A woman on a mission to save the elephants… An ex-convict who won’t part with his land… When their passions and goals collide, the crash is volatile.
Sara Graham has no idea what she is getting herself into when she uses her forbidden art to protect the near-extinct elephants and their habitat in the Knysna forest, South Africa. From the minute she sets foot in the woodcutters’ bar, she endangers her life. The gift hunters who would kill for her art are not the only threat. The wood smugglers will sooner murder her than let the National Parks Board ranger stand in their way. Falling for woodcutter and ex-convict, Wayne West, only further complicates matters. Can Sara trust a man convicted of the cruelest of murders?
Danger comes to town with a green SANParks vest and a tight body. Wayne knows Sara is all kinds of trouble from the first time he lays eyes on her in the bar. Alone, she doesn't stand a chance. If he protects her, he will not only be branded as a traitor with the woodcutters, but he may also lose his job, and worse, his land. That is to say if they make it out alive. Even then, can he forgive her for taking the only thing he has left?
This book contains explicit language and consummated love scenes. Reader discretion is advised. Although this is Book 7 (ANIMAL) of the paranormal erotic Seven Forbidden Art series, the story also reads as a standalone. For best reading enjoyment and character insight it is recommended that the series be read in chronological order.
Charmaine loves to write dark and edgy romance that will melt both your e-reader and your heart.
She's a mom of two teenagers, an adorable dog, and a dominant cat. Her country of birth is South Africa where many of her stories play off. Her French husband kidnapped her to the south of France where she currently lives with her family.
When she's not writing, you'll find her in the kitchen baking cakes or in the gym lifting weights (because ... all those cakes!).
This series is só good,it should be forbidden! I don’t know how Charmaine Pauls does it,but each story is a work of art. The emotions, the suspense, the red thread that continues throughout….it’s all so beautifully done, you can’t help, but love it. And i was the lucky girl to get the ARC of the latest addition to this series,Scapulimancist!
Sara was determined to succeed in her mission to save the Knysna forest and its inhabitants. But it was a tough job, even with her “gift”. Because she’d have to tell people to leave the land they’d been living on for so long. And because there were men with bad intentions. Not only to destroy the forest and sell the wood, but if word got out what kind of “gift” she had, they’d sell her too! If they didn’t kill her because of it…..
Wayne knew trouble when he saw it,and when Sara walked into the local bar,all he could do was brace. After all he’d been through, the last thing he should do,was get involved in whatever problems she was going to cause. But at the same time,he couldn’t help, but do his best to protect her from the ones that tried to harm her.
And somehow, along the way, they both seemed to develop feelings for eachother. Feelings that couldn’t go anywhere….right? Because of Wayne’s past, because of Sara’s “gift”,and because she’d probably leave once her job was done…..if they made it out alive.
Wayne needed someone to believe in him,to see him for the man he was,and not for what he thought he’d done. To make him want to embrace life again, and more importantly,to make him want to take a chance on love again. Sara needed someone to love her for who she was,”gift” and all. To stand by her, protect her,and embrace her. Misunderstandings and enemies threatened to tear them apart, and my heart ached for them. I was só glad when the team arrived to save the day,but they couldn’t fix everything…. Some things they had to do themselves, and preferably before it was too late!
This is such a great addition to this already fabulous series, and i loved every second of it. Even if at times my heart hurt,so badly, for these two. Even if at times i feared they wouldn’t make it out alive, let alone find a way to stay together. It is one of those stories that will stay with me for a very long time…..
This book finally ended my three-star-reading slump, so I'm super grateful to it for that.
The first sex (oral) scene was so good; I really thought Sarah was going to lose her virginity then, and I was digging it. The climax/when was very exciting, and I thought to myself how I must finish the book tonight! I love lions, so I loved their inclusion in the story. This is the first time I've read a book where
Charmaine is an excellent writer, and I'm looking forward to read the other books in the Seven Forbidden Arts series!
Sara’s job isn’t an easy one but she has a special talent that is required to get it done. When she gets into some trouble at the local bar Wayne helps her out and thus begins their desire for each other. Unfortunately, her job also includes taking something vital and important to him. Along with their desire they are now at odds with each other as he vows to fight her every step of the way.
I loved the conflict and yearning between these two. Her ability to be so capable and yet accident prone at the same time was charming. Wayne was torn between feelings of guilt from the past and condemnation in the present and knew that he could never live up to what she needed, even without their struggle.
