If you thought Ice Rift was fast-paced and action-packed, wait till you get a load of this sequel. The crashed alien vessel remains buried beneath the ice of Antarctica, but its position is unstable. If the competing governments don't act quickly, it could sink into the freezing ocean and be lost forever. No way are they going to lose this opportunity to salvage alien tech. To help them, they convince/ bribe/ coerce the various survivors of the first expedition into returning. Author Ben Hammot finds ways to send all the escapees from Book One back into the nightmare. Plus, we also follow the survival plight of one of the original team members who didn't make it out. And let me tell you, Ripley ain't got nothing on this gal.
The story is essentially one long, sustained action sequence, punctuated by snappy character beats and enough researched facts to lend the various operations an air of credibility. It blends elements of shoot-'em-up action, haunted house horror, and features more alien monsters than I think I've ever seen assembled in one book. It's bigger, faster and more action-packed than Book One. The only thing missing from the previous story is the mysterious shape-shifter alien, whose POV was my favourite part. It also provided the twist ending. We do get a substitute, though, which I won't spoil. Survival is the goal here, and every creature, whether human or alien, has to fight to get out.
I'd recommend reading Ice Rift first. That introduction to the alien ship and its various environments will give context to the events that unfold here. And it you like that story, you will certainly enjoy this one.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher with no obligation to write a review. My comments are my own honest opinion.
