From New York Times best-selling author Cristin Harber and Anna Bishop Barker comes an exciting collaboration…
EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT UNDERWATER Clinical researcher Rebecca Shaughnessy’s life has always been planned, ordered, controlled, logical. She isn’t a damsel and she doesn’t need a hero. Ex- Army Ranger Max Lawrence’s life is a study in balancing. War and compassion, aggression and tenderness. He isn’t looking to be anyone’s hero, even if he does appreciate the trusty steed and the mighty sword stories. But there is a monster from the past. A monster who simply takes. And this time it intends to take everything. In every good fairy tale there are dragons and monsters. The dragon in this tale may be their fiery attraction but the monster won’t remain in the past where it belongs. When the monster resurfaces, this damsel and her knight must brave the currents and fight to keep from going under.
I was born in Kentucky and raised in Florida, so I am a southerner through and through. Since I was old enough to pick up a book, I have been a voracious reader. I wrote the usual poetry and short stories in high school, and I kept the dream of writing in the back of my heart until opportunity and encouragement helped me to realize that dream. I live in Tampa with my kids, grandkids, dogs, various other livestock, and way more books than is strictly healthy. Hot Romance. Suspense. Humor & heart. Grown up stories for grown up people. This is what I write. There's also food, music, dogs, the occasional geek reference, and quite possibly an inappropriate joke. There will likely be dead bodies as well. Three random facts about me: 1. I was bitten by a shark when I was 14. 2. I have read War and Peace. (When I get to the afterlife, I am demanding that week of my life back. Sorry, Tolstoy.) 3. It is my sincere belief that any situation can be improved by eating some cheese. My live philosophy is this - guard your inner peace and read dirty kissing books.
3.5 ‘Ma is always right’ Stars Max Lawrence former Army Ranger, now a psychiatrist is an alpha alpha and has set his sights on his colleague. As a Hero he is fantastic, he has everything you want in a Hero. Loyal, good guy and a hard arse to the bone with a sweet and funny side. He also has one weakness.
He had a permanent hard-on for redheads, that couldn’t be denied. But he was slightly surprised by his immediate visceral reaction to this one.
Rebecca Shaughnessy. Genius IQ was shy in college but after what happened became guarded and socially awkward. She doesn’t want to be attracted to Max but she can’t seem to shake him especially when they are next door neighbors and there their dogs become friends. Zander & Daisy were a great addition to the story but why did you do that Ms. Barker to the wonderful Daisy? Told in from three POVs, the Hero, the heroine and the one of the stalker is way too creepy for my liking in a good way though. But each characters perspective is spot on.
Sometimes you just need a stalker fix to make you feel better and another thing is that the romance as well as the suspense and the banter well perfectly balanced.
“You are such an arrogant, horse’s ass, Neanderthal Klingon,” she hissed.
Max is also a take charge Hero. He rocked it.
“Here’s the deal, Spock. I know that for whatever reasons, you’ve lived a laced-up life. But I’m telling you now I am here to untie it.”
He is good at convincing Rebecca what he wants and he does it with style and hilariousness. “That’s not good enough, Spock. I don’t trust it. Repeat after me. I, Dr. Rebecca Spock Black Mamba Shaughnessy, do solemnly swear…” He waited. “Say it.” Rebecca gave a passing thought to his sanity but decided he looked scary enough that she was not going to disobey. “I, Dr. Rebecca Spock Black Mamba… wait, who the hell is that?” As a character when Rebecca began to thaw out I really liked her and how she let Max into her heart? Beautiful. He made her laugh, and he made her angry. He challenged her mind, and he made her want to drag him to the nearest bed. Against all odds and reason, he was it. I’m sure if you’ve all heard of the Titan Group series and well, all I can say is that they are a must read by Cristin Harber. Okay so I’ve only read one that that one that I did read is fantastic and I will go back and read the others. *sighs* as if I don’t have enough to read already. No rest for the wicked. But with the help of 11 authors she has expanded on the Titan World. I have had the pleasure of reading one of the books I do have the other one to read as well. This most certainly is an author to look out for in the romantic suspense genre. After checking this is her first novel so color me doubly impressed. I would recommend this book and I would read other books by this author once she has released something.
