An insidious evil has taken root in the small town of Hope’s Peak, North Carolina…

In the midst of an internal investigation, the police department is thrown into chaos when Captain Frank Morelli is gunned down on his own front lawn. Detective Jane Harper suspects that someone is tying up loose ends—a conviction that only grows stronger when she witnesses the execution of another officer in broad daylight. With no one else to turn to, Jane seeks the help of psychic Ida Lane.

Ida thought she’d finally find peace after the death of the man who murdered her mother. But as the town emerges from the shadow cast by that serial killer, they discover that there is more than one monster hiding in the darkness. Desperate to lay her ghosts to rest, Ida puts her extraordinary skills to the test. Together, she and Jane must uncover the truth…or be permanently silenced like the rest.

The reader is treated to a second visit to the small town of Hope's Peak in North Carolina. Detective Jane Harper once again has to confront a serial killer ... one she killed, but at the time did not know that he had a partner.

This is one of those books that must be read in order. The first book is titled HOPE'S PEAK. STORM'S EDGE is a continuation.. one with many spoilers from the first book.

Some characters return ... some don't. And some characters lose their lives now. Police Captain Frank Morelli is one casualty, closely followed by another retired policeman. Someone seems to be cleaning the town of possible corruption ... or does it go deeper than that?

Once again, Ida Lane, a psychic agrees to help Jane ... but that help puts Jane's job at risk.

I can't say too much without giving away the entire plot. I will say it is a well-written, dark crime thriller. There are twists and turns, some small, some large that will leave the reader wondering how they missed the clues. The characters are deftly described and are credible.

It's a fairly fast read ... mainly because the reader won't want to put it down once they start reading.

Many thanks to TONY HEALY / THOMAS & MERCER / NETGALLEY for the advanced digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This is a really quick read so much so that I felt the story ended before it even really got going although I did enjoy it. It's the second in the series but the first that I've read and sometimes I felt that I missed out in a way as there are multiple references to past events of the first book.

With the story itself I quite liked the premise of using psychics in solving crimes and would have happily have had more of that in the book. I'm intrigued as to how the story will develop with the main detective being pregnant. Lots of plot twists and fun to try and spot just who were the corrupt police and part of the creepy underbelly of the town. The women police were really feisty and I loved (as a women) seeing that.

Overall a little too quick to be resolved for me but it's a good book and I'll probably look our for the next one

I would like to thank Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of Storm's Edge, the second novel in the Harper and Lane series, set in the fictional small American town Hope's Peak.

Hope's Peak Police Department is still reeling from the death of serial killer Lester Simmons and the discovery of rampant police corruption when first Captain Frank Morelli is gunned down outside his house then Detective Jane Harper sees ex Detective Bill Marshall assassinated the same way. Put on leave for her unorthodox investigative practices Jane is determined to pursue the killer and enlists psychic Ida Lane to help her.

I enjoyed Storm's Edge as something a bit different from my usual fare. The plot gallops along at a fast clip and thus holds the reader's interest. As it is a fairly short novel it doesn't have time to develop much depth so it's more action and psychic visions than anything else. I don't in this case see that as a negative as it's well done with a fast pace.

I have not read the first novel in the series, Hope's Peak, and I think this was a mistake as Storm's Edge is very much a sequel. I would have got much more from the read if I had and there now doesn't seem much point in going back to it now as so much is summarised here.

I'm not normally big on psychics as I have trouble giving them any credence but Ida's visions which mostly involve connecting with the dead and living rather than foreseeing the future (just as well as she gets into danger) are a useful plot device which allow the author to expand his characters in an unusual and interesting way. It works very well.

Storm's Edge is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

The way this book was written, it keeps you on edge and intrigued. Just when you think you have it figured out, you don't. Can't wait until the next one in the series.

I jumped at the chance to read the follow up to the fabulously spooky and dark "Hope's Peak," and couldn't wait to continue the journey with Harper and Ida. And while it's not as grim as it's predecessor, "Storm's Edge" is the perfect second book in this new series.

Just a note: this book picks up immediately where book one left off. As such, it's better to start with that book to understand the complete background situation. But trust me, you won't regret diving into this series.

So yeah - from this point on, because the books' plots are so intertwined: SPOILER ALERT FOR BOOK ONE!!

Ok, I'm starting now.

This book picks up a couple months after the events of book one, with Stu buried, Ida haunted by what she saw when Lester died and Jane Harper at the center of a swirling Internal Affairs investigation. Then, two police officers are gunned down and Harper finds herself a target as well. Will Hope's Peak be able to finally exorcise its demons and deliver justice? Or will evil continue to reign?

This book had amazing suspense and tons of twists and turns. I love that the author doesn't mind "going there," as overused as that phrase is. He doesn't hesitate to kill off a character or reveal some really dark secrets. It adds this tension to the plot that keeps you going.

