Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are the latest recruits to the Green Lantern Corps. They’ve proven themselves capable of overcoming great fear alongside the Corps and the Justice League alike. Now Hal Jordan himself has assigned them the task of protecting the planet. But they’re still new to the job, with very little experience and a whole lot to prove.

That makes them the perfect targets.

One of the Green Lanterns’ greatest enemies has returned, and he has the Earth in his sights. He is Atrocitus, the tyrannical leader of the Red Lanterns, and he means to infect the entire planet with his murderous red rage.

Can Jessica and Simon overcome their differences and wield the Green Lantern’s light like true partners? Or will these rookies’ rage help the Red Lanterns extinguish that light for good?

I wanted to like Simon and Jessica, but the honest truth is that that these two (when paired up) just annoyed the shit out of me.

description

He's angry and she's scared. All. The. Time.
And yeah. The point of this volume is that they each overcome some of their demons and learn to rely on each other as partners. So...yay! Mission accomplished.

description

On the upside? Gorgous art & vibrant colors. If you happen to like the storyline and characters, then the visuals are just going to be icing on the cake!

description

Bottom line?
I thought Jessica was a cool character when I read about her originally, but this time around she didn't impress me at all. Plus, I found the entire storyline dull for some reason. I'd read a few pages and then put it down, so it took me over a week to finish this one volume - which is just waaay too long for a comic book.
There was nothing particularly bad about this thing, but it wasn't my personal cuppa and the thought of going back for more of this just doesn't do it for me.

“RAAAARRRGH! My name is Atrocitus and I’m a monster with a red ring. I leads the Red Lanterns!”
“Ugh, why’re you spitting blood everywhere??”
“Excuse me but I’m VOMITING blood everywhere and it’s because I’m a Red Lantern – it’s what we do! I want to put a Rage Seed in Earth.”
“You wanna knock up the planet? That sounds stupid.”
“It is. And a penis-like Hell Tower will burrow down into the Earth’s egg, uh, core where the Seed will be placed.”
“Why!?”
“Prophecy.”
“What?”
“There’s a prophecy, dude.”
“I’ve read the New 52 Red Lanterns books and there’s never been talk of some bullshit prophecy.”
“It’s called Red Dawn.”
“That’s even stupider. You know that’s the title of a couple of crap movies, right?”
“Woah, really? Are they about being angry and wanting to impregnate a planet?”
“No, that would be immensely retarded. They do suck though.”
“I’m still going to watch them.”
“Moron. Wait, why Earth exactly?”
“It’s the angriest planet in the universe.”
“And how did you find that out?”
“…”
“Tell me this isn’t the whole book.”
“Hello, I’m Simon Baz!”
“And I’m Jessica Cruz!”
“And together we are the new Green Lanterns!”
“We don’t get along at first but eventually become friends. This is a buddy cop movie, like a superhero version of Lethal Weapon but not as good!”
“Huh. Well, I guess you two do have decent chemistry and aren’t totally annoying. But why do so many Green Lanterns come from Earth?”
“…”
“And I’m a secret Guardian who made a secret super ring – I need to speak to Hal Jordan!”
“Go away, secret Guardian, you’re meant for later books!”
“Ok, I’ll go wait in the wings and order a beer.”
“Hi, I’m Atrocitus and I’ve got some nonsense to spew.”
“I’ll leave you all to it, I don’t need to hear it again.”
“Are you coming back to see what happens in the next book?”
“Yeah, you guys look great!”
“Did he have his fingers in his ears?”
“He was running too. I don’t think he’s gonna come back. Did you just spit blood on my spiffy green outfit??”
“Vomited blood, yes.”
“Why?!”
“I’ve been reading DC Rebirth books. I mean, I’m a Red Lantern, it’s what I do.”
“Do you need medical treatment?”
“Got any Tums?”
“No, but I can construct a green one.”
“Awesome. Ooo, it tastes minty too! So let’s get down to it. There’s this Prophecy called Red Dawn…”
(Both Green Lanterns vomit.)

