Two strangers—one warm and human, the other deadly and craving—become pawns in an all-out vampire war as this series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Nightwalkers saga heats up.

As an energy vampire, Halo enjoys the chase for human blood—if it’s pure and consensual. But Halo goes from hunter to hunted when he is knocked unconscious and taken hostage by vicious sycophants. As he comes to, he realizes that he’s naked, starving, and trapped in a sealed room. With him is a deliciously human female, tempting him to feed—except her blood is heady with the scent of poisonous drugs. Never has nourishment been so near, yet so far . . . and it’s all part of the sycophants’ sick game.

The last thing Felice Mendoza remembers is everything going black. She awakens stripped, drugged, exposed, and alone—with a vampire. Halo is at once savage and tender, terrifying and alluring. Felice senses that her only chance to escape depends upon his survival. Given the choice between Halo and his enemies, Felice surrenders to his ravenous hunger. It’s a calculated risk—and a delirious pleasure. As Felice is ushered into a world as dangerous as it is desirable, their fight for deliverance is only the beginning.

Wow… this was a mess. I’m sorry to have to say that. I really am but… wow. I had to FORCE myself to finish this one. I probably should have just called it and relegated this to the DNF list but I rallied and kept going to the bitter end. I think perhaps there were some cool concepts that could have been shaped into something good. However, Hunger just never comes together into anything interesting.

On the other hand, Hunger would make for wonderful source material for a drinking game.
Here are the rules:
1. Drink every time Halo says he’s a “hedonist”.
2. Drink every time Halo says he doesn’t need anyone.
3. Drink every time Felice disregards all evidence and acts like an idiot…

Wait… never mind. If these were the rules for the drinking game then everyone would be shitfaced by approximately 30% through the book. It’s that damn repetitive.

Here’s the gist of the plot: Halo (an energy vampire) and Felice (a human with lousy taste in men) are being held prisoner - naked - in a warehouse by the bad guy, Roth. I guess energy vampires can only feed on “clean” sources or they turn evil. So the plan is to force heroin into Felice’s veins and starve Halo long enough to make him feed on her and turn him evil. Once he’s evil Roth and the other evil vampires will set him loose to kill the vampire Queen. However, Halo is all extra strong and escapes along with Felice. The bad guys get defeated and Halo and Felice are in love for a HEA.

I could go on and on about all the problems with Hunger but instead I think I’ll just give a list of all the notes I made while reading because I think they’re pretty entertaining. THERE WILL BE OUT OF CONTEXT SPOILERS BELOW :
1. Felice! Seriously? You’ve been taken prisoner, drugged, and left naked and alone with a strange man and you’re worried about whether or not you look fat? SERIOUSLY!?

2. Halo’s “hedonistic” lifestyle has been mentioned at least 20 times and it’s only chapter 2. We freaking get it already…

3. So far I’ve just been told about how these characters are instead of actually seeing the characters be that way. Also, their personalities are just all over the place. Holy mood swings Batman! One minute Halo is calling Felice sweetheart and the next he’s being a complete asshole.

4. Is this whole book a commercial against GMOs disguised as a paranormal romance?

5. O my goodness we get it! Halo likes human women! Most vampires just think of humans as food so I suppose Halo likes to “play with his food.” Ha! That was clever… too bad the author didn’t think of it.

6. Felice… you are so naïve it’s unbelievable.

7. Seriously… you guys are going to bang in room you’re being held captive in? I don’t see how the situation is at all sexy…?

8.
“Good. Because I am ready to fuck you. And you are primed for the fucking.”

That’s actually pretty funny… I’m not sure if it was on purpose or not.

9. Really Halo! You’re trying to bang her while Felice is shot and bleeding? Put your boner away! Now is not the fucking time! She’s also been bleeding for a couple hours now and hasn’t lost consciousness or anything… how is that even possible?

10. Felice… Halo has been the biggest jerk in the world to you for weeks now. I know you “love” him for some reason but it doesn’t excuse his behavior in the least. This naïve bullshit is obnoxious.

So ya… Hunger was such a mess. I just couldn’t make myself like it. I feel terrible being so negative in this review. I think it’s stemming from the book being pretty poor in quality and me having to force myself to read it. It’s just leaving a bad taste in my mouth and causing a lot of resentment. I’m going to try to end this review on one positive note… The cover art is pretty good. So there’s that at least…

