Jackson is questioning his mental health. Jackson is a military contractor, who has a fear of the dark…because it wants to kill him. Jackson thinks he might be safer in a war zone, but his imaginary friends disagree with him – they’re trying to convince him he’s more than he thinks. It might be time to kill himself, but Jackson has to go to a wedding. Jackson thinks he wants to find the girl that got away, but how many armies will he have to fight to get there, and who will have to die in the end? Jackson’s not sure what is real anymore or which real he prefers.

This is the second book I have read by this author. It was a significant improvement over his last book, the pacing was much better and the story was more clearly organized. The author clearly had developed as a writer and I would call this a complete story. I think the author again suffered the problem of too many characters that were underdeveloped, many of Jackson's allies left the stage for a time, and as a result were not as clear to me on their return. Perhaps a 'dramatis personae' at the end would help with this. It was not as much of an issue as the last book by this author. The author spoke much more clearly in this book as a personal work. This is in contrast to his last book which in some ways was a series of vignettes from pop culture. Some of the ideas on religion and what constitutes divine power were interesting and i would like to see the author explore more in the future. The relationship between Jackson and Barrow had a number of truly authentic feeling touches as did that between Jackson and Miller. The cover art fits the story perfectly.
I don't know that I would want to revisit the Breakworld universe as the way it's written one could leave the story open to several interpretations of endings. It's my understanding the author is working on his next piece of writing, and he will have at least one reader in the future. It's exciting to be able to read along with an author as they master their craft.