This book was fast paced and had so much action and drama as well as excellent descriptions of the land, the animals and the people that wished to not only protect them but to claim it as their own. I absolutely loved this story and Ms. Pauls has gained a new fan and stalker as a result.
The writing and characters are wonderful as always. Cain and company don’t enter until the end so it’s very much it’s own story.
My problem was I became too invested. Surely that’s not a bad thing you’re thinking? Not normally but…
West is such a great guy despite being dealt a very crappy hand. I loved him and got frustrated by his life and acceptance of it. Not that’s there’s much he could do but I hated it nonetheless. And regardless of how many times I told myself it would be worth it in the end. I still struggled.
Sara. Where do I start. I liked her as well but her naivety wore on me a bit. I think at this point I was so invested in West. He was bending over backwards to make sure she’s safe. And she was (unbeknownst to her most of the time) making it more difficult for him. He’s lost so much and been through so much. His land as well?
It turned into a constant battle for me. It’s an emotional read, I went through the full range. And I’m not sure I can honestly say it was a book I enjoyed reading. I was glad I had, I liked the ending and it’s one that will stay with me. Now I’m really looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author.
This is book seven in the series and once again this was a well-written enjoyable experience. What I especially appreciate about this series is how different each book is it's not the same tired formula used each time and every book involved feels so unique and fresh with its own voice. This takes place in South Africa and our heroine here is Sahara whose gift is the ability to communicate with animals. Sara is employed by the South African national park and her job designation instantly paints a target on her back making her highly unpopular with the locals.
When she's sent to reclaim a parcel of land and also locate some elusive elephants, her path collides with Wayne. The land she is here for belongs to him, he is Wayne West, a convicted murderer who despite his supposed history steps up and rescues Sara from danger and despite having differing agendas that initially put them at loggerheads these two had such delicious chemistry together.
There's danger heat and passion and we have some brief cameos from prior characters in the series. This is connected in such a way that it brings this story into the fold but at the same time it also only felt loosely connected and pretty separate.
This series is a good one and though it has some paranormal style elements it mostly reads as a contemporary romance and the paranormal part is a small one. I do recommend this series highly it's a firm favourite of mine. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of The Scapulimancist.
The eighth book of the seven forbidden arts with Sarah telling us her story, her secrets, her thoughts and of course her feelings for the 'bad boy' Wayne who was also enjoyable to read his thoughts...
Once again the author created a stunning story who sucked me in from the first page it's no secret that I'm in love with the series and this one was not an exception in fact it's one of my favorite of the series. The plot develops steadily keeping the suspense throughout the story, in addition it has some wow scenes, twists and lots of steam, hot scenes between Wayne and Sarah!!
Well as for our lovely couple i can say for sure that they had an explosive chemistry and they complete each other perfectly Sarah with her sassiness and Wayne with his bad boy/caveman/"knight" acts.
I won't spoil anything but as you already know by the blurb Sarah has a big secret, a powerful weapon she is a Scapulimancist which means that she can control animals...(wow)..that been said i have to mention that her scenes acting her gift were really magical and brought a powerful vibe in the book!!
Oh what journey indeed..i really liked, I certainly recommend it and I'm looking forward to read the next amazing (read the blurb already won me) story the author will create!!
Kindly provided with an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review......
This was a well anticipated and exciting seventh book in this series and boy oh boy was it everything I thought it would be !!!
It was Wayne and Sara's book and the fact our leading lady was the one with the supernatural gift made me delighted !!. Of all of the animals featured - elephants !!! One of My Ultimate favorite animals in the world !!. That clinched it for me. Anyhow Sara is the animal whisperer and she slowly puts her trust and heart on the line with Wayne. Will he let her down or will he be the man she deserves. Let's face it Wayne's past is sketchy at best, but is he older and wiser ?
YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES AS THEY ARE TRULY A WORK OF GENIUS !!!. From page one until the end you are enthralled !!! I just want more, more, more and I am NOT being greedy - its essential for my happiness ;0)
Charmaine you are FIRST CLASS AS AN AUTHOR !! Well done does not cover it !!!
Scapulimancist is the 7th book in the forbidden Arts Series, and it was a great addition and exciting read!
This story takes place in South Africa where we meet Sara Graham who is a Park Ranger in the South African National Parks. She is blessed with the forbidden art gift of communicating and controlling every type of animal she comes across. On this mission she has been tasked to find the elusive Knysna Elephants which are almost extinct and to protect them.
