New Reign #1

Till Dawn Do Us Part

Rate this book
Three hundred years has passed since the Last War. That's how the Elites called the third worldwide conflict, swearing that their rule would ensure that humanity would stay at peace forever.
They lied.

After the war, two third of women were born barren, so the fertile ones have a duty to society they must fulfill by either giving birth to a child by their twenty-fifth year, or go through the Auctions.

Xander spends most of his time in his lab, but once a year, he has no choice: every unattached, childless male in the City is bidden to attend the Auctions, even the very first genetically engineered soldier they now call Elite.
He never had any intentions to bid on a woman; children weren’t on his radar, and if they had been, he wouldn’t have needed the ridiculous farce his party intended to abolish as soon as they were elected.
Then, he sees her. Ruby Ruth Sterling.
The woman for whom he would destroy the world.

Till Dawn Do Us Part
(New Reign #1)
by May Sage
Well, the opening did not appeal to me at all. Women had to sell their bodies and after 3 babies which they give to their baby daddies. They have performed their service to mankind. WTF? So, this was too weird. The men control all actions too. The gal of the story is bought by an immortal. A super Alpha. He is "patient" with her and lets her work and do as she pleases for a month. He even helps out at the charity she goes to.
It's too short to get a full feeling from the story but what I got I didn't care for.

There really wasn't enough of this. I'll admit I didn't care for the opening, not because it isn't well written, but because I'm female the idea of women being forced to sell their bodies appauls me. The manner in which it occurs, an open public spectacle is even more abhorrent.

That said the world is fascinating, a bleak look ahead at our own futures should we continue to empower leaders who lust for power instead of being called by a genuine desire to serve and protect. The chain of events leading to this story are extremely logical and realistic. Uncompromising and power hungry leaders could lead to a third World War, it's not farfetched to assume that in the event of a third World War nuclear weapons might be used and that those weapons might cause radiation poisoning in the remaining people they didn't kill. It seems likely that many of the survivors exposed to that sort of war might be barren and that the population would be severely diminished in its aftermath. It's also not unreasonable to assume that should the human race fear extinction, the essential rights women have worked so hard to gain would be stripped from them in order to preserve the species. It also seems logical, considering the battle to gain them in the first place, a patriarchal society wouldn't be quick to return those rights once the threat of extinction was no longer eminent. All of the build makes senses and could easily become our future and for that I absolutely adored the premise of this novel.

That said, despite its science fiction subcategory this book is at its heart a romance that didn't allow enough interactions between the male and female leads to create a believable love story. I'd have actually given this book a higher rating if the author had skipped the romance all together and focused instead on the dystopian society and it's faults. I will say that while the story includes a mild sex scene that author did not resort to marathon sex to sell the idea of love and I really respect that.

Ultimately what the book needed was more to it, more time to really understand the world as it is in their time, more time to truly know the characters and more scenes in which they interact in order to show the transition from fear, mistrust and attraction to respect, care and love.

It's a decent story and I look forward to the next installment, I just wish the author had given it a little more.

I highly recommend this book for two reasons but I only gave it four stars because it was set up as a multi-book series and there's only one book. I need the other one. The main characters Xander and Ruth are really great together and like many of her characters Ruth is a strong female. Which is great because Xander is the strongest male in that world.

The other thing about this book is that it has a four chapter preview of a book called Beyond Time. Which does not exist yet! And oh my god do I wish it did. What a taste. May, please write it! Till Dawn do us part I would classify a science fiction. May Sage does only a little science fiction. Mostly she does contemporary, paranormal, and fantasy and excels in them all. But her science fiction is excellent. I've read The Emperor's Mate which is actually three novellas in one book, Till Dawn To Us Part, and now this frustrating taste of Beyond Time.

In Earth of the future, after war and radiation have ripped apart the world, the ruling parties were all executed in a blood bath, and replaced by the Alphas who are not only super soldiers, but are also immortal in a bid to save the world. And with the population on the brink because of infertility because of the radiation, the Drafts were introduced, where fertile women, age 25 and older, who weren’t married, had to be put on the market for any bidder to purchase them for sex with for once a week for a year. Ruth has come of age, and finds herself on the market, and with one smile, Alpha Xander takes an interest and purchases her for a First Contract, an indefinite contract that is only fulfilled when she has his baby. But Ruth’s fiery personality keeps Xander at bay and makes him re-think his outlook on the regular, non-Alpha people, and the rights that women have lost.

I was totally loving this short story, and I was going to easily give it 5 stars, until I reached the end. It wasn’t the cliffhanger (which actually there isn’t really one). The problem with the end is that it was sort of a null ending and just cut off in the middle of building an idea for the next book. I am eager to continue this series. I would love to see what might happen in the revolution, and what might happen next for Ruth and Xander, but considering I bought this book two years ago and there are no further installments, I don’t know if I should put much hope on the author actually writing further books for this story. This book borrows ideas from The Handmaid’s Tale with making fertile women slaves to have sex with. But in this, they have a lot more freedom than in Handmaid’s Tale. Here, they still have to work at a regular job (which wasn’t really addressed in the book. There was one point where it said she worked at a lab, and I thought Xander might take an interest in that, but he never did and it never popped up in the book again), and they can still live where they want to, without really being chained to whoever buys them except for the requirement of still having sex with them. I did like the arguments between the leads, where Xander who thinks of himself as being liberal, and open to different ideas, really wasn’t, and had to re-adjust his world view and really take a good look at people outside of his social class. Ruth herself, was fighting against the structured society, too, with her parents and her living how they wanted to. And, as usual, I do love the slow budding romance, though Xander did fly off the handle with Alpha possessiveness every so often (not an endearing trait, though I did have a good laugh over him itching to put Lucian’s eye out for winking at Ruth). I also loved that there were immortals in this, without having them be traditional vampires. Ruth is a strong, opinionated, fiery viewpoint to follow and I like that it switches to Xander’s viewpoint, too, explaining the origins of their society, and following the politics and what life is like at the top. There were also a ton of typos in this. I was finding at least several per page, most of them were plurals missing the s at the end, and some obviously wrong words like reasoning instead of resonating. It really needs someone to go through and clean up the errors. And, BTW, the current cover really doesn’t match the book. It looks like a guy posing with a light saber. I never saw any swords whipped out (or at all, for that matter) and I certainly didn’t see any fencing battles in this.

