This book was nothing like I thought it was going to be. it was much deeper and darker than I expected.
I was hooked from the first fifty pages.

Review - March 2016. This was a re-read of the book for a publisher blog tour.
I didn't review books in 2008 but I see from my Goodreads rating that I gave this one 5*. My tastes have changed a little over the years and I was interested to see whether this would still be a 5* read for me. The settings of Venice and Yorkshire worked perfectly for me - I adore Venice and could recognise some of the sights mentioned in the book, I've done the touristy things and sat outside at Caffè Florian in Piazza San Marco, with coffee and cake listening to the band. At the back of the book are some interesting details of the role that Venice played in the writing together with a map and some photos. It must be an age thing but although I had read this book before, I couldn't remember a thing about it and it was though I were reading it for the first time.
At just shy of 500 pages, the book will keep you occupied for a while. We first meet the older Lydia in Venice, widowed and with a young stepdaughter Chiara. Following an accident on the Rialto Bridge, she injures her ankle and it is during her confinement at home that the story of her childhood, and indeed, the reason for her injury, unfolds. We then travel to Yorkshire where the majority of the story takes place.
Lydia Turner, and her younger sister Valerie, had a very difficult childhood. They were sent to live with their very strict and unforgiving grandparents, who were both members of The Church of the Brothers and Sisters in Christ. For supposedly Christian people, their attitude and and behaviour was anything but and Lydia's only salvation came in the form of Noah Solomon. Both Noah and Lydia were 9 years old when they became friends at school and they became inseparable. I don't want to give away anything of the story - there is much sadness and tragedy in their young lives but it is also a coming of age story with a darkness about it. It is obvious from the very beginning of the story that Noah has a part to play in Lydia's accident and as the story unfolds I was desperate to know what had happened to separate two young people once so much in love.
If you want a story that you can immerse yourself in then Tell it to the Skies is certainly worth picking up. The characters are expertly drawn and felt so real I could almost have been there with them and I wanted to weep for Lydia at every cruelty and injustice that she suffered. I'm glad to say this was still a 5* read for me.

Perskaičiusi Erica James "Vasara prie ežero" romaną, nekantravau perskaityti ir kitą šios autorės knygą, tad ilgai nelaukiau ir į rankas paėmiau "Papasakok tai dangui".

Romanas prasideda Lidijos gyvenimu Venecijoje ir netikėtu susitikimu, kuris nukreipia ją į praeitį prieš 28 metus ir vaikystę. Visa tai sudrumsčia Lidijos ramybę ir saugų prieglobstį Italijoje ir sužadina prisiminimus apie seniai pamirštą siaubingą įvykį, kurį išsiaiškinus viskas gali apvirsti aukštyn kojomis. Lidija ilgai slėpė paslaptis nuo naujosios šeimos, tačiau netrukus pradeda pasakoti didžiąją savo gyvenimo istoriją apie vaikystės traumas, meilę ir kaltę.

Knygoje yra dvi ryškios dalys - praeitis ir dabartis. Mano manymu, šio romano svarbiausia dalis ir buvo būtent praeitis. Ji užėmė didžiąją dalį knygos ir joje buvo smulkiai pasakoja apie Lidijos vaikystę, kai netekus tėvų ji su seserimi buvo išsiųstos gyventi pas senelius, kurių jos net nepažinojo ir, kurie buvo nusiteikę priešiškai. Būtent toks senelių nusiteikimas ir mergaitėms tekęs priešiškas ir žiaurus likimas privertė greičiau subręsti. Lidija išmoko saugoti paslaptis ir niekuo nepasitikėti, gyventi su sielvarto ir kaltės šešėliais.

