"The most exciting and disturbing voice in extreme horror in quite some time. His stuff hurts so good." – Brian Keene, author of The Rising
"Body Art is the lost collaborative film from Larry Flynt and David Cronenberg. It’s messy and brutal and a lot of fun." - Splatterpunk Zine
"Whatever style or mode Triana is writing in, the voice matches it unfailingly . . . it’s a safe bet we’ll be seeing his name a lot in the years to come." – Cemetery Dance
Art comes in many forms…
As an undertaker, the human body is Harold’s canvas.
For Rutger and Kandy, famous adult stars from the 80s, flesh is also their preferred medium of art.
When Harold’s ex-lovers start arriving in body bags, the undertaker believes he’s receiving a message to create a new masterpiece.
Rutger and Kandi are also on a mission. Their new task is to create the most shocking movie imaginable and solidify their place in film history.
Toby and Jessica are recent high school graduates just looking for some fun. Unfortunately, their cabin vacation has landed them in the wrong place at the wrong time.
All the while, a mysterious red dust surrounds these unique individuals, drawing their worlds together in bizarre and horrifying ways.
Art can be dangerous, and Body Art is the deadliest of all…
This is a 1st edition copy of the novel, featuring a new "safe for work cover"
Kristopher Triana is the author of Gone to See the River Man, Full Brutal, They All Died Screaming, Shepherd of the Black Sheep, Toxic Love, and more.
His fiction has appeared in countless magazines and anthologies and has been translated into multiple languages, drawing praise from Publisher's Weekly, Cemetery Dance, Rue Morgue, Scream, The Ginger Nuts of Horror and others.
Full Brutal won the Splatterpunk Award for Best Horror Novel of 2019, and Triana won the award again in 2022 for The Night Stockers, which he cowrote with Ryan Harding.
Kristopher Triana is so uber-talented that it sickens me, almost as much as his content does. So this now holds the record for being the most vulgar book that I’ve read. I normally just read whenever I have free time and go for as long as possible, but I had to take frequent mental health breaks during this one. It is very intense, with an ungodly amount of very vivid and detailed sex, necrophilia, and bloodshed. Like take whatever you’re imagining and triple it. So reader beware before purchasing this book, if you’re not totally comfortable with those types of things. However the story itself is really, really great, the writing is top notch, and each character is fully explored. I felt like some of Harold’s story was a bit too abbreviated and the very ending fell flat, but other than those two minor critiques, I really enjoyed this book. Again, Triana is an amazing writer and this was no exception.
What do a young couple (Jessica and Toby), an ageing porn star (Kandi), a porn producer (Rutger Malone), a Mexican shadow player (Javier, reminds me a bit on Danny Trejo) and an undertaker (Harold) have in common? Yes, they appear in this book and are connected in a very special way. This was definitely one of the most extreme horror novels I ever came across. Jessica mutates into a kind of sexual demon when participating on filming an illegal street porn movie on Rutger's Ranch. Harold builds his own dream woman with body parts of women deceased he's cutting away. Do you want to know more? Add wild screwing scenes (Jessica loves being taken anally), necrophilia and one of the most evil monsters ever seen then you can imagine what awaits you in this book. Will anybody get out of it alive or do they all go down in an apocalyptic fire? Will the movie described in the book ever get finished? Tremendously well written page turning extreme horror at its very best. This was rough stuff. Highly recommended!
This is probably the best extreme horror novel I have read so far and I read a few dozen of those.
I do strongly believe that talking about anything prevents topics from beeing underrepresented or suppressed, which causes much more damage and madness than an open conversation. Like this old saying that cultures that don´t talk about sh** and dirt tend to treat humans like that. I would not go so far as to say that bare-knuckle literature like that makes the world a better place, but it certainly causes less harm than this ubiquitous suppression of grievances.
Another option is that I am just searching for reasons to justify my, yea, extreme reading. Oh, how cool and badass I am.