"I am Simon Baz . . . we've just been to Hell and back, I think possibly literally . . . we're the planet's best hope against these guys." -- Simon Baz, rookie Green Lantern for section 2814

"I am Jessica Cruz . . . I know what you're thinking - we look like glamorous superheroes right now . . . and right now, Earth is in big trouble . . . we're the planet's best hope against these guys." -- Jessica Cruz, rookie Green Lantern for section 2814

Tearing a page or many more from the tried-and-true The Odd Couple / Lethal Weapon mismatched character partnership along with a large dose of the standard "they're our only hope!" comic book plot and you have DC's newest Earth-assigned Green Lanterns for the 21st century. Baz and Cruz can bicker something fierce (that part did get old really fast) but have to learn the importance of working together in their capacity - veteran GL Hal Jordan having them share a particularly important piece of equipment was a nicely inspired little moment to induce the needed camaraderie - as the demonic fiend Atrocitus (and obviously his parents knew he would grow up to be a villain by adorning him with such a wicked-sounding moniker) is spawning the pandemic of 'Red Dawn' - turning thousands of random citizens, even including those in the Justice League, into rage-filled zombified monsters - all over the globe. It was admittedly sort of a thin premise and a so-so execution of it over the six chapters, but I'd still like to see how this super-powered patrol cop duo will fare from here out.

The 2 newest rookie GL's must partner up to protect Earth. The Red Lanterns are trying to fulfill a prophecy called Red Dawn. The story isn't all that great. People across the Earth are being infected with some kind of rage virus. What is good is the characterization and interactions between Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. It's really what makes the book. Simon Basically thinks he can do anything through sheer willpower and he pretty much can. Jessica used to be Power Ring and was controlled by her ring until she finally overcame it. She's plagued by self-doubt and hasn't been able to form a construct because of it.

Received an advance copy from NetGalley and DC in exchange for an honest review.

This one was quite good!

Sam and Jess have to work together after Hal deems it so and well we have this two new rookie lanterns working together but they hate each other and we see their struggles and whatnot and them learning to be heroes but when attacked by Atrocitus and his red lanterns and people being angry the world over, these two have to set aside their differences and work together and I love the way it happens and with Jess wanting to save her sister and trying to learn to make constructs and the struggles of it.. its kinda fun and makes for some fun storytelling and the conflicts and resolutions and the eventual payoff and maybe some setting up of future storyline also happens!

Great writing and I love Sam's writing style like he takes familiar tropes but makes them so fresh and its the perfect book for a beginner and also I am loving the mention of Hal again and again here and their friendship which just blossoms in the end ugh I love it. The art is a treat and each page is filled with emerald goodness and some great hints as to what to come with Red dawn and the phantom lantern! A must recommend!

This is officially my first Green Lantern book I've read (unless count Omegemen. Which has a Lateran in it...and it's very good. Go read it.)

Green Lanterns is the story of two characters, very different, who have to work together to take down the RED. The red are basically filled with rage and want to make everyone in the world fill up with...you guessed it...RAGEEEEEEE!

Jessica has been a Lantern before, and it seemed she fucked up (again haven't read any other title...this is probably not the best idea) and she must team up with none other than Simon...who is basically a man with a "dark" past that makes him bullheaded. Two very different characters now have to stop the world from turning into insane evil rage monsters.

It's not bad actually. The goods are the art, which I enjoyed. I also love the dialog between the two main characters. Having them back and forth convos, which are mostly humorous, makes it a easy and enjoyable read.

The negatives really come down to the pacing, it seems off, or rushed. It also wraps up to easy for such a BIG threat. I also didn't like some of the forced background stories making the characters seem weaker when it should be about growth not forced emotion.