I also continued to love Harper and Ida's partnership in this book. Both characters are likable and relatable - I really find myself rooting for them.

I can't wait to see where this series goes next, and I will definitely be along for the ride.

I did not read the first book in this series and wish that I had prior to reading Storm's Edge. I would have loved to have had the background on the characters. Storm's Edge was a fast paced read & I finished it in one sitting. Action.... corruption.... psychic visions ...strong heroine....all made for a good read that I would recommend to anyone that enjoys mystery/thrillers.

***I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinions.

Hope's Peak is a small town that is not immune from controversy. Their supposedly corrupt Police Captain is gunned down in his own front yard. Shortly after, a retired detective is gunned down in a grocery store parking lot.
Jane Harper, our lead protagonist, sees the second shooting, but the new Captain wants nothing to do with Harper's "infavorable" ways of investigating. Working from behind the scenes, with her friend (and local physic) Ida Lane, Harper is taken down a road of police corruption.

I did not read the first one, as this was an ARC I randomly got accepted for. I may have had a better understanding of the characters if I did, but due to Ida's visions you got a pretty clear scoop on the background.

Disclaimer before I provide my review: I received a copy of Storm’s Edge through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest review.

Storm’s Edge is the second novel in a series, the first in the series is Hope’s Peak. I highly recommend reading Hope’s Peak before reading Storm’s Edge. While you do not need Hope’s Peak first, many of the events that unfold in Storm’s Edge are a continuation of events that take place in Hope’s Peak. Therefore, they are best read in order.

Jane Harper is a detective with the Hope’s Peak Police Department. She relies on her gut instincts to help her solve cases, even though many within the police department find her methods unconventional. In the first novel, Hope’s Peak, Harper is tasked with tracking down a serial killer. While trying to solve the case, Harper is brought in on a town secret. One that she may have to expose in order to solve her case. Harper is able to solve the case with the help of the town recluse, Ida Lane, who has a special talent for reading people. When the dust settles at the end of the case, no one is the same.

Cue Storm’s Edge, which picks up with the aftermath of Harper’s case. No one is safe once the truth is exposed. There are forces at play that will stop at nothing to protect their secrets. Police officers are being targeted by seemingly random violence. Harper is put on leave, while Internal Affairs investigates her last case. Even though she may be on the bench, she can’t just sit on the sidelines while police officers are being targeted. Especially when she becomes a target herself. Together Harper and Lane must finish what they started in Hope’s Peak and expose more of the town’s secrets.

Both novels are quick easy reads. Not an overly sophisticated writing style, and some of the dialogue is quite laughable. However, they were interesting enough to keep me wanting to know more. Storm’s Edge ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, wondering if Harper & Lane have uncovered ALL of the town’s secrets or if they still have more work to do.

Hope’s Peak, NC. What was William “Bill” Marshall (retired Hope’s Peak PD Detective), discussing with Captain Frank Morelli (husband/father, Hope’s Peak PD)?
Dr. Kandy tells Detective Jane Harper (expectant mother, Hope’s Peak PD) the fetus is doing just fine.
Detective Gerry Ramirez (60+, Hope’s Peak PD), Albert “Albie” Goode (Forensics, gay), Mike McNeil (ME), Kara (Mike’s asst.), were at the crime scene.
Captain Morelli had been gunned down.
Detective Lizzy Freehan (Hope’s Peak PD acting captain) arrived shortly after.
As Detective Harper heard/watched in horror Bill Marshall is shot/killed.

Detective Dempsey (IA officer) & Detective Sinclair (IA officer) are doing the allegation cases of corruption that have occurred in the Hope’s Peak PD department.
Captain Lizzy Freehan (50+) is present.
Mayor Hal Crenna was making the public statement about the death of Captain Morelli.
Will the murders be solved & someone brought to justice?

Warning: This book is for adults only & contains extreme violent or graphic adult content. It may be offensive to some readers.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written cop thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great cop thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Hell is empty, and all the devils are here. On these wicked shores, if a man wants to fulfill his vision, to overcome the devils, he has to become the villain.
The Bad man.
The Monster.

Hope Peak does not have much hope when the police department has been accused of years of cover up. Who is behind the cover up and how deep does it go?

Detective Jane Harper has her own ghosts as she is pulled into this conspiracy. The brutal death of her partner in the take down of the town's own monster Lester. The police department is now being investigated and in the process of the investigation, several of Harper's co-workers and friends have been gunned down and the stakes keep getting higher. Harper uses the help of Ida Lane, the daughter of one of the victims. She has a gift (she can speak to dead people) but she is terrified. Will she be able to overcome her fear to face the monster within the town?