Not a bad read, has high potential but the story was just wayyyyy too short. I finished the book + epilogue in 4 hrs ... soooo... you can guess how short this book is.

I would have given the plot a 5 star, but there just wasn't enough juicy drama going on.
Super spoiler ->

The cover is misleading. There's a sword so naturally you would think there'd be some kind of action, life & death scenes. Nope, there was none.

Okay, gorgeous cover, like that was the reason I read the book.

Unfortunately, the book was sooo rushed, everything was going so fast and it didn't make sense. I can handle a few things not being told but omg, this one was tedious. Also, there was so much potential missed, the world, the dynamics, everything was wasted.

Don't recommend it.

As usual I love the writing style of May Sage.

The story was alluring, maybe a bit short and more a prologue to the New Reign series than a first book. The characters are well constructed: they all have a personality fitting with their own story and situation.

What grabbed my attention in this book is mainly the idea of a world, centuries later, where a "new reign" has come, involving enhanced humans and survivor of one last war. The rules are very different and yet similar from our owns: disturbing. As the main character said it is not perfect but is understandable how these rules and laws were set. The good question now is: what would be the evolution of this system?

Ruby - Ruth - discover that textbook does not always tell it all and that change can come from even someone as "insignificant" as her. If only she could understand the Alpha who has his eyes fixed on her.

This is a very short read from new Universe created by May Sage.

As usual author gave us a heroine that knows her way, is strony but still feminine. Ruby (or rather Ruth as she prefers) is a girl that has everything almost and she would be able to step away from Draft tradition. What ismher reason to participate in it? Get into her mind to Discover it. You wont be disappointed with her.
Xander/Alexander is a personifiacation of masculine being that can make you droll. I really enjoyed his relation with Ruth as IT wasnt like anyone was completely dominator in it.

I just would love to have more of them!

Good story.

I liked this book. I was unsure at first with the sexism that initially seemed present, but the story definitely developed in a more positive way. I'm curious to see what happens next. All and all the book was interesting with a good group of characters.

What would you do, if you find yourself bought by a powerful being? Well,Ruth decides to continue her life just as before. and Xander is having none of it. As Sci-Fi stories go, this is vary light read' but a fun one, nonetheless.

Interesting concept and I look forward to reading the next chapter. Short read (even for a slow reader like me) but i enjoyed the character and world build up that gets the story started ready for the next installment.

3.15.2023 I don't know what happen to my original review but I do remember liking this story. It was a bit insta lovey but I was okay with that. Sad part is that it's unfinished and I'm not sure if the author is going to do another book in the series.

Needs editing.

Way too many grammar and spelling mistakes. They take me out of the story. Add in the occasional wrong word, ugh. Ok story, wish it were longer.

To short

If you meant to confuse that worked. I will try the next one. Way to short of a book but good.

Weak

This read like a novella or very short story and even then it was disjointed and very unsatisfactory. Editing was poor with misspelled words and bad grammar.

Where is the story? I am so lost. I can't believe I paid to basically read a paragraph here and there.

This was a quick little read. The story was interesting, and while some of it was a little hard to read (I mean, they ARE buying and selling women for babies, here) the world building was pretty fantastic. And the twist at the end was great, and ALMOST made me forgive Xander for some of his douchebaggery early on. I'll definitely be picking up book 2.

I'd been very excited to get Till Dawn do Us Part. Great cover-check. Intriguing blurb-check. Low, pre-release pricing- check.

Unfortunately, this 5-star worthy plot with awesome characters was riddled with grammatical and spelling errors. The book was poorly edited (if at all), and was definitely not proofed. To name ONLY a few edit mishaps: grown=groan, wran=ran, reasoning=resonating, bac=back, wave=weave. There were also multiple issues with present-past tense use, such as was instead of were. Sage even managed to mess up plural usage-not once, but many times.

Having read this author before, I was surprised and disappointed. I think readers are a victim of a rushed release. Oh, and for readers who buy for the cover-- yeah, they're out there-- the cover is great, but has nothing to do with the story.

Shame on you May Sage, for skipping quality by skipping a professional editor. You had a 5-star opportunity with the story line and marvelous protagonists, and you blew it.

This novella is a series starter, so it was all over the place in setting up for the background. This story does catch my interest and I definitely want to read the series as they come out because it's looking interesting/good.... the author describes this as an extended prelude ending with a cliffhanger and that's a perfect description. I give this a 3.5 star rating.

Another fun read from May Sage.

Another fun rad from May Sage. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I am very interested in the future of the world and the characters presented here. Also, the teaser looks like it will be an interesting story as well.

*I voluntarily read this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*

3.5-4 stars

I enjoyed this book but found it a little overwhelming in the beginning. Perhaps a prologue about what the draft is and the implications of receiving contracts etc might have eased me in better.

The story was intriguing with lots of originality. The beginning was slow paced but it does pick up. When Xander makes an appearance, he definitely shakes things up. I liked the direction the story was heading and eagerly look forward to the next instalment.