When the locals learn of her mission her life is threatened and it is Wayne, the ex-con who was convicted of murder, who comes to her aid. He has done his time and is getting by working for the man who bought his farm and land whilst he was in jail. Unbeknown to him when he first meets Sara, is that she has also come to tell him that his land will be taken from him to ensure the safety of the elephants of the Knysna forest and its inhabitants.
Their attraction towards one another was strong and intense and every time Wayne tried to keep his distance and not act upon his desire for her his will was broken. They were so steamy together and I like the slow intense build up to their coming together fully.
This story was fast paced and exciting with a few twists and turns along the way. I loved when Sara used her forbidden art to defend herself and those around her. It felt so real and magical.
It was a bonus catching up with Cain and the rest of the paranormal crime task force and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
Sara is one brave woman who is on a quest to save elephants from being completely destroyed by poachers and woodcutters who destroy their natural habitat. Day one of her entering the city, she lands herself in a bit of trouble with locals not too happy with her there. But she also meets Wayne. Another local who isn’t exactly thrilled she’s there either but can also appreciate a beautiful woman and warns her to go back home before other locals mess with her.
Things quickly take a turn when she was drugged with mushrooms and Wayne ends up saving her and taking her back to his place to help her wait till the drugs leave her system…
This is an enemies to lovers suspenseful romance. What Wayne doesn’t know is she’s their to ask him to give up some of his land for the elephants… what she doesn’t know is he lost most of his land to a greedy man, got out of prison not that long ago, and he’s doing everything he can to rebuild his life and stay out of trouble.
So when they both find out the truth about each other, they definitely start butting heads. There’s a lot of sexual tension. The heroine of the story is a virgin. Which makes things extra spicy when she takes the initiative and keeps going for Wayne who… eventually caves….
Scapulimancist is a word I’ve never heard of before until this story. Sara can manipulate animals. She can’t read their minds or figure out what they want or need but she can tell them that she is a safe person and tells them what to do. So for example if she needs help because she’s getting attacked, she can seek out maybe a snake or a bunch of insects to attack her enemy….
There’s definitely some plot twists. It does leave off on a really cute HEA. 4/5⭐️
Sahara “Sara” Graham is a South Africa National Parks ranger tasked with saving the vanishing elephants of the Knysna Forest sanctuary in South Africa. Wayne West is a well-meaning woodcutter with a sinister criminal past, who works for the very people that Sara is set to confront.
It’s complicated! There may be too many social and political reasons for them to avoid each other but whenever Sahara and Wayne are together, they spark compulsively like match and tinder. These two simply can NOT keep their hands off each other!
Sara is so single-minded in her pursuit of protection for endangered elephants, that her actions smack of naïveté and innocence. Combined with her sex appeal, her domestic ineptitude, and her dedication to a goal that would essentially strip him of his heritage, Wayne West has a very confusing battle waging within. Meanwhile, Sara has her own deadly secret that she is withholding from Wayne while simultaneously negotiating him into trusting her with his dark past.
This is a paranormal romance with a lot of human interest in the first half and loads of suspenseful revelation in the second half. I appreciated learning about the challenges faced by threatened species in South Africa, from elephants and lions to precious yellowwood trees, to wildflowers (like Jamesbrittenias) that are all losing their natural habitat. Cain Jones and the Forbidden Arts team make an appearance but feel very peripheral to this story. This is one of a few weaknesses in this story, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Addendum 2022:
My beta-reading of Scapulimancist for Second Edition the launch has been so enjoyable that I am bumping my original rating from 4.0 to 4.5. The sentiments expressed above still hold, but Sara and Wayne’s natural chemistry and unavoidable magnetism are more pronounced for me on the re-read.
I am absolutely hooked by this series. Each stories tells us about a different supernatural being, and no not vampires and weres. The stories are so extremely unique and are nothing like you've ever read before. In this installment we follow Sara who is a scapulimancist, or someone that can speak with animals mentally. She's on a mission to look for exotic elephants that no one has been able to find. While on this journey she meets a couple of rough guys who are bound and determined to do harm to her. Wayne, the city bad boy, ends up saving the day several times. The story ends up being a romance novel at heart, with quite a bit of action thrown into the plot. Fantastic read that sets it's own tone and pace and pulls you in from the beginning and leaves you wanting more.
This book is just amazing. Another get story in an amazing series that can be read as a stand alone. This book has complex characters and storyline and had me at the edge of my seat. The emotions you feel with this book will leave you breathless. It hooks you in and leaves you wanting more.