Žinote, jei knyga sukelia bent kokią emociją - jau laikau ją nebloga, tačiau kai knyga sugeria tave į savo vidų - laikau, kad knyga tikrai gera. Jeigu apie šios autorės knygą "Vasara prie ežero" rašiau, kad ji sentimentali ir nostalgiška, tai ši knyga yra visiškai kitokia. Taip, nostalgiją tam tikrą pajaučiau, bet pagrindiniai jausmai sukilę mano viduje buvo kartėlis, liūdesys ir pyktis. Nors tai ir buvo toks romanas, kokius mes puikiai visi pažįstame, tačiau man visada būna kiek sunkiau skaityti tokias knygas, kuriose kalbama apie smurtą šeimoje, emocines problemas, prievartą prieš vaikus. O šis romanas aprėpė labai daug tokių temų, tad jis nebuvo visiškai banalus, saldus ir gėlėtas.
Praeitis neleidžia apsimesti, kad jos nebuvo, ji niekada nepalieka, kad ir kaip stengtumėmės izoliuoti save nuo jos, todėl pagrindinės veikėjos Lidijos siela buvo apipinta kalte ir paslaptimis. .
Nenoriu labai išsiplėsti ar papasakoti daugiau, nei reikia, tačiau noriu pasidžiaugti atradusi šią autorę. Jos knygos lietuviškai yra tik dvi, tačiau labai tikiuosi, kad ateityje jų bus daugiau. Dar džiugiau yra tai, kad šios knygos nors ir turi panašumų, tačiau jie labai minimalūs ir romanai labai skirtingi, pasakojantys visai skirtingas istorijas ir paliečiantys netapačias problemas. Tad tikrai rekomenduoju pabandyti šį romaną, nes tikrai yra daug banalesnių kūrinių!

Ėmiau šį romaną su mintimi, kad pavyks pakeliauti po Italiją prisiminimais ir mintimis, ir mane apgavo. Tik knygos pradžia – įžanga ir labai nedideli intarpai buvo apie ją. O be klūpčiojimo ant Rialto tilto daugiau ko apie mano mylimą Veneciją taip ir neradau. Bet ar tai buvo blogai? Toli gražu! Didžiausia ir įdomiausia romano dalis vyko Anglijoje. Nors, atskleisiu, ir ten itališkų prieskonių kartas nuo karto autorė vis įberdavo.
Lidija jau suaugusi, ir Venecijos gatvėse sutikta dukros nauja simpatija sujaukia visus jos prisiminimus ir sveiką protą. Moteris mintimis grįžta į vaikystę Anglijoje, kur augo pas senelius kraupiomis sąlygomis po mamos mirties. Vienintelis tuomet sveiką protą palaikęs dalykas – geras draugas Nojus, kuris, su laiku ir su paauglystės hormonais rodėsi vis labiau nei draugas…
Negailėsiu pagyrų iš karto – nuostabi knyga, labai gražus romanas. Apie praeitį, apie susitaikymą, paleidimą, norą gyventi toliau, nors tą gyvenimą nuolat kažkas bando tarsi kilimėlį ištraukti iš po kojų. O baisiausia, kai žmonės, turintys tave mylėti, tavimi rūpintis, nes esi tik vaikas, elgiasi piešingai – engia, baudžia, skriaudžia ir namai nebetenka žodžio „namai“ prasmės, o tampa tik pastatu, į kurį nieku gyvu nesinori grįžti.
Dar labiau nei tos fizinės bausmės ar engimas mane kraupino manipuliacijos ir žaidimai su vaikais. Jų skirstymas ir bandymas vienam duoti viską, o iš kito atimti ir tai, ko nė neturi. Kartais tiesiog norėjosi pasakyti – na kam jūs ėmėte tuos vaikus, dėl ko, dėl akių, dėl galėjimo pasipuikuoti prieš dievą ar kaimynus? Juk jei nenorite auginti, neauginkite. Atiduokite juos ten, kur galbūt jie negaus meilės, bet taip pat nebus ir engiami. Skaudėjo širdį dėl viso šito, tiesiog klaikiai neteisinga viskas rodėsi, ir norėjosi kažkaip Lidijai padėti.
Ir niekaip negaliu nepasidžiaugti romantiškąja knygos dalimi. Kaip man viskas patiko, kokie tikri rodėsi veikėjai. Su savo baimėmis, su bandymais, ėjimais per bruzgynus, klampynes ir labirintus. Tokie velniškai tikri ir artimi. Įprastai nesu didelė laimingų pabaigų gerbėja, vis tik, čia labai norėjosi, kad po visų kančių veikėjai galiausiai galėtų pasimėgauti gyvenimu, sveikais santykiais ir laime. Tikrai gražus romanas, sakyčiau, toks net truputį suteikiantis viltį, kad dažnai po visų nesąmonių, kurias iškenčiame, vis tiek ateina tos šviesios dienos ir laimė. Tik sutikit, kartais tos kančios galėtų tęstis gerokai trumpiau.

