Vostok Station
Francis Hamlin accepts an invitation to work at a research station in the most remote and inaccessible place in the world—Vostok Station, Antarctica. This adventure is supposed to give him an opportunity to participate in discovering something truly unique with far reaching implications to positively impact the entire outside world. But what they do discover there is something truly horrific. When people begin to die, the terrifying truth of their situation sets in. They are trapped with no way to escape. All flights are impossible during the brutal winter. No one gets in; no one gets out. As the already small group begins to dwindle, Hamlin realizes that all the research is for naught if they cannot figure out a way to endure this long, dark winter where death is lurking around every corner. Can they overcome the persistent, unexpected doom that stalks them all at Vostok Station?

I chose VOSTOK STATION because it promised to slot into one of my favorite Horror subgenres, Frozen Horror, and because I cannot resist anything set in Antarctica [or in the Arctic]. As it turned out, the Freeze is non-stop, the Horror is present and constant. But in contrast to John W. Campbell's classic Science Fiction novella "Who Goes There?" (filmed by John Campbell as THE THING), the Horror in VOSTOK STATION is primarily Biological [although the author delivers very human, living, monstrosities, towards the end, providing terrifying spine-chilling moments...because sometimes, Humanity is the most terrifying of all experiences].
Biology gone radically wrong (because of course scientists must always persevere to the end) and in this case, governmental intervention, inevitably leads to unstoppable destruction. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read it prior to the 2019-20 onset of Coronavirus, because by January 2023 inescapable Plague and governmental machinations just seem...all too real.
I granted VOSTOK STATION 4 Stars for plotting, wonderful setting, and character (although by the conclusion Professor Feckless Hero's antics and humour were wearing thin). If I could, I would deduct .5 Star for lack of sufficient proofreading [including using nouns for verbs), so ideally this would be 3.5.

My main issue with this was the writing, the story could've been a lot creepier but the actual action felt rushed, when the characters speak it never flows naturally and it makes it hard to really get immersed in the story, considering i DNF my last book, i really didn't want to do that with this but it was very hard to finish unfortunately

So, I was just looking for a distraction from our sweltering heatwave with this book. Anything set in Antarctica is always appealing to me but this one was just sophomoric or perhaps I'm just too old. I was prepared for Russian zombies but the Austin Powers level of sexual humor from the single American scientist just got ridiculous. I wish the predictably boorish, rogue special-ops guy had made an appearance earlier because I would have just thrown in the towel.

A GRAND TALE OF TERROR IN THE COLD IT IS...

A Good, Sometimes Creepy Horror Story
This book fits into a SciFi category because of the science going on at The South Pole, but it also can just adequately be described as a Thriller or Horror Story. There’s not constant action, there’s definitely not constant science, and some parts of the book definitely seem utterly implausible — but, hey, who am I to argue with The Author’s writing strategies?
The story begins with a kind of a slow, boring start. But, I’m willing to believe this was by design, so that The Author could use a back-door approach to work into his intended plot … which THEN allows the book to start to get interesting … and the middle 3/4 of it was much more exciting. We won’t mention all of the sexual activity segments included by The Author, and will simply allow The Reader to decide if they were integral to the rest of the tale or not.
This book’s plot conjures up a lot of the original (1951) movie entitled ‘The Thing’ (based upon the 1938 John Carpenter novella “Who Goes There?”); the movie’s 1982 remake was not as good, so I’ll conveniently ignore it. All of these stories take place under similar circumstances in Antarctica, but otherwise are very different plots — so, don’t get biased by this observation of mine. The movie was good and exciting, and so was this book. I recommend you go out and read “Vostok Station” ASAP, and if your can find ‘The Thing’ or “Who Goes There?” — definitely watch and read and enjoy them all!

Review of this book.
A very good book. I read it in two days. A tornado watch was in effect for one of those days. Very large hail hitting the roof did not stop me from finishing the book. That is how much I enjoyed the book! The author even gave insight into what our life style must seem like to a person from a Russian
military life. The book had lots of twists and turns in it. The end of the book was really intense. You could not tell the good guys from the bad guys. This book never slowed down.

Another story about an ice covered land
I seem to be in an arctic mood lately. This is one of the better reads. It starts slow and then it ends (well I don't want to give it away). The writing is excellent and dusted with enough humor to keep you from going all creepy. I loved the characters and they seemed so appropriate to their activities. I caution you readers to wait until the Covid19 virus has run its course so it can dampen any conspiracy theories you may draw.

Awful
I don't understand how this got so many good reviews. The writing is dreadful, clunky and childish, with spelling mistakes. The hero is an a-hole. The plot is totally unoriginal. And preposterous. No sterile lab, no safety suits, it sounded like my sixth form science lab, not somewhere investigating potentially dangerous samples. I repeat, awful

Fair read
The story was okay overall but the "romantic" part of the story was distracting and odd. Because of the silly flirtations it was hard to take the rest of the story seriously. I did finish it but I skipped a bunch of the silly sex scenes.

I LOVED this book.
The humor and the horror together made it perfect.
The dialogue was very well done and the characters were developed terrifically.
I was hoping at the end there was a next book!

Fascinating story
I really enjoyed this book. The characters and storyline were fascinating. A mix of action, drama and a touch of humor. Highly recommend this book.

Barely average...
Shame nobody proof-read it. Shame no editorial choices were made. Shame about the pre-pubescent sexual banter/scenes. Might have been about average after all that.

Wonderful story.
Sad to see characters die that you read about.

This is an excellent tale of heroics and friendship with a twist at the end that was great.