I am not a huge fan of reading books out of order. I have a crazy case of OCD that just won't put up with that kind of non-sense. However, I was able to power through and read the seventh book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series by Charmaine Pauls!
I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM THAT I GAVE IT A CHANCE!
This was my first Charmaine Pauls book and it definitely will not be the last. I can't wait to read the first six books while (un)patiently waiting for the release of the eighth book.
In this story, we meet Sara and Wayne. Sara is a ranger with the South African National Parks board and, thankfully, she really has a way with animals. Wayne is an introverted ex-con who is trying to get back to his life after serving time for murder.
The two meet after Sara has an unfortunate run in with two of Knysna's most notorious troublemakers, Nelis and Thinus Theron. They make a living as Woodcutters, like most people in town, and they harbor a pure hatred toward the SAN Parks Board. Nelis and Thinus decide to welcome Sara to town by drugging her food with mushrooms before she takes off on a hike in the woods. They follow her with plans to attack her, but Wayne is hot on their trail and rescues Sara before too much damage is done. When he realizes that she was drugged, he takes her back to his cabin to get her cleaned up and let her sleep it off.
"There were a few scrapes over her ribs and a cut on her hip, but nothing serious. He sat down on the edge of the sofa and dabbed disinfectant with a cotton swab onto the red lines that marred her golden skin. She stared at the fire, not at his face, so he let his eyes wander over the curves of her body. Lying like that with her knees slightly drawn up, the dip of her waist emphasized the swell of her hips and breasts. Her body looked like the gentle surf of a lake on a windy day. In the light of the fire her tanned complexion had a warm glow. The underside of her breast peeked from the towel. An image of the curve, small and firm, popped into his mind. Her areolas would be dark and her nipples hard, sweet on a man’s tongue. Desire filled his veins, flooding his brain and hardening his dick. It had been too long."
Later that night, after the drugs have worn off a bit, Sara drops a bomb on Wayne about why her current assignment has brought her to Knysna. She needs to locate the near-extinct elephants that roam a certain part of land in that area. Wayne's land, to be exact. She informs him of a proposition that the SAN would like him to consider. The land that Wayne owns is the only reminder that he has left of his family and he is hell-bent on keeping it in the family.
Despite Wayne's stubbornness and outright admissions that he will fight her tooth-and-nail before ever giving up his land freely, Sara can't fight the attraction that is growing toward Wayne.
"He’d given her a pair of his boxer shorts, sweatpants, and a T-shirt. The fabric smelled of him, of cedar and pine. It was the intoxicating scent she’d noticed in the truck, when he’d driven her to his cabin. She’d also noticed his hard body and the size of his enormous hands as he’d taken care of the cuts on her skin. Her body had taken notice of him in ways it had never noticed a man. Moisture had pooled between her legs and her breasts had tingled when he’d run his fingertips over her sides, but he was a stranger and she was drugged. Worse, he was the owner of the land she had to reclaim. Best not to notice his outdoorsy, addictive smell, or his big, callused hands."
Then, when some out-of-towners travel to Knysna for a hunting expedition start mysteriously dying, everyone in town is pointing the finger at Sara. Between Wayne's sordid past, the land reclamation, and the accusations over the hunter's deaths, will Wayne and Sara's connection be severed before it has a chance to grow?
An amazing, mysterious, fun read that I wasn't able to put down! Charmaine Pauls knocked it out of the park!

Ever since she came into her own power, Sara Graham has kept it a secret. Her gift is a forbidden art, one that allows her to communicate with any and every animal she comes across. A National Parks Board ranger, she's promised herself that she'll do everything possible to save what's left of the elephants. Though many say the animals don't exist, she knows they're very much alive. Determined to fight for what she believes in, she soon takes a stand against those intent on tearing her world asunder.
Another wonderful addition to the Forbidden Arts series, Scapulimancist delves into the secrets surrounding what it's like to communicate with animals. For Sara, she can never tell anyone who and what she is. The consequences of doing so are deadly, something she refuses to allow to happen by any means necessary. Mind you, secrets don't stay buried for long. Nevertheless, she'll protect what she deems hers, including the animals she communicates with and those she comes to love.
Charmaine has given us more of the world she's creating surrounding these forbidden arts. If you haven't had a chance in starting this wonderful series, I truly recommend it. Each book entails the secrets surrounding a forbidden art. Though each novel is a standalone, they provide enough detail to bring the reader up to speed on past books and their subsequent characters.
