Perfect for teens and up and a good distraction from everyday life. I got lost in this novel and I can't wait to get lost in another one of your adventures... cheers!

I loved this book! I was totally captivated by the story and the main character. I couldn't wait to turn each page to see where the author took me next. It took me out of my daily routine and into a new world where magic and possibilities and friendships were formed. Awesome book. Looking forward to the sequel!

“Even if we didn’t see the waterfall or the walkway lined with trees every day, it was still real. It was out there somewhere, waiting for you to stumble across it and snap a picture.”

This book was a first for me, the first Urban fantasy book I read. And I loved it
description
I was literally hooked from the very first chapter; Christine Rees knows who to get you on your toes!
And this was one of many favorite things in this book, cause I actually hate it when a book starts slowly, I feel like I am dragging myself to get into the story.
Now this beautiful book talks about a girl who gets visions about dead people, this curse haunted her since she was a little kid, and she did her best to cope up with it. Up until she had a vision of her new friend getting killed; confused between what’s happening and what is supposed to happen, Faye Lithyer has a lot of tough choices to make.

“I wrote about that as well, explaining how I wished my own colors shown as brightly as the ones in the photos. I wanted to stand out the way those colors did. I wanted to shine brightly. Not like the photo of the rotten tomato which stood out because it was hideous. It wasn’t enchanting. It wasn’t beautiful. It was ugly and no one wanted it. That’s what I ended up writing about.”

The part of the visions reminded me of my absolute favorite series of all times Ghost Whisperer.
description
It isn’t a repeated version or anything. Everything about this story is original!, the characters, the twist, the writing, the whole story was a first for me, I didn’t encounter anything similar to it so that was great Bonus.

Christine Rees’s writing was pretty fascinating, this is her very first book, and I believe she nailed it!
Reading about high-schoolers with Super powers and super natural Events isn’t usually my kind of books, but this book made me change my perspectives about this genre, in a very good way!

The characters were pretty well written, Faye, the Heroine was super cute, a little stubborn, but so brave, and determined. She had a few insecurities, but that’s what made her so relatable to me.
description
And honestly my favorite character is Ethan, I was just dying from laughter. He’s so funny and cute! uhhh * sighing*

~ I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review ~

Everyone has dreamt of having super amazing powers at some point in their lives, therefore books about this premise are popular. The Hidden Legacy focuses on a group of teenagers who develop such skills, and reading about them all was exciting, especially the different skills each possessed. Kinda hoped for more epic fighting scenes, or more where they tried to enhance their abilities, because I’m just fascinated by the concept.

The female characters were my favourite aspect of this text; they all had such developed personalities, and rather than being placid, they all fought their own battles. In all honesty it was the males that needed to step up their game, but maybe that was because they didn’t feature all that much.

Adding a love interest/triangle was unnecessary to the story, especially as it didn’t even lead anywhere therefore remained a distraction from the actual focus. Faye in all honesty wasn’t the most exciting character and I struggle to believe that all these boys found her extremely infatuating due to her reputation she gained for being a “badass”, all because she has a blue streak in her hair (?), got detention (??), and skips lessons (???).

Reveals within the book felt rushed, which threw me off since there was no need for it. The author kind of just states that everyone has gifts without much explanation or emotion. It kind of leaves the characters feeling blank in some way. It was just strange that it came across as basically “Oh, we all have these abilities, cool right? Moving on…” Furthermore the major dilemma of the book seemed extremely anticlimactic; it’s solved really easily in about a 5 minute scene, so it seemed a let-down as it wasn’t really anything for them to worry about. Additionally the plot seemed to be a tad unrealistic (excluding the supernatural aspects!!) – characters jumped to conclusions without much evidence to support themselves, which makes it rather flimsy as a story since the reader cannot support the ideas.

The twist at the end was alright, although I wouldn’t say it was as shocking as it was intended to be. As a result it had a negative impact on the ending for me, since I found it a tad predictable and not exactly all that problematic. Makes it seem like that’s the centre dilemma of the next novel, which in my opinion would be rather dull.

*This book was provided in exchange for an honest review. The review is not manipulated by any means.

I was hooked by the story of the book the moment I finished Chapter 1. I fell in love with the story the moment I was in the middle of the book. I was thirsty for more by the moment I finished it.

It wasn't like other books where it would grab your attention after reading a couple of chapters. This book actually got me reading for more the moment I was in the middle of Chapter 1. It made it hard to take my eyes off the screen to rest from reading.

I loved the way the author build the story. The way the events turned out and the play on characters. The consistency of turn in events is what got me hooked the most.