So the reviewing of extreme horror novels has begun... Why you may ask, do I read this stuff? Well, I read many horror novels, watched horror films and played horror games when I was still quite young ( without my parents knowing about it) and probably this toughened me up regarding the explicitness of such content. It is simply amazing what perversions the human mind can create and because I deem movies to be quite a waste of time, I changed to extreme horror. And believe me, no movie comes close to what is described in this genre.
I have to warn everyone who thinks that Saw and very extreme horror movies are hardcore because this stuff is so badass that one might not be able to read it without getting traumatized and I am not joking. But after all these warning messages back to the book:
The special thing here is that real phobias, manias, fetishes, etc. are included and described realistically while integrating them in a sick world full of violence, perversion, rape, hate, snuff, murder, etc. In other novels, there is just physical or sexual violence, but in this case, one could say that there is a kind of instructive note in it, because the manifestations of the mental illnesses are described correct and in detail.
There are some fresh, great ideas I have seen in no extreme horror novel before, be it the combination of necromancing, zombie tropes with the modern age or the resolution of subplots in chapters with unique happenings. If you deem yourself so spoiled that you can endure literature like this, please enter the stairway to hell while I hold the door open for you.
I have a theory - please bear with me: The ghost of Marquis De Sade possessed Mr. Triana while he was reading Frankenstein, inspiring him to write his own version.
I'm going back and forth with my opinion on this one - there was SO much weird (and sometimes just plain gross) sex in the story...but if a large part of the story consists of shooting illegal porn, you can't really judge it too harshly.
So, here is the thing: This story is extreme and will offend most people because of the explicit, vile sexual content. But, this is exactly what the cover promises to deliver. And since there is a supernatural story line, everything made sense and kind of felt necessary to get to the end.
Yes, it is gross. Very, very gross. Yes, it is vile. Yes, it is about filth to the nth degree. But - the author wrote well enough to take me through the story. And here comes the question I have to ask myself about the rating...how entertaining was it?
I think most people (who doesn't know or read the genre) will probably abandon this one. I also think that some people will view this as nothing more than garbage - but there is a story in there. So, if you can get past things like Apotemnophilia (I had to look it up), maybe you should give it a go. However, if you think you will find some deep, hidden message about the dangers of porn and the cruel industry people become victims of, you might be overthinking this one.
Well, at the end of the day, I will read this author again in the future. But don't go into this if you can't have an open mind - you will NOT get through it.
This is an incredible ode to horror, gore, human depravity and monstrous spirits. I read this book in two sittings, unable to put it down because I was so immersed in the action and the various characters. If you are craving a book with all the triggers and a totally riveting hell of a plot, then this one is for you. Five red and menacing stars.
✦ well written, absolutely insane, gory, disturbing and disgusting, which are the things i enjoyed. however, sadly, this is probably my least favourite book by this author.
"without fear and disgust to hold us back, don’t we risk going out of control?"
✦ i wasn't a fan of the supernatural elements in this book, they simply didn't make much sense for me overall. highkey ruined the whole story for me. i also wasn't a fan of the very over the top ending. 2.5 stars rounded up.
A young couple, Jessica and Toby, are on a cabin vacation when they find themselves staying next to an ageing-famous pornstar, Kandi. They soon find out she is doing a shoot there and Jessica is eager to go and check it out. She’s abit more sexually open and adventurous than Toby is, he’s very reserved and hesitant. Of course he has watched porn and knows of Kandi, but would he want to be in one of those movies himself? They soon meet Rutger, who alongside Kandi, found fame during the “golden age”of pornography. He is all about pushing things to the extremes with the content he makes. Jessica immediately wants to be signed up for starring in these movies, but as soon as Toby sees what they entail, he is out of there. He feels sickened that this Jessica isn’t the girl he fell in love with. But he hasn’t seen anything compared to the extremes Kandi and Jessica are about to go through… Will they end up actually liking what they are participating in? Harold is an undertaker who considers himself an artist. He is an expert in bringing the dead back to “life” with his embalming skills. He finds that one-by-one his ex-lovers are arriving to him in body bags and believes this is a sign to create his best artistic masterpiece yet. Art comes in many forms - how will the worlds of these unconventional, morbid, “artists” collide? The red dust is covering as monsters are emerging..
