New York Deep

Rate this book
Deep below Manhattan, tunnel engineer Josh Reed leads his team as they excavate the East Side Access extending New York's railway service. But sparks fly as the drill hits an unusual crystalline material—one Josh has never seen before. They push on and Josh discovers something even more unexpected . . . a vast room, empty and lifeless.

Or so it seems.

When Josh finds out that the CIA are now looking for him, and that his co-workers have gone missing, he turns to his best friend and boss Lionel Parker for help. Together they unravel the mystery of the room, what's inside it, and why the CIA are so desperate to keep them silent.

It's nothing they could ever have expected.

Passable premise falls flat

Decent concept falls victim to choppy narrative structure, typical tropes, and rushed characterization. Shows signs of potential, but ultimately fails to deliver.

Yikes. This book had a fairly interesting premise, but the execution was exceedingly mediocre. I was also annoyed by the forced melodrama- the conflict between the protagonist and his family life seemed rushed, and the ending give the reader ZERO satisfaction, especially after all the wailing one has to endure about how much the protagonist misses his wife after he essentially forces him to divorce her. Ah well, it was good for a light hearted read...and for the laughs at the totally one-dimensional villain's stereotypical evil threats.

Mind bender

I didn't know quite what to expect when I purchased this book. I was getting burned out by continually going to authors I was familiar with, I started seeing the patterns, the plot design, and they became predictable. So, I took a stab, a chance on an unfamiliar author, and hit pay dirt. It's not a long book, and being a speed reader I figured it would be a brief distraction. Boy, was I wrong. The speed brakes came on, and I slowed down to enjoy the the tiniest details. I'll not give any of the plot devices up, but, be prepared for an unusual experience. Finished this one, and I am fixing to download another one. Here's hoping it's half as much fun!

I didn't hate this book, but as soon as I find myself skipping chapters and even whole pages I know it won't be more than a 2 star book. The premise is good, but the characters feel very flat, and I could not engage with the main character at all. As others have mentioned the villain is a carbon copy of many others. The only menace the author can create is to say "his smile didn't quite meet his eyes". Ooo I'm trembling. The time travel fell flat for me and the "creatures" didn't ring true either. I've read a lot of sci-fi and thrillers and this just didn't do it for me. Given two stars because I did actually finish it.

I started out with high hopes for this book since the premise was interesting. But I was soon irritated by inconsistent characters, plot holes, incompetent and fanatical government agents, etc. At only 157 pages in I was regularly bored - I had to force myself to finish this and in the end, it just wasn't worth it.

More & better than I expected

Looked interesting, easy read. Time portals, moral dilemmas, enigmas wrapped in mysteries, character developments, not sure how it could be done but would gladly read sequels or a series. Zzx

Don't want to give away anything ...

It takes me a while to download books, I'm super picky. If I don't like the book's description, or if former readers give it many bad ratings, I ignore the book and keep searching. I almost did that with this book. Not due to ratings but to the predictability I assumed. Ha! Know the saying? Assume makes an Ass out of U and Me? It made me nearly miss a good read!

This one has some good feels for the reader. A young man, caught in his own life errors of family vs. work, and his earth-shattering discovery far beneath the ground, and his growing comprehension of just exactly what he'd found all led to a conclusion that literally touched my heart. The author wowed me! The ending brought bittersweet tears to my eyes.

KUDOS!! RECOMMENDED!!

I am not a big science fiction fan and reading this book confirmed this for me. I am always intrigued at the beginning of the mystery but get disenchanted when the book turns to time travel and aliens as this one did. In this book, men digging a tunnel find a mysterious room. The central focus is figuring out what the room is. Not for me but others might like it.

Josh in time

Josh had found the room in the deep tunnel. It was a portal to the future. Josh had to close it before it was too late. Edwards would stop him or die trying.

I really didn't love how this book was written. Lots of repetition in descriptions. It seemed super juvenile. I have lost a few hours of my life to this stupid book.

I really enjoyed this book. I was well-written and exciting. A page-turner. I did not mind that it is a relatively short book because it is concise. Sometimes I think authors try to stretch the length of their books and thereby add tedious, boring sections that add nothing to the plot. Not so with this book.

I did not give the book five stars because I have one minor issue for the author. Details and research. It makes me wince and detracts from the enjoyment of reading when I lose the ability to suspend disbelief. For example, cockpit doors are NEVER left open in flight. Not after September 11, 2001 anyway. Also, you cannot buy airline tickets so quickly for three adults and one child. They need names and identification. Again, security is much tighter than that.

Otherwise, I know nothing about civil engineering, so I'll bet those parts are spot-on! Good job, Mr. Morgan.

Perhaps the worst book I've ever read. While reading it I had trouble deciding whether it was simply horribly written, or whether it was intentionally horrible as some kind of farce.

The protagonist has the personality of David Putty from Seinfeld.

Dialogue often goes something like this:

"Hey" he said.

"Hi" she replied.

