Mamma mia, che volume! Forse avrei dovuto evitare di leggerlo subito, perché l'attesa fino a maggio per il numero 3 sarà molto lunga (potrei addirittura scegliere di andarmi a cercare le scan, cosa che faccio raramente). I temi principali sono tre:
- i rapporti di forza all'interno del carcere: la prigione è una bomba a orologeria pronta a esplodere. Il vero leader della fazione degli afroamericani si sta spegnendo a causa di una malattia e c'è chi preme per un approccio più violento. Dall'altra parte della barricata ci sono i chicanos, senza dimenticare i bianchi neonazi. Un bel mix esplosivo. Yuto si trova, suo malgrado, preso nel mezzo. Infatti, il poverino finisce per farsi una settimana in cella di isolamento per coprire Micky (povero Matthew....già il fatto che abbia resistito un volume, mi è sembrata una grazia) e per aver atterrato un pezzo grosso dei chicanos. Lì si trova a fare la conoscenza di Neto, altro detenuto in isolamento, che altri non è che Ernesto Rivera, gran capo dei chicanos: anche se non si sono mai visti di persona, Neto sembra prendere subito in simpatia Yuto, trattandolo con molto affetto anche una volta che entrambi ritornano nelle rispettive celle - una cosa che mi ha lasciato perplessa, perché dev'esserci sotto qualche motivazione, e che finirà per creare un mare di problemi con BB, il probabile futuro leader della fazione afroamericana. Quest'ultimo si prenderà la sua vendetta su Yuto proprio nelle ultime pagine del volume, approfittando dell'assenza di Dick e ricattando un povero vecchino in attesa della scarcerazione. Nel terzo volume potremmo vedere l'ira funesta di Dick, me lo sento;
- il discorso di Nathan sul business dell'industria carceraria: super interessante e anche molto attuale. Gli Stati Uniti, stando a quanto detto nel volume, sono il paese con la popolazione carceraria più numerosa al mondo, a dispetto di un tasso di criminalità di gran lunga inferiore a quello di moltissime altre nazioni. La privatizzazione delle prigioni gioca un ruolo fondamentale in questa crescita anomala, visto che i detenuti diventano una fonte di guadagno sia per la struttura carceraria in sé che per lo stato che ospita suddette strutture. Un giro di affari che però tende a mettere in secondo piano la cosa più importante, ovvero la missione riabilitativa: non si fa nulla per rieducare i carcerati, anzi, spesso si finisce in ambienti come Schelger dove l'odio razziale la fa da padrone, dove stupri e atti intimidatori di vario tipo sono all'ordine del giorno. Come fa notare Nathan, quello è un ambiente che finisce per influire in maniera negativa sull'animo delle persone. Lo stesso Yuto, poliziotto integerrimo e rispettoso delle regole, si trova a dover fare i conti con questo, scendendo a patti con la sua coscienza e accettando atteggiamente per lui inconcepibili. Ennesimo esempio di come siano i soldi a far girare il mondo, non il rispetto per le persone;
- lo sviluppo del rapporto tra Yuto e Dick: qui vediamo diversi momenti interessanti tra i due. Tanto per cominciare scopriamo il motivo per cui Dick è in carcere, per l'omicidio di un pubblico ufficiale, e spero che prossimamente ci venga raccontato di più sul suo passato, visto che non sembra né uno psicopatico né un uomo estremamente violento. Yuto vorrebbe conoscerlo meglio, sentirsi più vicino a lui, ma non sempre è possiblle, visto che Dick a volte lo tiene a distanza e non sempre si mostra amichevole nei suoi confronti. La notte passata da Yuto con la febbre sembra però abbattere alcune barriere: il ragazzo si confida con il compagno di cella, rivelandogli di essere stato un agente dell'antidroga e di essere dentro con l'accusa infamante di aver ucciso il suo partner - una confessione sentita che porta per la prima volta alla luce la tenerezza di Dick, che si prende cura di lui in maniera amorevole. I pensieri di Yuto sono abbastanza chiari. Quello che è certo è che Dick ha passato più tempo di Yuto in carcere e sa bene come funziona quell'ambiente; quindi sa bene che l'atteggiamento del ragazzo, a volte troppo diretto e intransigente, rischia di creargli un sacco di problemi. Lui non può essere al suo fianco tutto il giorno, cosa che gente schifosa come BB sa bene. Dopo lo stupro di Yuto, non so come va a finire la cosa, ma forse è la volta buona che Dick ribalta tutto. Comunque sia, attendo con ansia il terzo volume per ulteriori sviluppi.
In mezzo a tutto questo casino, prosegue anche l'indagine di Yuto alla ricerca del fantomatico terrorista chiamato Corvus. Dopo il buco nell'acqua fatto con quel nazistello schifoso di Gehren, rimangono altri tre probabili candidati. Chi sarà il prescelto?