That's what makes this series so wonderful. You learn about new characters and a new art, while having the rest of the cast from each prior book make appearances. Which character pops up in what book, you'll have to learn that for yourself by diving into each Forbidden Art novel. Trust me, you won't regret doing so.
Now that we got to book number seven in the Forbidden Arts series (if you've read the previous books) we kind of know what to expect, however, this doesn't make the book any less exciting.
This time we travel to South Africa, where the sweet Sara uses her gift to protect animals and its habitats. Her life changes when she meets sexy and mysterious Wayne West. A man with a dark past, an ex-convicted with a rough personality but a good heart once you get to know him. As usual, the relationship is full of tension at first especially because Sara's work goes against Wayne land. A serious of episodes with a group of bad guys will make them closer and Wayne's desire to protect her will grow strong.
The writer has the ability to always create tridimensional characters who look real and have awesome personalities. Their interaction is awesome and it's easy to get lost in the scenes. The passion is hot!!! I can only say: SEXY! my kindle almost burn due to the heat of some sentences.
There were a few revelations that didn't have the impact I would have expected because I sort of saw them coming. The writing style was as good as always. I cannot wait to read the next book.

Why have I waited so long to read on of your books Charmaine? I throughly enjoyed it and loved the Sci-Fi aspect of this book.
Even though this is book 7, I have not read any of the others, I did not feel lost or unable to follow along. This can be read as a standalone. Here we meet Sara (Sahara) and Wayne West.
Sara comes to Wayne's town and only ends up causing trouble due to her position with the National Park and Wayne is there to save her. But does Sara truly need saving? Sara has a way with animals, which I really loved!!!
Wayne has a rocky past and a bad reputation with his home town, so can Sara really trust him when she needs too?
Wayne and Sara start to form a bond, sexual attraction and hopefully get through what is happening in his town and for Sara to be able to do the job she was sent there to do. Yet, her job may cost her relationship with Wayne.
I liked this book and it continued to keep my interest throughout the book and I did love Sara's art she was able to perform. Want a book to take you away from the standard rich billionaire's? Here's one for you!!
Scapulimancist by Charmaine Pauls is a new favorite of mine in the series!
This is the 7th book and I believe the last in her Seven Forbidden Arts Series, and while each book can be read as a standalone, supporting characters and their abilities do overlap and can at times get confusing.
I think I loved this book the most because not only was the storyline incredible...both heartbreaking and sexy, but there was also the least amount of overlapping of characters from her other books in the series which minimized my confusion (since I have only read I believe 4 out of the 7 books over long periods of time and my memory is not as good as it used to be). I especially loved the setting, Knysna, South Africa, and how well Charmaine painted a picture making me feel like I was actually in the forest witnessing the beauty and the animals for myself.
If you are a fan of hot steamy reads uniquely written using unique, fun paranormal twists, I highly recommend checking out Charmaine Pauls' Seven Forbidden Arts Series!
Reviews on good reads , Amazon , the book addicts (fb)
It took me just a little to get into just to figure out who was who kinda thing ..but holy mother .. Once I caught on I was hooked !! This is another fantastic book by Charmaine !! I absolutely loved it .. I haven't read all the books in the series yet .. But I'm working my way through! you will not be disappointed..I loved the back story with the characters. And the romance in this story is unbelievable I freaking loved the way it evolved. Some of the chapters end in kinda of a cliffhanger and your like whoa just one more chapter I have to go to bed ..and then you find yourself saying ok just one more again. Lol it's great people!
Another excellent novel from Charmaine Pauls - Scapulimancist follows Sara and Wayne's turbulent relationship. Despite the many ups and downs, there's an overarching inevitability that they will end up together.
the world of supernatural seems to have opened up, everyone in this small town seemed to know what Sara is-even if they didn't understand it. There was also the unexplained aquisition of Gila venom. How did that happen?
nonetheless, I enjoyed the story with its twists and turns. I especially enjoyed the moments with the elusive elephants. it was told beautifully.
Another interesting story in the Forbidden Arts series, Scapulimancist can be read as a standalone novel. This is Sara and Wayne's story. There was action, deceitful characters, some twists and turns and an interesting plot. I loved the description of the animals especially the elephants. I loved Wayne and Sara together, they were perfect for each other. However I found Sara to be too naive throughout the novel putting herself in unnecessary danger. I did enjoy her use of her art. It was quite amusing at times but I wished she used it some more in the book. This was a good read.
