Murder, She Wrote #14

Trick or Treachery

Rate this book
Jessica Fletcher gets spooked in this mystery from the USA Today bestselling Murder, She Wrote series.

It's late October in Cabot Cove and, as Halloween approaches, something strange is in the air. The arrival of a self-righteous, fire-and-brimstone spiritual medium has some townspeople on the lookout for curses and evil omens. Plus, there's a reclusive, eccentric woman who has others whispering that she is a real-life witch.

The whole town ends up spooked when the alleged witch is found dead in the graveyard, and everyone at the town's big Halloween party nearby is a suspect. While Sheriff Metzger does his thing, Jessica takes it upon herself to stir through a witches' brew of motives; she even concocts a scary scheme of her own to make sure a guilty ghoul doesn't get away with murder!

Librarian's note #1: there is an earlier MSW series by James Anderson and David Deutsch. Novelizations of TV episodes. The characters, settings, etc. have all been entered for the 4-volume original series: #1, The Murder of Sherlock Holmes (1985); #2, Hooray for Homicide (1985); #3, Lovers and Other Killers (1986); and #4, Murder in Two Acts (1986). But improvements welcome!

Librarian's note #2: the characters, settings, etc. have all been entered for the first 20 books in the current Jessica Fletcher / Donald Bain MSW series. They are #1, Gin & Daggers (1989) with a 2nd edition in (2000); #2, Manhattans & Murder (1994); #3, Rum & Razors (1995); #4, Brandy & Bullets (1995); #5, Martinis & Mayhem (1995); #6, A Deadly Judgment (1996); #7, A Palette for Murder (1996); #8, The Highland Fling Murders (1997); #9, Murder on the QE2 (1997); #10, Murder in Moscow (1998); #11, A Little Yuletide Murder (1998); #12, Murder at the Powderhorn Ranch (1999); #13, Knock 'Em Dead (1999); #14, Trick or Treachery (2000); #15, Blood on the Vine (2001); #16, Murder in a Minor Key (2001); #17, Provence - To Die For (2002); #18, You Bet Your Life (2002); #19, Majoring in Murder (2003), and #20, Destination Murder (2003). But improvements welcome! Needed - a librarian to give the same treatment for #21 and on.

Librarian’s note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

Jessica Fletcher (born Jessica Beatrice MacGill, and writes under the initialed J.B. Fletcher) is a fictional character from the US television series Murder, She Wrote.

In keeping with the spirit of the TV show, a series of official original novels have been written by American ghostwriter Donald Bain and published by the New American Library. The author credit for the novels is shared with the fictitious "Jessica Fletcher." When the first novel in the series, Gin and Daggers, was published in 1989 it included several inaccuracies to the TV series including Jessica driving a car which she could not do as she never learned to drive. Due to fans pointing out the errors, the novel was republished in 2000 with most of the inaccuracies corrected.

When Jessica Fletcher goes to an annual Halloween party in Cabot Cove the town "witch" is found murdered later that night, near the house the party was held. Who could have done it? Jessica does some investigating on her own and helps the police to try to solve the case.

This was the first "Murder She Wrote" book I read and it was just like the show! I had fun trying to find out who the villain was.

It was an entertaining read with interesting characters/suspects, good atmosphere, a séance, murder, and a nice setting...Cabot Cove at Halloween time! I also liked the ending.

A great book to read around Halloween!

This was such an enjoyable and entertaining Halloween mystery. Jessica Fletcher attends a Halloween party and before the night is over, a body is discovered murdered on the premises. This makes all the costumed guests suspects. As Sheriff Mort Metzger begins his investigation into the murder, Jessica can't resist joining in the investigation, as well, offering her assistance.

Cabot Cove was the perfect setting for this Halloween tale. The cast of characters were a lot of fun, including an alleged witch, and a spiritual medium. And then there's The Legend of Cabot Cove, Hepzibah Cabot, whose ghost is said to haunt the cemetery. I enjoyed the small-town atmosphere, cozy setting, gossipy grapevine, and familiar faces. And I thought that the ending was great.

Mood/ Seasonal Reading: Halloween of course! 🎃

I don’t know if it was the setting or the fact that I tend to prefer the older Murder She Wrote books but I loved this one. In fact, my main issue is that I wish it was much longer. There were characters I wanted to spend more time with and scenes I wanted to see. I love how it wrapped up. It felt like a classic Agatha Christie.