This book had its faults, but I genuinely enjoyed it from start to finish, which is more than I can say for a lot of others, and which made me willing to forgive it for the odd plot hole or improbably convenient outcome.
From the cover and blurb (and the first chapter) I was expecting light, fluffy entertainment. The second section about Lydia's troubled childhood came as a surprise - in fact I felt like that whole section had been lifted from a very different and much darker book, and then wrapped up with a happy ending from the book I'd been expecting.
The 'past' section was fascinating, in a rather 'misery-lit' way, and made me feel like I really knew Lydia. I was looking forward to meeting her present-day self again to see how her background had affected her and made her who she was. But present-day Lydia (on whom we were only given about three chapters) seemed like a completely different person. That a woman with a harrowing background of repression, abuse, sexual harrassment, perceived abandonment from childhood sweetheart et al, could be so utterly well-adjusted, calm and happy with her life, felt like a bit of a stretch. I suppose she did have Noah's friendship and love for most of her life to counteract the effects of all that misery, and we did skip a huge chunk of her life in which a lot of things could've happened. Still. I got the impression that something huge was being foreshadowed that whole time, and felt a bit nonplussed when nothing actually eventuated.
However, as I said, for all that it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I'd recommend it. I loved the character of Noah and his relationship with Lydia, especially when they were children.

Gera knyga. Romanas prasideda Lidijos gyvenimu Venecijoje ir netikėtu susidūrimu, kuris nukelia mus į praeitį, į Lidijos vaikystę.
Kaip stipriai mane įtraukė praeities linija. Kokia skaudi ir pilna neteisybės. Kiek likimo išbandymų duota. Koks nenormalus, priešiškas ir pyktį keliantis senelių elgesys. Ir savotiškai viską atperkančios svajonės ir pirmoji meilė.
Na, o su dabarties linija tokio stipraus ryšio neapturėjau. Banalu, suskubėta. Džiaugiausi tik dėl to, kad pagrindinė veikėja vis tik atlaikė likimo suduotus smūgius ir tapo laiminga.
Raizgiai supinta šeimos drama, kuri pamažu, žingsnis po žingsio mums atskleidžia slepiamą istoriją. O ji skaudi, pilna kaltės, sielvarto, paslapčių, nepasitikėjimo, žiaurumo, bet, tuo pačiu, suteikianti vilties, kad paleidus viską, kas skaudina, ateina susitaikymas ir gyvenimas tampa šviesesnis.

I’m going to make a big statement here...possibly one of the best books I’ve read. I know. No going back from this one. My mam said she has always remembered it and I can see why.
I just love the way Erica James writes. Beautiful writing, beautiful characters, beautiful story. It’s so real.
A word of warning: absolute rollercoaster of emotions and some heartbreaking parts😭😭

Meh...... I had to finish it to find out what happened in the end but way to over written and contrived for my liking.
Oh maybe I'm being too harsh. I feel its churlish to give it two stars but three feels too generous. So going to put three but actually its a 2.5
I have fundamental issues with this book Lydia the protagonist has had significant adverse events in her early life as has Noah her friend/lover. Both with little real help about how to unpack the trauma suffered or how to develop values and boundaries manage to become financially affluent and able to be concise critical thinkers. Fantasy pure fantasy nobody is that resilient and in all likelihood the most accurate characters are the flawed Uncle Brad and baby sister Valerie.