I've been a fan of this authors work since I picked up Jacob about five years ago and her lyrical prose simply enchanted me. The world building, the creativity and imagination to craft an overall plot that would connect numerous books and more than one series still if I think about it blows my mind. Yet I'm like many who have occasionally been dissatisfied with certain books as they haven't lived up to the glorious offerings of previous work. I read the first in this series Thirst and much as I liked the idea the authors execution didn't wow me. However as it introduced Halo ( my favourite character from that book ) I knew I'd want to read this to see if the author had got into her stride.
Halo is the quintessential bad boy of his world, hard, fast living and deadly. Always bucking the norm and definitely a male who loves women even human ones! Halo is a hunter who never misses as he never gives up but this time he took his eye off the ball and now he will pay the price.
Felice wakes up alone, locked in a room and naked with no recollection of how she got there. Then she's drugged and taken to a room containing an equally naked male who starts pushing all her buttons! He's rude, happily obnoxious and clearly a horn dog but as he's her only ally Felice has no choice but to trust him.
Hmm well the good news is I preferred this to the first book as it didn't continually drag out the clean living concept which incidentally I do think works well here as it taps into recent ideologies. I actually wanted to bang both leads over the head at times as Felice clearly has bad taste in men and honestly hasn't learned. Halo if he told Felice once about his wild lifestyle he did it what felt like a thousand times. Yes we get it Halo believes he is a total stud who doesn't deserve or perhaps even want to settle down. Yet I enjoyed their verbal standoffs, I really quite liked the dialogue that kept this couple going round in circles. I wanted things to move along as they are alone for a lot of the story which made for some cringe worthy moments but no spoilers. Of course they survive but not without getting hurt and that's when Halo gets so possessive and downright horny ! I understand that Halo saves Felice but after everything she's gone through, all that she's learned in the past she's still desperate to feed him? Sheesh woman want him by all means, love him too because yes I understand the deep connection you've forged but please understand that being bitten hurts!
There's a little explanation about the origins of these vampires which ok I can go with. Yes I've read the previous book but honestly even if I hadn't I would be able to follow this story easily so yes it I think could work as a standalone. My biggest gripe is the endless time they spent locked up together it just needed perhaps a different pace. I did overall enjoy this story and I like that it's a series that still has legs. Although perhaps I should point out that Halo is quite fond of the F word but as we are hopefully all adults perhaps no one will object.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Halo is a hunter, one of the best. He lives life fast, loose and with few, if any rules. Love ‘em, feed from them and leave ‘em, no strings and he is gone. Felice is a strong and warm- hearted woman who has chosen poorly in love. They are strangers, but when both are captured and forced to be together, both Hao and Felice play a dangerous game of attraction under the scrutiny of the unseen enemy. The plan was to use Felice to poison Halo with tainted energy, will he fall to the machinations of a twisted sycophant’s plan?

Jacquelyn Frank’s HUNGER is the second book in her Energy Vampires series and while the synopsis promises so much intrigue and action, the presentation fell flat for me. How could two naked prisoners not catch one’s attention, especially when one is a vampire? These two damaged souls are most definitely attracted to each other, but both of them have baggage, both of them have issues and those issues were repeated over and over again, almost to the point of eye-rolling.
I was disappointed in the flat main characters, but did delight in the supporting characters that came over halfway through this paranormal tale. Slow on action, low on intrigue and pretty tame on the romance that never seems to be as magical as it could have been from an author who usually delivers in spades.

Halo lives his life full tilt with a ton of women in his wake. When he is captured he is forced to share his captivity with Felice, a person who has made some really bad love connections.

Their captors want to poison Halo with “tainted” energy from Felice so that is why they are imprisoned naked together. Damaged souls, imprisoned and naked…can it get any worse?

Hunger has a great premise but after reading this, the second book in this series, I’m not thinking this series is for me. Like I said the premise is there but zero reader connection because I just couldn’t buy into the situation(s) presented with a slow progression as well. Overall, it just fell flat, somewhere in between an Okay to kind of like it for me so I’m giving it 2.5.

I received this ARC copy of Hunger from Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept. This is my honest and voluntary review. Hunger is set for publication August 8, 2017.

This storyline has so much potential. I love the idea of energy vampires and their origin, but I felt that the story fell short in delivering in the chemistry between the protagonists.
The story was okay but predictable.
I'm sad because I really enjoyed this author's previous work, but unfortunately, this book just didn't connect with me.

It has been a while since I read the last book by Jacquelyn Frank, but still she is one of those authors where after the first few pages you feel like coming home. I was really happy to receive “Hunger” the latest book in the Energy Vampire series for review. It only took me a day and half the night #snicker and I was already done with it. As the Blurb is not yet public it seems my review will be not to deep into the plot.
Mrs. Frank created an interesting setting from page one by throwing the reader into a scene where not only the leading characters but also the reader were at a loss of what had happened and that made the whole thing a lot more interesting. It was easy to get into the story when you are used to the extremely developed worlds this author creates.

I did not read the first book in the series but I read other books from her so I knew what to expect and she did not disappoint. If you want you can read this book as a standalone like I did but I think reading the first book before this would bring def. a little more light into some things in the background of some secondary characters of this novel.

Well I really liked the dynamics of the characters but still I am not able to give the full star rating because I could not involve myself emotionally in the way I would need to give 5 stars. Especially towards the end I had some issues with the female lead. I would have liked it a little better if the male lead would have had more issues with the decisions he made.

The way it was told the whole load of the relationship ended on the shoulders of the female lead and that did not suit the set up of this strong lead. Anyway I am sure lovers of this author will devour this book and love it – so enjoy.

The referencing of "her jiggly bits" the author kept doing was hella annoying.

Additionally, I really could not fathom why he was "rendering rifles useless" by bending the nozzles and flinging them away instead of just using the guns on his attackers. Fistfights are for movies and mostly as a fight scene affectation. I'm not sure why the book needed one.

Also is Jacquelyn Frank using a ghost writer? Her books have lost a lot of their depth, the deft hand with language and even the dialogue is sub par these days.

It's like the latter years of tortuously bad books by Lynsay Sands, with the painful writing style, dick characters, insta love and illogical plots.

I really needed saving sometimes trying to get through reading this. I mean puh-lease at some of these cheesy lines!