This is an extreme horror novel so please proceed with caution if you’re considering reading it !! Overall, Body Art is well-written and engaging. I noticed a few typos here and there which I reported on my Kindle, but they didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story… if you can call it that because of some of the plot points wow lol 😅 I am becoming quite the extreme horror fanatic and this one mixes in perfectly the 70’s pulp style of horror with the more modern storytelling.
At the beginning of the story, I thought I knew what this tale was about. But I was wrong, so wrong. Then the story began to take another direction. And everything became more. Everything was more gory, there was more depravity. All the scenes were more disgusting and pure evil . Then it was total mayhem, an infernal nightmare for the characters. This is the most disturbing, disgusting, brutal, depraved and weird story I have read. Well, until I found another story of this caliber, if it’s possible. Highly recommended if you don’t have triggers and you like Splatterpunk genre. 🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰
It was a woman’s silhouette, walking through the smoke, engulfed in flames. She raised one arm, waved at him, and then splintered into hundreds of flies that flew up and out of the window, sailing free, lost forever in the gentle gust of the warm, night wind.
Triana has not disappointed me yet and Body Art is pretty close to a masterpiece of extreme horror. This starts off with three story arcs that you know will come together somehow. In one, we have a morbid, depraved undertaker who seems to enjoy taking bits of his female cadavers; you know, the special and perfect bits, the ones just perfect for his own art project. Another has an aging porn star getting a call from one of her oldest and most famous producers asking her to star in a new film; this is after more than a decade of her wallowing around in low budget crap. Finally, we have a pair of horny teenagers who just graduated from high school going to a cabin outside of Knoxville for a sexy weekend.
I really enjoyed the introduction by John McNee which puts modern horror fiction into perspective by looking at the cultural and economic conditions they arose with, growing up watching VHS horror films that could now reach a very broad audience, for example. Horror films do not equal horror novels, however, as they are very different experiences. What Triana gives us here bumps the limits on extreme and gore for sure, but also explores the meaning of art itself. The film Rutger wants Kandi Hart to star in belongs in the underground, fetish side of porn, where any sexual depravity can be fantasized and boy is it a doozy. Yet, while anyone with a video camera can shoot porn stuff, Rutger is and always has been known as an artist. Hence, Kandi agrees to the film with the one provision that she herself will not be harmed. So, two types of body art-- a morticians and a porn director!
While all the above is going on, Triana introduces some supernatural aspects that are pretty much over the top for sure, but blend into the story nicely. Compulsively readable as usual, Triana's prose flows here as we go down 10 miles of bad road! The only reason I did not bump my rating to 5 has to do with the denouement, but YMMV here. 4.5 porn stars!!
So vulgar and so repugnant but you just can't look away.
This book is just about that, not being able to look away and to stop.
"The servant had become the master."
A group of people in distressing situations is my favorite thing, every character was unconventional and interesting. I LOVED it.
"She remembered this body and flesh. She had dined on its wanton sex. This body had made her cum. She was drawn to it, beguiled by it, and suddenly she was choked by a raging hunger. “You are mine,” she said, hearing the static-filled, insect buzz of her own voice."
TW: I'm not kidding when I say this is fucking disgusting y'all, if you're disturbed by gore, blood and necrophilia (fucking ew💀) you WONT like this.
I thought I had a basic idea of what I was getting into with this one just by looking at the cover. What I didn’t know was the extreme level of pure unadulterated depravity and over-the-top sickness I was in store for. I think I almost barfed on several occasions.