Wow wow wow! What am incredible story. This is a book about death, family, pain, young love, religion, unexpected friendships, consequences and so much more, all weaved together into a very real, living and tragic story. I felt like such a part of the story, I even stopped in a coffee shop on the way to work to read a few more chapters this morning and couldn't wait to get home to finish the story. Yes, there are parts that are very convenient and we don't get enough of adult Lydia but it was written really well and left me guessing throughout. A real roller-coaster of emotions have left me in tears and I think I'll be contemplating this one for a bit longer yet...

Priešingai, tokias knygas aš mėgstu paskaityti, kai norisi kažko nei per daug sunkaus, nei per daug lengvo. Tokie kūriniai man kaip mėtų arbata, kuri nei per daug karti, nei per daug saldi. Tačiau gomurį gerai nutvilko savo vėsuma. Todėl tokias knygas renkuosi tam, kad pasimėgaučiau istorija, suteikčiau savo mintims lengvą poilsį per daug jų neapkraunant, tačiau tuo pačiu pasineriant į painius ir intriguojančius pasakojimus. Viena iš tokių autorių, kuri įsuka į tokius istorijų verpetus, yra Erica James. Nors su šia autore draugystę pradėjau dar vasarą, perskaičiusi jos kūrinį "Vasara prie ežero", ilgai nelaukus turėjau puikią galimybę perskaityti jos sekantį kūrinį "Papasakok tai dangui". Abiejų knygų ryškūs viršeliai byloja apie lengvus atostogų romanus? Anaiptol, tikrai ne. Tai daugiau šeimos dramos, kuriose glūdi vienokios ar kitokios veikėjų paslaptys. Jei ir yra meilės, tai ji subtiliai pateikiama be to vadinamo glamūro. Taigi, grįžtant prie "Papasakok tai dangui", veiksmas mus nukelia tiek į Angliją, tiek į Veneciją. Pagrindinė knygos veikėja Lidija vaikystėje su seserimi buvo išsiųstos gyventi pas senelius, kurių išvis nepažinojo. Patekusios žiauraus likimo glėbin, mergaitės buvo priverstos anksčiau subręsti. Užaugusi Lidija išmoko saugoti paslaptis ir niekuo nepasitikėti, gyventi su sielvartu ir kalte. Tačiau praėjus beveik trisdešimt metų, Lidija palikusi naujai susikurtą gyvenimą, sugrįžta atgal į Angliją. Kas priverčia moterį taip pasielgti? Ką ji slepia tokio, kad negali pasakyti net artimiausiems žmonėms? Atsakymus rasite skaitydami šią knygą. Žinot skaitydama šią istoriją, prisiminiau V. C. Endrius knygas dėl tam tikrų epizodų, susijusių su vaikais ir jų auklėjimu. Šiuo atveju nusikeliant į Lidijos ir jos sesers vaikystę. Neatskleidžiant per daug knygos siužeto, šį pasakojimą esu linkusi vadinti vis tik šeimos drama, nes čia viskas taip supinta, perpinta ir pačioje pabaigoje viskas išpinta lyg kokia kasa. Skaitant laikas tikrai neprailgo: autorė leido mėgautis Venecijos ir Anglijos vaizdais ir tuo pačiu narplioti Lidijos gyvenimo giją. Nors tokių romanų, panašių savo siužetu esu perskaičiusi gan nemažai, bet man kaskart jų tikrai reikia kaip tos rytinės mėtų arbatos. Norisi narplioti veikėjų gyvenimus iš pagrindų, o gavus atsakymus-atsikvėpti, kad viskas baigėsi laimingai. Tad kas tikitės, jog čia bus detektyvo, nuvilsiu, čia jo labai minimaliai. Čia verda kitokie gyvenimai, čia žmonės turi paslapčių. Tad jei norisi kažko lengvai dramatiško šiais vėsiais rudens vakarais, šis kūrinys kaip tik jums. Ir pabaigai pamąstymui:"Praeitis visada su mumis, kad negalime apsimesti, jog jos nebuvo. Ji niekada mūsų nepalieka, kad ir kaip stengtumėmės save izoliuoti nuo jos".