Either way this did get me excited enough to want to continue. I also really should get on that GL omnibus...I will I swear....I just need money...I NEED MONEY...okay I'm good. A 3/5!

In DC's Rebirth reset, all of the senior Green Lanterns of Earth are away across the cosmos (you can read about their adventures in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, Volume 1: Sinestro's Law), leaving the duty to protect Space Sector 2814 to a pair of fresh new recruits. I've been excited about this series because it seems like a great new direction for the Green Lantern mythos, by telling a modern story through fresh eyes. It brings the Green Lantern concept back to its core of being a space cop story.

In a structure that recalls many buddy cop stories, we witness Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz not only deal with being forced to work together as a team (they have to share one Power Battery!), but also deal with growing themselves as heroes. Simon deals with anger issues and Jessica has anxiety and doubt in herself as a Lantern. The story here is pretty stupid and throwaway though, with the duo trying to stop Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns from turning Earth into a breeding ground for rage and bringing about what he dubs the Red Dawn. It feels like they tacked a story on to the book as a requirement, and I know the Red Lanterns are more interesting than this and deserve better. But the strength here is on our relatable heroes, and I'm interested to see where this goes!

I really loved this because I'm a fan of both Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Their personalities are so different, so it's interesting to see them overcome these differences. Also, they are flawed as Lanterns, so their struggles against their flaws are compelling to read. In particular, Jessica's battle against anxiety attacks makes her a very different kind of superhero. The conflict between her fear and the willpower it takes for her to even go out the door is powerful. As an added bonus, Bleeze's backstory is explored, and I felt really sorry for her. Making villains somewhat sympathetic add a welcome layer of complexity to the story.

Centred around a duo that takes a while to grow on you, they tell the story together by sharing the narrative prose between them. However, they tend to be overly repetitious in both thoughts and dialogue, making the first few issues especially, quite a chore to read. The story attempts high stakes right off the bat, yet fails to present any sense of real danger. That being side, despite its flaws, it's still enjoyable to watch the arcs that the protagonists go on, and by the end, there is a feeling of wanting to read more. Not the most impressive, but far from bad, it sets up more potential later down the line whilst settling for a decent start.

I missed when Jess and Simon both became the current Green Lanterns of Earth, or why exactly Hal is off in deep space. I assume that will be explored more thoroughly in his book. I guess how much you like this book will depend on how much you like Jess and Simon, and I liked Jess rather more than Simon. It's not that I don't like him, it's just that he's more or less interchangeable with any number of impulsive young mean I've encountered in fiction, and it's only the exact details of his dramatic past (internment at Gitmo) that makes him stand out in that crowd. Sure, he's likable, if somewhat bland, but I found Jess and her struggles with anxiety and borderline (?) agoraphobia much more interesting and relatable. The story is could be fairly interesting, except that it felt like it went on for a bit too long. Not the best possible way to start off a new book, but it isn't bad, and I really like one of the main characters. Besides, I want to see where Humprhies is going with Bleez.

Solid first outing for the new green lantern recruits. Both characters are at differnt ends of the personality spectrum. You have the overly confident Simon and the anxious and to a certain degree frightened Jessica. Both have to tackle the red lantern threat, which has appeared to spread a Rage virus. Interesting dialogue between the 2, if a little cliched, the plotting/story is pretty weak if not predictable. The artwork is ok not amazing but seems to suffer from the same issue as the story. Its just a little disoriented, it doesn't seem to know how to flesh out 2 main protagonists that well. Interesting take on how each character struggles with their inner thoughts to control the power. Not sure if I'll continue with the series. May pick it up later.

Hal Jordan finds 2 misfits and brings them together to make this buddy cop series.

I mean misfits like this, Simon baz is a Muslim who’s house is being vandalized with stuff saying “terrorists”, Jessica Cruz was hiding in her apartment for 3 years because of anxiety.

The good in this is the relationship between Simon and Jessica which at times was annoying but also nice, I quite liked the story with the rage seeds and really liked the art.