P.S. I love Max’s take on Mickey Mouse. “I will have you know, madam, that The Mouse is a total badass. He manages that whack pack of characters that surround him, he can understand what the actual fuck Donald Duck says, he’s faithful to his woman, and he does that wearing red pants with no fly. Total badass.”
Rebecca Shaughnessy is an in-control, professional, and serious research scientist. She comes off as cold, unfriendly, and guarded. She lacks much of a social life and only her longtime best friend, Mia Winters, gets to see her unreserved side.
Max Lawrence is the new psychologist in her department and sparks surprising reactions in her...attraction, interest, anger, and frustration. Their banter is antagonistic, flirty, and full of sexual tension. He knows how to push her buttons to drive her crazy. And she has the ability to do the same to him. But the more glimpses of what she is hiding under her Ice Princess exterior continues to draw him in. He tries to peel back her layers to uncover the the funny, passionate, warm woman he can tell she is hiding.
But there are reasons why she has been guarded and wary. Her past marked her, and now seems to be affecting her present. Max has been trying to chip away at her walls and now she has no choice but to lay her secrets bare and hope that he will help keep her safe.
I was sucked into this funny, suspenseful, and romantic read. It builds at a believable pace and is full of tension. The characters were well developed and their dynamics evolved throughout. The external factors added drama, even more tension, and suspense. It was told in multiple points of view letting us get the full story from various people.
I got a bit giddy when some Titan friends made appearances and she even gave us a little peek into the future. This novella fit right into the Titan World, but can be read as a stand-alone. I am impressed that this is Anna Bishop Barker's debut. It felt like a fully developed story and not a short novella. It pulled me in and kept me flipping pages. I did not want to put it down. I loved her subtle use of water terminology throughout tying in a theme and the title beautifully. The story was layered with a gradual build up of finding out the secrets, the growing connection and feelings of the characters, the unraveling of the plot, and tying it in with the Titan world.
But I mostly adored the characters. Max was the perfect mix of deliciously hot alpha male with charisma, humor, and heart. He could be both a dirty talker and a such sweet talker. He was cocky, confidant, and persistent, but not an a**hole. He was protective, bossy, and determined to take care of his own. He just had that "it"factor and made me smile, laugh, shiver, and swoon. I absolutely fell for him.
And Rebecca had dealt with some harsh events and realities that led to a life without a lot of affection and support. She was a survivor,..strong, resilient, intelligent, independent, and caring. She put on a cold facade, but was really just guarding her vulnerable heart. She didn't want her past to take control of her so tried to ignore it, until she couldn't. She just needed to feel safe to share. But she was not a victim who wanted to be taken care of. She was strong-willed, smart, sarcastic, and independent-minded. And together they were intense, passionate, and challenged each other making them a perfect match. I loved their dynamics, chemistry, and banter. The pop culture references were fun.
Their story was intriguing, enthralling, and full of tension, suspense, and danger. There were some difficult and emotional situations, but there were also humorous, passionate, and swoon worthy moments. I was completely invested in them and the outcome. I really enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to more from this author.
All I can say is wow, the penmanship of Anna's first book makes you feel like she's been doing this for years, The story line keeps you on your toes but leaves you wanting more. I don't like doing spoilers so I won't, The story of Max and Rebecca is story of alpha male against hard headed female falling into day to day life is fab, the integration of Mia and Colby Winters from Cristin Harbers Titan series is fantastic. This is a must read from a very very very talented lady, and I'm sure there will be more to come off Anna Bishop Barker.. an author to keep your eyes open for .
Where to begin!? You know that book that captures you right out the gate and keeps you craving for more? This.Is.That.Book! Anna has done a brilliant job in her ability to write a story with humor, suspense, a touch of geekiness and a Captain Kirk worthy grin with a HEA. I smiled throughout this book as Anna had me thinking of Titan Memos and their mischievousness. Loved the Epilogue as it brings the Titan series in full circle.
Max and Rebecca work at the same hospital and as they get to know each other via their work, the gravitational pull to each other is getting harder and harder to ignore. Max has been “standing in attention” for six months now. Rebecca can’t get him out of her mind and unwarranted emotions are surfacing but she has reasons not to engage. Their world collide as Rebecca’s past meets her here and now. Rebecca won’t be able to ignore those unwarranted emotions and Max’s primal need to protect her goes into overdrive because she is his.
