This was meant to be sort of a companion read to The Three. Planes on the covers and paranormal ingredients. It wasn't in the same league, but it proved surprisingly entertaining, solidly paced, technically meticulous with some genuinely exciting and some genuinely eerie atmospheric moments. Flying is, let's face it, a horrifying way to travel, no matter how safe the statistics and science insists it is. Flying with misbehaving machinery and evil presences on board...that's really something. The title pays homage to a certain other famous one, after all how can you think of a dark figure on a wig of a plane without it. Unlike its famous predecessor, it sort of lacks the punchline. It has a nice set up, but the novel ultimately doesn't quite hit the target and the ending is something of a cheery letdown, unsatisfactory in a way that it never takes advantage of exploring its wild premise. It is quite thrilling and paranormal, so it lives up to its name, although I'm not at all a fan of novels with such unnecessarily descriptive titles. Not great, but a very decent read and good fun. Thanks Netgalley.
Please don't read this book before you are scheduled to take a plane trip if you are in any way susceptible to noticing strange, eerie things......please. You will regret it if you do because every creak and unidentified motion of the airplane will have you wondering what's out 'there'. Or maybe worse, what's in the plane with you.
This is one of those paradox novels which I find sometimes. I didn't particularly like the writing style of the author, but the story simply would not let me stop reading once I had started. The first half of the novel is all about meeting the crew members and passengers who will be taking the long flight from Los Angeles to Sydney. There is even a chapter about the configuration of the airplane. Two of the flight crew members, Sharlene and Aaron have become romantically involved so you have that plot thread running through the novel as well as the problems happening in the lives of crew members and passengers. Some characters are written to be decidedly odd in the way they act so even that builds the tension for what is going to happen when Oceans Airways Flight 582 is winging its way across the Pacific ocean. The second portion of the novel concerns what some of the people experienced while the flight was under way.
I like reading novels with strange happenings in them, but I'm not exactly sure even now what happened aboard that flight. This is spooky, scary fiction so if you like to feel the hair lift off the back of your neck when you are reading a novel, give this one a try. I, however, will NOT be taking any trips anytime soon where I have to fly.
I received this novel as an e-ARC through NetGalley.
. Ini buku ketiga dari karya Jack Lance yg kubaca setelah "The Day You Died" dan "Dark Memory".
To much suspense for me.
Only after I requested this book from Netgalley did I realise that it is a translation from a Dutch book that was published some years ago. I'd never read it, but was curious to find out whether it was well translated.
Flying has never been one of my favourite routes of travel, no matter how many times people tell me flying is the safest way of transportation. Reading a book like Zone will not contribute to that feeling. During a long flight, strange things happen and clearly, they are not alone on this plane.
It was an amusing read. I didn't expect too much from it, and that was exactly what I got. I'm sort of thinking of maybe reading the Dutch original, just to see how this relates to the original, because I know sometimes a lot get changed to make it more appealing to the American public.
Thank to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I expected more out of this book based on previous reviews I had seen. I feel a bit let down! The writing style was very good. But the plot just went flat... period! I was SO looking forward to a great supernatural thrill ride, which never transpired. The protagonist's we're well back storied, but other characters who we're meant to help the story line boost, fell flat. There simply wasn't enough built around those characters.
The writing itself DID keep me engaged in reading the book. But I just kept waiting and waiting for the story to pick up. For there to be some grand supernatural happenings, but they we're all very minute. I get what the author, Jack Lance was doing in making "They" a thing that's there in our wake without knowing it, but for those who have "been to the other side" being "touched" by KNOWING, even as some did not know they we're until parts in the story. It just fell flat in the "thriller" category as what you expect that definition being what it is.
I was left wanting MORE! More action, more "they", more "touched", more just overall happening within the doomed plane. However, saying that, I did still enjoy the read. Maybe it was me waiting and expecting more to occur, to ramp things up a bit. The book was translated from Dutch to English, which can lose a lot in translation in some, but that was not a problem here. Having lived in Germany for several tears, and going to Amsterdam, Dutch is quite a lot closer in English then many other languages, so I feel that could be why it translated without a hiccup.
In the end, literally, it just lost the final attempt at a "great" ending. Falling flat. Even though it sounds like I'm complaining, I enjoyed the book as I stated above. It may just be MY expectations as I read supernaturals, horrors, hunting's, thrillers. I probably am just used to high octane, gore, visceral emotion's, I don't know? Maybe that's why I still enjoyed it and see it as just tapered down? I think it IS a good read for someone who enjoys a well written story, with good back story's, even though some fell short, they still gave enough to include that character. But in the same breath, at the end, those same characters AKA passengers that we're given back story's to join them in, left THEIR outcome out! A pleasant, thoughtful, entertaining read overall.
