A brisk, action-packed western. UNDAUNTED by C. G. Faulkner is part two of a trilogy featuring ex-Confederate officer now rancher Tom Fortner. It’s 1877 and Fortner is in a race to drive cattle from Colorado to Montana. Fortner’s rival in the race is a ruthless English cattle baron and his band of hired guns. Hostile Indians and a corrupt lawman also pose threats in a tale told at a cracking pace. Cattle-drive westerns are very familiar of course, but Faulkner keeps thing fresh by throwing in unusual twists, such as the drovers facing peril from avalanches and the erupting geysers of Yellowstone Park!
This second book in the Fortner Saga finds Tom Fortner established in Cimmaron City, Colorado as a sheriff and pillar of the community, having rebuilt his life with a wife, a son and a daughter. He and his friends, with whom you will be familiar if you read Unreconstructed, decide to take on a cattle drive to Montana to fulfill the needs of US Army outposts there. Tom and his friends aren't the only participants; they are up against an unsavory cattle baron who doesn't hesitate to use dirty tricks to ensure that Tom and his friends aren't the first to reach Montana.
Undaunted is consistent with Unreconstructed in using that same serial approach that is very compelling. The cattle drive is full of supsense, sabotage, man struggling against the elements, and even murder.
It's a worthy successor to Unreconstructed and fans of classic Western novels will enjoy it.