The straight laced, no nonsense, highly ordered, and strictly professional way in which Dr, Rebecca Shaughnessy runs her lab. Is the stuff of legend within her field of Clinical Research. But what most don't know is that the regimented way in which she runs her lab, is also the way that Rebecca runs her life. Never daring to stray outside of a very defined set of personal, social, and practical lines. For reasons that she is determined every day to try to forget. Reasons that very demented person from her past will do anything to make her remember.
Dr. Maxwell Lawrence has always taken his calling to protect and defend extremely seriously. Both in his former service in the elite Army Ranger Corps, and now in his role a preeminent psychiatrist, specializing in the treatment of PTSD. The last thing that Max ever intended to do was to fall for the buttoned up beauty and flashing eyes of his colleague. But every cutting look, curt reply, and furtive touch the two share has him doing just that. And...though she tries to deny it. It is quite clear that Dr. Max is not the only one affected.
Lastly, there is Him. The dark remnant of evil from Rebecca's past. A man who took something from her that he had no right to. A man obsessed with a horrific deed. A man determined to revisit the fullness of that horror on a woman who has no idea he is lurking within the shadows of her reconstructed life.
Told in three very distinct, yet highly complimentary voices. Going Under is a story that is able to achieve the perfect blend of romance, suspense, and intellectual complexity that are the hallmarks of any stellar psychological thriller. What's more, said excellence is brought to bear within the very concise perimeters of a novella format.
To have a story as well written, characters as fully expressed, and a seamlessly transitioning plot that contains just one story element within the confines of such a limited format is wonderful. To achieve such with both romance and thriller components is breathtaking in this case, to say the least.
Both Max and Rebecca are characters that readers can't help wanting to know. Almost as much as they want to know each other. This fact, coupled with what their audience comes to understand about their respective pasts. When juxtaposed against what one is aware from the start is a looming threat to the prospect of their collective future. Makes this story nothing less than page turner gold. Simply put. This book is nothing less than heartwarming, passion stirring, edge of your seat, nail biting, 'happily ever after,' perfection.
Reviewer's Note: Though this book is part of a companion collection, it may be enjoyed as a stand alone.
Wow, just wow!!!!! Absolutely one of the best stories I have read.
Ms. Anna you came out the gate with a winner. I loved it and can not wait to see what happens in Titan World. The scene in the elevator was HOT!! Good Lord did that ever make you want to see what was going to happen. Rebecca's character was strong, smart and sexy. She showed us we can survive when bad things happen. Max was pretty much what every woman is looking for, smart, funny, and sexy badass hot. If there is a list, please sign me up. You put so much into this story and it shows. WELL DONE !!!! You have a wicket imagination and I can't wait to read your future works.
Rebecca keeps herself detached, calm, and collected at all times. As a child prodigy, attending college and graduate school early, she always felt out of place and even as an adult had not shed the mental shields she grew during those early years. She had a traumatic experience that further strengthened her detachment from those around her. Her best friend Mia Winter being the exception.
Max, a former Ranger, works with PTSD patients on a daily basis. Though he left the military and moved into a medical field, he has the alpha protective nature one expects to find in a Ranger. He is so swoony. He knows which buttons to push to encourage Rebecca to step out of her comfort zone but is also careful with her, particularly after learning of her past.
I loved the build up of the plot and the relationship. While the story is not a long one, the depth of feeling between the characters is well developed. Much of the action takes place over a relatively short period of time, but the relationship develops over a longer period of time, as these two have met at work and live next to each other as well.
For the length of this book, it reads more like a novel than a novella. It is a fast read, but packed with so much depth that it doesn’t feel like a typical novella. I love the Star Trek references and though I am not a fan of Trek, they are clear enough for the casual observer to catch their meaning. There was so much to love about Going Under. From the super creepy initial perspective to the action and suspense, I couldn’t put this book down.