... ... “It occupied him long enough to allow Halo to use martial arts to stun him the rest of the way. He was well trained in all kinds of styles, having devoted nearly a decade to the learning process, a time when he had done nothing but immerse himself in the arts. He had even trained in the classes of the late and great Bruce Lee. He called on his knowledge of those classes now.”

So yah, on top of everything else I'm guessing he's a black belt? And really, are we pausing for a paragraph of exposition on his Ninja Training With Monks (sarcastically used phrase) in the middle of ye olde play by play action scene? Arghhh!

So... Hmm, where to start? This one was okay. I have read books by this author that I really liked, then some that I kept waiting for the action to start. This one happened to fall in the second category.

i like the idea. The way the story is it is very dependent on dialogue to keep things going, and sex too. The dialogue to me would have been okay for a story where it wasn't the only thing keeping the story going, but here I feel it needed to be more complex and consistent to the characters. It starts with a man vamp and a human woman kidnapped and trapped together... Oh and they're naked too. No clothes, no sheets, and only a narrow window in which to gauge time and days past. There is starving evamp, and tainted girl. Tainted girl could mean bad bad things for vamp should he lose his control and feed on her heroine tainted energy. Yes, it is one of those, there's lots of cheesy goin' on here.

I feel the the characters fell a bit flat. They didn't seem real, they seemed cookie cutter and convenient to me. I wanted more layers. The woman kinda got on my nerves. The male was mean at times and was forgiven too easily making the woman seem desperate.

i do so like the idea of energy vamps. I like the idea of their history but wish the topic was more explored and more detailed.

Hunger is the second book in the newest vampire series by Frank. Now every book I  have read from this author has been pretty wonderful, and Hunger was no different, I absolutely fell in love with this book and these "Energy vampires". In Hunger we have a story where both our hero and our heroine wake up having been drugged, kidnapped and naked and forced in the same room together. Halo, our hero of the story, is one of the strongest of their kind. He is an energy vampire, he is trapped in a room with a beautiful and spirited human female whose blood has been tainted and is forbidden for him and he has two choices: Find a way to escape and figure out why he has been taken prisoner or feed on Felice and break one of the most supreme laws of their people. Halo is a man of honor, he may enjoy feeding, but he also upholds the laws of their people. Halo finds that he is drawn to Felice. There is something unique about her, and he needs to figure out why she was picked to be stuck in a room with him. Little chance that its just coincidence. Felice has no clue about energy vampires, but she soon learns of their world and Halo's place in it. Felice has had to deal with a stalker ex boyfriend, move to a new state and make a new life for herself and now she is drawn into a world of the supernatural and where there is danger around the corner.

Hunger was a fabulous story that I didn't want to set aside, I was drawn to these characters and seeing the way they fight their way out of their predicament and the interesting way they end up falling for each other. Halo and Felice are from two different worlds. Felice is a young woman that is a fighter, but she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She is philosophical at times, she looks at life with a "glass half full", she tends to be a positive thinker. Where our hero is a badass fighter, bad boy to the extreme, one of the strongest and most elite of his kind and doesn't have serious relationships with women, especially not intimate ones. I found the dynamics of their relationship fascinating. Seeing how different they are from each other, and the way they balance each other out. I just loved that, while I was reading this story, the whole Chinese term "yin-yang" kept running through my mind. Because Halo and Felice definitely fit the bill for that. They are so different in so many ways, but they also compliment each other in the right ways.

This world that Jacquelyn Frank has created swept me up pretty quickly in the story, and I was so intrigued by this idea of Energy Vampires. Basically these type of vampires feed off the energy of humans, but only humans that are sweet and clean and healthy. It was a bit different from the regular vampire idea, but still very close to the idea. Only there is no holy water, no mirrors or any myths like that. So I found the world building in this story quite refreshing for a vampire read. I always love it when an author gets a bit creative but still stays true a bit to the actual myths. And I wasn't surprised with how this author handled this story and the world building that takes place. She does like to write those unique paranormal romances that keeps you on edge and she definitely succeeded. Now I know that I need to go pick up Thirst (the first book) because I was so intrigued by Rafe and need to read his book.

Overall Hunger is a romance that you don't want to miss out on if you love plenty of danger, intrigue, a sexy vampire, a fighting heroine and a love story that wins your heart!

In Hunger: An Energy Vampire Novel, we get to know Halo. He finds himself kidnapped and and taken hostage. He doesn’t know why he’s been taken or why he is still alive. But he does know that he only has a few days of energy left before he has to feed again.

Felice finds herself in a similar situation. But she is human. She is poisoned and given to Halo to feed off of.

This book is different from the first installment. About the first 60 percent of the book takes place in a room where Halo and Felice are forced to get to know each other. This is a great way for us to figure out what these characters were made of. I really liked Halo’s never give up style and he was able to get strength from Felice. Felice is smart and puts up a great front to show how much strength she really has. I also think that helped Halo really see the people who were already around him and that he isn’t alone in the world.

This story also had a good mystery to it. I really liked how all was revealed in the end. I also liked that we are getting see what are the real motives of the phants are and that there might be a power struggle starting with them.

I really didn't care much for the first book in this series, but I wanted to keep giving it a try because some of my absolute favorite books are by this author. But so are some of my least favorite...and this falls into that category. I was bored out of my mind and I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes or wanted to bang my head against a wall. So many things kept being repeated and nothing happens !