Having just finished reading the novel I can appreciate how well done this adaptation is. The story flows along just like in the original, and the art is so pretty. The translation is only okayish, though. It's a matter of... translation philosophy, maybe, but often it feels too literal for me, and just sounds kind of unnatural. I definitely notice that more when I have read the original, though. I'm also not sure about the romanization of some of the names, but then again I totally suck at that sort of thing...
Anyway, great manga, great story, and now I'm going to dive straight into the second novel although the first one totally gave me nightmares...

Ça faisait un moment que ce manga me faisait de l’œil et j’ai enfin craqué. Je ne regrette pas, il est super. Les dessins sont très jolis et l’histoire prenante. D’ailleurs, je suis très frustrée par la fin et j’espère que le tome 3 sortira prochainement.
L’histoire se passe dans le milieu carcéral avec son lot de bagarres, meurtres, viol… Rien n’est montré, tout est suggéré mais ça reste dur. Ici, pas de romance même si on voit l’émergence de quelque chose entre Yûto et Dick, mais c’est loin d’être la priorité de l’auteur. Vivement la suite.

Toujours beaucoup de réalisme dans ce 2ème volume. Mon coup de cœur a été le thème du financement des prisons aux USA.

Band zwei der Deadlock Reihe hatte einiges an Spannung und gefiel mir auch schon um einiges besser als sein Vorgänger. Vor allem die neuen Bekanntschaften (Rivera) haben mir hier gut gefallen. zu der Story, Yuto fand eine Leiche und ist deswegen fest davon überzeugt zu wissen, wer der Terroristenboss ist. Dick hilft ihm dabei wieder aus der Patsche weswegen Yuto noch einmal davon kommt. Im Laufe des Bandes entwickelt sich Yuto dabei immens weiter da er sich immer mehr in den Häftling Yuto verwandelt und doch die wichtigsten Eigenschaften des Ermittlers behält. Das hat mir auch besonders gut gefallen. Yutos sowie Dicks Entwicklung zu beobachten und zu sehen, wie diese beiden einander näher kommen. Auch wenn mir Dick weiterhin ein Mysterium bleibt und die Frage warum hier noch nicht gelöst wurde.
Der Zeichenstil ist ebenfalls wieder gelungen. Mir gefallen vor allem die farbigen Cover sowie das Anfangsbild mit unseren vier bisher wichtigsten Charakteren. Vor allem Nathan rückt dabei nun immer weiter mit in den Vordergrund weswegen ich denke, dass er im Verlauf der Geschichte noch eine wichtige Rolle spielt.
Um noch einmal näher auf die Charaktere einzugehen fange ich bei unserem Protagonisten Yuto an. Nachdem ich im ersten Band nicht jede Handlung gut nachvollziehen konnte finde ich in diesem Band, dass er sich charakterlich schon weiter entwickelt hat als es vorher der Fall war. Man hat das Gefühl, dass er sich langsam in das Geschehen einfügt und dort nicht mehr allzu fremd ist und doch kann man ihm den Ermittler nicht austreiben. Er zeigt immer noch einen hohen Gerechtigkeitssinn weswegen er dazu neigt, auch Verbotenes zu machen um dieser Gerechtigkeit gerecht zu werden. Das bewunderte ich an ihm in diesem Band.
Wie bereits gesagt finde ich Dick weiterhin ein Mysterium und doch wird er mir sympathisch. Je verdächtiger er wirkt desto mehr glaube ich, dass er es nicht sein kann. Er wirkt zu aufrichtig als das er ein Terrorist sein könnte. Wie er sich um andere kümmert und versucht zwischen den Gangs den Frieden aufrecht zu erhalten und wie er hinter die Gefängniskultur blickt und Yuto dabei immer wieder rettet finde ich klasse.
In Band zwei überschlägt ein Ereignis das nächste weswegen vor allem das Ende mich den Atem anhalten ließ. Es gab einen richtig guten Spannungsbogen und man bemerkte die Brutalität die in den amerikanischen Gefängnissen herrscht. Aufgrund des großen Spannungsaufbaus und der besseren Charakterentwicklungen sowie einem nachvollziehbaren Verlauf der Handlungen gebe ich dem zweiten Band des Mangas vier von fünf Sternen.

