A laundress? How could she be a laundress? She had never done laundry in her life. Yet after a family tragedy in 1908, kindergarten teacher Julia Bradshaw takes a humble summer job as a laundress for wealthy bachelor David Easterly. She has always been obsessed with seeing inside his beautiful mansion in Rochester, New York. But will her obsession become her undoing? David Easterly's life is orderly, just the way he likes it, until he meets a beautiful woman at his Christmas Eve party. Will her secrets become his undoing too?
This is a book that emphasizes the religion of the heroine. She doesn't smoke, doesn't dance, goes to church, won't date men who aren't Christian, etc. The plot of the story and the interaction of the main characters lack excitement and life. What we have is an educated woman falling in love with the owner of a house she has fantasized over since it was built. She lets herself be treated as if she is socially unacceptable and puts up with a man who won't take her concerns over the enmity of an older woman in his employment seriously and who says he can't pursue a relationship with her because she was once the laundress in his house. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, but it didn't.
Loved the character development of this entertaining historical Christian romance. Despite Julia's strict Christian ideologies in choosing a husband, this was probably more relatable in the early 1900s than the present time. Not positive one can totally apply these values to a life of sudden wealth, one can only surmise that changes would be in her future on how to deal with the expectations. Many twist and turns, not knowing until the very end who the chosen beau would be and everyone's acceptance of it. Would possibly attract more readers if the cover depicted Julia within the mansion. Sweet, clean with a bit of intrigue involved makes this an entertaining and recommended read.
This is the adventure of a modern-day Cinderella who actually met her prince charming and married him! All her Christian principles are challenged as she makes the decision to follow her heart.
God is a very real part of this story and of the Bradshaw family. It is their witness that brings two men to profess Jesus as Lord of their lives!
I couldn't put this book down! The descriptions of the characters and the setting were so vivid . It is an inspirational story that would be enjoyed by women of all ages. I'm looking forward to Beth Livingston's next book.
Julia is a kindergarten teacher, the first college graduate in her family. Mr David Easterly is a business owner & a very prominent man in town but very lonely. Find out what God teaches each of them in this story of faith.
Loved the story. The portrayal of how God moves in our lives is so clear. The removal of Pride is a must and is painful to undergo. Thankful to have found this author.
I liked it very much. This was a new author for me, but was well written and characters well described. There was a couple chapters where there were a comedy of errors that nearly destroyed their feeling for each other. She drove home the point that honesty is the best answer. I would like to read another by this writer. I don't want to give away the story but very enjoyable.