I did not like Felice at all. She was annoying as hell, a brat, and preachy as fuck. She didn't shut up and she kept telling Halo what he wanted/felt/thought...you name it, she knew best. But worst of all, was her reaction to Halo. Who in their right mind gets turned on and wants to have sex with a guy they just met while they're both naked and LOCKED UP as well as being WATCHED!?!? That was so freakin' ridiculous. Yeah, okay, Halo was hot and nice to look at. But come on! You are locked up with this guy you have never met, held prisoner by someone you don't know, for a reason you have no idea of, and all you can think about is sleeping with your fellow prisoner? And when you think nobody is watching, you do? Give me a break. Then when she finds out about the vampire world, she refuses to let them wipe her memories. Like she's got a damn choice! Then, when she finds out that they let humans that are useful know and remember, she wants to prove she can. Dude. You own an antique shop and have no connections to anyone. What in the world could you possibly offer them?

As for Halo, with the little we got of him in the first book, I liked him. And I still do. He is such a cocky asshole, but a realistic one who didn't sugar coat things and enjoyed his life the way it was. No connections, quick lays, a few drinks, and some good hunting. Which is why I don't buy for a single second his falling in love with Felice. Hell, I don't buy hers either considering the way he treated her. Their relationship felt contrived and forced to me.

So yeah. Halo was hunting the bad vampire from the first story when he let his guard down and got caught instead. Waking up to find himself naked and locked in a room. He finds out he's not the only one they have prisoner, and soon is locked up with naked woman. For literally half the book, the two of them are trapped together. During which time they talk, they argue (a lot), and eventually screw. Because totally appropriate time for that. Before putting the two of them together, they injected Felice with heroin to poison Halo's only food source. They have big plans for him and first they need to make him a rouge. They didn't count on his strength of will to resist feeding from her. Finally the opportunity for their escape presents itself and Halo does what he has to do. After fighting the enemies off, he doesn't even have the energy to stand. So he takes it from Felice, determined not to let the feeling consume him. He will get home, and he will get clean.

After their escape, Halo does maintain control of himself despite the poison now flowing thru him. On their way out, Felice got shot so he takes her to vampire central for help and for safety. But even her having a bullet lodged in her doesn't stop the two of them from wanting to screw...in an elevator. Really people? Anyway. While Felice is getting medical attention, Halo goes off to find out why she was also taken and talk to the queen. Later while he's gone, an explosion goes off there and they finally find out Felice's roll in the whole thing while investigating that. In the end, Halo gets his mark and also the one who set Felice up. I still don't think Halo made the right choice with one thing he did though. Now that she's safe, Halo intends to walk away from her. And that's exactly what he does. But Felice is a petulant child on a mission and she chases after him. Getting what she wants in the end.

I have a good idea who the next book will be about. But gawd, I don't know if I want to read it. These two have killed me with how boring they were...but I'm always a hopeful fool that things might get better. Especially when the author has other great books that I really enjoyed. I guess we'll see.

Hunger, The Energy Vampires Book Two, Jacquelyn Frank

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Sci-fi and fantasy.

I really wanted to like this, I love the vampire romance genre but...it wasn't to be.

I found it really dragged, with the first half covering Halo and Felice in captivity. Just the two of them talking, arguing, bickering with occasional voice overs from the captors, that's all it was. Halo wants to know why he and Felice were taken, thinks he can guess at who's behind it but has no idea where Felice fits in.
Frankly by the time I'd got to halfway and they'd finally managed to escape ( I think its about 55% they make it out) I didn't care who took them and why, I was tired of the plot, tired of the characters and just wanted it to go somewhere. At 25% I was amazed they were still improisoned and started flicking forward to see if that was going to be the whole story or if they would ever breakout...
When they finally escaped and met back with the others I still didn't really feel the story was going anywhere. I wasn't convinced of the love between him and Felice, and had lost heart for the whole story.

It felt unreal to me, I know its fantasy but for me the plots and characters have to feel as if they could happen if the setting was real life. It didn't.
I just didn't feel anything for either Halo or Felice, we knew so little about them really, and what did come out didn't make me like them. I think that first half with all its eternal talking everything to death, bickering and Felice's constant changing her mind spoiled it for me. Then would anyone really get the hots for a total stranger when you've been captured, stripped and imprisoned with him? Surely panic and anger would be more likely, not steamy make out sessions knowing the cameras are watching...

Ah well, you win some you lose some, and this was in the lose column for me. Doesn't mean you wont like it, I've loved stories others have 1 and 2 starred, we all want different things to read, have different triggers and things we enjoy in a story.

Stars: Two, novel that just didn't work for me, that I felt was going nowhere for far too long.

Although I haven't read book one, Thirst, I had little trouble understanding this book. I did, however, struggle with the pace of the story.

Halo is a hunter who works for the energy vampires, he's a loner and walks a fine line of rebellion in his decadent lifestyle. One evening he goes to his usual nightspot, but awakens in a sparsely furnished room with no clothing and no memory of how he got there. On the tv is a naked woman in an identical room. He watches as the woman is drugged, then he is gassed. When he awakens, the woman is in his room, but her energy is tainted, drugged with heroin. If he feeds from her, he risks becoming a sycophant, an addict, the very thing he hunts.