This was a much more difficult read than Volume 1, since there are TWO instances of violent rape, one of which is the MC, Yuto.
Triggers - violence, racism, transphobia, violent rape, mis-gendering.
I get that Yuto being raped is supposed to be an important part of the story, however it lacked any real influence on the story that was told HERE. I feel like it probably had more of a long-lasting effect in the light novel, but here it was just pretty pointless, if I'm honest, EXCEPT as an excuse for Yuto to be vulnerable enough - emotionally and physically - for him to lean on Dick, then for them to have sex. Honestly, there's nothing I hate more than a character being raped and then turning to someone else for sex before they've even processed what happened to them. It makes light of rape in general, but also the seriously intense, violent attack that Yuto went through. I think the book/volume would have benefitted more from glossing over this - implying rather than showing in explicit detail. We did NOT need to see all the blood and fluids and tears for us to understand what happened or how it effected Yuto (or Dick)
For me, the best part of this volume - the redeemable part - was meeting Rivera for the first time.

Hätte den Band wohl nicht gelesen, wenn ich ihn nicht zusammen mit dem ersten Band gekauft hätte, welcher mir ja nicht wirklich gefallen hat. Der Manga lag also im Regal, ich war ein klein wenig neugierig und wollte es auch hinter mich bringen.
Und ja, das Ding war schon um Welten besser als Band 1. Ein bisschen twistier, ein bisschen besser erzählt, ein bisschen überraschend, ein bisschen packend, ein bisschen alles. Vor allem erschreckend und brutal und herzzerreißend. Zwar immer noch kein Megaknaller, wie ich finde, aber auch keine Zeitverschwendung. Und das Ende, holy moly, das nenne ich mal einen verefften Cliffhanger - und offenbar kein Band 3 in Sicht. Sh*t.

After the promising set-up of vol. 1, even though I still enjoyed this volume, I felt like much more side character exploration would've been possible as we started to delve deeper into the story - but the potential to me felt wasted. The protagonist's obsession with his cellmate somewhat annoyed me because, personally, I disliked that guy from the moment I saw him. Plus, he stole valuable screentime from other characters I'd have much liked to see more of.
That being said, the pacing was good, the illustrations were beautiful and I was certainly still intrigued by the mystery our protagonist keeps trying to solve.

Intrigue continues in prison when Yuto's chief suspect rapes and murders his 'girlfriend' and we learn that as much as it would be wonderful, he does not have the burn scars marking him as the terrorist mastermind, leaving our hero back at square one.
The relationship between Yuto and his cellmate Dick intesifies - as a reader its so obvious Dick's into him, yet Yuto continues oblivious, though the fact that Dick is revealed as a cop killer bothers him far more than it should.
This volume's pretty dark - there's two rapes, a stabbing and a murder. OMG have volume 3 on hand because it really leaves poor Yuto on a cliff-hanger.

Me voilà à présent en phase avec l'étiquette "Yaoi" qui caractérise le manga! J'avais pas plus aimé que ça mais certains d'entre vous avez appréciés... Que dire? Une prison. Que des hommes. Forcément, ça fait des pédés. Pas la moindre trace d'hétéro !! x)... On se dispute le petit nouveau, et tout... Bon, même si le manque de diversité baisse la note, certains passages un peu mignons la remonte. Je pense qu'on peut couper la poire en deux en disant que c'est une lecture acceptable.