One of the better ones in this series.

My deep dark secret - I'm obsessed with watching Murder, She Wrote. In fact, I can't fall asleep without watching an episode on Netflix. You know those bracelets that say WWJD - I think they really stand for What Would Jessica Do. Thought I'd try one of the books just to see if it is as soothing....
Well, it's not horrible but does lose something in the translation from TV show to book.

3 Stars. I was saddened to hear of the death of Angela Lansbury while I was reading this novel. Similar to my feelings with the recent passing of the H.M. the Queen - they were the same age. For both, the end of an era. Lansbury played Jessica Fletcher to perfection on TV in Murder, She Wrote. One of my favourite shows to this day. Entry #14 doesn't hit as high a note as two others, #13 Knock 'Em Dead, and #9 Murder on the QE2. It's well worth a read, but I could discern outlines of the motive for murder through the fog of distraction. It's one of the ways this series is uneven. Cabot Cove does things big, and Jessica always seems to be near the centre. Halloween is the same. Paul Marshall, of Marshall-Scott Clothing headquartered in town, is hosting this year's ghosts and goblins party at his mansion. No expense spared, yet we hear rumours of financial troubles. Two interesting newcomers in town join the mix. There's Matilda Swift living in a small cottage by the cemetery. Some think she's a witch. And Lucas Tremaine, a spirit-world investigator, has arrived with unappreciated flair. A suspicious Jessica even joins one of his seances! Loads of fun. (Oc2022/Se2025)

Trick or Treachery: Book #14- 3.5 stars...

I use to love to watch the Murder She Wrote series on TV but I've never read any of the books until now. I thought it would be fun to revisit the series during our Booklikes Halloween Bingo and see if the books are as good as the show. This book in particular is set during the Halloween season & one of the older versions of this book has a pumpkin on the cover (see below) so it was also perfect for my "Pumpkin" square.

This is a fun story- all of the residents of Cabot Cove attend a Halloween costume party & what fun is a party without a murder. The story also features a ghost -The Legend of Cabot Cove and a visiting psychic.

Overall, it was a nice story to get in the Halloween spirit and it was fun revisiting Cabot Cove and its residents but after reading the book, I still like the TV show more. Each time Jessica visits a neighbor or store etc. on her handy dandy bicycle (If you've seen the show, you know is very frequently) they go through the same niceties over and over again which, in the book it felt too forced. On air, you don't notice it as much or at least I didn't at the time. I also think that the cinematic elements of the TV series make it a lot more suspenseful then the book which I liked. I haven't seen the show in a while though so it may come across differently to me now then it did when I was younger.

I'm not totally going to forgo the book series. There are a couple more I'd like to read but I definitely don't see myself reading all 46 books. I am going to watch some Murder She Wrote reruns though. If you haven't seen the show yet, watch it first!

*I read this for my 2016 Halloween Bingo: ~Pumpkin~ square

Lost in Translation

The beginning of the book kept me mesmerized and then I got to the middle and I became uninterested, I felt as though I had lost something very important a very empty feeling. I took a day off from reading to collect my thoughts on the book and continued to push through and I am so glad I did because the ending was well worth it!! Another great book, kudos to the author.

it's no secret that I adore Murder, She Wrote. It's one of my comfort shows, I want to be J.B. Fletcher when I grow up, etc. etc.
This is my second of the novels, and while I will probably read the others I own at some point, I have issues, lol! The Cabot Cove of the books seems like an entirely different one to the show, and while I recognize that I've seen the entirety of the original show more times than the average person, here are my problems:
a) Jessica absolutely has a green thumb, she talks about her garden all the time
b) "Joshua Peabody Day" is not just mentioned, but shown every other season, why in the world would the theater department not have revolutionary colonist's uniforms? they recreate the Battle of Cabot Cove annually?
c) Seth is routinely part of those reenactments and plays a major role AND was in the military himself, he would absolutely know how to handle a rifle??

Yes these are petty problems and ultimately I'm giving it 3 stars because it's an average cozy mystery. I just have personal beef with it, haha!

Great mystery book

I choose this book because i watch the tv show murder she wrote. I wanted to see if the books were as good as the tv show. I love story line that leads up to who done it. I was able to guess who done by the end of the book. I also love the fact it took place in the and Halloween. If you like to read a mystery book this is the one to read. I will be reading more of these books.