The first third or more of the story is spent largely in verbal sparring and bickering between the two captives. Then they move on to conversing and ultimately to more sensual past times. About halfway through, the storyline picks up, but by then I was into skip and skim mode. I never felt a connection to the characters, nor became invested in the overarching storyline. This was a huge disappointment to me as this author has penned one of my favorite books, one that remains on my re-read list. Unfortunately, this book didn't meet that standard.

This is a voluntary review of a prerelease copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own.

I've read a couple of books of this author and she was always one of my favourites. However, this book felt disappointingly lacking.

This book is about Halo and Felice. Halo is an energy vampire, a hunter who fights vampires that live off of tainted energy by drinking from addicts, for a high. They are dangerous as they risk exposing the vampire nation on the chase for the next high.
Felice is on the run from her ex.
Both seem to have nothing in common when they find themselves naked in a room, not knowing who kidnapped them and why. So far, so good. The story is interesting, but sadly the characters are not able to draw you in.

The constant back and forth about the same thoughts over the course of multiple chapters is tiring. There are 20 chapters in total, in chapter 9 there is finally some action starting. The two are getting closer, which is kind of inevitable, and start plotting how to escape. By chapter 13 they finally act on the escape plan. There is no real up and down in the story line, there is no tension to speak of and too much filler description.

It was just ok. My first love will always be vampires. I really liked the idea behind these vampires and well more like aliens than vampires but still considered vampires. The term used for them was eye roll worthy to me tho (e-vamp) I did like the energy vampires idea just not the kinda silly name.
Something else that did not work for me at all was the characters, neither Halo nor Felice were likable to me. Halo was too much of a jerk to be book boyfriend material and Felice was weak and clingy. Something else that bothered me throughout the whole story was the dialogue. They barely knew each other and he was already saying FU sister and just bad awful language and dialogue. There is one steamy scene and that's like the only redeemable part of this whole story. The second scene all the way at the end did nothing, I would have preferred less talking (dialogue during sex scene) and more details and describing. It wasn't awful and I'm sure others will like the story, unfortunately this one did not work for me.

I have read from Jacquelyn Frank before, her NightWalkers Series is personally one of my favorites! But Hunger fell a bit flat for me personally. Their was no connection between Halo and Felice, which was sadly disappointing, because the storyline was brilliant.

Halo is a Vampire Hunter, best in the business until the HUNTER becomes the HUNTED. He is trapped and must find a way out before its too late. But meets a female along the way that is his undoing.... Felice. This human female has no idea of what lurks in the shadows. These two form a unique bond that makes Halo very protective of this young girl and will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Together they must find a way to escape this hell hole.

Other than the lack of connection between Halo and Felice, I did enjoy this story.
Very unique from the other PNR novels out there, lot's of action, steam, and of course a love story.
Really excited to see what is in store with the next book.

Thank you Netgalley for giving me this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is series is an interesting take on vampires, it has all the brooding, sexiness of blood sucking vamp novels but these are energy vamps. Just as deadly but with a twist.

I'm enjoying this world and this novel was...good...I liked the characters overall and the storyline was fresh. That being said it was slow. Too much time in the "room" and a bit too much angst from the hero for me. I did like the strength the heroine showed when going after what she wanted but my favorite bits were with Danton..and I can't wait for his story. ..

I think overall the story could have been stronger, there felt like a lot of filler and with a bit more edits this could have been crafted into one of her best.

3 stars from this lover of all things vamp.

2.5 - 3.0 ***

It took me nearly 2 weeks to read this book. This is the second book of the Energy Vampire series. I had trouble getting through the first book. I wanted to give the series a decent chance. I just can't seem to get into aliens that were hit by lightening as they crash landed and are now e-vamps that have to suck the energy from humans by biting the back of the neck. Nope, doesn't do it for me.

Plus, it's one of those books that the H is a jerk and keeps rejecting the h but the h doesn't give up and keeps throwing herself at the H until he gives in. I have to SMH at books like this. Any decent self respecting woman would run from that type of man. At least this wasn't like the first book with pages and pages romanticizing the attributes of raw vegetables and 'clean eating'. Gawd, all I could think of reading the first book was that I needed a cookie.

This is the second book in The Energy Vampire series. I was not as invested in this book as I was in book one. I am disappointed because I was so looking forward to this second book.

I have to say I liked the idea of story, but it dragged in spots with redundant information repeated throughout. I feel the book could have been shorter without all repeats. I also felt that the first half of the book needed more action. There was a lot of dialog and I had a hard time staying engaged. I did enjoy the push and pull between the characters; the banter was entertaining. Things didn’t pick up until the second half. I also wasn’t as attached to the characters as I was in book one.

I really wanted to love this, but it was just okay.

Super hot vampires! Hooks you in right away as the author sets the tone for the book. This one is even better than the first in the Energy Vampires series. Halo may just be my new favorite vampire. He gives off a sexy vibe that females can't resist. When he meets Felice, he has protective feelings for her. I love this new world Ms. Frank has created. Scorching paranormal romance is on display here and readers will love this.

I love stories by Ms Frank, but this series is not my favorite, sometimes I just couldn't grasp the energy vampire storyline. I did like the characters of Halo and Felice and felt for them when in captivity. The story is good, but to me it seemed to be missing something.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 8, 2017

•••••••••

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--HUNGER is the second installment in Jacquelyn Frank’s contemporary, adult THE ENERGY VAMPIRES paranormal, romance series. This is energy vampire and hunter Halo, and antiques dealer Felice Mendoza’s story line.

