I'm tired of the lies I have to tell to others. Lies that I haven't walked through another Realm separate from this Earth. Lies I don't have in my possession a World-Breaker that can make any city on this globe go crack.
My name is King Henry Price.
I'm tired of the lies I tell myself. Lies I don't miss my mentor's advice. Lies I don't love a woman named Valentine. Lies about how I can do this all alone.
My name is King Henry Price.
I'm tired of the lies they tell us all. Lies that this world ain't run by blood gods. Lies about how dragons have gone extinct. Lies to make us weak. Lies to cover up a great war. Lies, lies, too many lies to count.
My name is King Henry Price and I am the Foul Mouth. I am the Dirt King. I am the Glassbreaker.
Richard Raley was born and raised in Fresno, California and even still lives there on account of the city being an evil vortex you can't escape. He grew up on Star Wars, Transformers, Legos, and Everquest--he never escaped them either. His rise to fame/infamy began with "The Foul Mouth and the Fanged Lady", the first book of THE KING HENRY TAPES, an Urban Fantasy Series that has been described as "Harry Potter meets Pulp Fiction".
This is far and away the best (and biggest) King Henry book to date, and I could go on and on about all the great parts, but I'll leave that to others. Let's get right to the most important point, the point where Richard Raley's career could have really taken off and become a household name if he hadn't totally screwed it all up.
Sure, King Henry is a riveting character, and Richard Raley has done a phenomenal job of creating some of the most powerful and captivating female characters I have ever read, blah blah blah. Ceinwyn, Val, and Annie B in particular (though sadly not present in this book) are possibly some of the best characters anywhere. So he's a great writer who deserves more attention, and everyone should buy his books if they want to be blown away by the depth and complexity of his world, yadda yadda yadda.
Master Guard Sean Watson entered the narrative like a titan among dwarves, and dominated the story-landscape around him every time he appeared. Which, sadly, was not as much as it should have been. These are King Henry's books, after all, so it is slightly understandable, but upon finishing the book and seeing that there were no plans for a re-branding of the current series, or at the very least a spinoff series, to follow the continuing adventures of the vastly more intelligent, handsome, and debonair Sean Watson...well, you can imagine my disappointment. And if you've read the book, you probably share that disappointment. This is the character that could have graced not only book covers but future movie posters, appealing to both male and female moviegoers alike. I like to envision him being played by someone with the looks of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger and the acting prowess of Leonardo DiCaprio or Daniel Day Lewis. Maybe the problem is that the actor needed to portray this god-like character doesn't exist yet?
Annie B would have immediately gravitated to this pillar of manliness, and the series could have continued with the two of them kicking ass and taking names while solving all of the complications that appear to be piling up in front of King Henry and his companions. Master Guard Sean Watson, soon to be God Emperor Sean Watson if Raley had played his cards right, would have strode through the morass of intrigue and outer realms alike, cutting through all obstacles with his sharp wit and rogue-ish good charm, and when that didn't work, his two mighty fists. Or just as likely, the two fists of the alluring and seductive Annie B. Followed by a few romps in the hay, if you know what I mean!
But alas, Raley chose the path well-traveled and stuck with reliable and rock-steady King Henry instead. Oh, what might have been!
So has King Henry. This volume is as heavy, serious, painful, and trying as the Mancy Martial Artist. It is also bloodier and more humbling for our protagonist. Yet it has the humor, fun, and silliness that pulled me into the series.
Bad parts: The flash back sections have a very different tone than the main parts. I ended up skipping most of those for later reading. An interesting novella but poorly integrated. Proofreading is an issue. Some of that is just KH narration, but many real errors seem to have slipped through.
............... Kindle Unlimited - Thank you! ............... Heads up! There really is an important "second half" to this part of the story. You really need to read "Assault on Dread Fortress Paine" after this. And the " ... Little Trips" before that if you haven't already read it. Kind of takes "Go Big" to serious levels. Guess there was just too much for one book? Be nice if the x.5's were inserted directly in the series list. They really aren't extraneous fluff. That's another hint if you haven't already read the "Short Pack One" entries.
Big stuff happens in this book. (Too much to even begin to list or hint at.) You certainly won't be bored.
I love the school stuff but it kind of looks like things will be moving on to grander scopes with the research center, realms, weres, and vampires. Seems like the cost of peace was the mages really getting played by the vampires.
Looking forward to research center scenarios. Some under appreciated, highly qualified, female artificers getting plum spots? 😎💕 Heinrich and Susan? Hmmmm... Annie B?!?!?!