The bad is that I felt some parts were boring during dialogue between the red lanterns and sometimes Simon was really cocky and annoying

Overall good book

I received this from Edelweiss and DC Comics in exchange for an honest review.

Pretty good story showing the development of the two newest Green Lanterns from Earth, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.

I'm interested to see what happens with this new rogue guardian and his special ring, as well as the planted rage seed, so I'll keep reading.

Totally love these new Lanterns. Jessica Cruz in particular is really breathing some new life into the Green Lantern Corps. My only issue is that you'd think that if the planet was being overtaken by Rage and the Red Lanterns, a few people from the JLA would have showed up to try to help.

The Green Lantern line expanded to an almost ungainly level at certain points of the New 52, with 4 or 5 books running at once. Rebirth strips that back to just two; Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, which focuses on the Corps at large (and is excellent), and Green Lanterns, a more Earth-centric book that focuses on the two newest Green Lanterns of Earth, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.

Both had a lot of groundwork laid in the New 52, but were never really explored as characters. Writer Sam Humphries really digs into them as characters in this opening arc, as Jessica's insecurities and Simon's overcompensations all bubble to the fore as the Red Lanterns attempt to take over our planet from the inside out. Character work has always been a strength of Humphries' work (see Avengers AI, or Uncanny X-Force, for example), and his insights into what really makes these characters tick drives this story. His Red Lanterns are a little more one-note than usual, but considering all of the over-wrought philosophy that has gone into them in the past few years, having them back to WE ARE ANGRY AND BURN THINGS is a nice change.

Robson Rocha draws the majority of these issues, with a couple of fill-ins nearer the end. His work is well suited for the more visceral characters like the Red Lanterns, but his facial expressions sometimes go a little wonky. Oh, and Ethan Van Sciver draws the Rebirth issue, because why the hell not.

Even though Hal Jordan's the GL book I'm enjoying the most, this is a great character-focused book that pairs well with HJ&TGLC's wider view.

Nice to see Jessica and Simon in action as Green Lanterns. Glad the rings picked them. The rage lantern group was very scary. Wonder when the seed will take over the Earth. Happy that Simon and Jessica's first mission as Green Lanterns went okay. Rami seems interesting.

Can't wait to read Green Lanterns, volume 2: The Phantom Lantern!!!!

I don't understand the books that are written by young guys, that have dialogue that seems like it is from the 90s. Usually, the newer writers hold back on the over explaining within the narration. this book is the complete opposite. Over and over again, Cruz and Baz are telling us what their personalities are like, instead of showing us. They are saying how dangerous and scary the rage virus that the Red Lanterns are spreading is, without us actually seeing much of it. This book is all tell and very little show. This is something that really started to change, by 2006/2008.