SOME BACKGROUND: Energy vampires are aliens, descended to earth years before, who soak up their nourishment from the sun, and feed off the energy (not blood) of humans who are pure in body and spirit. Those e-vampires who cross to the dark side, getting their nourishment from the energy of impure humans, become known as sycophants. The energy vampires have been pulled into a war where the ultimate target is the Queen of the vampires, and all that she rules.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Halo and Felice) HUNGER follows two strangers-one human female and one e-vampire male-who find themselves imprisoned by an unknown jailer. Not only is Felice Mendoza unaware of the existence of the supernatural but our heroine is ‘drugged’ in an effort to force a starving Halo to turn to the dark side. What ensues is the building but forbidden relationship between Halo and Felice as they struggle to break free of their captors, and the fall out when Halo walks away from the woman with whom he has fallen in love. A good portion of the story line takes place in a secure room (cell) where our couple struggle to stay one step ahead of an unknown threat to their safety and lives

HUNGER and the Energy Vampires is a different kind of vampire series in that the vampires feed off energy and not blood. Humans are considered cattle; fodder and food at an all you can eat open restaurant; and it is forbidden to allow a human to know about the vampire’s existence-memory wiping is a frequent threat against our story line heroine. Impure energy, such as that from addicts, alcoholics and the like, will eventually turn the energy vampire into a sycophant-a self serving, vampire addict who is all about the next fix or high.

Saying that, although the concept is intriguing, the series failed to pull me in due to the less than positive treatment and consideration of humans. It’s not that I believe the humans should be treated as royalty but it is the way in which the author designed the series, and has the characters justify their misconduct towards humans. In the end, the energy vampires are snobs and bigots; reverse ‘specieism’ as it pertains to their earthly hosts; supernatural supremacists who care little for the humans from whom they feed and use. I think, if the author had presented her characters with a little less vitriol and venom towards their human counterparts I would have had more empathy for the story line characters. Perhaps it was the constant and continuous reminders (memory wiping/ bigotry) that lessened my enjoyment of the story line.

There is some great back and forth banter between our leading couple. Felice is a strong heroine who has fallen for the brooding and maddening vampire-she sees something in Halo that others have failed to accept. Halo is a hunter of the sycophant-and in this his duty is to the Queen, and not to fall in love with a human female. The series premise and story line is interesting in its’ concept but lost something in its’ presentation; the characters are colorful; the romance struggles with too many preconceived notions but there is a definite spark between our leading couple.

Hunger is the second novel in Jacquelyn Frank's Energy Vampires series. I read and gave the first novel in the series, Thirst, a 5-star rating and was looking forward to reading this one, but sadly, it simply wasn't as good a read as I had hoped, it had too many flaws, and I can only give it 3 stars.

In Hunger, Halo, an energy vampire, heavy drinker and self-admitted womanizer, wakes up alone in a cell of a room without a way out. He's naked, has clearly been drugged, is more than a bit groggy, and has no memory of how he got there. There are cameras in every corner near the high ceiling, there's a TV, a bed and a chair. When he turns on the TV, he can see a naked woman in an identical room, and when he learns that he can communicate with her through the TV, he learns that her name is Felice, and that she too has been drugged and has no idea how she got there. The next thing either character knows is that they've been drugged again and are now still naked, but are now together in the same room. Their conversation and interactions fully take up the first 25% of this novel, which meant there was no forward momentum to this story until they manage to find a way out.

If, like me, you've read the first book in the series, you already know a lot about what these two characters are discussing, and unfortunately, they are attracted to one another. I could understand Halo's attraction to the curvy Felice, but if I was locked in a room naked with an admittedly hungry vampire, the last thing I'd be worried about is whether or not he thought I was fat. Further, I doubt I'd be getting up close and personal with that vampire knowing I was being watched. Another problem I had was although Halo is described as quite a hottie, none of Halo's swagger, his cocky attitude or his foul mouth are a turn-off to Felice. Halo is a hunter, he hunts and kills energy vampires, called sycophants, who feed off unclean sources, and he has no personal attachments to anyone. He believes that it's the sycophants who drugged and trapped him. Felice believes that they're in this situation because of her abusive ex-husband, who has been stalking her. Either way, they need to escape.

If this is the first novel in the series you've read, you already know that lawful energy vampires need to feed off clean sources--humans who don't use drugs, smoke cigarettes, drink to excess or eat junk food. The fact that Felice has been injected with heroin makes her an unclean source for Halo. There are small windows up near the ceiling and energy vamps can feed off solar energy, but only if the light hits them, and in this cell it doesn't. They clearly need to escape but will they find a way out before Halo needs to feed? Will they figure out who put them in this situation and why? Will they act on their mutual attraction? They certainly have chemistry in common, if nothing else.

The latter half of the novel offers far more in the way of setting, action, sex and violence, as well as more background information on the structure of energy vampire society, but I didn't find myself as intrigued by these characters, or as sympathetic to their relationship as I did with those in the first novel, and since I already knew how energy vampire society was structured, there weren't any new revelations for this reader.

