THE FRAIL BODY OF A YOUNG BOY IS FOUND DISCARDED IN AN OLD CARDBOARD BOX. EVEN IN A HARD-EDGED TOWN USED TO DEADLY CRIMES, THIS TOUCHES A NERVE.
New York Times bestselling author Da Chen has said E.R. Fallon writes the kind of stories that “. . . we stay up all night to finish.”
Who dumped the boy’s body in this desolate part of the city and why? And why is he missing his spleen?
BODY IN THE BOX is the first book in a gripping new mystery series featuring three very different homicide detectives.
Detectives Dino Cooper and Terry Jackson have been partners and friends for years. Now a new detective is drafted in to join them: Rebecca Everhart. They must quickly learn to work together on the biggest case of their careers, the disturbing discovery of the ‘Body in the Box’, as it’s known by the captivated media and the city’s worried citizens.
The case takes the three detectives deep inside the lives of Newark’s insular Eastern European immigrant community and the world of unlawful medical practices. It also brings back an eerie childhood memory of Dino’s, where a boy from his neighborhood vanished and was never seen again.
What appears to be a straightforward, modern-day murder case has more to do with the past than the present, and the detectives come to a genuinely unnerving — and life-threatening — conclusion.
This gripping detective novel following the work and relationship struggles of the detectives will appeal to fans of Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins, Dennis Lehane, or Lisa Unger.
THE DETECTIVES Detective Rebecca Everhart is a tough and blunt top detective with a family background in law enforcement. She loves the surprised look on a criminal’s face when a woman arrests him.
Detective Terry Jackson is a hardworking by-the-book detective, and a family man, but lately his family life has been anything but normal. Just what is that big secret his wife is hiding from him? There’s also the conflict he has with his highbrow father, who never liked cops even though his son became one.
Detective Dino Cooper is a streetwise, old-school detective with a dark past and a brother who was murdered by the Irish mob. Dino’s good looks and charm allow him to sometimes bend the rules a little in the name of justice.
THE SETTING Newark is the biggest city in the state of New Jersey, a gritty waterfront city with a large port. It’s a place that some call home but also somewhere many workers commute in to from the suburbs. It’s considered a dangerous city by some, but in recent years has been somewhat revitalized. One of the most diverse cities in the world, it’s a place full of life and great stories.
Best-selling crime author E.R. Fallon knows well the gritty city streets of which she writes. She studied criminology and was mentored by a leading advocate for the family members of homicide victims. E.R. is currently working on her next gangland book, Tommy's Turn, with her writing partner, KJ. The New York Times best-selling author Da Chen has said E.R. writes the kind of stories that "We stay up all night to finish."
A great read! This crime novel had some very well written sideline stories and was a quick read. A gritty tale that will grab you at the first page and hold on tight through to the very end. Nice to have a crime book that read somewhat different to many that are out there in it's tone also.
It's a cracking plot - a young boy is found in a cardboard box dumped at a derelict site known for it's drug users, drug deals and the undesirables that roam the area. Did anyone see this beautiful dead boy get dumped? Was he killed at the site or elsewhere? These are all questions that Detectives Dino Cooper and Terry Jackson and their new partner Rebecca Everhart need to figure out.
I really connected to and liked the characters in this novel. Dino and Terry have been friends and partners for years and Rebecca is the new girl on the block, so she has something to prove. It doesn't take long before her keen policing abilities are respected and she is a key part of the investigation. All three characters are very different so they bring something new to the table.
I really liked where the plot went in regards to suspects. Nothing was truly clear but you got little tasters that had you thinking "maybe". I was intrigued from woe to go with this novel and really enjoyed the writing style very much. I would be eager to read more books from this author. I can see this book easily becoming a great movie and it wouldn't surprise me if it does.
It's a gritty and fast paced read, the side stories away from the main plot tackle relationships and friendships and I though they really added to the book overall. This great book gets 4 stars from me. Highly recommended for the crime thriller fan. Especially if looking for something outside of the box. The story of how the body came to be in the box will be a surprising one. One you won't forget.

Body in the Box is the first book in the Stygian Town Mystery Series that features 3 nerdy different homicide detectives.