One minor nitpicky consideration: There already is a cure for anima madness --- embracing a were totem ala Horatio and Josephine. You still lose a mage, though. Might not work after onset? Not the best, but an interim solution? But they'd have to really out the anima quota to use it?
OH.... I'm so... angry. It's a fucking 5. Even thou I hated the school story. C'mon, it's not even a spoiler. It WAS Soto Crazy, we just got a few details and what she did to Welf. Other than that? Boring as fuck. Like rewatching a killer mistery that you already know the killer. THIS, was supposedly drop this rating to a 3,5 right? RIGHT? Wrong. The 'current' timeline has one of the best dialogues, characters and development that RR did SO FAR. Hate the motherfucker for that. One moment I'm bored out of my mind... The other I'm crying coz of Vick. Or Val. Fuck, even Poug. Bunch of secrets revealed, got us some big answers and a resolution. Can't say much else, coz it's deep spoiler territory. Just this:
This is what King Henry Price has named the crew of he and his friends who are opposing the Curator. King Henry is being taken to the Guild, the stuffy group of Articers of which KH is not a member, for Censure, to answer for crimes in their eyes and against their rules. But King Henry has a plan.
Once again the story bounces between a time in the Asylum and current. The faceoff against the Curator is here. A vulgar anti-hero and his team of talented misfits taking on near impossible odds in a tremendous wrap of some of the lurking storylines
I read this book when it first came out and thought I reviewed it then, oh well. This series is amazing, this book is f'ing awesome! Yes I am using "A" word adjectives, a suck it up buttercup, it is apropos. Raley, you better be duct taped to that desk chair cranking out book number 7. The only down side to this series is the California aspect, fruits and nuts man, fruits and nuts.
I liked the book. I keep wondering who turns out to be King Henry's wife in the future. It seems to me that unfortunately Boomworm is probably doomed. So initially I thought it must be Miranda. I still think she is a strong possibility. In the first book The Fanged Lady, King Henry mentions being embarrassed about his daughter hearing her father talk about her mother (his wife) in sexual terms. That opened up other possibilities to my mind such a Eva Reti, Isabel Soto, or even ANNIE B.

I absolutely love this series and all the characters, creative twist on the concept of magic, but also gritty and not predictable. King Henry Price is such a complex and fascinating MC. Mr Raley, please keep writing, I can’t wait to find out what happens next!
What a ride! The growth on King Henry and his merry band is phenomenal! This story was so good, and of course you are left wanting more,as it should be. I'm off to the next mini adventure.Great story!
The series is definitely picking up steam, but some of the intrigue feels too forced and gets tiring. But the characters are interesting and it’s worth the read.
I love King Henry and I loved this installment. These are not for people easily offended by bad language or reference to sex. But the stories are soooo good!! I highly recommend to anyone looking for an original urban fantasy set of books with a fairly unique magic system. Also for a self published author the editing is pretty much spot on!!
At last at last! Those of us addicted to the Foul Mouth have received another sweet release... and it is epic. (No, really.) At this point Raley could probably publish a shopping list and I'd buy it. Yes, he's that good. Don't believe me? Read his other works before even touching the King Henry stories. The sets! Where does he get these settings? The plots / mechanics! World-building in the finest of traditions. And lastly, but absolutely not least, the characters! Whether simple or complex, all of his characters are richly dressed and well-made. You can sink into them like a starving root dives into the best soil.
Case in point: King Henry Price. As pugnacious and foul and coarse as they come. A bull in a china shop, breaking glass everywhere (see what I did there?), he's almost an anti-hero. But it's that 'almost' that does the magic, and when things are bad -- really bad -- do you want some high-minded hero or the experienced street brawler at your back? Which one is going to Get Things Done? Especially if they mean the world to him? Oh yeah: no gentleman here, folks. But if you want a foul-mouthed snarling animal literally covered in dirt and blood rising time and again to fight back for himself, and for those who can't? This is that guy.
No spoilers but the story only gets better. Hell, I thought it was topping off only halfway thru! But no. It gets even better. The ups and downs we've been through have brought us to this point: the story has been great, and now comes the spot light. Everything Will Change after this, and I can't wait to read it. Can't. Wait. [Oh yeah, won't it be awesome when Heinrich finally finds out what he's wearing? Shock. Stun. Awe. Disbelief. Anger. Beware casual gifts from King Henry...]
