I am an introvert and dread social occasions where I know there will be strangers. I am not a people person - which is why I was interested in listening to this book - and I 100% identified with the points made about feeling your heart beating faster, your palms sweating, stomach churning. That's me! But by listening to this book I definitely learned of some tricks to try and lessen those reactions, as well as how to develop a plan for handling small talk.
Approaching a stranger is not high on my list of things to do, but sometimes you can't avoid it. The next time I am put into this situation I know how to broaden topics of conversation so as to avoid one word responses for all parties involved. I also learned how to engage myself better while listening to the other person talk, because I am the person who is thinking of a good response to your story, as opposed to actually listening to you speak.
Since the audio was only an hour long and I enjoyed the narrators voice, I will be listening to this over and over. The tips and tricks contained in this short self-help book are good in my opinion. Sure the tips and tricks are things you have probably heard before, but maybe not. Or maybe they haven't been explained to you in a way that you can put into practice. Regardless, as an introvert and social setting avoider, I liked this. I especially appreciated the tips on dating. First dates are killer, even if you know the person. I would really like a book dedicated to dating.

And honestly, I recommend this for those who are looking for helpful advice, but don't want a long novel telling you what and how to do it. This book was just the right length - quick and to the point, but the chapters didn't feel rushed or glossed over. I give this 5 stars all round.

Lately I've been on a self improvement kick, and picked this book up on a recommendation from (wait for it) a BuzzFeed listicle. It was like $3 so I thought I didn't have much to lose, except my time. I read the whole book before my plane took off, and I don't feel like I learned anything that wasn't already in How To Win Friends and Influence People or any of the other books designed to help improve your interpersonal skills. It's a short read and it's inexpensive so there's not much of a downside.
I personally felt like I didn't learn much. I was looking for strategies to start conversations and keep them going. Very little was dedicated to this compared to, for instance, overcoming anxiety or dating, which I really wasn't looking for. But almost every subject matter was explored in a very shallow fashion with no references whatsoever.
If you're really looking for help in this area, I encourage you to find a longer and more professionally written book.

Coming in at just over an hour long 'Small Talk' wastes no time in giving you the good. It moves quickly through many hints and tips, giving examples along the way, to help you to improve social situations. It provides ways to overcome anxiousness, engage in varied and interesting conversation, and to accept then you still make awkward mistakes.
I really liked that it took the time it needed to explain each item, but did not stretch it out. I find that many 'self help' books take an hours worth of discussion points and stretch it into an 8 hour book through lots of padding and anecdotal stories that don't add much meat. This book does not to that, and is much better for it.
Narration by Corinne Phillips is good. Clear, well paced and easy to understand. The short text doesn't give Phillips a whole lot to work with in variation but it isn't needed here. The narration provided works well for the book.

Non svela nulla di sensazionale sulle tecniche di comunicazione, però si focalizza su alcuni punti importanti, sui quali alle volte, specie quando si vorrebbe conoscere qualcuno, non ci si impegna abbastanza o non ci si sofferma. Non credo che diventerò un latin lover con questo libro, ne un chiaccherone animatore di feste però magari qualche parola in piu riusciro a spiaccicarla con la gente. :)
This is more of a booklet than a true book, given there are so few pages. It has good tips and reminders, though nothing that is outside of common sense. The content might be best suited for people that grew up outside of the social American culture and are looking for ways to acclimate themselves within a social setting.
The blurb for the book is almost as long as the book itself! I don't feel like the book description accurately matches the book; the bullet points, especially, don't seem to ring true to what I read in the text itself, or they were completely overstated. This book is a super short, speedy read that treads no new ground nor does it offer much in the way of insights. If you've read other books on conversation, you heard it all before, or you may have even reasoned your way to many of these ideas yourself; they are that common. Some sections in the book are so short and general that it is almost laughable. If you're looking for genuine insight into how to engage in small talk, you will most likely find better elsewhere.

Teaches Life Skills. Brilliant self-help book. Unlike many others in this genre, the reader doesn't feel patronised by the author. The book covers most new social situations in life that puts us on the spot, where many people feel embarrassed and exposed, It encourages eye contact, listening skills, body language, gives techniques and ideas for overcoming awkward situations. The information contained in this book teaches life skills without encouraging copy-cat learning. It isn't a long book but is so helpful in reducing anxiety from social situations or being put on the spot. So now, go and practice.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to review this audiobook. Connie Phillips did a wonderful job of narrating this book. It is a quick listen but so full of information. My Mom who is 80 listened with me and said she learned a lot. I will listen again and again because you gleam new information each time you listen. I think everyone should read or listen to this book. Everyone could use this info no matter their age or gender.
I work at a call center and talk to scores of strangers per day. This book was helpful at giving me ideas of how to have meaningful and unique interactions with people I don't know. Don't let the brevity fool you... this book was full of use information and tips that can help you talk to people.

This was really good. It took the time to explain the small cues in conversations and social interaction and the issues involved in small talk in general. It was a very encouraging read, and Corinne Phillips was a brilliant narrator who really brought the book to life.
The book covers the very basics of small talk and managing anxiety that comes with it. It's ok for starters, however everyone looking for more in-depth look on this subject should look elsewhere. I was disappointed by lack of revision after each chapter and not enough information about online chatting. It was still an OK and useful read though.
Short and easy to read, this book offers some really good ideas in improving social skills. I found some young adults with social anxiety and autism were able to read and use some of these ideas that do not come naturally to them.

There are some great strategies for finding new topics and ways to engage people. Finally, something to talk about other than the weather! I’m going to a big conference and this was just what I needed to point me in the direction for some prep work before meeting a lot of new people. Great little book!

Good points, more of an easy read than an instruction manual. As neurodivergent person, I was really looking forward to this guide but was disappointed with the formatting and content.