A great, suspenseful and sexy story! Sarah hits the ground running in her efforts to save the elephants and doesn't stop until the end! There's plenty of mystery and heart ache to keep you on your toes. I loved it! 5 stars!
I’m a big fan of Ms. Pauls’ each time I finish one of her books I think she’s out done herself. After reading Scapulimancist I’m again saying she’s freaking out done herself. I loved everything about this book! It’s suspenseful and drama filled, it’s sexy and steamy and I just couldn’t get enough. The descriptions of places, animals and the environment are so vivid and detail oriented that they come to life of the pages, the words turn into living breathing entities. I absolutely loved West and Sara. What amazing characters they are. Beautiful caring souls and big pure hearts. My heart broke for West. My goodness life was so unfair to him. What he lived and suffered through was excruciating. But through it all he never turned vindictive nor mean. Sara stole my heart, she’s truly priceless. She’s brave and courageous yet simple and down to earth. She’s funny and quirky, loyal and loving. Her and West are dynamic together. Everything is one hundred percent with them. Be it their quarrels, their banter or their passion. It’s always combustible and explosive. They are each others one and only. Along with the romance of Sara and West is another beautiful story of the majestic elephants and the magical forest that this outstanding author brings to life that left me in awe. My two most favorite parts were the cave scene and the scene in the forest with Sara and Khwezi. The cave moment was so beautiful and touching it left me breathless. And the forest scene had me in awe and wishing I was there experiencing that magical sight. This book was emotional and exciting. Spellbinding and I just could not put it down. I was absolutely enthralled and captivated by everything!
Love this series! Charmaine Pauls seems to never disappoint with her writing!! Scrapulimancist, the 7th book in the Forbidden Arts series has my attention from the beginning. It’s full of adventure, danger, suspense and steaminess with the main characters and the storyline is so well written. Highly recommend this page turner journey into the wilderness!
3.5 Stars I don't recall ever reading a story where Scapulimancists were included, in fact, I am confident this is my first! Which meant when I began reading my focus was on the scenes taking place. Scapulimancist is a story about truth, power, greed and the threat of damage that looms when the wrong people hold control. The African setting provided the platform for animal conservation, human rights and sustaining a living.
Sara's assignment is to both secure an agreement between the native people and a landowner as well as confirming the local elephant population. Her first encounter with the locals is unpleasant, to say the least. They are unwelcoming and their attitude to her was downright painful. She didn't help walking into a local eatery/bar in her work outfit and request a vegetarian meal.
I appreciated the dilemma she faced when trying to find out what she could order from their menu. The staff were just being annoying and rude when they said they had nothing for her. Left with asking what they served with their meat, she ended up ordering the sides, but the jerks charged her the same price! They were sending her a message with the meal in more ways than one.
Wayne comes to Sarah's rescue, and the chemistry between the two is hot. It quickly smoulders out when he discovers the reason Sarah is in town. Sarah's heart sinks when it turns out it is Wayne's land she needs to acquire but remains stoic in doing what she has been sent to do. What she doesn't know is that the acquisition is not going to be straight-forward or easy by any standards.
The plot is complicated with several layers all impacting on Wayne and Sarah's well-being. Wayne has served time in jail for a murder he has no recollection of, involving his then partner. He's not had it easy, with many people holding him responsible for the girl's death and on top of that the financial drain of his legal fees has cost him dearly as well. Working at the local lumber yard, for a greedy, underhanded business owner, he has to decide between earning an income or leaving for good.
He never got over losing his girlfriend and as such has not wanted to enter a relationship since. When he meets Sarah though, she stirs up emotions he had long since buried. With both of them fighting their attraction and the town against Sarah, their happiness seems impossible.
I loved Sarah's sassy ways, but her naivety sometimes lets her down. Especially on one particular evening on a girl's night out where she did something totally foolish. Luckily it was not life threatening, but she went down a notch in my appreciation of her with her immaturity.
Wayne had no easy way out and was shackled within what he could do. His choices were down to the lesser of two evils. When he could step up to do right, he didn't hesitate which only endeared him to me all the more. There was one time where he went a tad caveman, and I rolled my eyes because really, he had no cause to do so in my opinion. It was a moment of ill-timed clarity but luckily not too late for him!
The supernatural aspect of the story was interesting. I didn't feel lost at all this being my first book in the series. There were times when the story felt drawn out, and the drama continued throughout, unlike a lot of romances where the drama erupts in the final chapters. It threw me a tad, thinking 'Why is this happening now?', I still have a good percentage left to read. While I enjoyed the story, there were times when I believed I could have done with a break and read something else in between.
