Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force, which shields the home planet from too much knowledge of the situation. What's known to everybody is that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

The Ghost Brigades — At first, Jared is a perfect soldier, but as another man's memories slowly surface, Jared begins to intuit the reasons for their betrayal. Time is running The alliance is preparing its offensive, and some of them plan worse things than humanity's mere military defeat.

The Last Colony — Retired from his fighting days, John Perry and his wife, Jane, are pulled back into the political arena, and into the thick of interstellar politics, betrayal, and war.

Zoe’s Tale — Zoe Boutin A colonist stranded on a deadly pioneer world. Holy icon to a race of aliens. A player (and a pawn) in an interstellar chess match to save humanity, or to see it fall. Witness to history. Friend. Daughter. Human. Seventeen years old.

The Human Division — The CU's secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance—an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they've invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

The End of All Things — CDF Lieutenant Harry Wilson and the Colonial Union diplomats he works with race against the clock to discover who is behind attacks on the Union and on alien races, to seek peace with a suspicious, angry Earth, and keep humanity's union intact...or else risk oblivion, and extinction—and the end of all things.

First book was awesome. The ones after were mostly good reads but not even close to the level of first one. All were not actually novels but more like collection of short stories and Zoe's tale was just a worse version of the previous book probably published to milk the success of the series.

Overall a very enjoyable series. It's entertaining first and formost, in addition to the thought that's gone into the background.
Among current science fiction authors, ‘accessible’ is a common descriptor applied to John Scalzi’s writing. ‘Accessible’ is not ‘simplistic’. Scalzi’s Old Man’s War depicts a hostile universe that almost seems to require a permanent war. It deals with questions of responsibility and acknowledges service, bravery and competence as virtues. However, cracks in that vision show up pretty quickly. For an ostensibly military SF romp it’s pretty scathing about militarism. A suspicious eye is cast up the chain of command, questioning how much of what’s sliding down it you should swallow. In terms of style, descriptive passages are kept to a minum when it comes to objects and alien creatures, with a ‘show don’t tell’ approach to presenting different perspecitives, human and otherwise. Among other compliments I could give, I have to congratulate Scalzi on his writing of dog characters which – as the main variety of alien mind I have direct experience with – ring true.
Well worth your time.

Overall *** 1/2

Old Man's War *****
The Ghost Brigades *****
The Last Colony ****
Zoe's Tale *
The Human Division ****
The End of All Things ***

** SOME SPOILERS**
Zoe's Tale really brought down the total score. It read like it was written by a teenage girl, and was nothing like the voice in the other books. I paused for a great long while because I had a hard time getting through that particular book, but I managed and I'm happy it's done. I will never read that one ever again, but I'll definitely be rereading the others.

The End of All Things had points of view from a soldier who deserted at the end of her story, and I just didn't enjoy her point of view too much. I was also wondering about the two women who survived...the deserter and the one who stayed.

I am a big fan of this series, but by the time I reached The Human Division, I was wondering why they didn't just make special forces soldiers from the dead? They would have an unlimited number of soldiers who know nothing but fighting. Why wasn't that a solution? It's not like the Colonial Defense Forces government had any qualms with some questionable choices. it would have been an interesting side as to why that wasn't an option. Obviously a bunch of child minds in dangerous bodies who look down on the slow-speakers would have caused some chaos, but I don't know. It's a story I would've liked explored, or some reasoning behind it.

SCALZI'S SPECTACULAR SERIES ~ 9.5/10

This series is defined by an epic plot, imaginative world-building and interspecies political intrigue. It examines what it means to be human and all the characters (even the aliens) have just that: humanity, deep as the lore of this book. The protagonist: John Perry is a great character and I love the complexity with how the human Colonial Union interacts with alien factions. Highly recommend. I won't write much more because I read this a while ago. Great audiobook reading also.

"Old Man's War" was okay. It held my attention, but had too many "new" discoveries by our hero for me to accept as probable. Generally, I am able to suspend disbelief, but for some reason, I just wasn't able to in this case. It was fine, but not excellent. 3 stars.

"Ghost Brigades" was better. I rather liked the adult Ender type character development. As well as the growth of the main character. 3 stars.

All in all, not as good as "Redshirts"

Excellent value for money even if not quite in the reading order as suggested here on goodreads. But with a working TOC no problem.

Make a small break before Zoes tale, otherwise it gets a bit pointless and boring as Zoes switches the series from action-focussed to a kind-of YA-grownup story. This also switches the overall tone from an action driven story to more in-depth storytelling, politics and development, to enjoy this you should make a small break inbetween and read something else.

A great and varied read. Be prepared to travel many perspectives!

This was a recommended read and it did not disappoint. I have been a sci-fi reader for decades and thus compares favorably to some of my favorites, including person Scott Card, Richard K Morgan, Neal Stephenson and the like! Highly recommended!

Taken as a whole, the six books of the Old Man's War series represents a great read. Some of the books are better than others and there are definite highlights and lowlights, but the characters and their personalities and motivations are consistent from one to the next, and that's what kept me reading.

One of the few books I've read recently where I like most of the characters, including some of the villains! It kind of reads like Guardians of The Galaxy at times, injecting humor into life-or-death situations. As I was reading the words it was very easy to visualize the scenes as if I was watching a television show or movie. I can see this being adapted for screen some day.

The first part of the series was very good, but when it switched to the second (same events from another character's perspective) I lost interest in the series. Definitely worth the read though. I just wouldn't read the whole series back-to-back or you might get burned out like I did.

an excellent compilation

Old Man’s War, the series by John Scalzi, is an excellent read. Sci-fi the way I prefer it. It’s personable AND technical. I encourage sci-if readers to indulge here.

I’m only counting this as a separate book read because Goodreads will not allow me to document the novella at the end as a read ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so here we are.

The Last Colony is the third installment of the Old Man’s War series. There are better writers than I who can give you a detailed synopsis. I just want to add that this builds on the story and is a compelling read. I highly recommend this series for any space opera fan.