The uniqueness of the story made it fun to read. Especially because I'm a fan of the Percy Jackson books and the Mortal Instruments. This book also has those characters with abilities or "curses" but the author didn't use the ordinary kind of characters instead, she used a brainstormed kind of characters. Especially their ancestral information.

The ending will surely make you want to read the sequel as soon as possible. It will make you want to pre-order the sequel as soon as it is available.

Overall, it was a story that I have taken an interest of. I love the fresh concept that the author used. The characters will sure get you connected to them. If you're a fan of Rick Riordan or Cassandra Clare, then this book is for you.

Each October I hunt for a new book that delivers that delightful eerie vibe, and I was so excited to dive into The Hidden Legacy by Christine Rees, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!
This book for me felt like a blend of Twilight meets X-men and I mean this in a very, very good way. Faye is a relatable main character, and you feel her struggle as she moves to a new town, new school and navigates this knowing her abilities and the complications she had in the past fitting in, while dealing with the power of premonition.
Can I just say I freaking love Alec!?😍 Witty, sarcastic and a mechanic?! I may have a new book to fangirl over, and I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel. I highly recommend picking up this wonderful debut novel!!!

Uncaged Book Reviews:

I’m not giving anything away, but this book is a home-run on all fronts. It started a tad slow, but when it picked up, it really picked up. I had a hard time putting this one down. The characters are likable, and the mystery and the twists that the book takes, surprises both the reader and the characters. I only predicted a couple things that happened in the book, and the pace was never let up. Great start to a series and I’m looking forward to the next one. Write Ms. Rees, write.

I had to think hard about how to write this review. I have a lot to say about it, but... It's simply not that positive in general and that makes this such a challenge... Anyway!

When I started reading, I was pleasantly surprised by the pace of the story and the writing style. It honestly reads really fluently because I got through it record time. And that's pretty much where it ends.

Okay, no. I did like the characters, a bit. But they gave me a whiplash at times. Going from full-on highschool drama to acting all grown-up and back again was honestly hurting my brain. Although I liked their traits, the behaviour got on my nerves.

As far as the story goes, there's only one word to describe it. Predictable. There weren't any surprises. I knew everything almost from the get-go and that was such a pity. It made the story feel anything but unique to me, although it definitely has its unique sides as well.

If you don't mind predictable fantasy novels, you'll probably like this one! It simply wasn't something I like.. It was okay, but that's it.

2.5 stars.

Faye has an ability where she can see someone at the moment of their death, and when she sees the murder of someone she knows, she has to decide whether to tell her or not, and try to stop her murder from happening.

I'm a little disappointed, this story started out so intriguing, and had so much potential, but there were a few things that didn't work well.

Firstly I noticed several continuity errors, which is jarring and ruins the flow of the story.

Also Faye and her friends seem to make huge leaps in knowledge from one or two flimsy clues. For example You can see the author is trying to keep the story moving, but it really could be handled more smoothly.

This book was provided in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book that I have read from this author and I was definitely impressed with us originality and strong storyline. This is the first book in the series and it has a cliffhanger that will have you rushing to the pre-order button.

Faye moves into her grandmother's house and meets a group of friends except one of them she sees their death over and over before she even meets her.

The book was slow in the beginning but it really picks up in the middle, there are very alot of mysteries that are solved at the end but the one that stomped me happened right at the end!!

I enjoyed reading this book, it has twists and turns, a hint of puppy love and strong characters. I would love to read more on the families and a background. I am sure with Faye's mom back in town, there will be more secrets and answers brought to light.

*Thanks NetGalley for an e-copy in exchange for an honest review*

This book was honestly much better than I expected. It’s a group of kids who find out they have super abilities and try to avoid being hunted down. I would very likely read the second book, hoping that it would be technically better.

It felt very Sky High meets The Midnighters (trilogy by Scott Westerfeld).

Rating: 3.5/5

Faye’s stepmother drops her off at her grandmother’s after her dad dies. But Faye is not-your-normal-girl™️ because she has visions of people’s deaths. Sometimes theses deaths haven’t happened yet and sometimes they happened years before, but Faye has never been able to stop them from happening. Her first day at the new school, she has another vision, stronger and clearer than any she’s had before. Things get stranger when the girl in her vision, Rachel, introduces herself at school and they become friends. Faye has to figure out how she’ll prevent Rachel’s murder while fitting in at the new school.