I'm glad I finally read this. On Rage Planet the plot is on the background, the character development is the real attraction. Which makes it hard at first when the main characters seem so unlikable. But as the events unfold, the Red Lanterns are planning to turn Earth into their new home planet spreading a rage infection, we see these lanterns facing extreme situations that slowly change their vision of themselves. It's greatly done really, it takes a while to build up, it takes some patience to get used to their internal monologues. (I was specially annoyed by the overwhelming amount of times Simon and Jessica introduce themselves to the reader, "Hi, I'm Jessica" "My name is Simon Baz" one or two times every issue, it felt like reading a middle-school presentation, but that's just me). But it pays off. Jess, suffering from anxiety, and Baz, a muslin man falsely accused of terrorism, are so flawed and wrapped up on their own problems as it is that it's hard to believe they will ever be able to become partners. They are very different people, their insecurities come from very different places and it can be really hard to understand someone else's problems when you are so heavily burdened by your own. Their first story together is the process of them becoming green lanterns and learning to understand each other.
On a personal note I always admired the concept of Jessica Cruz, but somehow was too apprehensive to read this volume in fear that the writing would be a let down. Mental illness is a complicated issue to tackle. The thing is that by the end of 2021 my anxiety aggravated and I started to have constant panic attacks, I became too afraid to leave the house which led me to finally seek professional help. I'm stable now and things are slowly improving, but if you want to get a glimpse of the experience of having a panic attack just read Jessica's thoughts on this volume. Sam Humphries did a good job portraying the multiple contradictory thoughts that float inside an anxious mind. Sometimes I felt like I was reading my own thoughts so I had to pause my reading and come back later. But when I finished I had this warm feeling, I know it's only fiction and things are different in real life, but for a minute it felt good to read someone overcoming this awful condition. End of personal note.
As stated before the plot is not the driving force of this volume, but despite being pretty straight-forward, we do have some interesting developments on that front as well. Simon unlocked Emerald Sight, an ability to get a glimpse of the future; and reinforced his apparent ability to "cure" people. At some point he actually cures the red lantern Bleez of her blinding rage, she later on turns back to her old furious self, but she was changed by that moment of clarity, hopefully this will be a story-line later in the future. I'm really interested in seeing how these new abilities will shape Simon's future as a green lantern. I hope Humphries give us some insightful answers later on.
I'm not in love with these characters, but I don't have to be. The deal with green lanterns is that they are often pretty damn flawed. Jessica and Baz have their charms and are just beginning here. By the end of this volume these lanterns are still a work in progress and that is good thing.

This is the Rebirth Green Lanterns, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. They’re both very new to GLs and struggling with both their new powers and duties. Jessica is pretty open that she doesn’t think she’s worth the ring. She has an anxiety disorder and didn’t leave her home for years. She also feels guilty, because her friends died (murdered in some other comic I think) and she ran away and lived. Simon also feels guilty about causing a car accident that left his sister’s husband in a coma for years. His sister doesn’t blame Simon, though. Simon has little experience with the ring but Jessica has none and she can’t even form objects with it. He thinks that she’s a screw-up and she simply doesn’t like him.

In the first issue, we get a little glimpse of their lives and personalities before the ring calls them to action. Hal appears to inform that he’s leaving Earth and they must work as partners. He also claims that the JLA will train the duo. Unfortunately, the training didn’t happen.

Next, our heroes are thrust to action trying to round up aliens. When they find instead a lair of a serial killer, the people in the town are justifiably angry. But their anger grows to unnatural rage. That’s the effect of Rew Dawn, the big threat in this volume. Jess and Simon must find out the source of the rage and put a stop to it.

Both GLs are rookies just learning to use their rings. Simon knows more about it than Jess, though. Both also have very strong inner demons to wrestle with. It was interesting to see a superhero with an anxiety disorder but I’m don’t know if it was handled well. At one point Jess was almost paralyzed with fear but then she just talked herself out of it, which a bit seemed strange. The way that the woman was the anxiety and fear-driven wreck and also a total rookie and the man is an overconfident hotshot who teaches the woman how her own ring works is… well, it’s nothing new. The characters are fine but surprisingly old school. I rather liked their supporting cast. Jessica’s sister is supportive. Simon’s sister’s family supports him.

I’ve only seen these characters in the Rebirth JLA but they seemed to be created before Rebirth, because both have lots of history which are only briefly explored in this volume. I’m also not familiar with the Red Dawn duo of Bleez and Atrocitus. We get Bleez’s tragic backstory which was nice.

The art team is very variable. But their styles work together enough that the changing artists didn’t really bother me.

I feel that this comic was done for long-time GL readers rather than someone new. But I still mostly enjoyed it. Both characters must struggle with their inner demons while they battle very powerful enemies and try to work together.

Rage Planet is a decent story. I like it more for the protagonist characters than the story and antagonists. I first found out about Jessica when I saw the "Justice League vs. The Fatal Five" film and decided to check out the comics that she's in because I love her character. I'm glad that I checked out this book. I like her character arc in this book too. Her struggle with anxiety is written very well as is her character development.

