Full disclosure: I am Ilia's husband, and the father of all four of her sons. Our sons. To say that this book was a labor of love for Ilia, is not really accurate. It was a driving passion of hers to get this information into the hands of as many pregnant, or planning to be pregnant, women as possible.
Even though I am not really a part of her intended audience, I am a part of her story, and I share her desire to have as many people get in touch with their bodies, and have information that can make people feel confident in the natural function of their body.
I think the book is highly readable, yet it blends spirituality and science seamlessly. I have always felt that the most spiritual moments in my life were being there for the birth of our four sons.
I highly recommend this book for everyone, including expectant dads. It is chock full of insight to the wonderful gift of childbirth. ~ Gary Blandina, Autism Coach, Special Education Teacher
It's a good read for all the mothers who want VBAC (Vaginal birth after c-section). Blandina give ideas how to use non-standard approaches to achieve the VBAC goal including how to use EFT.
After reading VBAC classics Birthing normally after a Cesarean or two and Silent knife, the level was set up high, because they discuss VBAC from a scientific perspective, with numbered references to numerous sources. This book is different, being a midwife's personal discussion on VBAC aspects, giving recommendations. I have read it very quickly, in just 2 days. In my opinion, some parts are quite esoteric and some pictures and quotes too... exaggerated. Also, the hospital environment with doctors is presented in a very negative light, leaving homebirth to be the only option for a truly uninterrupted natural birth. The book did deliver some advices how to facilitate a successful VBAC, however, there are many more ... not mentioned here. But I am the kind of person who goes in depth and relies more on scientific facts rather than feelings and emotions. Credits go to the author for discussing how to work with your fear.
Experts say to listen to the advice of others regarding topics related to pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing and I would say that reading this book has been no exception. Whether you whole-heartedly believe in Gaia, Mother Earth, and the existence of Akashic records (or reincarnation and retaining memories in DNA) or not, this book does offer quality insights into how to be better prepared for a vaginal birth after c-section (VBAC). I glossed over most of the spiritual stuff and focused on how to formulate a more empowered, informed birth plan. I learned how to center myself and was inspired to begin prenatal yoga to strengthen my body in preparation for childbirth. I would recommend this book for anyone curious about or seeking a VBAC, with the exception of the above-mentioned disclaimer.
Appreciated her research and the statistics/testimonies of successful VBACs she shared, but as a Believer in Jesus Christ I skipped and skimmed over quite a bit as she shares several New Age approaches to birth. It also felt very repetitive and like she was trying to convince the reader that all hospitals and doctors are striving to cut you open..and while I can understand why she believes that, it almost felt like she thought they were reading the book and I was witnessing her trying to fight them.. and honestly, I bet they aren’t reading it. Now, should they.. sure, but eventually her attitude was draining for me and I found myself struggling to want to finish it. Maybe some people would find her attitude inspiring, I’m not sure, but I was annoyed by the end.
Perfect for mothers who have the ultimate goal of VBAC/TOLAC versus a repeat c section. The author does write from a heavily pro home birth perspective and as though you will struggle in a hospital setting. I wish it was a little more positive in that light, but I understand that isn’t what the author experiences and this is also her own story journey.
I’m also not very interested in tapping so I skipped over majority of the sections speaking on that in the book as it’s not my method of choice.
This book is very informative for Mom's who want to have a VBAC. In fact, I would recommend it to anyone who is involved in a pregnancy, partners, doulas, OBGYN, nurses, employers, etc. I wish her social media groups were active. That would have given her 5 Stars.