"You ok?" He asked.

"Sure" she replied.

Etc.

A flight from NYC to Houston magically takes five hours. A guy with $7 goes into a convenience store and buys a set of new clothes.

Compared to these small details, the big mystery is totally believable.

If you literally have no other options in reading materials, including food nutrition labels or a newspaper in a language you don't understand, feel free to pick this one up.

Ugh.

A great read

I was not sure that I would like this but gave the synopsis a read. Really enjoyed the premise and rad straight through. Without giving the ending away, was pleased with the humanity shown, and the friendship. Buy it, you won't regret it

Nice premise, story failed

The premise is new and it worked for me. I liked a lot of the writing but there were some issues that were jarring.

The writer worked a little too hard at including the black best friend and a Latino employee. There was some strained dialogue especially in the beginning of the story, to demonstrate the best friend status. Removing some of the scenes would have made a better story.

The attempt at inclusiveness was heavy handed and made other scenes ring false to me. There is a scene wherein the black best friend of the main character has to explain why he has $1000 in cash to help out his best friend. In another scene the black best friend has to defend himself against the main character's questioning whether the black best friend has a criminal background, again while helping the main character. Friends don't view their best friend that way. A Latino employee lives in a barrio apartment building with a broken front door. Emphasizing what are racist expectations in the context of a friendship, normalizes them and I hope that wasn't the writer's conscious intent.

Kudos for attempting inclusivity but in some situations what is, is what it is. "Cheers" would have been ridiculous had any non-white major character been retrofitted into the cast. The casting acknowledged Boston's legendary segregation (not condoning it) and went on to tell interesting stories. "Modern Family" addresses the same reality and has gone on to tell a lot of good stories.

At one point, the main character has stolen a gun from a policeman and is threatening two policemen and no shots were fired. Based on previous scenes, it reminds readers that if the main character's best friend were involved the scene has to be written differently.

Imagine a black man or woman pointing a gun at a policeman and not being shot down immediately. Recent high profile cases involved a 12 year old boy killed while playing with a toy gun on a playground, a Vietnamese student with a ball point pen in his hand was killed in Seattle because a white passerby was afraid, a motorist caught on dashcam trying to comply with a state trooper's contradictory commands being shot (he survived the half dozen shots), a black customer shot to death for carrying a toy rifle that he was purchasing in a Wal-Mart, these and more all occurred in broad daylight and in public spaces with no explanation that would satisfy a jury had the victim been white.

Hopefully, the writer will give his characters more real world circumstances in his stories. I gave this two stars for effort. A potentially good story, could have used better character development, interesting writing but has mixed messages about some characters that really negatively impacted the rest of the narrative. I may consider trying another of his books.

New York Deep

I really enjoyed this book. I am a fan of time travel and this approach was very different from others. Kind of like the movie Groundhog Day with a twist.
The characters were awesome and there was so much to them packed into this book. It wouldn’t be a good book if it didn’t have some heartache at the end but there was also hope. It would be very interesting to have the author write the same book but with more story into the lives of all the characters including the visitors. I have questions!
Lol.

The free one was ☝️ you wanted think To good

"That was the big one," Edwards whispered solemnly. "There's no way these rooms could have been a natural occurrence, or even built by an extinct civilization. The materials, the energy—they must have been created by something else." Josh swallowed, his stomach dropping. "But what…?"

A great read.

Well written and with a good plot. The characters are well designed and you can really feel what they are going through. Would make a great movie in my opinion. Really looking forward to more of the authors work.

Highly recommended

Very deep indeed.

I had no idea what kind of story that this book was heading for. I was pleasantly surprised that it ran as deep as the title suggests. Without giving too much away it proved to be more than the "spooky, ooh it's dark, what was that?" kind of pulp that, frankly, I'd convinced myself I would be reading. You will not be disappointed if, like me, you read the synopsis expecting one thing, then finding yourself in a whole new dimension!

Fascinating tale!

Innovative story, with a unique plot, well defined characters that made you care enough about them that ypu couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen to them. Really well written, Mr. Andrew Morgan has a new fan in me!

Enjoyable story

This is a story for all ages and time,it is refreshing that the author didn't have to use profanity or sex to write a story that will be appreciated by all who love a good adventure.

This is a nice compact, sci-fi adventure. It's quite short in length, so there isn't a lot of time for set-up, reflection, or explanation. The action starts right away and keeps going to the end, with little pause or side-story. The main sci-fi story-line, though not well explained, is interesting. It seems like there should have been more reveal at the end, though. The ending seemed a bit rushed and cut-off.
There were some errors in the text, and several plot holes and logic gaps. It was obvious to me (and other readers) that the author is an Englishman writing an American story. There were a few glaring uses of British terminology. Some of the dialogue was pretty lame. The protagonist's attempts to escape from and/or stay clear of the CIA (catch all for US Government) were almost laughable for a 21st Century story. As if US Gov Intelligence can't monitor cell phones, ATM transactions and Airline/Bus ticket purchases!
Overall, I find this to be an enjoyable sci-fi story if you ride along and don't take it too seriously.