I found Felice to be too naive and timid at first, and I then found her turnabout and tenacity about wanting to maintain a relationship with Halo stretched my willing suspension of disbelief a bit too far. I also wasn't terribly impressed by Halo, who does try to be kind to Felice one minute, then goes back to being crass and vulgar the next. Why Felice found she wanted more of that treatment was beyond me. Yes, Halo could certainly offer her hot sex, but although Ms. Frank can certainly write steamy sex scenes, what I felt was lacking throughout was a real sense of any deep emotional connection between these two, and while Felice tries to establish that, Halo tries to ignore it and his lack of self-knowledge, especially considering that he's hundreds of years old, just didn't make much sense.

While I really like the premise of this series and the world of energy vampires created by this author to be original, inventive and intriguing, this novel simply didn't meet the the high expectations I had after reading the first novel. While Hunger can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading this series in the order it was written. I do hope that the next novel in the series will be less problematic than this one.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

Jacquelyn Frank has written an intriguing story with a different sort of vampire, of two people - one human, one vampire held in captivity, with nothing to depend upon but each other and their wits.

I have to admit I had misgivings when I started reading Hunger. I was wondering how Ms Frank was going to keep the story interesting and the pace of the story engaging while Halo and Felice were essentially locked in a room together for the better part of the book while trying to figure a way out. Ms Frank surprised me by keeping the pacing tight, the dialogue snappy and the action engaging. It's quite a feat considering for more than 50% of the book Halo and Felice were trapped together in a room, naked and vulnerable. I could not turn the pages fast enough to see what was going to happen next.

Let's face it. Halo is a jerk. He's the best hunter the vampire nation has and he's capable and resourceful, but he's a class A jerk. He has built up so many defenses around his heart that he maintains a hedonistic lifestyle in order to keep everyone at arm's length. To protect himself, to protect others, and then comes Felice. It takes Felice to ding underneath his fascade to reveal that beneath his blunt, rather crude exterior is a man who cares deeply, who doesn't want the chance of getting hurt and who is protecting his heart at all costs. In spite of how much a jerk he is, I liked Halo a lot. He's honest with those around him and he's honest with Felice. Of course, he's so direct and straight-talking that he almost comes across as being crass, but one needs to look beneath the surface with Halo to see the man.

"Halo was very up front about being a jerk. He didn’t try to hide it. He didn’t try to excuse his behavior. He was honest..."

"Halo reached across the seat and cupped her bare knee in his huge hand. He rubbed it soothingly. Giving her comfort. It seemed so out of character for him. And yet she had always suspected there was a softer side to him hidden somewhere deep beneath all the bluster and crudeness. She wouldn’t have given herself to him if she hadn’t thought that he was completely irredeemable."

When I first met Felice, I thought she was weak. Granted she was trapped naked in a room against her will. But then I got to know her. She's got a strength to her that is amazing. She's been through some difficult times in her past and has come out stronger, more confident and self-aware than before. I like that she stood up to Halo, didn't let his bullshit bother her and challenged him. Gotta admit though, the was she was psychoanalyzing him and picking at him did come across a bit shrewish. But mostly, I admired her resilience and strength in the face of difficult odds. She could have easily caved under the stress and pressure of her situation but she didn't.

"You can be very practical.” “I’m a realist. I’m facing the truth. I’d rather face the truth than candy-coat it so I’ll feel better for a moment."

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this story given the premise. I think I enjoyed this one much more than the first book in the series and I'm liking seeing the story arc develop in the war between the vampires and the sycophants. A core theme within the story is drug abuse and living a clean life. It's a big deal for clean, law abiding vampires that they have clean food sources. The whole concept behind a clean food source and how it affects the vampires is a very interesting aspect of this series. I look forward to the next book in the series and seeing what happens next.

One final note, even though this is the second book in the series, you can easily jump in and read it without having read the first book. Ms Frank provides some of the world building and back story here and skillfully weaves it into the main storyline. For the first time reader, you get a glimpse of the world these energy vampires live in and for the person who's already read the first book, it's a good refresher.

There are so many problems with this story. Felice has just got out of a abusive relationship, and it is later revealed that she was basically hiding from the man since he turned into a stalker. So her level of fear and paranoia after waking up naked in a prison was way to low. Then she is moved into the same room as the man, and drugged, all while being watched but somehow has no control over her libido? To the point where she has unprotected sex? Seriously? Halo is a douche. He’s good at his job, but aside from being attractive there is nothing about him that is appealing. He’s a womanizing alcoholic, who does nothing to woo Felice. There is nothing about these two people nor the events they experienced together that made me believe they would have a HEA. Also there is nothing Felice has to offer that would keep her from getting her memories erased. Honestly the book should’ve ended with them going their separate ways.

I found the world built interesting in the first book, but in this one not so much. I found the idea of E-Vamps cool and the idea of sycophants interesting, but the logistics doesn’t make sense. Either it’s easy to turn or it’s not. In the first book Rafe went on about how they could only feed from clean sources, meaning people who eat organic and don’t drink or do drugs. That basically negates most of the world. Especially if drugs include over the counter stuff or prescription meds. Now here comes Halo someone who drinks regularly. So he should be a sycophant himself. Also I don’t get the point of feeding from people. Sure 300 years ago where else could they readily consume energy. And maybe at the start of the industrial revolution until the mid 20th century the contaminants in the material used to produce mass energy would’ve been too much. But solar power has been around for a while, and now there are so many clean energy options. It just seems like people who feed on energy would find it much easier to stick their fingers in a socket instead of biting the back of the necks of extremely health conscious folks. I think I’m done with this series.