Detectives Dino Copper & Terry Jackson have been partners and friends for years. A new detectives has been drafted in to join them, Rebecca Everhart. The all quickly have to learn to work together on the biggest case of their careers. The discovery of the body in the box.
Well written and page turning but I find cases investigating children difficult to read at times but overall this is an acceptable read.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author E. R. Fallon for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The body of a young boy is found in an old Maytag cardboard box. The detectives who are called to the scene are sickened that someone would have abandoned this youngster in such a way. There are no signs of injuries .. except that his spleen is missing.
Detectives Dino Cooper and Terry Jackson have been partners and friends for many years. And even though they are as different as night and day, they make a great team in solving crime.
During their investigation in which they are trying to find the boy's identity, Dino remembers a case from when he was a child himself, 30 years ago. A boy who lived across the street from him disappeared ... his body was never discovered. And when Dino discovers that boy's older brother lives in the area, he wonders if there could be a connection.
A third detective is assigned to them... Rebecca Everhart. Dino is immediately attracted, even though he's been married and divorced 3 times. Terry is married, but there is trouble in paradise.
The case takes the three detectives deep inside the lives of Newark’s insular Eastern European immigrant community and the world of unlawful medical practices.
What the detectives discover lead them face to face with a killer.
This is a very good mix of police procedure, detectives' private and professional lives. There are bursts of fast action filled with suspense. Characters are well-developed.
I wish to thank the author / Joffe Books / Netgalley for providing a digital copy of this novel. The opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Detectives Cooper and Jackson have a new case... They found a dead body of a child in the box one day with cold... They dont know nothing about this crime. They dont know nothing about this child. There is only a witness, the same who called 911 but they cant find another clue so to find answers. During of research their Captain sent them a new Detective to joined on their team. Detective Everhart.
So we've got a body in the box... no suspects, no witnesses and 3 detectives wich have their own life-problems. This book had it all... agony, action, secrets, pain, romance, guilts....
The only thing I didn't like was all about that romance and the personal information about the detectives... I would like if the writer focused more in the solution of the crime in spite of the other things.
Ok... 4 colding stars !!!!
P.S. The book was sent by the author of netgalley.com for an honest review
I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for a review copy of Body In The Box, a police procedural set in Newark, New Jersey.
Homicide detectives Dino Cooper and Terry Jackson are called out to a dead body, that of a young boy about 9 years old. With no visible signs of how he died and no identity it is going to be a tough case with plenty of pressure to solve it. Fortunately their captain has the solution and drafts in recent transferee, Rebecxa Everhart, to assist them. The case takes some unexpected turns before they arrive at a solution.
The Body In The Box is a fairly simple tale of an investigation into the death of a child interspersed with Terry's problems with his wife and Dino and Rebecca's personal lives. It isn't a profound novel but has a strong enough plot to keep you turning the pages. The characters are pleasant and get on well together but aren't particularly developed.
It is an easy way to pass a few hours and I enjoyed the plot but it's not a novel I would re-read.
Body in the box by e r fallen is a mystery and thriller read. THE DETECTIVES
Detective Rebecca Everhart is a tough and blunt top Russian-American detective with a family background in law enforcement. She loves the surprised look on a criminal’s face when such an attractive and seemingly small woman arrests him.
THE SETTTING Newark is the biggest city in the state of New Jersey, a gritty waterfront city home to a large port. It’s a place that some call home but many commute in from the suburbs to the numerous offices in the city. It’s considered a dangerous and impoverished city by some, but in recent years has been somewhat revitalized. One of the most diverse cities in the world, it’s a place full of life and great stories. This was a fantastic read with brilliant characters. I really enjoyed it. Full of twists and plots. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommended. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
The body of a young boy has been found abandoned in a Maytag box and they cannot find any missing persons case matching the young boy's description. Partners Dino Cooper and Teddy Jackson are assigned the case and then a new member of the team is assigned to them. A woman no less but they are told she has experience with child cases. As they look into the identity of the child they are lead into the heart of the Russian community and they are leery of the police. Meanwhile 2 times divorced Dino finds himself drawn to their new partner. Great read. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.
