DinoMechs: Battle Force Jurassic: Dinosaurs & Space Marines

Rate this book
My name is Michael Claymore, former convicted felon and active duty space marine.

When the histories are studied by those happy few who inherit the galaxy we have left them with, my hope is that they look favorably, perhaps even with a bit of mirth, upon we poor souls who fought side by side with the mighty dinosaurs of Battle Force Jurassic.

The Invaders emerged from somewhere beyond the Milky Way and started conquering everything in sight. They brought with them massive kaiju monsters that made every Godzilla movie pale in comparison. These things would smash through our cities, gobbling up every human being, nuclear plant, or electrical tower they could find. In their wake came legions of alien infantry outfitted with body armor and ray guns, who stalked the ruins looking for survivors.

It was all our modern military could to just to hold them back, and even that cost us dearly. Humanity was in the deep dark stank of it, and some desperate scientists came up with a crazy idea. We needed not only a way to fight back effectively, but a symbol of power to rally around.

When a Tyrannosaurus Rex joins your team, especially one armed with missile launchers and mini-guns, you know it's business time.

Earth colonised the stars, never expecting to find other intelligent life. But that life found the colonies. How do you fight superior giant lizard-like Invaders? With dinosaurs, of course!

This is a fun, fighting against hopeless odds military space story, like so many others but with that extra Jurassic ingredient. The battles are seen through the eyes of Rick Claywell, released from a long prison sentence to sign up with the military for five years, should be live that long. We follow the new troops' brief induction period then the battlefields themselves and Rick's progress "from convict to captain". Yes, a familiar story but great fun and with some nice little additional touches along the way.

Made extra enjoyable by the excellent narration of J.Scott Bennett, whose very pleasant on the ear voice reads impeccably as well as giving distinctive character to all of the protagonists, this is not a book to get over excited about but does provide a very pleasurable few house of listening. My thanks to the rights holder who gifted me a copy of Dino Mechanical, via Audiobook Boom. Did I mention - Good fun!

I went into this with zero expectations. I don't know if I would normally have looked at this, except I received this free in exchange for a review. I am glad to say that I honestly really enjoyed this! J. Scott Bennett is an awesome narrator. He differentiates characters and action in a way that is exactly how I want the book to be read. It meshes well with my mind.

The book starts marginally slow, but builds quickly. I found myself curious, involved, and then riveted to the content. Seriously, I figured dinosaurs in combat was going to be ridiculous and cheap. Instead, I found it, to my thinking, much more like Pacific Rim on a galactic level, but with Dinosaurs armed for battle rather than giant robots. Our Kaiju vs. the aliens. Awesome! The book's action is never in a space battle. This is futuristic ground combat staged on various worlds. There are some alien tactics and thinking, and a whole lot of good, sound, Earth logic from our Raptor soldiers.

I tend to love military fiction, especially military Sci-Fi, and that's where this falls. I'm thrilled i got the opportunity to listen and I am hoping for a series! I'd gladly buy into the next books. I recommend!

This is a dystopic, sci-fi story of battling alien invaders with convicted felons and dinosaurs. Set in a future when most of the populous has left Earth to live in better conditions on various terraformed planets, we first meet our protagonist as he kills someone while robbing a bank in an impoverished area of Earth. Somewhat of an antihero, Clay gets recruited from "jail" to be part of a disposable military group, composed of felons. They are to provide ground support for the newly bred and trained DinoMechs as the battle the alien invaders. With hints of Jurassic Park in its means of recreating dinosaurs, this story entertains us with gory battles, clashing monsters, jungle adventures and cult female assassins. Scott Bennett did an excellent job of the narration in the audiobook, he drew you along into the story, giving the characters personality and imparting emotion and tension in all the right spots. He also did a great job of the different accents too. I'm not sure if I would have like this story if I had just read the book as I found the characters somewhat one dimensional, but the narration really brought the story to life. It is an easy listening, quick, entertaining story - 5 stars on the narration but 3 stars for the story. I received the audiobook at no cost and under no obligation to review

As earth's colonies are attacked, it is left to convicts forced into service and genetically created prehistoric dinosaurs, to save the day. Good book following Clay, as he fights to stay alive and earn his freedom with a clean record.

When I was a wide-eyed kid there was a line of toys (and matching TVmercials) that just wowed the imagination. It was about two warring races from the future who were transported back through time and made use of dinosaurs as their war steeds. They were the DinoRiders! Even under ten years old, I had learned all there was to know about which species each of the warriors rode, their strengths and habits and the different methods of control. Here was a rich and compelling theme, waiting to be explored in greater depth by an older audience.

When I saw the audiobook of Isaac Stone's DinoMechs: Battle Force Jurassic on offer, I immediately began looking forward to what I imagined would be 6 hours of dinosaur-rich battle intensity. What would it be like harnessing dinosaurs for military purposes? Would carnivorous dinosaurs fight better than herbivores? I had questions I wanted answered. But this is where the story really failed to impress. Throughout the whole story we really only learn *anything* about one of the DinoMechs: Terry the Tyrannosaurus Rex. There is some elaboration on his feeding habits, dinosaur transportation logistics, predatory instincts - not incredible detail, but something. However, nowhere else do we learn even the species of other DinoMechs, let alone what it might be like riding and controlling them. In similar fashion the 'kaiju' were described in the vaguest of terms, often being referred to as 'dinosaurs' themselves. Here was a lost opportunity to engage the audience in what should have been the coolest element of the story. I really think to achieve its purpose, DinoMechs had ought to have gone much, much more into the idea of... DinoMechs.

The author Isaac Stone did not seem to control tension very effectively in the storytelling. I did not feel a real sense that characters needed to work hard to overcome challenges. Which is a shame, because the story is about aliens stomping cities and threatening to push humans to the brink of extinction - lots of tension! All in all I was pretty unsurprised by the outcome of the episodes in the story and was left wondering 'is that all?'.

J. Scott Bennett has done a convincing an entertaining job with the narration performance. His rendering of Michael Claymore helped to fill out the character and his rags-to-riches story. I tend to really enjoy the hard-boiled first-person narrative style and the performance here reminded me of what I liked about Glen Cook's Black Company novels.

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

If you like books with lots of battles this is the book for you. Earth and all its colonized planets are being attached. This has been done many times. This tale has a bit of twist. Through science and old DNA, dinosaur are reborn to help fight this battle along with criminal recruits. It is a very fast paced tale, with a bunch of interesting characters. I will be checking other titles from this author.