So do yourself a favor: buy every damn Raley book that comes out. Buy them for others and give them as gifts. Buy extra copies because ... just because. This guy is good. He deserves the sales and you deserve to read his work. No, I am not related. No, I am not a member of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce. I am a long-time reader of many authors and I'm telling you this guy is really good. He takes the time, he does the work (months and months of work), he slips in cheeky culture and game references, dear God he edits! Seriously, stop reading this review and buy all of it, then sit down to weeks of sheer bliss. Enjoy.
Another fine outing from the Foul Mouth. It's clear that Raley has put a lot of thought not just into his characters but also his world building. A number of secrets are revealed - better yet it all hangs together. Foul Mouth still has that ridiculously dirty brand of humor but if you like that sort of thing there's some good lines in here. If you don't, you probably shouldn't read this book. Not quite as laugh-out-loud funny as some of the earlier efforts but really makes up for it with the aforementioned world-building and the appearance of so many fun characters that we've grown to know and love.
My one quibble is that we have a few too many extended monologues (even though the entire book is essentially one long monologue) where our hero does a long soliloquy on his feelings. But other than skimming a few of those passages, I wouldn't change anything.
If you're up to this book then you already know how the KH books go. I'll just tell you what departs from the norm. Good; Much longer, great length
Bad; Massive foreshadowing, especially in the murder mystery part. That seems so blatantly obvious a 10 year old could have solved it but our genius protagonist couldn't for some reason. Very repetitive, especially around feelings and finally telling various people the same (with slight variation) things. Teenage girl level romance is now a central theme. Ending that's not really an ending. Hero's side is amassing a lot of power, to the point where there's not much challenge in it.
Some of these issues have been there for a book or two already but it's now reaching the point where it takes the rating down to a 3 for me (from 5).
Still a very enjoyable series, particularly quite a lot of reveals in this one to some questions we've all had for a while. If I had to say anything against the book it would probably be King Henry's rants. His are very colorful and full of imagery about earthquakes, pits, and explosions.
As the reader we're going along with his thought process so even though it can be a bit on the nose, we can follow along. However I cant help but feel all the other characters in the book who don't have the advantage of being inside his head must get so confused when he tries to give a speech.
Still dont let that put you off, its nothing that you haven't seen in the previous books. Like I said lots of reveals in this one and a great addition to the series.
Oh I'm so tempted to unleash my own Foul Mouth to describe how good this book was, but I'll restrain myself... Barely.
So many reveals and conclusions. I loved it. I'm really hoping Obadiah is really dead and won't come back like a cockroach. I'm glad King Henry and Val are back together and that he found the courage to tell her he loves her... Well write it to her. I'm also glad he made up with Cenwynn. And I'm interested to learn more about Susan.
Anyway I'm really looking forward to seeing how it all turns up in the next novel.

Very, very sleep deprived this morning. This book ranks right there with Fanged Lady for favorite position. The character development and growth is amazing. The action is amazing. King Henry Price bares his soul and you see the beginnings of true greatness unfold, on the Foul Mouth's terms of course. Long live the Dirt King.
Holy crap! This was amazing. I was halfway through the first chapter when I got excited that this was going to be a mancy Ocean's 11. And it was! For a little over half the book. And then the crap hit. And it GOT BETTER.
Meteyos? Check. The Curator? Check. Boomworm? Double check!
This is the start of a new phase for King Henry. And I can't wait to see where he goes.
This is another example in the ever ascending quality of mister Raley's writing. this is by far one of the most enjoyable stories I've read. Foul Mouth and his team are as always funny and getting on the nerves of every authority figure they come across. If you've read the other there's no way this will disappoint, if you haven't? then what are you doing here get yourself to the fanged Lady.
A little choppy in the beginning, but once the book hit its stride it was painful to put down. King Henry is one of the most imaginative series out there and this one shot it out of the park. I read a lot and a book like this will make it difficult to return to the regular sci fi/fantasy options!
Brilliant. Needs to be read twice to get the full impact.
King Henry’s voice is getting so strong now. And he has finally attained full agency. He won’t be restrained by rules, laws, treaties or lies any more.
And he can use that World-Breaker.
Now how will he deal with the consequences of letting all the truths out?
This has got to be the best new fantasy series I have come across in quite some time. Not for the faint of heart or for those who have a problem with impropriety. If you like dirty humor And don't mind swearwords this one is for you.
What a heck of a way to wrap up this story arc!! This book of the series was LONG. It felt like about two books worth of material and every bit of it was AWESOME! If you've come this far in the series, do yourself a favor and put this one at the top of your reading list.
