Great production value, but kind of disjointed. I assume there was a final product, but the reader never sees it, just sketches of a work in progress.

I'd recommend this for graphic designers and art students. For people interested in fairy tales, I think it will prove quite disappointing.

This was a great peak into the many steps of the concept design process! The wonderful artwork included is also very inspiring. I wish I was handed this book on day 1 in my college art studio, it would have drastically changed my perspective on how to approach design projects. I will be referencing this book in the future!

One note: this is a good example of why a woman should be in the room when women are being designed. I was a bit disappointed to see the character designs for the princess (a woman in a bra and jean skirt with a thong) as compared to the very industrial, mystical, larger than life designs for all of the other (male) characters.

This is essentially a sketchbook. It also looks very much like a school project for art students. And the art students in particular are Khang Le, Mike Yamada and Felix Yoon.

The Skillful Huntsman is actually a story by the Brothers Grimm.

Based on the short story, the artists then came up with concept drawings for the characters, set, props and environment. As you can see in the video, there are lots of sketches on character designs. For every subject, there's comment from the artist on the thought process for the creation. And just beneath that comment is another one from the Scott Robertson, a teacher at the Art College of Design.

It's fun to see how the 3 artists interpret the stories and come up with their own unique concepts and designs.

Bear in mind that this book was published in 2005. These talented students have already gone on to work at major studios.

The Skillful Hunstman is an attempt to show the kind of production process that is involved with AAA games and movies. The focus is on the choices that good preproduction can allow, and just how diverse the ideas can range when making use of simple techniques. Some great tips on designing environments and characters, although I wish the environment sections could have been larger.

Nevertheless, what is there proves to be valuable and interesting. Many times a fine line is trodden between believability and the fantastical, and they touch a lot on how to get across new and strange ideas by grounding them in believable ideas. Simply creating over the top design without a thought to how they would work or be influenced by the real world can result in sloppy designs or just bad work in general. Historical groundings of designs in reality, and thinking about how the designs would be adapted over time are all major parts of creating something. Aside from that, the book is just incredibly inspiring to flip through.