Alrighty, people. Let’s make a movie…
All we need is an artistic mortician, an aging master of the cock, a young couple on a lovers getaway and the Shakespeare of smut to film it all.
Ready, Set, Action!
Genital shrubberies, fabulous face lifts, apotemnophilia, rebirth, rocking the corpse shocker, binky sushi, whores for gore and thick pink Goddess dust.
Blood had become her cum and she wanted to give the whole world a facial.
Fuck man, that line is pure gross out gold. Classic.
This book is everything I want from a splatterpunk novel. It's fucking awesome.
Kristopher Triana's prose is eloquent, succinct, obscene, and efficient, and plays out in a highly cinematic style that makes even complex scenes of the most grotesque carnage crystal-clear in my poor, messed-up head. There were moments when I was laughing, others while I was cringing, and others where I (almost) cared for the fates of the degenerate fiends that occupy these splattered pages.
Basically, if you want to read the most horrendous erotically infused horror that offers more than just a litany of grossness (but has plenty of that too), this is the perfect book.
3.5 Stars I randomly picked up this book unaware that it was a piece of extreme horror. Given the premise, this was a very intense and gruesome story with some very vulgar scenes and a lot of illicit sexual content. While not my personal subgenre, I actually appreciated the quality of the writing and storytelling. If you are interested in trying out some extreme horror, this could be a good place to start. Just be prepared for LOTS of highly disturbing body horror.
Damn, that was intense. This book started out tame, a normal-ish porn feel to it. Then, it took a hard fucking turn. Triana's writing is so smooth and clean you almost don't even realize the filth you're reading. The first half was great, but it built up the climax so perfectly. The second half was chaos and all out brutality. I had no idea who was making it out alive or who was going to succumb to the Goddess. My favorite of his by far.
Oh...Just Wow!! This book was like a human sized blender...it took everything and everyone in its path...churned it all up and poured out utter filth, untold gore and vile violent sex. I loved the way the book gathered speed from start to finish and bought all the characters together and ended it one depraved mass of bloody disgusting filth.
This has to be one of Kristopher Triana's best books, "Body Art" was a fantastic read and it has nothing to do with getting tattooed!!
There are so many trigger warnings here and I do believe many readers will be truly disgusted and offended.
Holy crap!! This book was awesome!!! Triana at his best. Horrible, gory, soooo gory with an amazing story. I couldn’t stop reading. Probably one of my most favorite this year. It’s got some heft to it too!
"It froze Javier, not so much out of fear, but out of sheer befuddlement. The thing, while disgusting, was a whole new horror even to his jaded eyes. It was a sculpture of depravity, a perverted mannequin born from madness—a waking nightmare, but also something much, much more. Something special. This is something the world has never seen."
“These were a new form of art. Some art was meant to shock. It was supposed to make people feel things they'd never felt before.”
I absolutely was not ready for the depravity in this book. And I know I should have known better since this is Triana, but I still went into it completely unprepared. Body Art had me sucked in and drowning in its dark, relentless depths, only to leave me gasping for air. This is the first book that has ever made me pause, stare off into space, and genuinely question what I just read.
The imagery is vivid in a way that feels almost unfair, too good for something this disturbing. Triana’s writing is masterful, pulling you in deeper even when you want to look away. Beneath all the blood and rot, though, lies a surprisingly thoughtful commentary on art itself.
At its core, I think Body Art is about what happens when art loses its soul, when the drive to shock or stand out becomes more important than creation itself. In a world where art is easily mass-produced, the people who pour their hearts into their craft struggle to be seen. In Triana’s world, that desperation curdles into obsession, leading his characters to sacrifice their morals, their sanity, and ultimately, themselves.
This story explores limits, the ones we cross and the ones we cling to. Some characters surrender completely to their basest desires, seduced by gore and pain, while others try and fail to resist. By the end, everyone has lost something to the darkness.
