The science and art of Biblical fasting lies in largely uncharted waters in the vast ocean of Christian traditions.
This is no ordinary book. The reasons, steps, practical aspects, and manner of fasting are laid out like LEGO. To be sure, fasting is no child’s play. Neither should it be quantum physics. Every believer should know why, when, and how to fast.
Few can address this serious Christian discipline with as much clarity and conviction as Sadhu Sundar Selvaraj. The essence of over two decades of living a fasted life and an unquenchable zeal to walk as Jesus did – percolates through every page of this book.
The many miracles – and sometimes mysteries of fasting as experienced first-hand by a true man of God will help you glow in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
This book is truly from a man that walks with our lord and savior Jesus Christ!! This book will be a blessing to anyone who reads and practice these principles.
Beware of the syncretism of Hindu practice into the Christian faith here.
I did a deep dive into this book to truly understand how the self-proclaimed prophet Sundar Selvaraj approaches the Christian faith. To him, the path to all things holy lie completely through intense fasting and prayer. If you read his own testimony of coming to Christ on his Jesus Ministries website, you'll see that intense fasting and praying and doing penance was what he did as a devout Hindu before he even became a Christian. He's simply carried over his Hindu practice to Christianity with minor adjustments, and that this show of piety is somehow effective in convincing God to shower us with miraculous blessings.
Sundar starts off giving a measured, careful approach, and outlines helpful principles to adopt for the practice of fasting, like having your heart in the right place, not asking like you're wishing for things. However, he then completely goes off the handle when he shares his own personal examples. Somehow he is able to constantly do the epic 40 days of fasting all the time. He instructs his ministry to fast for 40 days, he'll fast 40 days for any problem he encounters, and always manages to receive miraculous signs from God, thus proving how effective it is.
He writes that 40 days of fasting with no food or water, even just water, is extremely dangerous for your health, so just do the lesser "not as good" partial fasting it unless God divinely sustains you. Is the goal of the book to teach you how to get close to God, or to show you that it's pretty much impossible, but LOOK AT ME! I'M ABLE TO DO IT ALL THE TIME! SEE HOW HOLY I AM!
Ultimately, Sundar's main point is that fasting and praying is treated like a magic ritual like witchcraft that you can use to summon God. I will provide one example on page 113 in chapter 9. Sundar says:
"Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. (Ephesians 6:10). The only way for that to happen is by fasting and prayer."
Ephesians 6:10 is the opening verse to putting on the armor of God. However, the rest of the passage is never referenced. Instead he hijacks this verse and then says that fasting and prayer is the real way to do it, and implies that anything you can study about the armor of God that gives you strength, like the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, boots of peace, salvation, the scriptures...forget about that. Just fast and pray. It's pretty much the same thing!
Oh, but he's not done. Immediately following this, he writes: "If you don’t regularly [fast and pray] as a minister, I tell you this today: two things will happen to you. Firstly, you will suffer a burnout. Secondly, YOU WILL PHYSICALLY DIE BEFORE YOUR TIME. I am not frightening you, but I am telling you the truth." This is the kind of words written by someone who does not understand the gospel, about Jesus' redemptive sacrifice for our sins, and how we can easily come to the Father with Christ's blood making us righteous in His presence.
This is par for the course with all his sermons you can see on YouTube, where he tries to teach some lesson from the bible, but then supports it with fantastical miraculous examples of him talking to angels, going to heaven on a regular basis. This does not help a Christian grow at all. It just places a heavy burden on them to try to attain the same kind of supernatural experiences like Sundar, and when it doesn't happen, either delude themselves in thinking they have, or blame their own lack of faith.
Please exercise extreme discernment if you encounter Sundar's teachings. To find your own proof, go to his "Angel TV" YouTube channel, click on Videos and sort by Oldest. Click through his 50+ prophecies more than 10 years old that he's given that are sure to have already happened by now, and research their authenticity! How many times will you be able to use the excuse, "because the people repented, God changed his mind about this?"
Verify his words with the scripture. If it looks like you're supposed to accept his words as superseding the Bible, run away!
