From the Millennium Falcon to Clone Battle Tanks, young fans can peel back high-tech layers to reveal the cockpits, engines, hyperdrives, and construction secrets of the vehicles featured in the entire six-film saga. Full color.
Beginning with Episode I and running through Return of the Jedi, various ships, transports and other vehicles were analyzed in stunning, informative, amazing detail. You can see things down to the circuits in the ships. The artists, first and foremost have to be commended on their level of technique. The authors must not be left out either though, their level of description was incredible. It discussed not only technical aspects of the ships and vehicles, but also history and background on those who used them, and what they were used for.
Some of my favorite diagrams included:
TIE Advanced - Vader's TIE fighter which documented the mechanics of the Sith Lord's personal ship.
Jabba's Sail Barge - You could see everything on the decks of not only the main sail barge, but also the smaller barges that transported Luke, Han and Chewie to the Sarlacc pit.
Jedi Interceptor - The starfighter Anakin and Obi-Wan flew at the Battle of Coruscant.
Many of the ships were in fold out sections that showed how those ships related to larger ones. For example, a Droid fighter, and within the fold out was a Droid Control ship. There was also a section at the end discussing illustrator Richard Chasemore and his work. A remarkable artist.
After about 5-10 pages the first word that came to me was NERD!!! That is basically what you are if you read this book... Man I am a semi nerd, OK more of a nerd when it comes to SW, but man not that much of a nerd... This was pretty cool to see the vehicles, but this want far and beyond with the detail and description of what everything is. Man I don't know if this is everything, but there was some serious coordination with the SW people on this...
If you are a NERD, then maybe this is for you. If you are not, well if you want to look at the pretty pictures and read a little bit of it then sure read it.
Library only, don't recommend buying it because...well...there is no reason to...
In my quest to read through many of my old books, I have found a true novelty item. SW:CCS is most definitely a quick read, probably an hour in total. It is mostly pictures with some supporting text boxes. My copy was released before Phantom Menace and only covers the original trilogy. I'm sure a newer and much larger version is out there now, but even the original trilogy cross-sections are interesting. I particularly liked the capital ships which almost have a "Where's Waldo?" feeling to them since you are looking for any kind of interesting details or famous scenes from the movies. While I really enjoyed flipping through this coffee table book, it is probably one of the least necessary purchases I've made. If you get a chance to flip through it at a bookstore or something like that, you should be able to get the full experience without needing to buy it.
This may not be book with all of the vehicle cross-sections from all of the Star Wars films. It is, however the last comprehensive collection made in the large format coffee table books of this type. A bigger book means the larger images, with all the details clear to see. What you get in this book are all the major vehicles from the first six movies, along with a lot of technical details for each. While they do make a complete cross-section book that includes vehicles from the new trilogy, it's a good 2" shorter than this volume.
This is a great guide if you like Star Wars! It focuses heavily on the first three movies more than the last three (which is good, because I like the former) and it sometimes shows how things work, which lead to great discussions about fiction vs nonfiction. I do not like it as well as the Complete Locations book, though.
Asher (6yo) read all of this book (very carefully) mostly by himself. He said he really liked it because it helped him know how all the vehicles worked. I read a few of the pages with him and they chocked full of information. Very, very detailed information.
Excellent, astounding, detailed to the extreme illustrations.
Very cool book, showing the insides and mechanics of all the star wars vehicles (from the movies) and how they work. Theres not a ton of reading in it compared to other star wars books but its really cool, definatly something to look at when your bored!
I love cross-section books like this one! It covers episodes I-VI, and features all my favourite ships from that saga. I love the amount of detail and thought that goes into everything.