Me esta gustando mucho la serie y a cada tomo que pasa me gusta más. Que se encuentren en la cárcel, que haya bandas dentro de ella... hace todo un escenario de salseos que merece mil la pena, además Dick tiene ese rollo misterioso que mola un montón y Nato parece ser un muy buen amigo. A ver como avanza en el siguiente tomo porque vaya final tiene este...

Il manga segue una evoluzione prevedibile, ma non perché è noioso, piuttosto perché l'autor* ha costruito bene la storia. Adesso non ci tocca che leggerla!

Oooft. This series is so much better than I was expecting! I thought I was just here for yaoi smut and instead I’m getting scathing social commentary on the prison industry and I’m HERE FOR IT. It’s a tough read but I’m so invested. Next one immediately.

Yûto s’interroge toujours pour Matthew, ne comprenant pas ce qu’il cache et surtout les sentiments étranges qu’il commence à ressentir en sa présence.
Ce tome est beaucoup plus trash et violent que le précédent qui lui était plus une introduction. J’ai apprécié cette montée en puissance. Il y est abordé des thèmes bien plus graves et durs. La fin brutale a de quoi secouer. On fait la connaissance de nouveaux personnages, pour la plupart des nouveaux alliés.
J’ai apprécié ce tome 2 qui est aussi intéressant que le premier avec toujours plus de suspense et de stress pour nos héros. J’ai commencé à comprendre où l’histoire allée nous emmener. En tout cas, j’avais déjà mes hypothèses sur certains points et personnages. Plus qu’à savoir si elles sont fondées sur la suite.
Ce tome est beaucoup plus trash et violent que le précédent qui lui était plus une introduction. J’ai apprécié cette montée en puissance. Il y est abordé des thèmes bien plus graves et durs. La fin brutale a de quoi secouer. On fait la connaissance de nouveaux personnages, pour la plupart des nouveaux alliés.
J’ai apprécié ce tome 2 qui est aussi intéressant que le premier avec toujours plus de suspense et de stress pour nos héros. J’ai commencé à comprendre où l’histoire allée nous emmener. En tout cas, j’avais déjà mes hypothèses sur certains points et personnages. Plus qu’à savoir si elles sont fondées sur la suite.

Even darker than the first volume, big trigger warning for sexual violence.

Un petit mot tout d’abord sur le dessin qui est tout bonnement splendide. Le graphisme n’est en général pas le point fort des yaoi mais, et c’est peut être parce qu’il y a ici un vrai scénario, il y a aussi un excellent travail, notamment sur les personnages.
En ce qui concerne les décors, on tourne en revanche vite en rond, mais comme l’action se passe en prison, c’est plutôt une bonne chose.
Niveau histoire, on retrouve Yûto qui tente de poursuivre son enquête pour trouver Corvin et ainsi sortir plus vite de prison.
Mais ses investigations sont bien sûr compliquées par mal d’évènements qui viennent le détourner de son objectif principal.
Dick, Nathan, Mickey et Yûto voient leur petit groupe aux prises de nombreux problèmes, à commencer par le meurtre de Grayson, mais surtout l’agression sur Matthew qui les bouleverse à différents degrés.
Dans la suite du premier tome, l’histoire avance tranquillement avec ses rebondissements.
Les mystères s’épaississent peu à peu autour des personnages et même si on commence à apprendre des éléments sur eux, leurs réactions sont parfois étranges.
J’ai apprécié, qu’au détour de ma lecture, ce manga en profite pour nous expliquer les aberrations du système carcéral des États-Unis grâce à Nathan.
Mais celui-ci semble avoir d’autres choses à cacher et comme je suis persuadée que Yûko a des erreurs dans sa liste, il est fort probable que Corvin se cache parmi ses amis.
J’ai hâte de lire la suite de ce magnifique manga pour savoir si mon raisonnement est juste !

Des héros beaux comme des dieux qui s'avouent à demi-mot leur attirance, une ambiance glauque dans un univers carcéral, de la violence qui arrive de manière assez brutale, et une avancée dans l'enquête de Yûto... Très bon. La suite va se faire largement désirer...
