It’s been twelve years since the chosen made their presence known across the globe. They are the elite of our race. A community gifted with supernatural abilities . . . and no one outside of it, to hold them accountable. Racism, distrust, and fear now run rampant in the hearts of humans, resulting in hate crimes and worse. Rumors of war are whispered in both factions, while talk of peace has become a thing of the past. A distant dream. Or delusion. In the midst of this political and social unrest, eighteen-year-old Kathryn Stokely suddenly finds herself thrust into a life-threatening situation that promises to turn her world upside down. Secrets and lies about her past are unearthed, forcing her to face a truth that will irrevocably affect her future . . . and who she spends it with. Now, choices must be made. Loyalties decided. Betrayal seems unavoidable. Because the line has been drawn, and there’s no guarantee which side will be left standing. Only one thing is certain. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Sara Hanson and Brandy Bruce are sisters with a fondness for fiction, storytelling, and sips of fortifying coffee in between. They live in the cozy state of Colorado, nestled against a beautifully inspiring backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.
One of my favorite books I’ve read. No sign of the next two books in the trilogy but I’m holding out hope that one day there will be. I’ve re-read it twice!
I was given a copy of Chosen in exchange for my honest review.
Magic, friendship, the start of a war... Chosen is a brilliant first instalment in the trilogy by Sara Hanson. It's a compelling, fast-paced tale that seamlessly blends love and adventure, and will leave you wanting more!
Chosen can be described as a Harry Potter fanfic, which was nostalgic and cute, with love interests that unfortunately weren't my cup of tea, but would definitely suit others. The story was fun and intriguing, though I felt it needed more explanation in some places, and less in others, but it set a solid groundwork for the next two books. Purple prose generally isn't to my liking--though the descriptions in Chosen were lovely--but I know many people enjoy that writing style, so pick it up and give it a read!
First of all I want to thank Sara for sending me this book to review. Guys she is the sweetest, kindest soul!
The first thing you need to know is that the world is probably the greatest aspect of this book. This is set in an alternate universe to ours, where the Chosen, a race of gifted elementalists (among other things) have come out of hiding and are attempting to coexist publicly instead of hiding their existence. I absolutely loved the idea that the Chosen are run by the Council with the four Bearers as their world's guardians. The connection between the Bearers is fascinating to me!
But I digress. Anyway, the protagonist, Kate goes to a school for Chosen at a time when war is brewing. She develops some great friendships and definitely a love interest. While I found the world really intriguing, the sequence of events and relationships felt a little bit rushed to me. This is a fast-paced book I probably would've enjoyed as a teenager. Now though, I couldn't help but roll my eyes and think, "Dude what the heck are you doing?" at some of the characters. If I were their friends, I would shake them!
That said, this boo laid out some great groundwork for the books to come. The ending had me SUPER curious as to what will happen next, if only to see how the relationships develop between a certain four characters now.
Do you love Harry Potter? Magic? Good vs. Evil? Then this is the book for you. The book written by Sara Hanson and Brandy Bruce will appeal to young adults and adults alike that are fans of fantasy novels. They do a great job introducing the reader to the world of "the Chosen" and laying a foundation to connect the reader to more than just the main character, Kate which I really enjoy. The authors also do a great job wordsmithing and bringing each chapter alive, I could easily envision what was going on and felt like I was standing off to the side watching the story unfold. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Let me just start by saying that I absolutely loved this book! Sara is a brilliant writer who just has a way with words. She did an amazing job with the world building. I felt like it was so relatable, so contemporary. I’ve read a few reviews that compared Chosen to J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, but I felt it reminded me more of a mixture of Avatar: The Last Airbender (which I love!) and X-Men. To me, the characters are well written and are very relatable. I don’t care at all for the romance genre, but I found the budding romances in this book to be realistic. This book had all the elements that make it a great read for me personally and I can’t wait for the next book in this trilogy.
If the following words are appealing, this book may be for you: teenage, angst, melodrama, high school, Hogwarts, witch, hunk, dreamy, catty. Also, this book is great if you like weak female protagonists who, in the face of danger, are more likely to swoon because a good looking guy looked at them than to take action. The fictional premise is excessively derivative. The plot is vague. The characters are caricatures. The action sequences are confusing.
I only made it through 27% of the book. I struggled not to quit sooner. Its not the worst drivel I've read on Kindle Unlimited, but it isn't good, and it certainly wasn't for me.
I was a little nervous when this book was recommended to me because I thought it would be boring or too much in the teen genre. I loved the cover though and I'm not one to shy away so I figured why not? I was very pleased with this book and enjoyed it so much. I finished it in a day. I loved the characters and can't wait to get to know them more. I can't wait for the next book. Honestly there was a lot to this book that it was perfect for me. I don't want to say too much to ruin it but honestly I was very happy with it.
4.5 stars! I loved the idea of this book! A school for people who can wield the elements! It reminded me a little of Avatar The Last Airbender mixed with Harry Potter which is one of my favorite shows and obviously my favorite books! I really liked the friendship between all of the characters and I felt they were all very relatable. That epilogue kind of confirmed some of my suspicions and I absolutely cannot wait until the second book!
So I just finished the book! And let me fist say Sara is one of the niceest, kindest human beings on this planet!!! And as promised almost a year later (sorry for the delay) here I am reviewing the book. I love books that take me off into another world, I mean isn’t that the purpose after all? And this book does a great job of mixing our human human world with the world of humans with magical entities. The only reason I gave this a 4 and not a 5 star rating is I feel as though parts of the story were cut short. Don’t let that detour you though it is a beautifully written story with magic and young love. And while I am use to having heroins with strong personality and will, this heroin is more real, relatable, and down to earth (pun mostly intented!) I found her “thoughts” refreshing, her demeanor somewhat like myself and that is quite frankly a nice change. Please friends if you like fantasy books give this a shot!! I cannot wait for the next book to find out what happens next.