Since this is the 2nd of a series, I may have not been able to establish a connection with the characters and the town. However, it does have shock value that did seem to be just for shock value and not compelling to the monster within. A compelling monster is one that you relate to in some form. The monster with issues. Instead he was monster of chaos.

The series holds promise of a partnership between Harper and Lane for future cases that could be compelling indeed.

A Special Thank You to Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Well then. Let me be perfectly honest here for a moment. I did not realize that this was the second book in a series until I was writing this review. And after reading the synopsis of the first book I have to wonder just how much of a cross-over between the two there is.

That being I (obviously) have not read the first one. However, that fact did not keep me from being able to understand and follow along with this one. I feel as though the reader gained enough background knowledge between character recollections as well as Ida's visions that it is easy to figure the basic players and their stories.

Speaking just of this story, I felt it was an interesting concept and a well executed story. By the synopsis, I was expecting something a bit more on the paranormal side so I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the "insidious evil" was something more human (even if that somehow made it worse). I found the pace to be steady, with just enough new things being thrown into the mix to keep the reader invested and interested. I would read more from this author.

Overall, I am sure this story will appeal to those who enjoy a good thriller novel.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I won a e-book version of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I didn't realize it was the second book in the series, but I still felt I knew the characters and the storyline was very good. I will read the first book to learn what I may have missed out on about the characters. This was a thrilling page turner, with a tough female detective Harper that uses her friend Ida's psychic skills to help find serial killers. Ida's own mother Ruby was murdered by one of them. There is a history of police corruption in the town, the Police chief is gunned down in front of his home, a retired detective is gunned down in front of Harper. Then shots are fired into Harper's apartment. A recent serial killer is paroled from prison and another dead girl is found in the woods. Will the good guys catch the killer or killers before the body count rises? Read it, you won't be disappointed.

A needed break from summer reads!

I read this in one sitting. I never do that; I usually like to make a good story last. But this caught my attention right away. I'm fascinated by psychics, so it was fun.

Please don't take the 5 stars to mean that it's Hemingway or Fitzgerald, but it's well written and kept me engaged. Plus, the main culprit was someone I didn't suspect. That almost never happens!

Question for the author: have you ever been to North Carolina? Mentioning a "beach" was kind of weird when you hadn't set up the location for that in any way. Kind of out of the blue and felt awkward. BUT, most people don't live so close to NC and will never know the difference. Also, it's possible I just missed any coastal reference early on. ☺

This page turner combines serial killers, police corruption, a psychic, and a dogged female investigator. Jane Harper pushes aside small town politics and skepticism to work effectively with Ida Lee, a psychic, to solve the murders of officers in her department. Ida is a believable character and Jane is terrific. This is a very plot driven novel (you get a good sense of the characters but they aren't the main focus) which makes it perfect for travel. Healey is a good story teller who writes clearly and directly. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Unusual Suspects!

Tony Healy caught me with the first Harper and Lane book and continued to enthrall with this second novel. His descriptive writing is evocative and economical at the same time. He weaves the past into the current story, bit by bit, as you do when you meet a new friend, making the story feel natural. Good mystery with Ida's gift adding some eeriness. The characters are well founded, demonstrating caution and fear while acting courageously....no cardboard heroes here.

Thanks for a good read...can't wait for #3!

Great story...

...that extends the first segment, but is often better. Harper is pregnant and Lane is beginning to see that Lester having been killed hasn't stopped the evils of the town. She see's something amiss about the mayor and begins to Snoop. Meanwhile, Harper is pregnant and is suspended from the police force. But Harper and Ida Lane keep at it until both are kidnapped by the Mayor and his cop cronies. Read Storm's Edge. It's worth the time.

This could have been a top-flight mystery; there are sections, particularly involving the villain (won’t spoil it) where the author’s prose is tight and the background presented gives the reader deep insight. For the bulk of the novel, however, the prose resembles a plot summary rather than a story narrative. There were many opportunities to expand the text, to veer away from pure exposition and employ a show-don’t-tell approach.

I won this in a goodreads giveaway, this 8s the first thing I've read by the author, and the first book I've read in this series.

This was a quirky and interesting story that may have made more sense to me if I had read a book from earlier in the series. Having said that, this was an easy read with interesting characters. I think the story would lend itself to a good movie.

Very good, but...

I felt I was missing something by not having read the first book in this series, which I believe is Hope’s Peak. I try to read series in order but I wasn’t aware that there was one that preceded Storm’s Edge. I think it would have made this book more enjoyable.

This is a review of the audio edition: I wasn’t crazy about the story and the characters became lack luster. Ida Lane has a lot of potential but it was meh... Not a good follow-up to #1 but I will likely move on to #3 in the series.

Sweeping excitement and a strong finish.

Jane and Ida are a team, a team worth the name. As the story progresses each finds depth in their convictions and grows.

The ending could be another beginning, but the author only knows if the team will continue in another novel.