I also like Simon Baz. While more attention was on Jessica's arc, he also had some good character development. He struggles with remorse from the past and was also wrongfully accused and incarcerated in Guantanamo. His arc was very well written too. I wasn't a fan of how he initially treated Jessica, but I like how he and Jessica grew closer at the end. I also like how he dealt with Bleez.

But, I'm not a fan of the antagonists or the plot overall. I like Bleez, especially after her backstory was fleshed out during the middle of the book. Her struggle was depicted well also. However, the rest of the antagonists weren't great. They weren't the best antagonists. They were a challenge to Jessica and Simon, but I didn't find them or their goal of making everyone overcome by rage to be intriguing either. It sounds better on paper than it did in execution in the book. Perhaps it's because we didn't see as much of the consequences of this in the book, which was (understandably, particularly since this is volume 1) more focused on Simon and Jessica's arcs. The stakes didn't feel as high and Atrocitus wasn't the most exciting villain either. I've also seen similar villainous plots (infecting protagonists or civilians generally with rage) before and this one didn't stand out as much.

Still, I felt that the protagonists arcs were solid and that's what kept the book intriguing to me. The art was good too and the pacing was consistent. I'm excited to read more. Altogether, this is a decent book and I plan to check out Volume 2.

I really enjoyed both Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, especially Cruz. I love how she’s a superhero that struggles with her anxiety. Very relatable and not something I’ve ever seen portrayed in a superhero story.

The actual story here is just okay, but it’s carried by strong characters and witty banter.

I look forward to reading more in this series, at some point.

Není to tak dobrý jako Johnsův run ale i tak se jedná o fajn seznamovačku s novými Lanterny. Bavil jsem se, protože jde o dobrý superhero mainstream. Ale ta změna kresby v půlce jako wtf? To mě dost zklamalo.

Beware the RED DAWN!!! Green Lanterns is the first series entry from former Marvel scribe Sam Humphries. He is not alone in this quest for Humphries is join by artists Ethan Van Sciver & Ed Benes. Two celebrated comic book artist. So needless to say the book looks fantastic. Green Lanterns is more of an introduction to the newest green lanterns of Earth Simon Baz and former Power Ring, jessica Cruz. Sam Humphries gets to cut loose and have some fun with this series. He begins Jessica and Simon's journeys as lanterns by putting them up against Atrocitus and the Red Lanterns. From beginning to end we get a buddy cop action book that sees our rookie Lanterns trying to not only master their rings powers but also learning to get along. If Baz and Cruz can't work out their differences it will only mean the end of the earth. I felt this series was really well done and I was impressed by the ideas the Humphries is bringing to the Green Lantern mythos. The artwork is pretty solid. The colors and panels are just pleasing to look at and really capture the wonder of the DC cosmic universe. I can not wait to read the Phantom Ring story arc.

Green Lanterns, when written by Geoff Johns back in the day, was one of my favourite series coming out of DC. Well, everything he touches turns to gold, but I was quite interested in his two newest characters; Simon Baz, a Muslim Lebanese-American man who suffers racial discrimination since the 9/11 attacks, and Jessica Cruz, a Hispanic-American who suffers from mental illness. It was a moment of clarity when I read about these two people, as I felt connected to comic characters in a way I never expected when picking up an “action-adventure comic”. Feeling linked to characters is not something I look for in a good story, it is simply a bonus whenever it happens, the other DC character I felt so captivated and akin to was Raven, and that was back in the really old runs.

The story is not much about the intergalactic travels of Green Lanterns, but rather on the personal dynamics between two people that are quite different, but share similar experiences, and are left to buddy up to help protect the very same people that constantly fight against them in their personal lives because of who they are. Plus they are members of the Justice League, who will aid in their training, it is awesome.