NOTE: I received a hard copy of the book for an honest review. Thank you!
Severn House and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
After a hurried morning where she and new boyfriend, Aaron, are almost late for work, assistant purser for Ocean Airways Sharlene Thier has a foreboding feeling. Relieved that Aaron is the purser on the flight, her mind is further set at ease when she discovers her friend Captain Nichols is at the helm for the long flight to Sydney. When the plane encounters clear-air turbulence, or the phenomenon that occurs with a violent collision between warm and cold air, the pilots soon realize that all communications with the outside world are down. With readings on the instrument panel failing one after the other, can the pilot safely bring all passengers and crew to safety?
With a paranormal element that twists this suspense to something otherworldly, Zone is more than just a book about a plane full of passengers. As it is a short book, my problem with it is that the author spends too much time on describing the individual passengers and not enough on the plot. Had the focus remained on Sharlene and her story, I feel that it would have had a greater impact. As the author hammers home the idea that some of the passengers are attuned to something of a paranormal nature, the multiple point of view approach takes the reader out of the action. Between the suspense and the likeable character of Sharlene, I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy paranormal suspense.
Membaca kisah horror misteri begini masih sempatnya menyanyi lagu sedih.
Sharlene and Aaron have a romantic relationship and are stewards on the same Boeing 747 travelling from LAX to Sydney Australia. There are some strange passengers on the plane, including a little girl who hasn't spoken in two years who can see when a person is about to die. Well into a fourteen-hour flight everything on the plane eventually shuts down. They fly above cloud cover in complete darkness over the Pacific Ocean, not knowing where exactly they are. Sharlene and the little girl can see strange dark figures that obviously nobody else sees.
Ini pesan yang ingin disampaikan penulis bagus banget loh, sayangnya penjelasannya cuma sekedar numpang lewat aja. thrillernya dapet tapi terornya kurang. di tengah buku udah bisa lihat sih benang merah semuanya tapi penjelasan di endingnya cuma ya kaya kubilang di atas, sedikit.
Endingnya agak ngegantung.

... halaman demi halaman terus membuat penasaran. Ohiya!
I liked the eerie feeling of this book, but I honestly wanted some kind of explanation or more in depth about what happened. Enjoyable read nonetheless
I feel compelled to write a review of this book to balance out all the 3 and 4 star written reviews. I was honestly shocked to come on here and see that this book has an average rating of 3.5 stars. Even as I was reading, I was thinking to myself that I was going to have more fun reading the reviews here than I was reading the actual book...
I don't criticise books lightly and I will pretty much read anything and find something to enjoy. However, I honestly think that this book is the worst story I have ever read.
Firstly, a few pages in, I was reminded of the writing style found in (stick with me here) a British podcast called 'My Dad Wrote a Porno', where three friends read through a book written and self-published by one of their dads. It's hilarious - but as unsexy and terribly written as you might be thinking. The comparison is not a compliment.
Secondly, the characters are flat, predictable stereotypes. The women are either young bombshells or bigger, older, unattractive ladies. When introducing new characters, especially the women, Lance focuses on their appearances rather than their personalities. Some are lucky enough to get a little backstory, others get the likes of, "The stewardess was a tad overweight, but not unattractive and always jolly. That brief description summed up Mara".
The writing is, for the most part, lazy. Perhaps it's the translation, but it comes across as juvenile; "She blinked, and saw an essence standing there, as forbidding and threatening as the darkest of nights". Yawn. I've had seven year olds in my class write me better sentences than that. Largely because of his uninspired writing, this 'thriller' is nothing of the sorts. I scare incredibly easily but the writing made me laugh (at it, not with it) rather than anything else.
There are some strange choices in how Lance chose to write about the plane journey. Before take-off, the story is littered with paragraphs full of minute detail about the pilot's responsibilities and the plane's specifications. They're so long that they drag you out of whatever story is struggling to build but they're not interesting enough to make it excusable. Following take-off, these detials mostly disappear and the story plods on.
However, it seems the author couldn't be bothered to do much research for other elements of his book. One of the side chatacters is a girl with autism who is mute. What bothered me the most about this character (even more than the fact that she supposedly 'became autistic' after seeing her parents brutally murdered) was that she is simply used as a plot device. She adds nothing to the story other than an attempt to create a scary scene where she finally talks to say that the entities on board "want us". On top of that, the autistic girl and her adopted mother just happen to be sitting next to a psychologist (of course they are). The psychologist asks the mother about the girl and says she'd like to help (very professional). They proceed to talk about this girl and the traumatic upbringing that caused her to withdraw, as the girl sits next to them, listening to all the gory details! Very professional. Then, the stewardess comes over and they go over the story once again! Basic research into autism and how to help traumatised children would have prevented this ridiculous scene from being so eye-rollingly unrealistic.
