is happening around can be described in an artistic way, its just you must have that manner of presentation. The journey which the author has started can motivate every person to do those task which they have dreamt of but have not been able to.
A must-read for each and every person of you want to know what exactly happens on the street of “Videsh” i.e. Foreign Land.

नई हिंदी में ये अनुराधा बेनीवाल का सुंदर-सहज और विचारात्मक शैली में लिखा यात्रावृत्त यूरोप के कई देशों की संस्कृति, लोक और खासकर विचारों से हमें वाकिफ़ कराता है। किताब को पढ़ने के पहले और बाद में खुद में कुछ बदला सा महसूस होता है। शायद ये हर किताब के साथ होता है लेकिन इस किताब में जहाँ सोचने का भरपूर अवसर लेखिका अपने साथ ही लेकर चलती है ये संभावना और अधिक हो जाती है। किताब के बारे में और क्या ही कह सकते हैं जबकि नामवर सिंह जी ने राहुल और अज्ञेय के बाद अनुराधा के यात्रावृत्त लेखन को रखा है ।

किताब अभी अभी पूरी की । रात के २.५ बज रहे हैं। पता नहीं क्यों पर अपने आप इस किताब के लिए ४ स्टार हाथ से निकल गए हैं। कितना सही है इस आकलन में नहीं पता। पर ये किताब न पढ़े , इसका कोई कारण नहीं ढूंढ पा रहा हूं। अच्छी यात्रा रही। आप भी पढ़ियेगा। नए विचार आएंगे और कुछ पंक्तियाँ आपको वाकई सोचने में मजबूर कर देंगी। समय दीजियेगा उन विचारों को और निकल पड़ियेगा एक दूसरी यात्रा के लिए। लोग जो मुझमें रह गए।

यह पुस्तक एक शानदार यात्रा वृतांत के साथ-साथ स्त्री दर्शन पर लिखी गई कुछ एक पुस्तको मे से एक है।लेखिका ने जैसे 188 पृष्ठो मे यूरोप घुमा दिया हो।साथ ही साथ उन्होंने हमारे पुरुष प्रधान समाज पर कटाक्ष भी किया।लंदन से बुडापेस्ट तक यूरोप को अपने शब्दो से जीवंत करने की लेखन क्षमता बहुत कम लोगो मे है।
हर भारतीय स्त्री को यह पुस्तक पढ़नी चाहिए।

What a mind blowing book. Felt like my story, every Indian girl story in the beginning but how travel changes your perspective about different cultures, regions, people, etc.
I have personally used couchsurfing on your recommendation and loved it in US.
I could see Europe through her eyes first, then later on I saw it with my eyes.