It is full of fun tie ins to the Titan world. Mia is Rebecca's best friend and former roommate so she and Colby appear regularly. When the suspense and danger ramp up, Max brings in Colby and Titan’s help, including Parker. Anna Bishop Barker is a longtime fan of Titan, and her dedication to the series is apparent in her take on these characters and the new characters she has created for us.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
As a fan of the Titan series by Cristin Harber I was excited by the announcement of the new Titan World novels published by a selection of authors - some well known, some not, and some publishing for the first time.
This book - Going Under - one word - WOW!
You would never know that this is a debut novel for Anna Bishop Barker. Her writing and storytelling flow like that of a seasoned writer that has honed her craft and skill over years. Flawlessly written, fast paced, mixing humour, angst, tension, suspense and romance, this book has it all.
As you would expect, the story of Max and Rebecca is that of an alpha male verses the head strong stubborn female lead fighting their attraction and finally falling in love with a lot of bumps along the way. How it’s done is wonderful. There is some great characterisation - I loved Max from the get-go and saw a lot of myself in Rebecca which had me at points wanting to shake her. The story had me gripped from the beginning to the epilogue. I read this book in one sitting and I am sporting a serious book hangover this morning, but it was certainly worth it. The links to the Titan books and the cameo roles of well-known characters - including the introduction of Cristin herself - were well thought-out and at points hilariously funny. My inner geek/nerd LOVED the Star Trek and Spock references and I enjoyed how the book had pulled me under. My favourite author of all time has the ability to pull me into the story and I can picture entire scenes in my head like its playing as a movie. THIS BOOK! - This book did just that! A first for a debut novel for me I think.
With enough suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat, coupled with some beautiful touching moments and of course the perfect HEA, I give this book 5 stars. Definitely one to read. I will certainly be keeping my eye out on new releases from this very talented author. Congratulations Anna.
Dr. Rebecca Shaughnessy is a brilliant introvert who doesn't need or want a man in her life. When she meets fellow doctor Max Lawrence, she finally feels a wild attraction to the man with the gorgeous ass, but Rebecca has pulled her shields so far around her that nobody can penetrate. Max wanted Rebecca the moment he set eyes on her, and he's determined to bust down the walls she's built. When a madman has her in his sights, Max knows he'll go to the ends of the earth to protect his woman.
GOING UNDER is a novel by Ms. Barker in the Titan World series by a variety of authors writing in and around the world of the Titan series by Cristin Harber. This was a terrific story that had a little something for everyone. There was drama, intrigue, suspense, danger, sex, love and romance. Rebecca was a prodigy who was young and naïve in college. Raped by a stalker, Rebeca has lived since then totally insular, not letting anyone close. Max sees the fiery woman underneath, exhibiting patience, romance and a very VERY nice ass. His former Army Ranger days, along with his current PTSD work, are both instrumental to helping Rebecca heal. They had a tenuous connection that really built into something deep and meaningful between the two of them. I'd love to read more by Ms. Barker if this is any indication of her other work (except for the dog scene - I'd prefer no more of that, ever!!!).
I've been anticipating this book. Once I finally got my hands on it, I was a little excited. Going Under does not disappoint, in the slightest. Anna Bishop Barker is an excellent storyteller, anyone that is in Cristin Harber's Team Titan Facebook group will be well versed on that in small doses, well Anna has taken that to the next level. I knew she was good, but I wasn't prepared for how good. I read this book in two sittings (only because I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer), it is well thought out, funny - I burst into laughter several times, it's emotional and I'll warn you; you're probably going to cry, I did...more than once. Max and Becca have lots to deal with but it makes their relationship oh so sweet..and perfect. If like me, you're a geek at heart, you're going to love some of the things said and references. Fans of the Titan group will not be disappointed with some of the interactions in the book. (That's all I'll say about that ). Did I mention I'm in love with Max? Definitely a solid 5 stars and I'm looking forward to reading much more from Ms Barker.
I can't say enough good things about this book. Anna has captured the excitement, heat and intrigue of the Titan books and brought it to her characters, Max and Becca. The Titan Series has die hard fans that demand a certain edge and adventure to their romance novels and Anna delivers on every level. This novel not only rings true to the Titan World for her characters, but also for Cristin Harber's Titan Group characters, which Anna weaves into her story seamlessly. Do yourself a favor and just one click. Trust me. You will see. :)
I am not good with writing reviews, so I don't usually leave reviews. I made a goal for this year that I would write a review for every book I read that touched me. While the characters in this book didn't grab my attention from the first page, they tugged at my heart as I got to know them and thier story. I fell in love with Max and Rebecca and enjoyed how their relationship formed. I highly recommend that you read this book.