There are references (maybe they were supposed to be homages) to other books and films throughout the story. Some were kind of subtle, others were shoved in with a sledgehammer. For example, an air hostess has just freed herself from under a trolley following the plane crash - "She had once seen the movie Saw II with Todd Bower. The scene that had stayed with her involved a herion addict falling into a pit filled with hypodermic needles. Repulsed, Sharlene had wondered how much something like that must hurt. Now she knew". Really?? And I'm not even going to go near comparing one of the characters to Shakira...
As for the ending... It was bad. Hardly anyone died. None of the main characters suffered so much as a scratch. The entities on board kind of just... Disappeared. I think it was implied they were stuck in the plane at the bottom of the sea, but that would be odd since they had enough 'power' to take down the whole plane in the first place...
To conclude; terrible writing, banal dialogue and boring, predictable characters make this a poor attempt at a supernatural thriller. Perhaps Lance should try non-fiction books about planes and/or pilots (or maybe even Shakira), since that's clearly where his interests lay.

A Dutch horror story that will make you think twice before you board your next plane
ZONE was written by a Dutch suspense writer and translated into English and I wasn't sure what to expect. Some English translations just don't make my cut. But this horror/thriller offering was translated expertly and was a suspenseful, frightening read.
Purser Aaron Drake and assistant purser Sharlene Thier both work for Oceans Airways, based out of L.A. And they've recently become a couple in their off hours. They don't fly the same flights often but today they're both flying on Flight 582, flying from L.A. to Sydney, Australia.
Even before boarding and soon after, the author lets us know that Aaron and Sharlene plus other members of the crew and passengers have dark events in their pasts. And the reader soon realizes that something dark and twisted is on board Flight 582.
Great build-up of suspense and characters that are developed to just the right degree make this a super fun story - especially to read with the lights turned down low.
A couple of points - the book reminded me in many ways of the television series "Lost." Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily because I loved that TV series.
A negative, though, was the ending. It was very abrupt and left a lot of loose plotlines dangling. But the book is still well worth reading. especially if you like horror, thrillers, or airplane thrillers.
NOTE: I received this book from Severn House Publishers through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
This is a quick, gripping read, which was easy to get into and fast-paced enough to finish in a day. The subject matter, an ill-fated Boeing 747 which is doomed never to reach its intended destination, isn’t one I thought would appeal to me, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Zone. The main character, Sharlene, is an air-stewardess haunted by her past – the premature death of her mother and abuse at the hands of her alcoholic father. We follow her experience on board the plane, and get to know something of the lives of other passengers, too, all of whom seem to have something to fear.
Some aspects of Zone were a bit unnecessary, I felt, including quite a lot of detail given about some passengers which were only incidental to the story. Also, the attempt at introducing a sort of erotic element when describing the effect that the dark ‘presence’ had on Sharlene was somewhat forced, and jarred with the rest of the writing.
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick and entertaining short novel, but perhaps it’s not holiday reading if you’re planning on travelling by plane!

A picture is worth a thousand words. The book cover says it all. I'm never flying again. (Well, maybe short flights only) This is a spooky, creepy, down right chilling, horror story. If you fly long distance don't choose this book for reading in transit. Better to read it during a thunderstorm, an home, with a guard dog beside you. The main characters are well done with enough background for the reader to understand their fears. There are several passengers who add to the mix. Some are rather strange and others are down right nasty. As the long flight continues the plane encounters "rough" weather. The pilot had problems with navigation. There is something dark and deadly on the plane. The reader can almost feel the tension building with the physical and emotional distress of the passenters. I really liked the way the whole story unfolded. It seemed so realistic and built up to a deadly ending. A very good scare.
Iets kwaadaardigs
Thank you for the opportunity to read ZONE. This is a supernatural story of passengers who are aboard a fated flight. The novel takes the reader on the flight and the passenger's point of view is explored each chapter. Is there something on board with the passengers? Do they all share the experience of near death? What is going on as the flight continues to Sydney, Australia with strange happenings on board? I found this book fast paced and engrossing. The ending was a disappointment to me and I am not sure what I was expecting, but did find that I felt let down. Good reading, Ending??? ok for me.