Diversity: +4
Race/Ethnicity: +1 (Rachel=quarter-Japanese?), +1 (Jacob=half-black?)
Gender: +1 (Author), +2 (Faye, Rachel, Hannah, Lucy)
Neurodiversity: -1 (Lucy’s mother)

What I liked:
-I tend to enjoy stories about teenagers coming into powers they don’t know how to control. I loved how different all of the powers were and how they develop and really want to know more about everyone.
-Beautiful female relationships! They were friends, built each other up, and supported each other. We also had examples of girls fighting with each other (over a boy :/ sigh), but that was very clearly not acceptable and turned out to be more complicated than that anyway. While the boys sometimes fell flat and one-dimensional, all of the girls were well-developed and had personalities.
-The twist at the very end. It was one of the things that actually did a good job tying things together and made me want to figure out what happens next.
-Morally gray characters. Good and evil are always difficult to define and I liked how it was tackled. I would definitely have liked to learn more about the ancestors (The Families) and the Seekers of Evil (although that is such a meh name).

What I didn’t like:
-Crazy as an adjective. It’s used off-handedly to describe Faye when people didn’t believe her visions and to describe Lucy’s mom:
Her mom was nuts by the end. Sometimes she used to say things like, ‘they’re coming to get me.’ Sometimes she’d scream at Lucy to stay away from her for no reason.

If Faye didn’t like being called crazy for being different, I would have hoped that she would have pushed more against labeling Lucy’s mom as crazy. Given what we know by the end of the book, Lucy’s mom was probably not mentally ill; she was most likely stressed and people were probably out to get her. So many times people get written off as “crazy” and no one challenges why and it turns out they were right in the end. We need to address this trope! I wish someone had vindicated her memory in the end.
-Not-your-normal-girl™️ Faye. She doesn’t know how pretty or brave she is. She has a different name and comes to a new school where everyone is into her. She’s a size four with a blue streak in her blond hair (which apparently makes her super BA). She fits the chosen one trope, but honestly feels plain and is less interesting than literally any other girl in the story.
-The romance just felt like too much was going on. At one point it was like a love-quadrangle.
-The world-building and continuity didn’t make sense all of the time. It felt very deus ex machina where everything just happened to work out no matter what. I would have liked to learn more about their powers and how they work, but I’m assuming it will be better addressed in the next novel. There were also several spelling and grammar mistakes throughout.

This was fun! It's not perfect but it's a very enjoyable read and a page-turner. It has a lot of high school drama and in my opinion, it was predictable; but it also has some unique aspects I've never seen in any other YA books.

Did someone else feel the "Sky High" vibes? Because I did lol. It was fun. However, I wasn't able to connect with the characters, and I don't think I have a favorite....Maybe Hannah? She was kinda funny. I liked Faye too, but I didn't like the "I'm not beautiful, he's out of my league" cliche. I know sometimes authors use that to show character development in the future, but I prefer stronger characters.

The one character I didn't like at all was Grams, I don't know, I hated her attitude towards Carly, the stepmom, she didn't like her and she didn't have a good reason.

“Let me help you with that,” Grams said and tried to take the suitcase from me, but I refused. “A young girl shouldn’t be forced to carry such a heavy bag” Grams gave Carly a pointed look, but Carly was too busy trying to bring my other suitcase.

She's a grown ass girl grandma *eye roll*

SPOILER WARNING.
I also found some things that were very weird, for example.
-Faye says that she has premonitions of deaths that have already happened or that are going to happen. And I know my English is limited, but premonitions are ALWAYS something that it's going to happen, you can't have premonitions of the past.
- I was confused about the ancestor's book. Hannah's ancestor had the ability to control animals, so is that why Hannah can control water/earth? I guess it has something to do with nature, but it doesn't have a lot of sense.
-Faye almost died but she didn't. And she was feeling useless because she wasn't able to see that coming, she wasn't able to see her own death. But she didn't die...so that wasn't possible.
-Grams knew that "they" could find Faye, but she still left her for the weekend?? I know she had a reason but still ????

I know it sounds like I'm only focusing on the negative aspects, but I swear, I enjoyed it a lot! The pacing was perfect! If you are new to fantasy this is a great read! Or maybe if you just want an easy read and you don't mind a predictable fantasy book, read this. It's addictive and you will have fun, I promise.

When I read the description of The Hidden Legacy I immediately asked a copy for review.
It sounded so good! A girl with the curse of premonition! Hello? Need to read it.

