18 years after the “Blistering Flu” decimated humanity and gave rise to the world of fear and sorrow that is now owned by the dead, the remnants of humanity continue to fight for their right to live.
Regrettably, nothing has changed in the mentality of man. Very quickly people had separated into factions that declared war on each other. These petty wars did us no good. They detached us from what was rising in the wastelands...
Will humanity be able to survive what is coming or will we continue to be assistants to our own destruction?
Veronica Smith is an upcoming author and I had the pleasure of getting to see her scope of writing in this book. There will be no spoilers but it should be said, this book is meant to accompany (from my understanding) a game. I found the story intriguing. I always love to know what each writer's "origin" for their zombies are when they put out a story. In this case, it was a "Blistering Flu" (reminding me of The Black Plague).
Veronica's imagination is vast and never ceases to amaze me, even when writing for a plot already laid out. In my opinion, this story made me more eager to see if the game lives up to it, rather than the other way around!
I've read Veronica's work in several anthologies, and it is evident she is developing and growing her voice by leaps and bounds. I'll continue reading her work and I recommend this book, as well as her anthologies, to everyone. You will love the view from behind her eyes.

This could have a great book, but I would give it 3-1/2 stars. My main complaint with the book is the number of characters that are thrown at you in rapid succession without having the chance to really get to know them. Add in the fact that the action jumps around from time period to time period and from character to character and it is really hard to keep track!
Also, it seemed like the author took every possible thing that might happen in a Zompoc and put it into this one book. You have "regular" zombies, mutant zombies, zombie animals, mutant zombie animals, bad "government" types, cannibals, kids being used as breeders and soldiers and some others that I am probably forgetting.
Then, we have a huge pit monster that rears its ugly tentacles....I don't know how anybody could survive all of these things, but some manage to do it.
There were some very heartbreaking moments that brought me to tears and some good parts to the book, but it was just too much, too fast for a really good read. And, zombie snakes? That is definitely going to haunt my nightmares!
Salvation is a post-zombie apocalypse/dystopian story that is derived from some game. I don't know anything about games but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book. I loved the concept of this story and it had some unique features. There was more than just your average human zombie to worry about here. I was able to connect with a few of the characters which is always a plus but beware the author wields a deadly pen! There were times when the flow was easy and I was drawn in. Other times I had to re-read to figure out who was speaking and the flow was off, the dialogue a bit stilted. There were also some editorial mistakes. But for the most part it was a good read.
This story has really great characters, an exciting story line and some of the scariest zombies I've found. I look forward to the next book in this series.
I have been called upon to read Salvation, as I was intrigued to read something about zombies. Unfortunately, I could not finish this. Why? Well it is just not my forte as it reminded me too much of The Walking Dead. Yes, I do not like the Walking Dead- it has way too much drama and not enough gore to be zombies. That being said, it does not take away from what I have read from Salvation. The story from what Veronica Smith has given to the readers in the zombie follower community, is based on the game Survive – an apocalyptic horror game created by Helheim Games Studio LLC.
It all starts on April 24th, 2016- this was the day to end all days. Patient zero, Jonathan Hamilton, was indentified with the virus known as the HHF- short for the Hamilton Hemorrhagic Fever- more commonly known the Blistering Fever by people and reporters alike. With the world at the end of days, the civilians have made crime skyrocket and crash the rest of the world from returning into its normal status. By May 29th, General Kevin Fowler will be known as the first true zombie who gave birth to the progress of the end of the world- as the virus continued to attach itself to any living thing it could find a host in, including wildlife; yes, the animal kingdom is targeted for infection, which is so unique and creative it kept me in for a few more chapters. Salvation is filled with surprises and keeps you cringing your face for more.
You will find that not only is this world created by Helheim Games Studio disturbing and creative- with the writing styles so deeply detailed by Veronica Smith, it will make any Walking Dead fans happy to the fullest- Salvation not only brings zombies, but it also brings in the Neo-US which has taken over the government at its weakest points in 2022. By 2027, The Neo- US realized they could no longer fight the growing zombie population and they formed a special detachment called the Z.E.D (Zombie Eradication Detachment). The Z.E.D will become powerful, killing hordes of zombies and having the ability to strike fear into the very people they were supposed to be protecting. The Raiders will be compared to the Indian Warriors that defend their lands, with tensions growing between them as the years progressed. You will learn between the infected, Z.E.D wanting to rule the world, and the Raiders only wanting to survive, that they will be faced with challenges along the way between cannibals, mutant zombies, and who knows what else. Join this journey that Veronica Smith has provided for the fans of the zombie world and, as I compare, The Walking Dead on crack. Veronica Smith is very dedicated to putting the realistic terms and in detail with her craft in her writing skills. She managed to make me disgusted through the chapters that I have read. She is definitely someone to keep your eye on, bringing forth the post- apocalyptic worlds and civilian communities- as well as her detail to her characters- within the magnitude of where zombies are going. I am disappointed about how much the zombies in today’s society have turned into a drama and, for better or worse, have turned away from a mass gore fest; but with Veronica Smith, she has created a post apocalyptic world based on a video game- which shouldn’t stop anyone from experiencing the hell and magnitude of this journey. Throughout the inside of her story, people will rise to follow her as if they followed The Walking Dead.