Having known Ms. Barker for the past few tears through our Team Titan Facebook group, and read some of her fan fiction, i knew she could write a fantastic book. Going Under doesn't disappoint, it's all that and more plus I'm sure there will be more in the future based on having just read this book, I'm very proud of you Anna.
Max Lawrence has just started a new job at the VA hospital when he meets his colleague, Rebecca who gives him a frosty reception which earns her the nickname, Spock and Vulcan princess. When he finds out they are also neighbors, he waits six months before deciding to make his move. But there is a sinister stalker from her past who is waiting to attack and is determined to claim Becca as his. However, Max having made his moves finally will protect her with his life if necessary making sure it never happens. Will they be able to protect each other before the man from her past steals her from Max?
Rebecca Shaunghnessy loves her job working with veterans and with the addition of Dr. Max Lawrence her fantasies are making her hormones go into overdrive. But as a child wunderkind, she had everything intellectually growing up just not dealing with hot sexy co workers. But when things are escalated by the dark person from her past she turns to Max to protect her. Will Max and Becca finally give into the desires and will they be able to take down the stalker before he takes one of their lives? It will take all the skills of a former Army Ranger, Mia and Colby Winters and Titan Group to take down the man who is determined to claim Becca as his own but not if Max has anything to say about it.
I loved the description of Mickey Mouse and the love that blooms between to strong people who are determined to make a life together (including their two dogs, Zander and Daisy) I look forward to reading the next books by Anna Bishop Barker.
First the good.....loved this story, pulled me in and kept me spellbound, just couldn't stop reading it. Max, just may be my new book boyfriend and I just fell in love with Rebecca. It had it all, tears, laughter and love.
Now the bad..... didn't want the story to end....seriously there was nothing bad about this book....for a first time author it was outstanding. I connected with all the characters and can't wait to see more from you Anna Bishop Parker!!!! Kudos to you
This was a lovely short read. The story covered a lot of bases including humour, tension, dark secrets, a hidden demon, a sexy intelligent alpha male and a defensive, witty, insecure female who fought to hold her own. Don't be fooled though, she was vulnerable but not weak, never that. This story ticked so many boxes that I'm looking at other titles right after this!! I do love and highly recommend the Titan series!!!
I love the Titan Series and the Titan world books are great. Anna Barker Bishop's addition grabbed you from the start. It had all the things you look for in this series - romance, suspense, and humor. Max's sarcasm and determination to get past Rebecca's walls made him a very likeable character. His compassionate, caring and protective approach to her trauma history made him an outstanding character. Rebecca was courageous and the perfect match for Max. I cannot wait for her next book
Yes! So good! I couldn't put his book down.. I feel asleep listening to it. Woke up in the middle of the night and started listening to it again, feel asleep, and woke up and listened to the test till the end. Two or three happy tears mighta escaped as well. I love titan world!
I cannot believe this is the author's first book. It is so well written. I loved the pace of the book, fast , hot , sexy and full of suspense. I have to be honest it took a while for me to warm to Max, he seemed a bit arrogant and cocky. Like Rebecca I was wrong, he is a strong and loving alpha male. I loved the inclusion of Miami and Colby Winters from Cristin Harbers Titan books. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Rebecca is tight and in control... often coming across as frigid. But there is a past, a reason why she acts the way she does.
Max comes in as the new PTSD psychologist and is instantly attracted to Rebecca. He wants to slowly take down her walls. There were nicknames that Max had for Rebecca that had me in stitches.
But the past that is supposed to be well behind Rebecca has resurfaced and taken to a new level, leaving Rebecca no choice but to open up and trust in Max.
Young trauma ponce again compromises a young girls future. Persistent Max helps her through it. But how does a smart woman leave the safety of a house with a madman out there. What smart man leaves his women unprotected with a madman out there?