Sarah and her talents enabled me to experience a plot I hadn't encountered before. I appreciated the emotion behind the animal conservation efforts. The struggle with vegetarian food options is a universal challenge for people who chose a meat-free diet. Having family and friends who endure the ignorance of individuals who refuse to accept other's choices and beliefs, this added a realistic twist I related to. The action was full of suspense but occasionally became a tad OTT and drew the story out more than needed. There was a lot to love about Scapulimancist with the good times overshadowing the darker aspects to this story!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author
This is the seventh book in the Seven Forbidden Arts Series. I loved it!
Wayne West is a wonderful character. I liked him a lot, though I thought he was a jerk at first. However, as I got to know him better I began to see why he acted the way he did at times. He is an ex-con and has lost more than most. He is determined to hold on to the last remaining piece of land that he calls home. Unfortunately, his land has been marked by the government as a reserve for the last remaining elephants of the Knysna forest. He knows that its only a matter of time before someone from the South African National Parks (SANParks) arrives, but he is unprepared for the feelings that Sara stirs in him.
Sahara (Sara) Graham is also a wonderful character. I liked her too. She is determined to do her job of tracking the Knysna elephants to see how many are remaining in the forest and relocate them to the new reserve. She did not, however, expect to run into the farmer who's land the government had appropriated. As she gets to know Wayne, she finds herself torn between her feelings for him and her job. As danger threatens, can she trust him with her secret of being a Scapulimancist, someone able to communicate with animals?
Having previously read the other books of the series, I was eager to get my hands on this book. I was contacted by the author to see if I would like a complementary copy to read, which I accepted.
This story is told through the eyes of several characters, though it is shown mostly through Wayne and Sara's point of view. I started to read the story and was quickly hooked. I found myself on a huge emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish. I thought this book to be the best of the series so far. I enjoyed watching Wayne and Sara's relationship grow. The chemistry between them is hot enough to scorch the pages. However, I thought the first scene of when they met was rather harsh on Wayne's part. Granted, he is entitled to be bitter towards the SANParks for snatching his home from under him. However, it didn't endear him to me either. Having said that, he redeems himself in my eyes as the story unfolds and the reader gets to see the tortured man beneath his tough exterior.
The story introduces several interesting characters. Clive Theron is Wayne's boss and Thinus's father and Nelis's uncle. I took an instant dislike to all three of them. Then there is Bella, Wayne's only friend - I liked her a lot - and Dumile, the Nkosi (Chief) of the Xhosa tribe, who also happens to be Wayne's father-in-law. My favourite character though has to be young Khwezi, who made me smile. He's only five but definitely has an entrepreneurial edge to his character.
On more than one occasion I found myself holding my breath as the danger had me sitting on the edge of my seat. There is a lot going on, with some really intense scenes between the characters and, as I don't want to give any spoilers, I will not say much more. I will say that the paranormal task force is not as active in this story, though they do make an appearance close to the end of the book. I reached the end of the story with mixed feelings - sad that it was finished, but happy at the way it concluded. I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series as soon as I can.
Charmaine Pauls has written an entertaining standalone erotic romance. Her characters are lifelike and come alive on the page. I love her fast paced writing style and the flow is wonderful. I would definitely consider reading more of her books in the future.
Although this book can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend that you read this series in order. Due to the explicit nature of some of the scenes, as well as use of profane language, I do not recommend this book to readers under the age of 18. I do, however, recommend this book if you love science fiction, erotica, erotic romance or paranormal romance genres. – Lynn Worton
This is the seventh book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series which can be read as a stand-alone.
Out on her first field assignment, South Africa National Parks Board Ranger Sahara (Sara) Graham is determined to save endangered elephants and protect their natural forest but doing so won’t be easy. The government has a plan that she wants to implement in a way that will cause the least strife to those impacted but she’s inexperienced and too trusting of humanity for the situation she walks into alone, smugglers don’t take kindly to governmental interference and target her immediately. If not for the protective nature towards women of one woodcutter she wouldn’t have survived the first day. Her reluctant savior makes her feel things she’s never known and is also the man whose land is being reclaimed. Can she break through his tough exterior long enough to listen?