Body Art isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s grotesque, transgressive, and relentlessly bleak, but also deeply intelligent in what it’s saying about the cost of creation and the boundaries of human desire.
Oddly enough, a book about losing yourself to depravity made me realize my own limits. I think I’ll be taking a little break from the dark after this one.
I finished Body Art by Kristopher Triana last night. Well, I’m not entirely sure what to say. It was interesting. The story was good, but then the red sand and that “art”. Something didn’t sit right with me. I couldn’t put my finger on it and still can’t. It was just okay for me. 3.5 stars
This is truly extreme horror. Two separate plot threads (an unsavory mortuary worker and an underground porn shoot) collide in to an orgy of depravity soaked in sundry bodily fluids.
If you are looking for grue, you can't do better than Body Art. The difference for me is the skill of Mr. Triana both in constructing a compelling plot and populating it with real characters. We may care about them, we may hate them, but there aren't any aren't interested in.
Outside of the masters like Wrath James White and Edward Lee this is the finest extreme horror story I have read in many years. 5 stars, highly recommended.
This was well written and entertaining. However the supernatural aspect did nothing for me and I didn’t care for the ending. My least favourite book by Triana.
"The cleaver came up once more and when it came back down this time it landed on **** throat. His cries turned into a gargle and blood began to rise in his mouth and bubble out of his nostrils. Jessica grabbed him by the hair and hacked his neck again, decapitating him. She rode and rode, howling in orgasmic delight."
Body Art was a book that has been sitting on my bookshelf taunting me. It would call out to me and tell me that this will bring me a disgusting thrill. It would mock me and make clucking noises, so I couldn’t look away any more.
I’ve seen all the reviews and saw the long list of trigger warnings but nothing will prepare you for something like this. It was severely messed up and I dug it. I’m one sick son of a bitch, so this was one that I read quickly. It was so well written and fast paced. It has me intrigued. I will definitely try more by this author.
Warning to others. This definitely won’t be for a lot of people. If you love extreme horror and erotica then this will be for you. Just don’t eat anything while reading. You’ve been warned.
My first thought when reading the title was, "Tattoos and body mods, oh my!" Although there isn't a piercing to be found, this is one deliciously demented and sexy read. (It gave me nightmares and let me say, that is nothing to sneeze at. It takes a lot to make me cringe, let alone disturb me enough to cross into my sleeping brain.) But even more than that, its a damn good, well written story. Try not rooting for the tough as nails Kandi. And even feeling sympathy for the not quite socially adept Harold, who only wants what we all want. Come to think of it, that's what made the book so disturbing. Any author can throw morbid ideas around, it takes an especially sick and talented mind (with all due respect to Kristopher Triana of course) to write a story where you are repulsed, yet cannot put the book down. This book was featured as April's book of the month in a group I'm in. As I understand it, this is book takes a slightly different path than his usual writings. Huge kudos to any author who can step outside their comfort zone, and deliver such a masterpiece. This is what makes the good writers great!
Body Art is a wild, horrific and twisted ride from front to back. Unfortunately, where this story ended up, the twist of it, just didn’t really do it for me personally. That being said, I was still engaged the whole time and mostly enjoyed this read.
In true Triana style, this was INSANE. Smut, gore, horror and depravity throughout. I am fascinated with his mind and how he comes up with these ideas. Incredible. All in all, despite being my least favourite Triana read thus far, it was still pretty good. If you’re looking to read something that will make you question your sanity and make you squirm, this will do it!
What can I say? I’m a sucker for snuff film related books. This book starts out normal enough, but it quickly snowballs into a hyper violent smorgasbord, from a modern day supernatural Frankenstein, to a barely legal teen with an unsatisfiable appetite for blood. I expected a lot of what this book ending up giving readers, but it still found a way to completely surprise me and audibly ask myself, “what the fuck”? If you’re in the mood for some extreme sexual acts and intense violence, look no further than Body Art.