Faye is a great character. She is very powerful, but doesn't really know how to control her powers.
I love the relationship Faye has with her grandmother, but I needed
a bit more dialogue between them. I wanted to feel the warmth between these two family members.
I adore Fayes friends. The only thing that I found a bit off was that on the first day she meets her *new best* friends. Right away, like that, they become best buds. I mean, everything is possible, but at a new school, new environment, new everything, I found it a bit off.

The plot is great, fast-paced and well written. Early on I did had a feeling that something
was not quite right about one of the characters. So when that person turned evil, I didn't find it a big surprise.

When the ending came, it came with a cliffhanger. And you know me and cliffhangers,
I love them when I have the second book on my bookshelves. I hate them when I don't have the
second book. I also do not like them if the cliffhanger is just an iffy one. One that you just don't
care about. A cliffhanger should be so exciting that after reading the book you just can't wait to have your
hands on the next one. My reaction to this cliffhanger was: 'oh, really? hmmmm....yeah
okay'. See, that's not a great reaction.

I do want to read the second book to learn more about the characters and find out what's going to happen to them. But, I don't have the need to read it right now.

All in all, I did enjoyed reading The Hidden Legacy and I do recommend it to everyone
who likes a good sci-fi/ fantasy book. Just don't expect that you will be blown away by
the ending.

The premise of this book is so intriguing, to say the least, Faye has the ability to see someone the moment of their death and she ends up seeing a friend murdered, now she has to choose to tell her and help solve the mystery or not. I'm not sure why, but every time I see a premise such as this I think of the show Dead Like Me, anyone? Anyway! This story kept me on my toes from the opening scene, which was a rollercoaster. Overall, I loved the characters, they were dynamic and felt wholly fleshed out, and enjoyed the pace of the novel. But I would say that there were moments when characters jumped to crazy conclusions with very little information to back up their claims, which really threw me off while reading because it was unrealistic and pushed me out of the world. Otherwise, I think that this will shape up to be an amazing series and I am excited to see what's in store for Faye.

"Now I see dead people"

The most frightening thing about 16 year old Faye's ability to see dead people is that she sees them as a premonition before they are murdered and yet in the excellently written debut novel The Hidden Legacy by brilliant author Christine Rees she cannot stop her father's death.

The brilliance of this novel is that it combines everything readers of fantasy, YA paranormal, coming of age and comic books love. Faye just wants to be "normal" but when she makes friends at her new school who can control someone's mind, seem to be invisible (yes seem to be - no spoilers), and zap a person's life energy her loneliness and low self-esteem dissipate as she slowly comes to accept that maybe she isn't a cursed but a gifted human.

There are many sub plots from the actual hidden legacy, which is connected to the salem witch trials and creatively presented, to life decisions when Faye sees Rachel's murder and must decide to either keep quiet and risk Rachel's life or tell her about the premonition and risk her own life.

There are heartfelt relationships, my favorite being Ethan and Faye, especially since he is far from being "normal". There are action packed physical and emotional scenes that are crafted with literacy precision so that they played out like a movie in my mind. I saw it all and want to see more. Fortunately Book 2, The Broken Rivalry is available Now!

If you are a fan of shows like Medium, Supernatural, The Ghost Whisperer, X Men, The Avengers (mostly Wanda), and any teen drama from 90210 to Riverdale this is the book you want to read.

I received a free copy of this book from the author via #netgalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

My inner 16-year-old self loved this book. It was fast paced and entertaining. I flew through it like I used to fly through the Vampire Diaries and the Secret Circle series. My 25 year-old self however, thought this book was too full of high school drama and kids getting themselves into situations they are too young for. No, there was nothing that happened that needed over a PG-13 rating, but still. 16-year-old kids getting themselves into these intense deadly situations just seems unreasonable. The good news is, I think this book is intended for a middle-to-high school aged audience and when I was that age, I would have eaten this one up.

Each character was likable to a certain extent, there was the typical high-school clique members (new girl, jock, smart one, fashionista, bad boy, etc.) with typical high school drama happening every five seconds. The plot was predictable but had some unique aspects and overall was enjoyable. I pretty much knew how everything was going to go down, but I was still excited to read and there were a few surprises at the end that I appreciated.

I was definitely in the mood for a fun and easy YA read so I did enjoy The Hidden Legacy. Do I think it is quality literature? No. But am I going to take a break from reality and read the second book in the series for fun? Probably.