Getting involved will probably cause him grief later but Wayne West couldn’t leave the sassy sexy SANParks woman open to what the cousins had in store for her. Saving her had an unexpected side effect, it made him continually responsible for her welfare and actions as she keeps getting into trouble. Learning that she wants to take the only land he has left puts them at odds but he can’t make himself walk away from her for long. She’s everything he doesn’t deserve but can’t help but want. There is such deep emotional pain within Wayne, this is a man who needs redemption. He’s a convicted murderer out on parole for the death of his girlfriend on a night he doesn’t remember, will the truth absolve him or break him?
At first these two seem to have little in common but they both care about the land and the natives, the chemistry between them is undeniable and explosive from the moment they met, they fill a need within each other but their situation is complicated on so many fronts. That Sara is a virgin and unexperienced with relationships led to simple misunderstandings. Her steadfast belief in Wayne was hard for him to swallow considering the level of anguish and guilt he lives with yet for him Sara was the light in his darkness that steadily drew him in.
As a heroine Sara was naïve probably due to youth. Thinking she could take care of herself walking into such a harsh environment unprotected was unrealistic, as shown by the situation she needed rescuing from. But I have to say she grows on you as the story progresses and you have to like her determination and wicked sense of payback. Though she’s gifted with certain abilities she’s out of her element dealing with the darker side of the human species and it’s not just smugglers to deal with but those wanting her ability, a secret she kept from Wayne for too long. The scenes where she used her art in the forest were mesmerizing but her art does have a drawback, it’s too easily thwarted. Wayne, the anti-hero, was an intriguing contradiction, acting as the white knight yet denying he is one, he’s made mistakes and has many regrets yet he seems to always try to do what is right for deep inside there’s a caring heart.
This book, an enjoyable addition to the series, had an intense, emotional storyline filled with much suspense and there were some brutal scenes to contend with. There was lots going on that unraveled slowly, as the relationship between Wayne and Sara evolved so did the conspiracies around them until it all comes to a head at the ending where the good versus evil arts comes into play.
An advanced reading copy was obtained from the author.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 7 in the Seven Forbidden Arts series. This is also the most loosely connected to the other books, and I *think* that's what lets it down, just a tad. You don't HAVE to have read the other books, but they are all 4.5/5 star reads, so listen to me when I say, you SHOULD read them.
Sara is in the South African forests to see just how many elephants are left, and to tell Wayne he has to leave his land. But Wayne is having none of it, and plans to fight Sara. But someone wants Sara gone before she does her job, and Wayne finds himself all protective of Sara, in a way he never felt before. Will he keep her safe, or keep his long held land?
I love this series, you know I do, and Pauls is an amazing story teller, but it was just a matter of time before one slipped off that 5 star read peg, and this one happens to be it.
And for the life of me, I cannot pinpoint why, other than the fact that its only for a chapter or two the others appear. Godfrey flits in, and out. That man has more lives than a blooming cat! Everyone appears to help Wayne find Sara, and for Wayne to get some answers to the questions that have plagued him all these years. But that's all. And I can't decide if I'm pleased they only flit in and out, or not.
Sara and Wayne are perfect for each other, even if Wayne can't see it in the beginning. Sara's gift is not used as in depth as the others, she can control the animals in a short radius, and she only uses it for her own safety, often with comical if painful effects.
Don't you just hate not being able to word what you want to say, other than I'm sorry I didn't love it, like the rest??
4 stars
**same worded review will appear on Goodreads, Booklikes, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, and Barnes and Noble**
Scapulimancist is the seventh book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series, and is amazing in its own right. Sahara (usually known as Sara) has the ability to control/manipulate animals. She doesn't use this ability for fun, knowing the consequences of being found, but rather for her own safety and to help her do her job. Wayne is a convicted murderer who has no memory of actually committing the crime. He has served his time, and now scrapes a living from the man who bought out his farm and land, who Wayne is also convinced is crooked but has no proof as yet.
Surprisingly enough, the majority of the book passes by without a mention of the others, and I thoroughly enjoyed this. Sara and Wayne, with their story and the supporting cast that they have, needed no "hold ups". Sara is sassy and feisty, Wayne refuses to allow her in (yeah right, like THAT'S going to happen!) and so their story takes off. The scenery is painted vividly, and the stately grace of the encounters with the elephants is described so perfectly, it caught my breath.
As with all of Charmaine Pauls' books, this is extremely well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow. It is an excellent addition to the series, whilst standing capably on its own feet. I would recommend reading the whole series though, simply because you would be missing out on some fantastic stories if you didn't. Highly recommended by me.