Terry & Dino were police partners. They were called to a crime scene in a bad part of town for a body in a big box. It turned out to be a young boy - dead. There also was a lady cop sent to help them find out who this boy was . Terry was married with a son & was working almost all the time, hardly ever home. Dino was single now & he liked the looks of the new lady cop. They found out that this boys body was a one time was operated on for his spleen. That was a start for them. In the process they also find out about another boy that was missing for years and what happened to him
I liked this one. A simple police murder mystery with interesting, likeable characters who will probably develop well in any future instalments. I am certainly interested enough to find out. It is unusual too because there is a team of three detectives instead of the usual pair.
In this story, a young boy is found dead - dumped in an old cardboard box at an abandoned factory site and the detectives must of course find the killer. It had a good pace that kept me interested rather than sending me to sleep and was short so I ended up reading it quickly.
Silent Murder is a police mystery with three distinct and engaging detectives. The plot not only follows the process of solving the crime, but also follows the detectives’ off duty activities.
The scene is set in Newark, New Jersey, and several neighborhoods are described in length. The author demonstrates familiarity with the city.
4 ½ *stars REALLY I WAS EXPECTING A CRIME THRILLER BUT THIS WAS MORE ABOUT THE CAST OF CHARACTERS PERSONAL LIFE. IT HAS A LOT OF BACK STORY WHICH TIES INTO THE STORY LINE BUT I THINK IT DWELLED TOO MUCH ON THAT. IT’S SAD THAT MOST PEOPLE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT CAN’T KEEP THEIR MARRIAGES OR RELATIONSHIPS TOGETHER. THE ENDING WAS PERFECT (I HAD FIGURED IT OUT) IT WAS AN ENJOYABLE READ. ;D
Felt more heavily based around the personal relationships than investigating the body of the title. Enjoyed it, but not as gripping as I would have liked and del the characters lacked substance.
Three very different officers are tasked with solving the crime of a young boy’s body found in a box. They tmust work together in a case with minimal evidence and witnesses and in a city of diversity and lies! This was a solid read but didn’t grip me totally but still great!
Loved the balance between the police procedures and the personal life of the 3 detectives on the case of a young boy found in a cardboard box. The detectives really work well together. Can't wait for more in the series
I liked the characters. They were believable in their roles. Am looking forward to more books featuring Detective Everhart. I am a voracious reader and it is not often that I am surprised at the ending but I was surprised at the ending and who the culprit was.
Ok book. Just didn't hold my interest and make me want to keep reading although I did not figure out who done it before the end of the book. That is a bug plus in my opinion.
I had to go back and read this book after I read Silent Murder, the second book in the series with these characters. In my opinion that book was better than this one. But I don't think I will read any more of the series. I just don't find them as engaging as others. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I appreciate the choices I have to choose from.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian I Dig Good Books.
This is a terribly tragic story of murder and the story behind the murder and the details that led up to the discovery. It branches off to the personal relationships of the detectives and their lives while trying to solve the murder of an 8 year old. This was, in a way, hard to read simply because it involved the death of a child. It could also be what really kept me reading the story. I had to know that the person who committed such a crime would get punished. I expected a bit more suspense to the story and felt that it was lacking. It wasn’t the type of story that kept you on the edge of your seat or kept you gripping your reading device as you read further to figure out what was going to happen. However, the way that it was written flowed well and still made for an entertaining read. The story line itself was decent and flowed well. The details were great and the descriptions were on par. I kind of felt that I was reading two different stories though that were brought together. First is the story of the child that was murdered and second is the story of the personal lives of the detectives and the day to day details of them. I don’t think that particular part of the story added any additional content that made the actual story line better. I enjoyed reading the story but just didn’t feel like I fully got the thriller or suspense out of the it. I can recommend the book as long as that is fully understood. It’s a good read and kept me intrigued from start to finish.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *
Body In the Box is a police procedural that is a quick read. Personally, this is one of my favorite genres to read and watch.
Two seasoned detectives in Newark, NJ learn of a young boys body found in a shady part of town via a mysterious phone call. This place is run-down, home to homeless when it's warm enough and a place for drug dealing. The two detectives, Terry Jackson and Dino Cooper go to check out the scene. They find the body in a discarded Maytag box.