Anna, Going Under was Fabulous. I couldn't put it down, you make characters come alive in our minds. Max is a real catch and Zander is my kind of dog. I love the Vulcan comments throughout. My only complaint is that you made me CRY and you know what about. You Rock Mate. LYH Mama Bear. ❤

Going Under sucked me in and stole my breath in the best way! I am genuinely astonished this is this author's freshman effort.
Dr. Max Lawrence is a former Army Ranger and current military physchologist. He's wicked smart, ridiculously attractive, fun, flirty and well gosh darn it, people (especially women) like him. Usually. Until Rebecca. He's wildly attracted to her but she doesn't give him the time of day.
Rebecca Shaunessy is a brilliant research scientist. She's dedicated her life to her work and frankly, hides behind it a bit. She's all business, all the time. Her frosty, no-nonsense exterior, which earns her the nickname "Spock", can be a little off-putting to those that don't look deep enough to understand her. There are only a handful of people she trusts to get that close, her beloved dog Daisy and former college roommate Mia. No, she treasures her lab and things that makes sense. Max Lawrence does not make sense! She is wholly unprepared for her reaction to him and goes to great lengths to hide it, even from herself.
Rebecca, Mia and Max are working together on a project to assist veterans with Post Traumatic Stress. Little does Max know her coldness belies true trauma of her own. When she shows him her softness and shares her secrets, he'll do whatever it takes to save her from going under.
This book was spectacular. I loved every minute of it, even the creepy parts. I adored Max. He's the good old fashioned, fierce protector, knight in shining armor type, mixed with heaps of naughty. His dirty talk was super hot! Dang Doc!
I also really loved Rebecca. Like a turtle, she's retreated into her shell a bit to protect her soft underbelly but she's no one's fool. She put the doc all kinds of off kilter and it was fun. And their sexy times were delicious!!! The inclusion of the Titan characters was a fantastic tie-in to the story. The author also added super fun, nerdy pop culture references that made me giggle!
All in all, I'm incredibly impressed with Ms. Barker's debut novel and can't wait to see more! Well done!
This book was a total delight and, for a first-time author, an outstanding success! The story captured my interest immediately and simply didn't let go. Loved the main characters, supporting characters, the suspense and humor kept me turning the pages and I just recently decided to forgive the author for the major hiccup that had me in tears of disbelief and sadness. The story is just too good not to. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone interested reading an excellent, suspenseful love story!
There's something lurking in the shadows and it's going to take the Titan's Team to help Max solve this mystery. But, can Max win over Rebecca's heart too?
Anna Bishop Barker does an amazing job of pulling the Titan World into this story.
I love the chemistry between Max and Rebecca. Rebecca's strong will and how she conquers her demons.
I look forward to many more words from this author in the future.
Whew! Going Under, the debut novel by Anna Bishop Barker fully captured my attention from the first page and kept me hooked to the end! I didn’t want to set it down once I got started.
What you get when you crack the (gorgeous) cover is a pool size wealth of emotion - each splash and ripple including a taste of sweet, frustrating, creepy, adorable, helpless, hopeful, healing, and love. Max is a swoon-worthy hero who definitely loves a challenge and has a knight-in-shining-armor heart of gold. Becca protected herself with some pretty intense walls, giving off an air of unapproachability, but our knight wasn’t deterred and we got to experience her spirit bloom under his attention, showing us the smart, strong, vulnerable, and love-worthy woman she truly is.
Because it’s a Titan World book, you also get a glimpse of some of my most favorite Titan characters. Their true-to-character appearances are just the icing on the cake! I giggled often seeing how they made their presence known.
There’s steamy moments, creepy moments, swoony moments, and intriguing moments all wrapped up together in one hot package. You don’t want to miss this story!
Going Under completely blew me away. You would never guess that this a debut novel for new author Anna Bishop Barker. Barker gives us some amazing characters. Real and intelligent characters who face the day-to-day issues of life as well as some major hurdles. The dialogue between the characters is witty and fun, and I really liked Becca and Max. On top of the new characters, some of Cristin Harber's characters from the Titan Series make an appearance. And I always love getting to see my favorites through new eyes. But, if you haven't read any of the Titan Series, no worries, Going Under stands alone just fine. Combined with the great characters, there is enough romance and suspense going on to keep the pages turning, and the book in my hand. I read the whole novella in one sitting, either giggling or tearing up the entire time... *ARC Review*