This book is perfect for teens and fans of stories with characters like peculiar children, X-men etc 😎 I instantly got hooked onto the main character's crucial decisions that helped save her new circle of friends. I have to admit that some characters are such a comedic relief, unlike most works of this kind and blends into the story very well. Its not a long read so you guys should be able to finish it within just two days. ✨

The superhuman abilities led to each characters coming together to unravel more truth about their families and ancestors at different turns.😖 Faye, the protagonist, is able to live a happier life as she makes more friends, but is still haunted by her father's suicide that she believes is in fact a murder!😰 She is on a chase-to stop the murder of her new bestie, who also has super powers and helps Faye to uncover the truth along their journey! 🏃‍♀️There are a few elements of teen love and chemistry that rounds up on the whole high-school life. 👫

So, if you ask a quick opinion on this book, it is a quick read which takes us back to our younger days and our old fantasies of what 'THE life' would be😅. I loved the cover theme and am keeping myself calm while waiting for the second book!😍

I can't say enough good things about The Hidden Legacy by Christine Rees.

Reading the book had me hooked at the very beginning with a strong main character named Faye and an intriguing story to follow. I like the sense of community the group of friends created. Faye went from being an outsider to finding people who understood her struggles for the first time in her life.

I loved the mystery of the story and I read almost half the book in one sitting because I couldn't stop. I was so invested in the story I gave up sleep to finish the book. There are certain details about where the book leaves things off that took me by surprise and I'm here for it. I am excited to see how things unfold in the next book.

I enjoyed reading The Hidden Legacy and just started book 2 to see what happens next. This book brought me out of a reading slump and I'm thankful for that.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Christine and she is a very down-to-earth and friendly person. I can't wait to see where her stories take me and I know I'll be getting the next books to see where Faye's story takes me.

The Hidden Legacy was definitely action-packed. A group of teens with abilities are wreaking havoc in their own lives. They don't know why they're special. They're barely able to control their powers as the powers grow and change. Plus, they don't know who to trust. Can they even trust their families or each other?
Enter the mysterious bad guys. The discovery of a diary points to a conflict between their families and others spanning centuries. So, why have their parents left them in the dark? How do they fight without exposing themselves? And, most importantly, can they figure out the enemy's identity and come together as a team to stay alive?
I love the premise. It reminds me of Heroes or X-men. Bonus: there's a witchy connection! I just had a hard time staying focused and present within the story because the writing style had me mixed up a little. Sometimes the style just isn't for you, and that's ok. If you enjoy abilities and mystery, give this one a shot.

Faye Lithyer has been cursed with the ability to witness death. She never knows when or where it will happen, or if it is already in the past. She struggles to see her ability as a gift when all it does is bring her pain and sadness.

When her father mysteriously dies, Faye moves in with her grandmother where she begins a new life and attends a new school. School is going great until one of her new friends, Rachel, becomes the victim in one of Faye's visions. Faye struggles to decide if she should share this news with her new-found friend or find the murderer is before it is too late.

(I received an ARC of "The Hidden Legacy" in exchange for my honest review.)

Christine Rees has created a story full of mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed how the story continued to build throughout the book. Just when I thought I had figured out the storyline, the author would throw in a curve ball. "The Hidden Legacy" ends with a great cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here!

Faye is a great character; well developed with self awareness, wise beyond her years while still having to face everyday teenage challenges. In fact - all characters were like this.
Great character development.

There’s mystery wrapped in more mystery at times and while I did predict everything that’s happened so far, I’m still not sure what direction it will take as it ended on a cliffhanger.

Absolutely cannot wait to read the next installment.

This book also had action, teen drama, a little bit of romance, and some fast but fierce friendship. Strongly recommend.

4 stars.

Wow, I saw this book and decided to read it on a whim because the premise and the cover intrigued me. I am so glad I decided to read it! This book reads quite fast and I was sucked in to this world and characters. I have to say when I first started reading it, I was not expecting to like it since it didn't seem to be my usual kind of read. The mystery revolving around the characters leaves you wanting to know more and I would like to read the second book in this duology!

*Minor spoilers*I also loved the romance in this, thought it was going to be a big love triangle, but YAY!

A clean read that reminds me of X-Men. Faye has para-normal abilities that ostracize her from her classmates. She is given a new chance when she moves to her Grandmother's house in Astoria, Oregon. Unfortunately, she has a premonition of someone's death. Even more unfortunately, that person is the first person she meets at her new school.

Thriller meets teenage romance meets supernatural meets mystery - an all-engaging and encompassing story that you won't be able to put down. Even at the end, you'll be wanting more. A diverse, real group of characters; you find yourself rooting for and against the individuals while following these teens from Astoria along mysterious stories that can have unexpected turns and keep you on your toes. Looking for the sequel already!