Another fun installment in the Murder She Wrote series. This one involves a Halloween costume party, a potential witch, ghosts and speaking with the dead. Perfect for Halloween!

No worries che tanto crepa.
Come sempre WonderJessica to the rescue anche perché se dobbiamo aspettare Metzger, stemo freschi!

Solite cose, niente di nuovo, lettura leggerissima e piacevole.

Perfect, perfect, perfect!
I can’t believe I didn’t know about the Murder, She Wrote book series! Trick or Treachery was my first experience reading one and it was PERFECTION!
It was the perfect mix of autumn vibes, cozy mystery and 80’s nostalgia. The books in this series will make for a perfect “palette cleanser” between my normal thriller/mystery reads.
Thoughts specific to Trick of Treachery…..
I loved the descriptions and storytelling used to set the scene of Cabot Cove. It’s as though I can hear the leaves crunching under Jessica’s tires as she rides her bike through a leaf pile on her way to Mara’s Luncheonette! There are LOTS of characters introduced in the story, so my version of character mapping came in handy keeping each one and their backstory straight. The story itself was a lot of fun! Keeps you guessing who the murderer is until the final pages of the book!
I have already ordered seven other books from the series and will be reading the Thanksgiving book next month!

READING AS: physical book 📕

CURRENT PROGRESS: finished ✅

STAR RATING: 2.25/5⭐️

OVERALL THOUGHTS:📖
The stars I give this book are for readability only. Pro: it's a mass-market paperback, and I can tear through these buck-o's like nobody's business. Con: it's a mass-market paperback, and it SHOWS. First, this book lacks a competent editor. Within the first chapter of the book, we are introduced to Jessica Fletcher, a small-town gal who writes mystery novels, on a cemetery tour in the days leading up to Halloween. There's an aside by Jessica that Halloween "is just two days away." Jessica then leaves the tour, goes through her daily chores, and returns home to go to sleep. Upon waking up the next morning, she takes a call from an acquaintance, who remarks, "Oh yeah, Halloween is a few days away!" However, according to our pre-established timeline, Halloween is literally tomorrow. Who would say it's "a few days away" if it's October 30th, and Halloween is literally tomorrow? A competent editor would have caught this, no? So, it's abundantly obvious that this whole book was just shot out into the world without much of a editor's review, as many mass-market paperbacks regrettably are. Another gripe: I feel that this book is very much written for individuals who have already watched the show and are familiar with the characters. I am not one of these individuals, so I didn't have that buy-in. Luckily, the author repeats the full name and profession of who each character is every time they appear in the story, so it wasn't hard as a non-watcher to follow along. (However, this is a bit of poor writing, for what it's worth.) The audience of this book is certainly WASP-y, East Coast women who eat up all the episodes of this show. Again, that's not me. Overall, the ending was frustrating in its introduction of a paranormal element. At the end of the book, Jessica takes it upon herself to discredit Mr. Tremaine as a fraud after attending his seances, but then he turns out to be correct about "The Legend" appearing on Halloween night... However, Jessica never clears his name and just leaves this man in financial and social ruin. WTF? Also, if I have to read "scuttlebutt" one more time... Overall, your grandma and/or religious watchers of "Murder She Wrote" may enjoy this one. Critical readers, stay far away.

Sweet, old-fashioned story with an honest, good-natured character that takes you to the cozy place and leaves you in a blissful state. Sometimes that's exactly what a reader needs. And it is not that common for a book to meet that expectation. This one did.

I enjoyed it until the last 25ish pages when Jessica finds a letter that more or less tells her exactly who the murderer is. No real chance for the reader to try and work it out on their own, which is usually my favorite part of the MSW experience. This person wasn’t even really on the radar until the letter conveniently laid out an entirely unknown motive.

I really enjoyed this one a lot. Halloween is my season and Murder, She Wrote my jam so this is the perfect book for me.
Especially the ending hit home.

Only one downside: Mort Metzger's wife is called Adele! No clue why they changed her name in this book

I had read on a blog that this cozy mystery series was profanity free. I was quite disappointed to find at halfway it's peppered with foul language! I think at one moment or another we all new what profanity was; but it seems that over time even that has become subjective.
