“C’era una vecchia signora che aveva ingoiato una mosca. E un ragno. E un uccello. E un gatto…..”. Scorrendo le pagine, come ai raggi x puoi scorgere il contenuto dello stomaco della vecchia signora… e scoprire alla fine cosa le capiterà. una “perfetta delizia tipografica”, che prende le mosse da una filastrocca per bambini, molto conosciuta negli Stati Uniti.
I thought it was a funny book and i think that it is very funny that she says she swallowed all these animals that are like really dangerous. Serafina - age 8
Holmes' Old Lady is a visual feast for any reader, but it seems like a book that may be appreciated more by adults than by children. The book is designed to be an old lady with vintage flair, and her body makes up the pages in which the action takes place. Visually this is highly effective as an art book, but it also makes the pages 1/3 the size of the piece, meaning that it is a lap-book or by-myself-book only. Readers will love the collage-like images of the animals, and younger readers will examine the pages in great detail to find clues to the ultimate fate of each previously eaten animal. The final pull-tab effect creates a nice ending touch for the book, but is delicate, so younger readers may damage it quickly. For a better book, check out Simms Taback's There Was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Fly; for better artwork, make sure to pick up a copy of this treasure. Story for 5-8; Artwork for all ages.
There was an old lady who swallowed a fly... then a bird... then a cat... then a dog... then a snake... then a cow... and finally, a horse. Do you know what happened to her? Of course you do!
But with his distinct art style and a clever format, acclaimed graphic designer Jeremy Holmes has given the universal rhyme a unique makeover that is clever, funny, and unexpected.
This book shows how creative Jeremy Holmes is. Like it.
An extremely clever, artsy version of the traditional children's folksong. The text pages consist of the middle portion of the book with the old lady's face fixed at the top. When she swallows the horse and the reader turns the last page, her eyes close. Too cool! My absolute favorite edition, but the art work is probably best appreciated by an intermediate (3rd/4th) grade student.
This book is a great book becasue it takes more of a scientific approach to where the animal goes when it gets swallowed. Also I could use this book to explain a food chain to my students because that is why she eats all the animals. I could use this book for grades 2nd to 4th grades.