Very readable, but overall somewhat disappointing after having been so impressed by the first of James' books I read. The plot involves a middle-aged woman living in Venice suddenly being startled by what she thinks is a vision of a long-lost love. Matters ensue, and the main substance of the novel is flash-back to the woman's childhood and youth and the relationship between her and this lost love. The story is quite compelling, but I have to confess that I found some of the details melodramatic: wicked grandfather, wicked great-uncle, mad grandmother, religious fanatics... really? I also have to confess that I found the pivotal secret and both main characters' response to it rather unbelievable, apparently more motivated by the exigencies of getting them somewhere in the plot rather than real feelings. And that's a shame, because I think James is capable of better - I know she is. And, you know, though the ending will satisfy the romantics among us, I found that a bit too easy as well.

This novel was a very pleasant surprise of a read. When I bought this novel I thought it was going to be an easy, every day romance story, but BOY was I wrong.
This book was about the life of Lydia. In the beginning, we can see a confused and lost 40-year-old woman living in Italy, whose reaction to certain situations, f.e. seeing her step-daughter's new boyfriend and having a panic attack, at first seem ridiculous and laughable, but somehow authentic, therefore it keeps the reader interested. It jumps to telling Lydia's past and her life story. Everything in her childhood, from her mother's suicide to her abusive grandfather, is meant to explain why she has become how she is and even though not everyone would know how death or abuse influences a growing child, this author managed to do it perfectly and naturally.
Would 100% recommend.

I have to say that I was pretty skeptical about this book when I picked it up. I thought that it was going to be pretty corny chick lit. I have to say that I was presently surprised. The plot was good it was full of emotion and it was a page turner. I was gripped to find out what happened to Lydia and Noah. However once the main plot of Lydia and Noah growing up it began to slow, due to the amount of explanation that was needed to wind up the story. This was further complicated by adding in the fact that Noah develops a brain tumor. I thought this was a step to far and the novel could have done without it. All in all this was a good read unfortunately the ending didn't really do it justice. I was also pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as corny as I thought.

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down and felt like I really knew the characters. Like other readers I was taken by surprise by the way it was written I was expecting a usual clic lit but enjoyed the fact this wasn't the usual predictable clic lit, although it was sad and in some parts harrowing I just had to keep reading to find out what happened. I grew up in the '70's and therefore could identify with the era. Another reviewer mentioned that the police would have been alerted about Lydia's injuries however back in those days things were very different.

The book started a bit slow. I thought this was going to be a light hearted Rom-Com and it definitely wasn’t that. The book covered quite a few deep and potentially triggering themes. Initially I thought what on earth am I reading and it was sitting at a solid 3 star for the first half but then it picked up. There were so many plot twists over and over again. I didn’t see them coming. I enjoyed the later part of the book more than the earlier part particularly when I got used to the deep themes.

This is one of those books that I just couldn't put down!! The 'dark' parts surprised me, as it's not something I'd come to expect from an Erica James book, but was handled well I felt. It did have lots of twists and turns, and I have to say I was satisfied with the ending, sometimes with plots like that you can be left hanging, wondering what happened to some of the characters.

I liked the premise of this book that making long term decisions on the basis of wrong information can affect many lives for decades. The long section of Lydia's terrible childhood was too long and sometimes tedious.

I'm scared to review this based on Hannah and Philes 5 star rating... but I really didn't like this book 😭
It was predictable, boring, over dramatic and the main character irritated me, I didn't even think I would finish it but felt like I had to. I really really wanted to like it because it came with such high reviews. I listened to it as an audiobook and didn't love the narrator so maybe that's it, and I'll give it 3 rather than 2 just in case.

This woman knows how to write relationships whether it be friends or family, good or bad she managed to grasp human relationships. I actually will miss these characters, if that's not a sign of good writing then "you will never be satisfied" iykyk