I always give my honest opinion on any book for readers to buy and after 6 years of reviewing nothing changes.
First the only thing I can tell you is that, maybe, just maybe if your a player of the Game you may get this story, and be able to catch on or at least find a favorite character. I sadly could not and found this entire story to be a drag and boring. I have read many Zombie and other apocalypses this year that were outstanding.
This story starts quickly from the year 2016 , with a very short introduction that only touches lightly on the Hamilton Hemorrhagic Fever or "the Blistering as dubbed by the media with the collapse of society. This is all told to you only. No action , gore or spilling of blood.
Now you jump to the Prologue Fall 2032, where you meet a boy named Ricky that wants to be recruited by the Z. E. D.( Zombie Eradication Detachment) ... Where the father quickly hides them ..
Now we jump to Chapter 1, Present Day 2035 where Ricky is with a Raider camp now trying to survive. Then we now quickly jump to year Fall, 2033 where he is thinking back to the loss of his siblings to innocent puppies licking there hands and faces... Then Ricky standing over their burial sites. Then moving on with life.
So, far, we have in a short time, characters not fleshed out enough for me even to care about whether they live or die.. You have the regular Zombies to worry about, innocent , infected puppies to watch, Mutants, Cannibal Tribes, Z.E.D. and even certain Raider camps made up of criminals.
So, we stay in 2035 , until chapter 7 , where we go back to Spring 2033, with the character , Chuck where he tell his story then back to 2035. I think by now you get the picture.
You had so many characters to try and follow, plus the jumping back and forth between time periods.... I had actually lost my place at times and was becoming frustrated. Couldn't remember which character belong where.
You had Rick, Antonio, Shirley, Chuck, Mason Henry, Tracey, Kerry, JJ, Tamra, Bob, The Cocky Team, Trader, Sheila, Bob,
Then at Chapter 12 we fall back to the year 2028, that's when I called it quits. The entire story is too rushed for all theses above characters and more in play.
Bottom, line I did not like it, and trying to follow what was going on back/forth gave me a headache. Plus, there was not a good description of at least one character to hold on to. When I read any story, I need to at least attach to one character that I care about to continue on.
So, in all fairness again, maybe this book will appeal to Y/A's and or Followers of the game.
➡ how I felt about this book. Likes & dislikes and characters ⬇ It was really good. The Zombie's was totally different all of them not the same that makes new change in thing's also liked how you had animals being used as Zombie's. Kinda of scared of those pit thing's!!! I haven't read any of the other reviews and I don't but I can imagine people not happy about few people in his group being killed. But I'm not it's a new world on top of that zombie apocalypse come everyone dies at some point right!! Wasn't big fan for jumping around about the pasted on few of the characters. All of them I believe needed to start at the beginning of the book instead. It wasn't overkill on having some coupling relationship's happening. It's not my cup of tea when I read zombie book's. But you mixed it in very well. And thank you for keeping out details what happen behind closed doors. Lol.

This book is a bit different from other zombie books I have read so far, as it plays about 20 years after the outbreak. Not even was there a zombie virus affecting humans, but animals as well and after the nuclear attempt to blast zombie cities, there are mutants too. But that's not enough hardship for the few survivors. They also fight amongst each other: new goverment army, rebels and cannibals. The book is quite fast paced. I had a bit of a problem with the time jumps, even though each chapter is marked with the year it would have been helpful to have the person's name in the chapter title too and a table of content. Those time jumps are there to give background information on the characters. The interwoven stories were just a bit too conveniently fitting into each others and other facts seemed odd (how do they get fuel, why does no-one get infected by smeared/splashing pus, blood, gore). The author isn't shy of letting go of even good characters. Very realistic mortality rate! Luckily, there are plenty of characters to choose from, sometimes maybe a bit too many or they weren't introduced enough to care if they die. But the zombie animals gave me quite a fright. So, all in all, a good book, no cliffhanger either.
I’ll say from the beginning: I am no great fan of zombie stories. In fact, I’m a little tired of zombies. That said, I loved this story because of the PEOPLE portrayed! I have been a fan of Veronica Smith’s writing for some time now (‘Chalk Outline’ was great!), and was looking forward to read something in a longer form. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. There is so much going on in this book! It is quite the page-turner! Veronica did an amazing job fleshing out the characters... so much so, that one is left, in turns, cheering, booing, and sniffling as they meet their various challenges. I am a firm fan of Veronica’s fertile imagination and look forward to reading more from this talented lady!
I received a free copy of this book as part of a zombie book review club, but this in no way influenced my rating. I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced, and full of zombie mayhem. The characters were interesting and relatable. Be warned though, the author is not afraid to kill off characters, even main ones! So try not to get too attached. I only gave this four stars as there are some editing issues, such as missing words and incomplete and run on sentences. Also, it is sometimes unclear without very careful reading which character's point of view we are following. But as this is only occasional, the book is a pretty good read.
I appreciated the thought that went not only into the infection, but the depth of the characters. The action sequences had me squirming uncomfortably at the though of green ooze squirting everywhere, and the dangers of surviving in such a cruel world.
I loved this book as once I started it, I really couldn't put it down. Veronica Smith did a great job bringing everyone together in this book and really making it seem so easy. This book I would also recommend to others as it's definitely worth reading. Now I'm sitting back and waiting to see what she is going to do with book 2 of this series.