Dino is immediately brought back to his childhood. When Dino was a young boy, a neighbor boy disappeared and was never found. This boy reminds Dino of his old neighbor, but it couldn't be. But when Dino finds out the older brother of the missing boy from his childhood lives in the area, things get a little more interesting. Dino is a somewhat lonely divorcee (a couple times over) and is playing the field until he finds the one.
Terry is a man who went into the police force despite his family's encouragement to go to medical school, like his father. Because of this, he and his father are not very close. Terry has a wife, Tulia and a teenage son, Jeffrey. They used to be happy, but it seems work is getting in the way lately and this case is no exception. The Chief has a lot of pressure on the detectives to bring in the person responsible.
So enter Rebecca Everhart, a new detective to the area who has had previous success solving cases like the one at hand. She's smart and cute and Dino immediately falls for her. She's not so sure she wants to get involved with someone at work though, it's one of her rules. Rebecca is an outsider so she sees things a little differently than Dino and Terry and may be the only one able to see the truth in this case. That is if she doesn't let her feelings for Dino get in the way.
This book ties together the different lives of the people who make up a city. There are your blue collar workers- the police, the homeless, and the Russian community (the three big groups). They all have a place to help solve this murder.
This book wasn't a huge mind-twister but enjoyable enough. I found myself liking the characters and the pace of the story. I look forward to reading more in the series as they come out. Sometimes it's nice not to have a book try so hard to be a crazy mind game, and that was this book to me.
Thank you to Joffe Books and NetGalley for my advance copy, it was my pleasure to provide an honest review!
Crime thriller - Body In The Box by E R Fallon. Set in Newark, New Jersey within the large Russian community where many are suspicious of law enforcement, homeless &/or substance abusers. This area provides the perfect backdrop for the death of an unidentified young boy found dumped in an old washing machine box. When examination of the body reveals an old surgical incision and a missing organ, suspicious circumstances are added to what appears to be a straight forward crime. The investigative team consists of three detectives. Terry is a hardworking officer & family man with marital issues & Dino an old school officer, currently single. Rebecca joins them shortly after & Dino finds he is attracted to her despite her tough exterior. Gathering evidence becomes difficult due to community suspicion and unreliable witnesses. Childhood memories become linked with a similar crime and readers are led down a trail they least expect before the real murderer is revealed. I particularly liked the way the author kept me guessing, developed the characters & melded details of their personal lives throughout without it becoming an unwelcome distraction. The story moved along at a good pace and certainly held my interest. This book was well worth reading & I would be interested others in the series. Note: this ebook was obtained in from NetGalley & I have given an honest review
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley and the review is based solely on my opinion of the novel.
As I started the novel, I struggled with the writing and the tempo of the plot development and it took forever to read through. With that said, the plot began to get more intriguing around chapter 7 and the novel became more enjoyable to complete.
The character development is lacking throughout with the subplot lines. The Tulia/Andrew subplot was not necessary. The author could have done a better job highlighting the difficulties of police life in families and the whole subplot could have been better developed.
The romance between Dino and Rebecca was strained at best based in its descriptions of them as people and throughout the courtship. The subplot was a nice addition but it could have been explored further with some additional character development with 2 of the main characters.
I was not a fan of the novel in the beginning however; the plot development helped in the end to take the book to a more enjoyable level. I would consider reading a novel by the same author in the future.

This showed up on Facebook of all places, a recommended read for 99p. I decided to part with that princely sum, and boy was it a great decision :) Police procedural are my favourite genre of TV, film and novel. This does not disappoint. The characters are great, though I found the side story of Andrew and Tulia to be a boring, pointless distraction. I'm not keen on sex scenes in books, and Tulia's almost betrayal of Terry, I really didn't need and to be honest neither did the story.
All in all a decent murder mystery to start the year, and start a series. My chief complaint is that the book was short on detail, we don't know the date (year or month), there isn't much description about the setting, and we don't know the age or physical description of any of the main characters.
Some of the dialogue is clunky, but I'm sure its miles beyond what I could achieve as a first-time novelist. Procedurally, Fallon's background shines through as far as I can tell. That is the real strength of the novel, that sense that the plot and denouement are quite authentic feeling.