This is the 2nd book in the series, but I didn't feel like Thirst had to be read before this one. However, there is more backstory on the vampires themselves in the first book. The majority of this book took place in a small space. It was interesting and intriguing. The chemistry between Halo and Felice was intense. He was a cocky bastard and he didn't care if she called him out on it. Under normal circumstances, Felice would never have given Halo a chance after he opened his mouth. But with things being as they were, they couldn't hide their attraction. Even though things seem dire, their chemistry is a potent thing. So the timing may have been off, but it worked for them! I was drawn into their turmoil and their desire. There was action, a LOT of action and a little blood and guts, but I was on the edge of my seat and didn't want to put this book down.
I enjoyed how pieces of the story developed bit-by-bit the further we got into it. The reasons why weren't known upfront and we had to work at getting that story. This book held my attention and I didn't want to do anything that would take me away from it! I like Felice's tenacity toward Halo and how she didn't let him get away with anything. She was the first person who ever called him out on his actions or feelings. She also saw more than others had in the past. She wanted to break down his walls and get to know the man she saw glimpses of as they were held captive. She was a game changer for him and she definitely hadn't been looking for anyone. I liked the fact that the vampires take energy, not blood. I don't necessarily go looking for vampire stories but this is a unique spin on it and I really liked this book and recommend it! Happy reading!

I really did enjoy the second book in the Energy Vampires series. It immediately started off right in the middle of the action and it kept my attention for the entire book. This series definitely has a completely different feel than any other series that I've read from Jacquelyn Frank, but it's growing on me now.

Halo's main goal in life is to hunt down those of his kind that have crossed the line and become sycophants or non-law abiding vampires. When he is taken captive, along with a human woman named Felice, he is forced to re-evaluate how he has been playing fast and loose with the rules himself. After spending time with Felice, it opens him up to emotions he didn't believe he'd ever have.

Felice was just trying to hide from a dangerous ex-boyfriend in an upstate NY town when she was taken captive and introduced to a world she never knew existed. She is strong enough to adapt quickly and fight for a relationship with Halo, while still showing that she is not above asking for help.

The reader is also introduced to even more of the nuances of the vampire world and how far the corruption within the ranks might be. I am hoping that this part of the story continues to be a bigger part of each book as the series progresses.

All in all, I read this book much faster than the first in the series, so I'm very much looking forward to the next book to see where the story goes.

Hunger: The Energy Vampires Book Two Kindle Edition
by Jacquelyn Frank
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was thrilled, after reading the first novel, Thirst, in this series , that Halo was the next hero. What can I `say, I love the damaged hero. And Halo is definitely damaged. A hunter seeking out sycophants, evil energy vampires, he walks the line between good and evil as almost a punishment for all that he has and will do. Women to him, are disposable, as he always chooses ones he can walk away from, women who only want a moment of pleasure and forgetfulness. As the best hunter, he is sent after one of their leaders who has turned sycophant. And the great hunter's caught himself, locked in a room to starve or attack an innocent woman trapped with him and become sycophant himself.
This is more than a simple love story. Hunger is a vampiric version of the Most Dangerous Game and thrilling for it. That isn't to `say that there isn't more than enough steam to power a locomotive. There is. But the cat and cat chase is thrilling.
Ms. Frank also does a wonderful job with narrators' voices. She gives us a view into the characters through one liners.
I would have to say that Hunger was better than the first novel in the series Thirst

Ok, I have to start out by saying, that I enjoyed this book quite a bit more than the first one in the series. I was SO excited to read Halo's story, as he was a character that really intrigued me in the first book and made me hunger to know more about him.

The way this story started out with Halo and Felice both wondering, along with myself, how they got where they are and precisely why they are there. I think that two naked strangers locked in a sealed room together makes for a curious and compelling book beginning, and I immediately found myself on board for the story to come.

I thought the plot was well-crafted and moved along at a good pace. The characters were certainly interesting, and I liked the elements of humanity prevalent in Halo and others of his kind. They were subject to the same trappings of greed, lust and thirst for power, as well as emotions of tenderness, protectiveness and the need for good to conquer evil that their human counterparts experience. I liked Halo's balance of fierce and gentle. This is always appealing for me in a male lead.

Overall, I was quite pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this second installment in the series, after the mixed feelings I had about the first . I am, now, eagerly looking forward to the next book.

*I received a complimentary ARC of this story from NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

This series is filled with unexpected twists and turns and this particular book really set the tone from page 1. Who knew a book that started like a “Saw” installment could end up being so steamy and romantic?

We join Halo in an unfamiliar place, with no recollection of how he ended up there. He’s been stripped and confined to a nondescript room with nothing but video footage of another captive to entertain him. The other captive, Felice, is a human and unexposed to his e-vamp world but all of that goes out the window when they must rely on each other to escape. It seems relatively straightforward in concept – the unattached hunter must work with the caring human, but it is so much deeper than that.

On top of the regular escape and try not to have feelings for one another story, there’s also the big bad in this situation who is actively working against the “good vamps.” With an operation designed at forcing them to feed off tainted energy, it seems like the plot could actually work in the long run. This battle between the good and bad vamps is clearly ramping up and will require the unique combinations thrown together in these books for the good ones to emerge victorious. I’m very interested to see where we head next and how the stoic guardian we met here will find his match.
