When Elizabeth Prentiss discovers the body of her recently retired father, Bill McCulloch, in his home the doctor declares it to be a death by natural causes and refuses to recommend an autopsy. Elizabeth, however, is convinced his death is suspicious and she hires Kane and Lucy to arrange a private autopsy. But the autopsy will take several weeks to complete and she is anxious for the circumstances surrounding her father’s death to be investigated without delay. With little to go on, Kane and Lucy find they must dig into the past of the former police detective’s life. The only item that may hold clues to his death is Bill’s cell phone, and the investigation will face many twists, turns and dead-ends before they finally uncover the shocking truth.
John Hemmings is an experienced criminal attorney and writer of crime fiction with a one hundred percent record as a criminal trial lawyer - not one of his clients has ever been executed...yet!
He graduated in English literature and spent five years as a post-graduate lecturer before turning to a life of crime - on the right side of the fence of course. Each of his books features Boston private investigator Mark Kane and his long-time companion Lucy.
Many of the stories are inspired by actual events and people the author has met and worked with during his career, but names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent - and sometimes the guilty.
On his website: www.johnhemmings.net you can read the first 5 chapters of each of his books in the Mark Kane Mysteries series (and even read the first 4 chapters of the next book in the series: 'Missing'. which is due to be published in approximately 6 weeks).
Good read,Kane and Lucy are a great pair! The plot is well developed and surprise ending a
Great and satisfying series of events. Finished in a day ! I wanted to know what was was ahead for the 2 of them. Their theories led them to several different Outcomes. The way it all worked out was a satisfying ending......
Over the last five years and eight books, John Hemmings has become one of my favorite male authors. It is so refreshing to read mystery novels that don't have to be rated "R" for language, sex, or violence.
The books are well-written; however, the editing could be improved. There are too many punctuation marks (mostly commas) that are either missing or misplaced.
I did not find that this book lived up to the ratings it has received. First, I found the plot to be on the simplestic side. It also did not really finish the story. We don't know if Kane and Lucy's findings ever made it to court so I was left wondering what would have happened if it had.
Second, the author is apparently from Great Britain, although he does not disclose this and I cannot find this information out on the Internet. He uses idioms that are not from the United States but are commenly used in England. Some are explained in the book and others are left for you to either ignore or research on your own. Also, he makes reference to a car driven by the client as a Ford Mondeo. This car is not sold in the US, but is in other countries, most notably in Great Britain.
Not enough research went into this book which left me distracted from the plot while I had to go to Google to understand what was being said. I will not be reading any more Kane and Lucy mysteries unless they are free and I am not sure even then. I like a mystery that has me wanting to get to the end, but once I get there, I wish for more and finding myself thinking about the plot and characters for days afterwards. Neither of which I found in this book.
This is book eight in the Kane & Lucy mysteries. This has been a great series. This book just came out . It is as good as all the other books in the series. Worth reading .I recommend this series.
As always this Kane & Lucy mystery kept me riveted to the page. Characters are solid and extremely likeable. So glad Elizabeth showed up with her big surprise!
Kane & Lucy are asked to investigate an apparent death by natural causes of an ex-policeman. His daughter is not satisfied and thinks something is fishy. I rate this a 4.9
I love this series; great characters, interesting mysteries, and no offensive language or explicit sex or violence. Just a well written mystery that keeps you interested and guessing till the last page. Five stars!
Mark and Lucy solve another one. Hemmings writes stories reminicent of the old Zane Grey era. This book had more typos than the last one I read though. I do like the fact all his books are standalone books and can be read in any order. Although it occasionally mentions a previous case, it doesn't ruin the story.