Had and Lost Me All In One

I don’t always check other reviews before posting my own (I don’t want to steal their ideas or influence in any way). But for New York Deep I had to look. I noticed one thing. People either loved or hated this book. There didn’t seem to be a lot of “in the middle” people. Me, I enjoyed it more than I didn’t.

I agree with other reviews that the character development was rushed and there wasn’t a big reason to like let along follow Josh along this crazy and insane journey.

I don’t like to spoil things in my review (so look away if that’ll bother you) but I have to spoil it a little to even start my review. First and foremost – this is a time travel book. It doesn’t look or feel that way when you first start it, but the blurred timelines and insane back and forth from different times makes this firmly a time travel book.

I like when a book can confuse me and leave me feeling hopeless. That means I’m connecting with the main character in some way, but New York Deep seemed to go into the deep end and then sink there. I couldn’t follow it from about 2/3 to 3/4 of it. It did swing back a little in the last 15% or so, but man was I at a complete loss.

That’s why this book is so hard for me to rate. I liked it because it made me think. I liked it because it jumped around time and I wasn’t even sure why. But I didn’t like it because I wasn’t given a real reason to like Josh. I didn’t because I wasn’t given a real reason to like the story at all, it just felt rushed and confusing. But most of all, I don’t like that I don’t know how to feel about it.

I’m trying to be more critical this year, but this book has thrown me for such a loop.

Overall, I thought that New York Deep was an interesting story that got lost along the way. I like Morgan’s work but this one felt like it was fighting multiple battles to get the story to me.

The narration for New York Deep was done by Greg Tremblay. I don’t think I’ve listened to any books by him before this but I’ve been following him for a while. He was good and a few times I think he slipped deeper into a New York/Brooklyn accent (even though he didn’t use it the whole time). I thought his narration helped add to the story.

This was actually a bit different to what I thought it was going to be, however it was a really fascinating and gripping read that leaves you flipping pages to find out what is going to happen next.
Whilst it is definitely a Sci-Fi story, it has a real ‘Thriller’ element to it as well.
Josh Reed is a tunnel engineer working deep underground in New York, when the machinery he and his team are using hits something that they can’t identify. When Josh goes to investigate, he finds something that he can’t explain, and they evacuate. From there, Josh soon finds himself on a terrifying ride, as the CIA are suddenly after him and the crew, and they are willing to do anything to get him.
What Josh has discovered is beyond anything he could have expected and is totally Earth Shattering, and will possibly change the course of history, but at the moment, all Josh cares about is that it is threatening the lives of his family, his Wife and young son, and those of his friends.
He finds himself on the run and can’t really understand why, but knows he has to act or it could mean an end to everything.
This was a totally fascinating book, completely engaging, and once you are into the story, it is utterly compelling as you are thrust into Josh’s life as he frantically tries to decipher what is going on, and at the same time, tries to protect those closest to him. You find yourself wondering what you would do in similar circumstances.
I will admit that there was a few sections that I thought moved a little slow, but this was a part of the story, so I did overlook it.
Overall, this was an impressive story, very well written with a lot of twists that were well hidden. Some of the characters are a little stereotypical, but that does not take away from the quality of the story, or the exhilaration and thrills as it unfolds.
This is definitely worth the read, and I will be looking at Morgan’s other books as a result of reading this.

I really enjoyed this book. I'd describe it as action / sci-fi, with some heartfelt moments that really gets you rooting for the main character to succeed. Josh, the main character, is well rounded. Intelligent and driven but also necessarily flawed.

It's a little hard to review exactly what the book is about without giving away what this mysterious find is all about. It's a little spoiler-ish, but you find out fairly early on what it's all about so if you REALLY don't want to know, don't read on. Although thinking about it, the Amazon categories kind of give it away too, so what the hell...

Our hero, Josh, is drilling a new tunnel in New York to extend the rail lines. His team hits a weird, crystalline / metal hybrid, but manage to push on through. Quickly thereafter his world begins to unravel, with the CIA showing up taking a very close interest in the find.

When his work friends begin to disappear and his ex-wife and son are threatened, Josh contacts his boss, Lionel, who helps get him and his family out of town. But just when they think they're safe, the plot turns on its head and suddenly he's back in time before any of this began.

The time travel part of this novel is interesting and free from the normal problems you get with causality and changing the future from the past. I won't delve into the details why as that gives away a little too much of the plot.

The pace picks up and races by as the action heats up at the end, with interesting twists and turns as more is revealed.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read from beginning to end and makes me want to find out what else this author has written.

New York Deep

A different kind of novel. One with a one-of-a-kind plot that surprises the reader several times over. I loved the main character, who, in spite of himself, becomes a hero. Full of startling predicaments, and nasty government "agents", it's we'll worth one's time.
